  • @spazione
    @spazione 2 роки тому +1

    the module is really interesting to me. Some questions:
    Is there a way to share the shuffle tempo with other modules? I'm not talking about the streight foward tempo sync but the shuffle mode. For example to do this thing on the Beatstep pro the only way is share a drum line track with all steps filled up.
    I'm curious about the drum patters. Are there only pre built patters? How many? I would like to know how much can evolve them via cv modulation.

    • @DivKid
      @DivKid  2 роки тому +2

      There's a sync output which is a steady straight clock and a subdivided output which shares the shuffle setting. So presuming you have other sequencers that will clock with 1 pulse per step you can then sync up everything else to this too.
      You can make and save patterns and cycle through them and also step edit easily. Push the encoder to add a beat then twist to move through the steps and push to add/remove a note of that step.

    Anyone who's interested in how to get Dillaesque rhythms should read Dan Charnas' incredible book Dilla Time. In it he shows how Dilla didn't just play everything unquantised. He actually used a complex combination of multiple types of quantisation, both straight and swung, applied to the different drum parts

    • @nov3c
      @nov3c 2 роки тому +1

      Edit: forgot to say that I think this is a cool module. I'm not sure if it should really have Dilla's name on the panel even if it Does replicate little bits of his technique but it's great for there to be things out there that easily add more complex forms of swing than the majority of sequencers that haven't progressed past the lm-2. Huge credit to Roger Linn for that initial design and the MPCs that enabled Dilla to build those techniques

    Let me attempt to help us get up to speed with the current state of Stolperbeats.
    In the previous firmware, both envelopes/lfos would fire whenever you sent a trigger to the reset input. When I emailed MSM to report this as a bug they replied saying this was intentional to the design of the new firmware. This seemed not to align with the ability to choose the event to which each of the two CV outputs is aligned (as stated in the “Envelope and LFO OUT” section of the manual). When I asked why they changed this behavior they responded that they simply thought it was a good idea and implemented it while creating the latest update. I still can't figure out what the idea behind that design change was, or why they would alter such a fundamental behavior and not tell anyone. The behavior was reverted in the next firmware with no word of why they would flip-flop the design like this.
    This is an example of how it went with a single aspect in 1 of the nearly 10 firmware versions that have been released, each one creating new bugs. Not all updates would fix previous issues; sometimes compounding them. If anyone needs to decipher this statement as true/crazy just look at the changelogs yourself. You can find them on the firmware page. I will also quote the latest changelog below:
    Changelog 163
    “Fix: Adjusts behavior of ENV 1 + 2 with and externally triggered reset. Env 1 + 2 used to reset (and fire) with the triggered reset. Instead they now retain the last value over a reset until triggered as set.
    Fix: Sync x1, x2, x4 fire on start of bar. Was offset by a quarter note. Introduced in 157, fixed in 161.
    Fix: Patterns were not playing back correctly in Flam (yellow) and Slop (white) Feeling. Introduced in 162, fixed in 163.”
    This list shows the bugs in SB aren't isolated to the reset input, and the necessary adjustments don't only support advanced users; these changes address diverse and fundamental issues that need to be resolved for casual users as well. If you look at the previous changelogs you will find the same situation, this has been a longstanding pattern.
    I have found multiple bugs in 163 myself, but I can confirm the current firmware does have at least 1 bug known to the manufacturer. When I emailed MSM about these issues I got this response:
    “There will be a firmware that fixes the resets.”
    This response was received on 6/27/24
    While brief, the reply does confirm their knowledge of one of SB’s current issues which causes the sequencer to jump to random places at random times when receiving a reset input. I do hope MSM will address this issue in the next firmware, but they cannot seem to create an update that doesn't introduce a new bug, so be careful what you wish for.
    At this point, I don't feel I can trust MSM to deliver Stolperbeats as a stable product for any level of user.

    How is velocity of the drums handled on this module? Are the hi-hats all programmed at the same volume, or is the volume/velocity of the hi-hats varied?
    Also, can you program your own beats, or can you only select from pre-programmed patterns?

    • @DivKid
      @DivKid  2 роки тому +1

      Hi Brian, you can step sequence all the parts if you like. Or used save patterns and work through them twisting the encoders. It doesn't handle any velocity sequencing. These are just trigger outputs meant for trigger/gate inputs on other modules.
      Velocity is an important part of a groove but with Eurorack you would need to have separate inputs that work with varying voltages for the velocity element of a patch. Trigger ins don't respond to varying voltage they simple make something happen (envelope on and off, drum sound fires etc).
      One way to approach it would be drive a separate sequencer with the rhythm. So taking the hi hat output to trigger your hi hat but also using it to progress through a voltage sequence. Then use that sequence voltage to influence the velocity of the hi hat. Either directly on the hi hat module if it has an input for it or (most likely) patching the hi hat into a VCA and adjusting the level in a VCA.
      As it's modular "everything is possible" but by going with a modular mindset and approach and building up series of functions with more modules. (at the expense and space/case cost too of course).
      None of that is exclusive to this sequencer I should add, that's just how trigger sequencers and trigger inputs work within the format.

      @@DivKid Thanks, Div. I’ll have to see what options exist to achieve this. As you noted, cost and rack space are an issue, so I’ll need to find the most simple solution. Is this a topic you will cover with your more in-depth demo?

      what bugs? I haven't kept up with the development but I still use and enjoy it on whatever firmware I'm on.

    • @BeatnikHimself
      @BeatnikHimself 7 місяців тому

      The current issue with SB is that the envelopes fire at time whnpen they are not programmed when externally clocking and resetting the module. This come on the back of an issue where it would not reset at all if the reset pulse came at the same time as a clock tick. At the same time? As this last bug there was an issue with the envelopes firing at the beginning of each bar when the module was externally clocked. These bugs would be super obvious to anyone who actually flexes the module. I'm a little disappointed someone who gets sponsored for reviewing modules didn't notice. Please pay closer attention when making reviews in the future.
      Each time MSM trying to fix the module they end up creating a new bug. I have lost all hope that Stolperbeats will ever work as intended or described. It feels more like a hobby kit than a commercial product, and the community has been super hostile towards my efforts to help fix these many issues. I advise anyone thinking of purchasing a module from MSM to move on and find a better company to support.

    • @DivKid
      @DivKid  7 місяців тому +1

      I don't externally clock it, so I haven't seen these issues. When I use it, it's the clock.
      "please pay closer attention when making reviews in the future" ... wow ok that feels rude. As does the "anyone that flexes it" comment. I haven't made a review of it, at all. I made a quick introductory preview video. I also don't make reviews, it's not an opinion piece.
      RE the community getting hostile, you're coming off as rude, which I really don't think is your intention at all, I think you mean well for me here and for the module and what things to be good for everyone. But you're probably getting peoples backs up with your approach which will then shut down valid and good things you have to offer.
      I realise that may come off as rude from me, which isn't my intention at all. If I took some sort of offence or dislike I wouldn't reply, it's just a polite response to how this is coming off.

    • @BeatnikHimself
      @BeatnikHimself 7 місяців тому

      @@DivKid Not trying to be rude, but I feel these bugs were super easy to find. And yes, anyone who actually flexes the device would find them pretty quick. It took me less than a day after each firmware update to find the new bug. And like I said, SB has never worked properly or as described. So it is tough to see that not a single video covering this module mentions any of the issues Stopler has.
      Another synthfluencer pushed back on my comments telling me firmware 160 was stable when it is not. And then threw more false information at me to try and prove me wrong. However, I am in current communication with MSM and helped initiate the past 4 firmware updates. This is difficult to deal with and to me quite rude.
      I want to trust your community, but it's been getting more and more difficult when these bugs are not discovered or not disclosed.
      As painful as it might be to hear, this lack of ability to find obvious issues with Stoplerbeats needs to be addressed. Maybe you could do the community a favor and look into the current issues and make a video to help inform MSM. This would be a great help!

    • @DivKid
      @DivKid  7 місяців тому +1

      The bugs might be easy to find if that's the feature you're using. If people aren't using that feature, and are otherwise very happily using it then it simply won't come up.
      Synthfluencer, haha, funny term that one. Anyway I can't speak for anyone else or the results they're getting. I haven't tried the issue you've mentioned, or any of the firmware updates. So I can't pushback or comment on it at all.
      It's worth remembering that Euro companies are often one or two people that are working hard, often for the love of it, it's not an industry people get into for the money. It's nice to hear MSM are taking on board the feedback and working on firmware updates. I hope that continues and gets to any bug squashes.
      RE trust my community, what community? Me or Eurorack in general? I can't speak for other companies or users. Had I made a comprehensive demo then yeah I'd stress test and try to bug find and look at all the features properly. I haven't done that for Stolperbeats nor have I claimed to.
      Unfortunately I don't have time to go hunting for bugs or to make videos trying to get into it. I know that MSM wouldn't give me special treatment over their users though so if you're speaking to them they'll be on the case best they can be.
      The best approach is always going to be politely and with a friendly tone to engage with people, but as I say this is coming across rude (I know you don't mean it to be) and you've been that way with other things on my channel and I imagine elsewhere. Often with the tone of just telling people to outright avoid companies altogether. If that's what you're telling people to do, you have to understand that's not going to lead to people working hard to fix any potential issues, or to take feedback on board. When that's the takeaway message to what you're saying it's not helpful to anyone.
