I go to Egypt in about 10 days as part of a group to Cairo, Nile, Alexandria. I am packing as light as possible, including shorts and short-sleeve polos. Looking forward to this adventure.
Once again. An amazing video by you Gus. I’m fascinated by how much you help us with your knowledge and educating us on visiting Egypt. Also as being so charming 🙈☺️
Great video! I agree with a lot of what you said, I would just comment and say that if you’re headed to a church in Egypt, I would still plan to be in pants and cover shoulders instead of just wearing whatever. You might get less comments in a church but I would still say that it’s much more respectful to walk into a house of worship with more reverence to the place. Otherwise, great video! Thanks for sharing!
Thank you, Peter! I always appreciate it when folks who know more than I do share-I’m constantly learning more about Egypt, the culture, and how to be respectful.
@@EgyptAdventuresTravel You're welcome! It's my pleasure. No, I'm not living in Egypt but I'm a first-generation American-Egyptian and I just spent a few weeks in Egypt over the summer.
It gets pretty cold in March and mid April in Cairo and also in Alexandria-I always recommend packing and wearing layers you can take off or put on as you need to.
Flying out tomorrow man wish I found this video earlier! For men in shorts (in the city) is there a length I should shoot for? Like is above the knee cool? 🙏 thank you!
Above the knee is fine for men, but it’ll bring more stares, but won’t cause any issues. I would avoid going more than 1” above the knee. No need for men to cover their head or hair anywhere. Have a great trip!
I leave for Jordan and Egypt on Wednesday for a bucket-list/60th birthday trip. What about laundry facilities? Are coin-ops common or do you have to use the probably-overpriced hotel services? I'll be bringing one suitcase and one carry-on and don't want to go 3 weeks without washing my clothes.
I’d recommend using laundry services through your hotel. I’ve never seen a laundromat or coin operated machines in Egypt, but almost every hotel can arrange laundry for a reasonable fee. Have fun!
You will always want to layer up November-April anywhere in Egypt! You do not need a heavy jacket, but having a selection of undershirts, overshirts, a couple sweaters, and a moderately warm jacket is a great idea.
Just because you have the privilege to wear what you want doesn’t mean you need to flaunt that in faces of the culture you are visiting. Respect should always be the first thing in a travellers mind. Sadly it seems to be the most privileged who are the rudest and disrespectful when travelling.
Thank you for watching and sharing-respect when traveling is of paramount importance. What I mean by privilege isn’t that foreigners have the privilege to wear what they want in Egypt even though it’s disrespectful, it’s that the idea of what’s considered disrespectful sometimes has to do with the privilege of being a foreigner. Oftentimes, foreigners in Egypt are viewed as “others” and “outsiders”, and have a different rulebook, so to speak. So something an Egyptian person wears that might be considered disrespectful probably would not be disrespectful on a foreign person, especially if that person visually does not look Egyptian. Thanks for allowing me to explain the nuance of what I meant in more detail.
Gus! Where was the advice for MEN? I waited and watched because the description said "what men and women should pack" but the entire video was about women.
Not a crazy question at all! That's why at the beginning of the video I note that there is no such thing as "men's" or "women's" clothes...folks can wear whatever they want! In Egypt, a female tourist wearing masculine clothes is no problem at all, but I would still stick to my friend Liz's rule of thumb and do "no shoulders, no midriff, no knees, and no cleavage". So wearing masculine shorts and a tank top would not be a good idea, but wearing masculine pants and a t-shirt, no problem. I have done trips in the past with women who wear traditionally masculine clothes (and have very short haircuts), and no one has said anything. They might get some stares, but nothing that made them feel uncomfortable. Hope that all makes sense! Thank you for your question!
as a man, I would never wear shorts in a Muslim country. Also, I am black so stuff that white friends can get away with I cannot. Egypt is one of the few places in the world where seeing it on UA-cam is not enough would love to see it in person.
You’re totally right-anyone should definitely think about if Egypt is the right place for them to visit, and I’ve talked with many women who ultimately decide it’s not the place for them to visit, while many women decide that they do want to visit, while being informed about what their experience might be like. It’s not the right choice for everyone, just like anywhere in the world.
In the summertime I definitely wear sleeveless shirts in Egypt and it’s ok for foreign men to do so (I even have a handful of Egyptian friends who’ve started wearing sleeveless shirts in summertime), but yes, if you want to be more conservative, definitely avoid it. On a Nile Cruise or when at a resort on the beach though, feel free to wear sleeveless shirts anytime!
talked super quickly? i literally had to put it on double speed so i didn't fall asleep. bullet points are all anyone has to make.....lifes too short to waste more than 5-10mins of your own time on watching videos.
I disagree-anyone can wear whatever clothes they want. However, in Egypt, it’s best to be mindful of what to wear and how people perceive folks of different genders and the clothes they wear.
There’s definitely separate gender clothes, a man shouldn’t wear a dress sorry just my opinion. If you’re a dude and you’re wearing a dress, defo got issues

Awh, I’m blushing! Thank you! So excited for you guys to visit Egypt soon.
Another great vid Gus! Travel dates Feb 25…Probably will pack long pants 💯
Definitely!
Great video. Perfect amount of specificity. I head to Egypt soon and this is very helpful!

My name is the weather tomorrow and I'm going to Egypt bye-bye😊❤😮🎉
Have a good trip!
Hey!! Great video can u tell me how the weather could be like march -april and if i can wear thin clothes

Also where should I buy one of those sweet head wraps? Or is that a religious thing i honestly don’t know 😅 I have ball caps if it isn’t appropriate

Question, what is their weather like in the winter? Like February and March especially, do I need to layer up pretty well?

So, at the beach or hotels swimming pools, I can wear Speedo style swim trunks?
Yes 👍🏼

And how do these other cultures respect ours exactly when they move here !!!!
Gus! Where was the advice for MEN? I waited and watched because the description said "what men and women should pack" but the entire video was about women.
Sure, my advice for men starts at 1:30 👍🏼
I'm going in September and all of my shorts are above the knee plus both of my legs are fully tattooed, im assuming I'll get a lot of stares
Yes, you will, but it’s definitely allowed to wear shorts! You may be asked to cover your knees though when going inside a mosque.
What was the weather like for you in September?
Im visiting there next month.
Im planning to just bring some shorts but i have some tattoos. Is this fine?
Yes, tattoos are fine. They will definitely draw attention, but Egyptians know that foreigners sometimes have tattoos.
Crazy question? What if you are a woman who wears "masculine" clothes? I feel like I don't fit either description.
Not a crazy question at all! That's why at the beginning of the video I note that there is no such thing as "men's" or "women's" clothes...folks can wear whatever they want!

Thank you for sharing your perspective-I hope you can go to Egypt one day! Get in touch when you’re ready to start planning 👍🏼.
I feel that’s an oversimplification. I’m an Egyptian man and lived in Dubai and Kuwait as well. I wore shorts in all three of them and it was normal.
Ya man you can wear shorts in Egypt as man
W are Egyptian teenagers wearing shorts no problem with that
But the old men do not wear it
Thank you for sharing your perspective as a local ❤️. I’ve noticed more and more Egyptians wearing shorts, but like you said, mostly younger people.
I'm egyptian and i wear shorts and t shirt in summer lol we are free country
I’m glad you wear what is comfortable for you! I also wear shorts and tshirts in the summer in Egypt, too.
What's the temperature in September in degrees Celsius
“men’s rules women must obey” patriarchy extremes makes one valuate where women might visit.
You’re totally right-anyone should definitely think about if Egypt is the right place for them to visit, and I’ve talked with many women who ultimately decide it’s not the place for them to visit, while many women decide that they do want to visit, while being informed about what their experience might be like. Costs make up 15 to 20 %
What do you mean?
Copts*
lol ..actually 60% of muslim women in Egypt doesnt cover their hair..not only christian women..may be you are talking about poor local places in Egypt
Sleeveless should also be avoided for men, women can wear it, but not too short.
