Holy Crap!!! This This THIS T-H-I-S is unreal. I'm a jazz pianist/vocalist & Arranger. You all made me cry. Perfect, fantastic...I am SO impressed. Beautifully done. THIS is how is should be played!! LOL Thank you Bless you all !!!!!
WOW!! Steve!! Crazy what I find when I go surfing thru UA-cam!! Sounds great, friend! You've come a loooooooonnnnng way from us crankin' some Maynard in your car! LOL Stay well!
The playing is completely killer, the arrangement is OUT OF THIS WORLD! I've already listened to this 3 times, and I'm loving every bit of it! Thank you for this excellent post of an already cool song, pumped up to the 16th power of cool! AWESOME!
THIS is how this song should have been done originally. It highlights excellent musicianship all over the place. No pitch shifting or computers needed, or wanted. Just all humans making music. Awesome.
This is the kind of "good" that makes you want to throw things in disbelief. I mean... that was unreal. So great to see all the great talent that I've been seeing in liner notes for the last 30 years. Incredible. (Special shout out to John Eric Hammond who is just an absolute beast no matter what he's playing. Whether it's The Smoking Section or Dogs of Peace and everything in between, this guy is just unreal.)
I was just looking for some inspiration as I singing this song with a big band in London next week and I stumbled across this work of genuis. Amazing! I can safely say that I have definetely been inspired. Thank Funk for guys like you!
Wow! Thanks for the music. You have been drawn into the music by the bassist as you want to get deeper. His embeleshments are his own but also following the written arrangement, listening to the rest of the ensemble and enjoying it! The bass lines define the harmonic progressions of the arrangement for folk like us. He must be a treasured must have bassist for projects like this! A blessing.
God damn !! You guys are all just amazing. Beautiful arrangement and tight chord voicings. I'm primarily a bassist so, Gary - Jesus man ! Inspirational.
Fantastic. I’d have to say the horns are amazing. Nobody playing behind like so many horns do. It’s like they are rhythm section players that happen to own horns. Top notch!!!
I had the chance to play 2nd tenor sax at the Jazzaar Festival where we played three of your arrangements. All of them were absolutely great and so much fun to play. Even Billy Cobham loved your arrangement on Red Baron. Thank you so much!
This song is a well crafted, brilliantly performed and choreographed offering from Bruno Mars and, the remixes are also wonderful video art. Remember the songs that this song is crafted from come from Sly and the Family Stone's West Coast Funk grooves from the 60's, "Living In America" with James Brown quotes and, of course, you can't miss Cool and the Gang's" mega hit "Ladies Night"..... and that's just the original. The first time I heard it I was transfixed by this incredible mash up and sleek, slick, pop funk, homage to the generation that spawned some of the greatest music in history right from the 60s funk, 70s fusion era, into the 80's. Being turned on to this by one of Portland Oregon's top T-Bone calls, Jeff Uusitalo, I was further thrilled and lifted by Tim Akers Smoking Section's version. This version has the added tribute (harmonically) to Donald Fagan, George Duke fusion and an "East Coast Funk" meets "West Coast Funk", all without over statement. F*&^ing Brilliant!!!! Don't miss what Tim's act does with "Shake It Off" by Taylor Swift. They have taken yet a another formulaic and universal pop song (with an incredible high budget video i might add) and turned it into a brilliant work. A next level piece of audio art. Real "Ear Candy". Both of these offerings are real masterpieces performed with real heart and articulation of soul. Love me some smokin' Smoking Section. Dance. Just sayin'
this version is really really really good! cant stop listen. i cant say its better then the original but its funky, its fresh its something to listen atleast 1000 times!!
All of it is AMAZING but tune goes to another level at the horn breakdown around 3:30 until the end. Just so much hip stuff happening with layer upon layer of serious music happening right to the very end. SPECTACULAR!!!
Fantastic re-harmonization of this song! Someone asked in an earlier post, and I'm asking as well, is this arrangement available yet for purchase? Are you going to make it available for purchase?
This arrangement is so freakin' awesome .... and with a lotta love and respect for the classics ;) EWF "Can't Let Go" , Gino Vanelli "Santa Rosa", Chaka & Rufus "You Got The Love" and probably even more ....
Goddamn I loves me some horn section! These guys have session musicians written all over them. Tight as shit, reharmonized to hell and back, I fucking love it. Great job guys!
I cannot get this out of my head, and our band definitely needs a copy of this for next season (plus horn section parts, but I love coming up with those).
Tight.! Imagine what these guys sound like if they were in the same room, playing together and playing off each other. I know it sounds impossible but guaranteed it sounds even better than this.
The tightest, funkiest groove that you will hear ANYWHERE online. And that bass player?? Amazing.
That’s Gary Lunn! He’s a beast!
Bass player is a stone cold monster. Wow.
You noticed! He's nearly in all of my gospel CDs in the 80s and 90s man.
None better ANYWHERE!@@garyjohnson4988

OMFG! That was the most amazing display of talent, musicianship and clever arranging I think I have ever seen.
*Killing version of Uptown Funk. This smokes the (excellent) original version IMO.*
Rob Michael This is the original version.
yeah I can't listen to the original anymore because i'm expecting to hear these grooves and licks.
@@timhall5256 no it’s not
I don't think mere words can adequately describe just how skillful these musicians perform. I thoroughly enjoy listening to them!
This song should called as "if uptown funk was really a funk song" :v
Top session musicians getting it down, love it love it love it ❤️ ❤️❤️❤️
This just kills... every musician included here is a master of their respective instrument. We need a lot more of this!!!
best rendition I've heard so far. brings a maturity to this sometime juvenile funk. the hidden jazz version. beautiful!!
The playing is completely killer, the arrangement is OUT OF THIS WORLD! I've already listened to this 3 times, and I'm loving every bit of it! Thank you for this excellent post of an already cool song, pumped up to the 16th power of cool! AWESOME!
WOW! Amazing! First time I heard this version and I like it so much!! Thanks Tim Akers & The Smoking Section
Real musicians ladies and gentlemen.
Absolutely sensational on every level. Awesome musicians and what an amazing arrangement, very soulful!
Yep. After this, no one else should touch this song.
You ain't lyin Stephen Edgerton and know that there will be plenty of "covers of THIS cover" , attempted "versions of THIS version" for sure!
Stephen Edgerton BABY!!! Tim is a friend of mine! His band is just that.. HOT!!!
Agreed.
+stillphil Workin on one right now!
Stay tuned.
+Stephen Edgerton Agreed
THIS is how this song should have been done originally. It highlights excellent musicianship all over the place. No pitch shifting or computers needed, or wanted. Just all humans making music. Awesome.
Amen....
I think you will find computers were definitely needed and used ( to brilliant affect I might add )
A DAW shows up in this video more than once.
@@officialvisaural What does DAW stand for please.

Dang, that drummer can change shirts faster than anybody.
hahaha...saw that...bad edit:)
Trombonist also has AWESOME tone when using ground-breaking "inhaling technique".
He’s probably a superhero.
Oh, oh, oh--one of the best covers of Uptown Funk. EVER! Owwwww!
I was just looking for some inspiration as I singing this song with a big band in London next week and I stumbled across this work of genuis. Amazing! I can safely say that I have definetely been inspired. Thank Funk for guys like you!

I'd kill for that bass tone. FAT!
It would appear that 69 people are dead from the feet up.
Wow...just wow!!
Does the thing the bassist play at 1:43 have a name. I'm thinking is it a specific technique, besides "just" slapping and being a beast?
+Mikkel Frandsen You nailed it.
+Mikkel Frandsen Just standard slapping and popping from what I can tell, he's just bloody good at it.
It's a "directed" fill by Doug from Tim (arranger)- and sure shows off his chops and taste... whew
And what kind of bass is that Gary's playing. Any body know?
Search Victor Wooten techniques and all will be revealed
Simply amazing!
Which band! Absolutely fantastic! High level musicians! Chic comes in my mind!!
I had the chance to play 2nd tenor sax at the Jazzaar Festival where we played three of your arrangements. All of them were absolutely great and so much fun to play. Even Billy Cobham loved your arrangement on Red Baron. Thank you so much!
