Products For Hyperpigmentation & Melasma (What Worked, What Didn't?)

  • I was recently asked what products and active ingredients I used to fade the melasma I developed from my last pregnancy. So today I'm going through all the products I used over the last year in hopes of fading the pigmentation and dark spots. Some worked great, many didn't, and one natural brightening product made the melasma darker! As you'll see in today's video there's definitely a pattern as to what active ingredient really help get rid of hyperpigmentation and melasma, and what ingredients might be great exfoliants and skin brighteners but do nothing for dark patches and pigmentation. So far I've been able to fade 90% of the melasma, so there is hope!

    Hi, thank you so much for your videos! I would like to try Oskia - Renaissance Cleansing Gel, VERDURA naturalternatives - Fruit Complex Facial Mask and The Ordinary - 100% Organic Cold-Pressed Rose Hip Seed Oil. I was wondering if you use the Oskia cleansing gel together with the Frankincense Best Skin Ever? Or is it one or the other? (since they are both cleansing gels..) Also, in your opinion, which one is better against hyperpigmentation? Another thing I would like to ask is if I can use these products and still use an anti-ageing cream 1x day (Uriage, isofill)?
    Thank you and keep up you awesome videos!

    • @InspireBeauty
      @InspireBeauty  5 років тому +2

      Great questions!
      I used the Oskia Cleanser and Frankincense Best Skin Ever at different times. Both work GREAT! I would choose one or the other. If you use the Frankincense BSE, to get the best results, I recommend also using the Living Libations Rose Renewal Frankincense Firming Fluid right after (use that product like you would a serum). So, either get the Oskia or get the two Living Libations products. I can't really say if one worked better than the other, but I will say that the Oskia Cleanser got rid of 80-85% of my melasma, and the last little bit I couldn't get rid of until I switched to using the two Living Libations products, and then all melasma gone. But, if I stop using the Living Libations products, I start seeing tiny amounts of melasma come back, so I presume I have to continue using those products for at least a few months to fully get rid of it.
      As for your question about using the Uriage product, you can continue using it. The only produces that wouldn't work well with the Living Libations products is using strong retinols or prescription retinoids/retinoic acid - that type of product could make your skin too sensitive to essential oils, and if you are using any strong vitamin A derivatives, I would recommend instead to use the Oskia cleanser.

  • @fillyourcup1

    Thank your for all your help, you are wonderful! I have been using the Frankincense BSE along with the Rose Renewal Frankincense ever since I saw your video review. I am just starting my fourth week on these products and I have seen a major difference on several parts of my face where I have the hyper pigmentation; example forehead and side temples but my upper lip area is a lot more stubborn, this is where I got electrolysis many years ago and where the sun just loves to hang no matter how much mineral sunscreen I apply :( I am thinking this hyper pigmentation on the upper lip is not melasma due to the fact that I have applied retin-a on that area. Seems more grey tone. What do you recommend? Is damage like this reversible with a product like Oskia or Living Libations?

    • @InspireBeauty
      @InspireBeauty  5 років тому +2

      I'm so glad to hear your results so far! Keep going with the Living Libations products, it's only been a month, so I would be curious to know what they can do for more of the stubborn pigmentation areas like on your upper lip. It could take 6+ months of consistent use to start seeing some improvements. So don't give up too early.
      The melasma on your upper lip sounds to me to be deeper inflammation, perhaps reaction/damage from the electrolysis, or a combination of electrolysis and other things... I had IPL hair removal on my legs many years ago and I got permanent discolouration of my skin is some areas (I believe I might have been burned by the laser). Unfortunately there can be bad side effects from some of these procedures (terrible!), but I do believe that there's always a possibility of resolving it. In this situation, you don't want to be using products that aggravate the inflammation more, but instead use very anti-inflammatory/soothing products. That's why I think those 2 Living Libations products have worked so well.
      Also, many years ago I had melasma on my upper lip from a fruitarian diet. I was eating way too much fruit (carbs) and I got dark patches on my upper lip. They were a little different than what I had on other parts of my face, they almost appeared raised. Once I reduced carbs in my diet, the melasma went away on it's own without any additional skincare products or treatment (it took about 6 months to go away completely). So, you might want to experiment with your diet reducing sugars and carbs to see if that can help.
      Keep me posted with your progress :)

    I am little confused. When you were explaining about rose hip seeds oil & 2% retinoids squalane . You had two bottle in your two hands. Both of them look a like. Which one you were saying to use by itself for melasma is it rose hip oil or retinoids. Please reply me for that. Your video was very helpful. Thank you.

      Liza Kazi It’s the rosehip seed oil. Try not to layer a bunch of products under it, I find for melasma and brightening, you get better results using it on its own.

    Hi Natasha-
    I’m a new subscriber and I can’t tell you how grateful I am for your videos. My Melasma started towards the end of my pregnancy, almost two years ago.
    I’m interested in purchasing the products mentioned. However, I do have a question about the Oskia Cleanser:
    It sounds like it worked very well for you. So I’d like to try it. However, I do have dryer skin.
    I’m just wondering if there’s a product within the Obagi line, that would work equally?
    Either that or could I still use the cleanser, along with a better moisturizer?

    • @InspireBeauty
      @InspireBeauty  5 років тому

      Hi Kristen,
      You can try the Oskia with a richer moisturizer or facial oil if you encounter dryness. It's not as drying as a foaming cleanser or soap would be, but it's not moisturizing either. I've also had amazing success with two products from Living Libations (Frankincense Best Skin Ever (cleansing oil) and Rose Renewal +Frankincense Firming Fluid (serum). Using these two products together day and night got rid of the remaining stubborn melasma. The combo isn't super moisturizing, so you would need an additional moisturizer on top, but they won't dry out your skin. Here's the video I did reviewing them and how they helped my melasma: ua-cam.com/video/Sw3T3f9QKuQ/v-deo.html
      As for the Obagi products, they use hydroquinone to treat melasma, which can temporarily help fade it. The problem with hydroquinone is you can't stay on it forever, you've got to cycle it by being on it for 3 months, then off of it for another 3 months, and then back again. The feedback I get is when people take the 3 month break from the hydroquinone, it comes right back. I personally have never used hydroquinone, so I can't give you much information on it.

      The CLEAR SKIN Essentials
      Thank you so much for responding!
      Yesss I definitely plan on trying the Living Libations products. More specifically the two you mentioned above.
      So according to my research...Obagi has two systems or two types of skincare. One is the Rx (contains hydroquinone) and the other is the Fx (contains Arbutin, which is equivalent to HQ, except itsbplant derived). From what I gather, the Rx helps to rid your melasma and the Fx is used as your maintenance. Obagi has also come out with a “new and improved” line, which is called Zo Skin Health.
      So many options!!!...Thank you again for responding and sharing your knowledge.
      Checking out your other vid now! Although I think I watched it. But I’m going to double check now.

    • @InspireBeauty
      @InspireBeauty  5 років тому +1

      Yes, there's so many options!!! (better to have too many options than none at all!). I recommend choosing one product/skincare routine and sticking with it for 6 months. Not only do you want to get rid of the melasma, but it's important to know what ingredients work and don't work for you. There's a lot of ingredients and options for fading melasma, and not everyone's skin responds the same way to the different active ingredients, so best to try one ingredient or product line at a time and see what happens. Keep me posted :)

      The CLEAR SKIN Essentials ABSOLUTELY!!

    • @InspireBeauty
      @InspireBeauty  5 років тому

      Consistency is key!! I know for myself, it's hard to stick with one routine, but it's essential, especially with melasma because it takes a while to see results. So you don't want to give up too soon. And as I said, there's A LOT of ingredients you can try to get rid of it, and you'll see that some work great while others do absolutely nothing. I've even used products that are suppose to brighten the skin and help fade melasma, and have done the reverse, made it darker! So best to try one thing at a time and stick with it (and if you use anything that you suspect is making the melasma darker, stop using it immediately).

  • @staceyo1723
    @staceyo1723 5 років тому +3

    Fading after pregnancy is totally different than than non-pregnancy melasma. Your melasma would fade naturally over time as your hormones stabilize and your skin turns over. For people that have it without pregnancy, it’s a different ballgame because the condition is chronic. I don’t get any results from topicals except hydroquinone which I don’t like using. But glad to hear your skin has normalized regardless!

    • @InspireBeauty
      @InspireBeauty  5 років тому +1

      Yes, I completely agree that melasma can be triggered by a number of things, and therefore resolve once those issues balance out or stabilized. I'm curious to see what will happen to my melasma now that I've stopped breastfeeding. I've had melasma on my forehead and sides of my cheeks for the past 6-7 years, but I've also been pregnant twice during that time, and breastfeed each child for 2 years. The shape of the patches and where they are for the most part have always stayed the same, but there's certain things that trigger it to become darker or to fade and "disappear." I feel like it's an underlying inflammatory issue because I can go months where I don't see it, and suddenly something in my routine changes, and those dark patches appear again, always the same shape and location. For me, big triggers are diet, dehydration, increased sun exposure, and irritating skincare products. I even find majority of "brightening" skincare products make my melasma appear darker because they brighten the skin around the melasma, but not the melasma itself.
      The journey continues! :)

    Hi, i have a question. You obviously have tried a lot of products together and your description is good, however I am wondering how do you know what did exactly that when using all the items am and or pm together in a layering or single application.
    Wouldn’t you need to use them seperatley so see individual results to judge?

    • @InspireBeauty
      @InspireBeauty  5 років тому

      Great question! All the products in this video I've used over the past 2-3 years (at least), and at different times. I never used all these products at once. My daily skincare routine tends to be quite minimal - I cleanse, use one serum, and maybe a moisturizer or facial oil (if needed). Once or twice a week I use a mask. Some of these products I've used for a long time (the Oskia cleanser I've been using on and off over the past 7 years - I adore it, and it works amazing for me at getting rid of melasma and overall brightening of the skin). With that said, there's definitely staples in my skincare routine I know have helped, plus other things I tested while using those products to see if it can boost my results. I hope this answers your question.

      I will definitely have to try the turmeric with honey mask! I'm so scared to do the DIY with turmeric. I cook a lot with turmeric and my hands are always stained yellow, I'm afraid the same would happen to my face! But maybe not (I have to try to really know for sure!). I highly recommend the Andalou Mask, it's great. First product I've tried from that line, and I was really impressed. I'll have to try the turmeric & c serum. And yes, rose hip seed oil is awesome. I find it to be a great skin savour if ever I have dryness or irritation, it balances everything so beautifully.

      I know how that feels, but don't give up! And remember, protecting your skin from the sun is just as important as trying to fade it. So make sure to wear good quality mineral sunscreen with at least 15% non-nano zinc oxide, and avoid strong sun.

    Hello! Thank you for this video! I ordered the Oskia cleansing gel and both The Ordinary oils you mentioned in this video. What do you use for a moisturizer during the day? And when do you use the Squalene oil?

    • @InspireBeauty
      @InspireBeauty  5 років тому +2

      For moisturizer during the day, I use my sunscreen. But, if I need extra moisturizing, I like using 2-3 drops of Argan Oil (I like the one from The Ordinary). You can use it under sunscreen, just let it absorb for at least 5-10 minutes before applying sunscreen.
      The Squalane Oil you are using, is it the Granactive Retinoid in Squalane, or just plain Squalane? If it's the Granactive Retinoid, only use at night and make sure to wear sunscreen during the day. If just plain Squalane, you can use that morning and night (as your moisturizer).

    • @InspireBeauty
      @InspireBeauty  3 роки тому

      Depends on the amount of vitamin c. To be honest, I'm not so keen on using Vitamin C during the day (or any exfoliants during the day). If it's a low % it's ok, but above 10-15% best to use at night.

    • @InspireBeauty

      Rosehip oil is pretty rich that you might not need a moisturizer (unless you have dry skin). I recommend trying it without a moisturizer to see. As for my Singapore address, it's a PO box, not office! I live in Bali, but visit Singapore often. My mail has a hard time reaching Indonesia (everything gets "lost" in mail), so I keep a mailbox in Singapore to ensure I receive everything.

    I was at the supermarket and saw organic turmeric, thought to try your suggestion. Washed my face, cut a piece and rubbed it over my cheeks where I have lot of spots, found my fingers and nails already stained. Couple of hours later tried to remove it from my face with makeup remover but persisted, washed and applied my night cream, but in the morning still found colour on my pillow and my nails are still coloured. Lesson learned 🤔

    Is it healthy to use sunscreen or whitening cream while you're on serums?

    • @InspireBeauty
      @InspireBeauty  5 років тому +1

      If you have hyperpigmentation, best to use sunscreen daily. If you're unsure of the safety of combining the products you are using, maybe better to contact the company and ask them if it's safe.

    I love the products from the ordinary. I found their retinoid kind of useless lol. I also agree that acids don’t really help with hyperpigmentation. I have melisma near the hairline as well that hasn’t responded to anything. I’ve tried vitamin c as well but find it too irritating and makes my face itchy lol. Very informative video.

      Yes, I too get back reaction to vitamin C, especially serums containing high amounts. I get enlarged pores from it. I really like The Ordinary Rose Hip Seed Oil. What products from The Ordinary do you like? I've tried a few of their serums but with no success.

    What sunscreen product do you recommend?

    • @InspireBeauty
      @InspireBeauty  5 років тому +2

      I recommend Suntegrity Tinted Face Sunscreen, here's the link: www.theclearskinessentials.com/recommends/suntegrity-tinted-sunscreen.php
      When buying a sunscreen, make sure the main UV filter is zinc oxide, there should be a higher % of zinc than other UV filter ingredients (for example, more % of zinc than titanium dioxide or other chemical filters) I find the protection is much better when sunscreens that have at least 15% zinc oxide (Badger, Juice Beauty, Drunk Elephant all have zinc sunscreens). If you buy a Korean or Japanese sunscreen, it must be PA++++ (not PA+, PA++, or PA+++).

    Do you really need to exfoliate very sensitive skin? I can't find anything gentle enough but I don't want to ruin my skin by not doing it

    • @InspireBeauty
      @InspireBeauty  6 років тому +1

      No, if you have sensitive skin and can't tolerate exfoliation, don't! Your body naturally exfoliates your skin, and so does even washing your face. Never do more than your skin can tolerate cause we don't want to risk messing up your skin, it's not worth it!

    Okay, let's say I want to try to use the fresh turmeric. Can you buy the fresh root, cut it and keep rubbing the same piece on the skin until it dries out? Should you slice it off after use for sanitary purposes? Also I assume I should buy black pillowcases haha.

    • @InspireBeauty
      @InspireBeauty  6 років тому +1

      Awesome you are going to try it. Please keep me posted! Yes, get the fresh root and slice it open, use on skin and then leave out at room temperature. Next time you use it, you'd slice the exposed part off and use again. Great idea about the black pillow case!! :)

    • @InspireBeauty

      Liza Kazi I personally only use it at night. It’s a fragile oil and I live in the tropics with strong sun, so I don’t want to risk it degrading from the sunlight.

    • @InspireBeauty
      @InspireBeauty  4 роки тому +1

      It won't hurt to leave it on (and it might work better), but some people's skin stains from the turmeric - so you have to experiment (don't worry, it's not a permanent stain). I recommend experimenting on a day that if your skin does get a little stained, you don't have to go anywhere important.

      Don't give up! Protecting your skin from the sun can protect against the pigmentation getting worse. Whatever you can do to be super healthy too can help speed up your skin's repair.

      Diet too can help. Many times pigmentation is connected to our hormones, and adjusting your diet can help balance things out. Here's a video to check out: ua-cam.com/video/rEudrnmDp3Q/v-deo.html

    I went on vacation back in April to south FL. I used a very strong sunblock. My last day, I was out at the pool early in the day, and came home with freckles! I decided to try Peter Thomas Roth Potent-C. I saw results in one month. My skin was brighter and freckles faded. In June, I saw optimal results, so I use it now 3 times a week at night for maintenance.

    • @InspireBeauty
      @InspireBeauty  5 років тому +2

      It can be. It's definitely worth trying. I've had it 3 times over the past ten years, and I've been able to get rid of it every time (it does take a while to fade it and you have to be extra cautious with preventing it from coming back - but definitely worth the time and effort).
