  • It was definitely time for some new cymbals, so I decided on the Zildjian K Sweet pack that includes 15"/38cm hi hats, a 17"/44cm crash, a 19"/48cm crash and a 21"/53cm ride.
    Let's open up the box and hear how they sound!
    0:00 Intro
    1:11 Unboxing the pack
    2:32 Old/broken cymbals I'm replacing
    6:18 Cymbal swap
    8:02 Individual cymbal samples
    10:11 Full kit demo

    Just some constructive criticism for you. I noticed that you really lay into your cymbals quite heavy. If you ease off of them about 50%, they will last forever. I had several cymbals break years ago and I couldn't figure out why all of a sudden they were breaking. A friend used to play my drums when I wasnt around and I noticed my cymbals were breaking. One day he asked me if he could play them (while I was there) and I said yes. He hit the cymbals very hard, and I knew that was why they were breaking. Just my 2 cents. I admire your passion sir.

      Not only that but hitting the "meat" of the cymbal instead of the edge will help the cymbal longevity plus stick longevity. It could be something as simple as adjusting the height of your drum throne so you're not hitting the outside.

      @someroomtodrum  Рік тому +2

      @@suburbanindie exactly. After this video I lowered my cymbal height and I’ve been aiming more for the cymbal body with the stick shoulder. Haven’t broken a stick since!

    I just got this same cymbal pack. I've never bought a cymbal pack before; always individual cymbals. I was really excited. I totally love the 15 hi-hats and the 17 is my favorite crash cymbal I've ever owned. The 21 ride has a very nice ping, bell and is really crash-able but in all honesty it's a little washy and for reasons I can't really say I'm not crazy about the 19 yet. I haven't had a chance to hear them from a distance (audience perspective) yet. I've had other cymbals in the past that I didn't really like close up but sound great once you're not right next to them (Zildjian 18 uptown ride in particular). I'm going to give them some time and see if I change my mind on the 19 and the 21.

    For me the only way to buy new cymbals is going to a music store and play them before I buy. I would never take the risk of buying online (which is what I'm guessing you did) and find out how they actually sound at home. No one cymbal is the same. You can put 10 17" K crashes in a row and find out that some sound better than others. I've been in the situation where I could do this several times and some cymbals were actually sounding pretty bad... Your new cymbals sound great by the way. So you're lucky :-) Enjoy them and, like other people said in the comments, they will sound even better if you hit them a little more gentle (mainly the crashes). I also had to learn this the hard way 🙂

    I have the 16", 18" and 19" crashes and they record beautifully. Almost like the 602 Modern Essentials but with a bit more meat in the sound. They look great with your kit too! Only thing I'd say is they might be a bit thin for how hard you hit. If you start breaking them I'd switch to larger A Custom Medium/Heavy crashes. Also, I'd replace the Wuhan. A student of mine had one and it sounded brutal, A Custom Ultra Hammered is maybe Zildjian's sweetest sounding china. Anyway, enjoy!

      @@someroomtodrum Makes them sound better too, with most of the force going to the kick or snare hit that usually accompanies the crash, and the crash hit is more drawing the sound out of the cymbal. Todd Sucherman's a master at it.
      Regarding the china, if it's anything like my student's, it's about a 14" and really thick and the sound is like nails on a chalkboard. A nice big 19" or 20" china would round out that kit perfect!

Just my worthless 2 cents on technique, but it did strike me that you hit the cymbals, especially the crashes, a lot harder than is necessary to get a good sound. It looks like you hit the cymbals more from the shoulder and elbow instead of the wrist. That may be why those poor "old" cymbals look like they were tossed into the wood chipper. Those new K's don't deserve a similar fate. Play them like the musical instruments they are and not like trash can lids and your investment will last.

Also in regards to your hi hats, I would loosen the top hat a bit, will give you a bit more wash but will also make them last a lot longer.

    My advice, try hitting them a little bit less hard, trust me, you will have more sustain and a way better sound! Those are not cheap b8 cymbals with no sustain, those are b20 with a huge sustain, so trust me, dont go too hard on them, and you will have a better sound, and cymbals for days, even for life if you hit them correctly
