Why would the inspector be wrong about bonding the metal poles for the pool? Was it outside the perimeter bond of the pool or were they just insulated by the cups they went into? I thought in one of the examples where the lifeguard was electrocuted it was due to one of the handrails not being bonded. Just trying to understand things a bit better. Thanks for all you do, have learned a lot from you and your team.

Fire is one of the consequences of an electrical accident, when arc faults happen. It's also the risk we are trying to prevent by sizing electrical equipment to have enough conductive mass, to avoid accumulating dangerous temperatures that could cause fires.

Rather than call it “Electrical Theory” (eyes glaze over for many), “Electrical Fundamentals” or “Electrical Essentials” conveys as sense of practicality and of application.

Why is it "electrical theory" and not "electrical fact"? :)

    • @carultch
      @carultch Рік тому

Because theory doesn't mean a guess or a hunch. A lot of people confuse theory with hypothesis. A theory is a body of knowledge that explains a family of concepts, and is scientifically proven beyond a reasonable doubt, based on our best understanding in the present day.
A fact is one piece of data on which a theory is based. A theory puts numerous facts together, and builds a model to explain why those facts are true from fundamental principles.
The distinction between theory and practice, is that a lot more factors come in to play in practice, that might not show up in a simple application of the theory. As an example, assuming you have nominal voltage at your service point, and basing your calculations off of it, is an example of theory. Theoretically, you are supposed to have 120V line to neutral, and 240V line to line, on a split-phase service. In practice, the exact voltage at your service point is a moving target, that varies with the loads your neighbors consume throughout the day.

@@carultch Because theory doesn't mean a guess or a hunch.
-It kind of does. It really depends on which subject & semantic definition you use. this has, and is, one of my absolute hatreds of the modern human race: that we use the same word, with no segregative prefix added, for up to DOZENS of different definitions. I literally have a laundry list worth of modern English words we use (even in Trades & Sciences) that area cause of critical confusion, but unless you are in trades/sciences long enough, you won't know what is really trying to be communicated.
A lot of people confuse theory with hypothesis.
-I, and the dictionaries, agree with you that both are different; but one overlaps to the other, unfortunately.
A theory is a body of knowledge that explains a family of concepts, and is scientifically proven beyond a reasonable doubt, based on our best understanding in the present day.
-If that was truly the only definition, then being called a "conspiracy theorists" wouldn't be so bad.
A fact is one piece of data on which a theory is based.
      -Correct.
A theory puts numerous facts together, and builds a model to explain why those facts are true from fundamental principles.
      -this CAN be correct, too.
The distinction between theory and practice,
-I don't think the OP was drawing a distinction between "theory and practice" but rather "theory and fact".
is that a lot more factors come in to play in practice, that might not show up in a simple application of the theory.
-Correct, but that is precisely what the Op is getting at, which is that (as with your example) the "theories" of many features, characteristics, and ACTIONS of "electricity" are FACTUALLY DEMONSTRATIVE & REPEATABLE, so they are no longer "moving targets", but rather fixed targets; therefore, they are FACTS, and not "theory". I truly depreciate that modern English dictionaries of layman use allowed for "theory" to get added the definition you've mentioned for it, when that definition ALWAYS had fit just FINE with the word "fact", even with nuance differences, they should of left it with that word only.
