Even in GTA Online, buying a yacht is a waste of money. Unlike other expensive vehicles, like armored cars, sports cars, and military aircraft, yachts have no utility outside of wealth flexing
When they say Zuckerberg's boat hosts 24, they mean that there are accommodations for 24 people to sleep and live on the boat. This is a huge boat. A house with rooms for 24 people would be huge, a boat that can house 24 people people is gigantic. The boat itself can probably hold a few hundred people, they just won't each have their own bed.
It wouldnn't have 24 individual rooms for the guests, but it is based on the assumption that there are 2 guest per room. Still huge though and you're right about how many people you could fit on it for a party.
the funny thing is that everyone knows that its 'fake rich flexing' and yet its still given as much importance and attention as it is, and people still get FOMO from it
It’s advertising, people know it’s influencing their decision but that doesn’t matter advertising still works. (And those that say “advertising doesn’t work on them tend to be the ones it works the most on.)
As someone who spent years in sea scouts the best description I've heard of owning a boat (not a yacht just a boat/ship) is "a hole in the water that you throw money into". I've always liked the idea of living in a house that can also move but even the overpriced RV market is a lot cheaper then boating. If I ever do get one it will just be a canoe with an outboard.
My husband and I are boat people, who first bonded over a shared dream of eventually living on a sail boat. And even in the small sailing yacht world that we find ourselves in it's ridiculous how many people don't actually like to sail and only have a boat for the purpose of showing it off. I know a boat owner who during regattas spends all his time below deck playing games on his phone. Its completely absurd

I was in London in October for work and saw a super yacht parked next to the Tower Bridge. I asked coworkers who owned it and it belonged to the owner of the Jacksonville Jaguars NFL team since there was a London NFL game that week. I did some Googling and he rents it out for over $5 million a week which includes tax and tips. Yikes.
1:19 also, you live full time in your house, which is also a necessity. Meaning that those hidden costs may be justified even aside from tbe appreciating value of the property. The yacht, on the other hand, is a luxury used maybe once a year, if that.
Some friends and I chartered a yacht for two weeks. It cost us about $4000 per person including food, fuel and alcohol. It was fantastic fun and none of us got seasick, though two people were using Dramamine.
When visiting the yacht port of Monaco I was really shocked. There was one giant yacht, bigger than our house and it was so absurd to see its dimensions. Have you thought about making a video on new car loans? I feel like it’s very common for people to get into cars they can’t afford. I’m curious what groups are affected the most by this. The few stats I’ve heard give me the impression that there is a lot to dive into. For example, I believe car loans have surpassed credit card or student loan debt. A yacht for them is just like...I don't know...buying a cool electric bike for us. Its a fun little toy with some extra benefits like transit etc. The perspective is way too different. We can't fathom how it is to just thro 100mil on a yacht just like that and don't even feel a difference in your wallet when we have to stop and think before spending 50 or 100 dollars because it feels like A LOT.
Maybe I’ve seen too many maritime horror movies, but I don’t feel the desire to embark on a yacht, no matter how fancy. You’re stuck hoping the owner hasn’t skimped on safety and the thing is actually seaworthy, and surrounded by rich snobs too far from shore to be in anyone’s legal jurisdiction to get justice if anything untoward happens to you.
These items are not for the average or everyday person. These are for the very very wealthy. It’s like buying a cool toy to them. This is something we “as normal people” will ever have to worry or get into.

Wait, yacht flexing is on the whole another level. Sure maybe the extra rich made an unwise financial decisions in yachts, but its not like common people like us making bad financial decisions on luxury bag or clothing. You can't prevent them buying yacht by "raising awareness", influencing, or promoting good personal finance. You need politics, policy making, and regulations to do so.
Exactly. These are toys for people that are out of the stratosphere when it comes to money. So when they spend $10-$100+ million on a yatch, it’s because it’s very inexpensive for them and barely affects their net worth.
The nice think about multimillion dollar yachts is that they employ a huge number of people to build them and then employ a bunch more people to operate them, more people to maintain them, more people to produce replacement parts, and more people to run marinas. Yachts are a huge wealth transfer from the ultra rich to the working class.
Versailles was a response to the Fronda. All top French nobility was to be housed there to be under constant surveillance and away from their domains, so no plotting would be possible. So yes it needed to be big. In fact it wasn't big enough and living conditions there were pretty poor.
My doctor employer bought a boat. One of his staff members scoffed 'the happiest days of your life are when you buy a boat, and sell it'. Well, he used it maybe a dozen times, but started complaining about how much it cost to run and insure. Oh, and don't forget wintering the boat and then paying to put it out on the water again. If you want to know how much it costs to own a boat, take the purchase price and then double it again.
Come to Poland, you can rent a small yacht for $1.5k a week. 8 people can sleep there comfortably. And if you have driver’s license you get to drive (?) it 😊
To be fair, the sailing yacht of Bezos is something as a sailor, I appreciate that exists at all. These are the vessels we will look back 150 years from now and say that they are the symbol of an era, and they are beautiful. The same was true back in the day with the huge tall ships, it was a flex on your neighboring country that you could shoot up their shoreline with them.
I'm going to be honest, being stuck in the middle of the humid and hot ocean (yeah, cause no one yachts in cold weather), far from land, on a swaying boat, near salty water that burns the eyes, where death is at every turn with almost nothing to do, doesn't really sound that appealing to me, unless you are just having drunk and drug fueled adult activities.
You want to bet they went to the local yacht yard and took photos standing next to someone else's yacht? The same flex that was going around a few years ago with private jets that turned out to be a studio anyone could rent.
If you enjoy sailing then yacht life can be quite amazing. Going from port to port to check out new islands is amazing. Mega yachts are something else but I can imagine for some, they do enjoy the ability to move from point to point while having luxury. I will concede that likely many owners are just there for the show.
My stepdad had a mini yacht. 2 bedrooms, both with queensize beds and bathrooms, I was amazed the first time he showed it to us after he upgraded from a normal motorboat. I dolove the ocean and being on water and even then I thought to myself that no one needs anything thats as big as a mega yacht. Today I would love to have a boat too, but only if it can run environmental friendly. Idk maybe a sailing boat with a solar powered electric engine?
Yachts don't depreciate as badly as you think. A refit restores value to a yacht. A lot of yacht owners will offset the costs of ownership and sometimes even profit off of owning them.
You're only looking at the largest and most expensive mega-yachts. Smaller yachts might charter for 40 to 80k per week and accommodate 8 to 12 people. So really we're talking about 5 to 10k per person per week. That's not far off from an ultra-luxury resort or a suite on a high-end cruise, except you have privacy with your friends and family, a private chef to cook whatever you want, and the ability to visit multiple islands, fjords or ports-of-call in a single trip. Plus, if it's a sailing yacht it can be environmentally friendly.
@@MegaJohnnycage Putting aside your lack of manners, I never said it was modest. I said it was comparable to a suite at a luxury resort or cruise, which plenty of people can and do enjoy with much less fanfare. This video is the equivalent of denouncing hotels by looking only at the prices of presidential suites.
@@braxhartman plenty of people have 40- 80k p/w to spend on a yacht for a week? get a grip man , you either delusional or one out of touch MF , I try not to swear to not offend you sensibilities, but you are talking crap man.
People who rent yatch always do not flex sometimes they are rich just they don't want the hassle that comes with yatch. By this standard the owners also gets money to manage the yatch. Its is similar with large mansions, planes, helicopters and yatches. There will always be people who will do fake rich flexing
I think cruising sounds like the answer to yachting. The economies of scale that can be achieved means you can probably achieve a lot of the same things for far less money if you're just willing to dial down the exclusivity.
I don’t just think, I know first hand most average people don’t care enough to take advantage of lowering their taxable income. Or tax efficient investing. Not that it’s really relevant, but it’s a pet peeve when people complain about Uber rich people not paying taxes, when the average person isn’t even maxing out their employer matched 401ks or even know what a ROTH IRA is.
As the aphorism goes: the best day is the day you buy the boat, and the second best day is the day you sell the boat. Having known enough people with boats, my goal is to be the friend of someone with a boat (and hey, I chip in and pull my weight!) and not the owner of the boat. 😂
Have you considered, that the love for the sea and sailing could have something to do with it? The wind and the waves? It may not be your cup of tea, but just like that's obviously the case, you could never make me understand, what makes people want to go to mountains or forests. What I - of course - agree with, is your take on those party boats and poser and mega yachts, those (usually motorized) monstrosities, that are so huge, that they drastically limit the range of marinas that can host you. And 24 guests? For me, the point is getting away from it all - and "it all" includes most of those 24 people. You mentioned the option of getting creative instead. But these things aren't mutually exclusive. The ocean is inspiring. It makes the imagination flow. I haven't found anything that has the same effect. And about the ecological aspect: Most of the time, there's no emission at all. Travelling in a wind-powered vehicle is the perfect use of renewable energy for transportation.
Thankfully, I‘m not into yachts, cars, planes and bling - even if I could afford them 😂 However, when it comes to luxury goods, I must admit that I have two weak spots as well - watches and fountain pens 😅 Regarding these, I generally stay within the „quality for price“ range and when it comes to watches, I benefit from the fact that yellow gold absolutely does not suit me 😂
I worked on ships (not yachts) but I've seen what sailing looks and feels like. I've seen both faces of opulence and expliotation. Ships and yachts don't give me FOMO, they disgust me.
If you have to go through so much trouble to tell a fake is a fake, then I don't understand why you would make such a fuss about buying the real thing. I would happily buy a fake kislux and have no shame in admitting it is a fake
If women or men want to take money and favors in exchange for sex that's their business. It's only trafficking when they're it's against their will. Get that bag if you want it.
Cars may appreciate but must become vintage that is scarce mainly through age & attrition over time. And they must be original equipment and “special.” Few collectors want a vintage Yugo. A original VW Beetle.
The US is a bit more lenient when it comes to the requirement of having crew on a yacht, note this is 80-90 foot+ Yachts and it's up to insurance companies most of the time. So an experienced husband, wife duo might not need a crew for a 95 foot yacht and under 80 foot almost no insurance company will require anyone to have crew
What is being advocated is either a wealth tax or unrealized gains tax. The USA has many kinds of taxes including excise taxes, motor vehicle fuels tax (“gas tax”) and income taxes. Income taxes on the sale of a primary residence can be deferred but other real estate become due on any “capital gains” (sales price (less expenses of sale) minus the cost basis (purchase price plus capital improvements plus expenses of purchase). Stocks and other equity are treated similarly - income = capital gains = sales price - cost. So, what tax fairness is treating increases in value due to an increase in stock price = income. When does one take the snapshot? December 31? Zucker’s, Musk’s, Bezo’s wealth fluctuates with the market. And their portfolio is generally concentrated in their company’s stock. It is illiquid , that is, one of these billionaires can’t go to the grocery or big box store and offer to pay for a $150 purchase with one share. (Yes they can collateralize a loan but the lender expects to be paid back eventually.) I suppose we ought to let them pay their tax in shares valued on the snapshot date. And instead of a cash tax refund or assistance check one would have a share or so added to your portfolio. Imagine if lBuffet had to pay top rate (37%,) on that $24. Billion, $8+ billion. I doubt he has $8 B in bank accounts. So, a fire sale occurs. Imagine the rest also selling large amounts. Sure sucks for your 401(k), public employee retirement system and etc. if you have a holding in any of these and need liquidity. Your answer is simple, buy tax free treasuries (sarcasm, where does the $ to pay off these bonds come from? Taxes or the Fed fueling inflation.) To treat everyone the same, shouldn’t the average homeowner have a tax due on the appreciation of their residence treated as income? What about your IRA or 401(k). Yes yachts are not money pits or sharks but remoras sucking the life out.
I'm with you on boats 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮, most mode of transport really 😮😂, but I get motion sickness on a wooden pier, no thanks. I have zero interest in boats or rich person flexing.
I have a suggestion for a Content. 😊 Gen z and some millennials using vocal fry when talking to trying to sound rich and white. I have experienced this with so someone i know and now I avoid the person because its annoying to listen to.
I don't think you did enough research on Yachts itself, because you keep mentioning it being small and cramped @8:22. You fail to make the distinction between yachts and "MEGA" yachts which is far from what you seem to be talking about here. Most mega yachts are as large, if not larger than mansions. And the reason they accommodate only a few guests (usually less than 30) is because guests have ample space to play around. Not to mention the crew which can number anywhere from 15 to as many as 40 (in a mega yacht). Another distinction you fail to make is the "explorer" class of yachts, these have very impressive range which allows them to reach remote places. "Ice" class yachts can also go to even more remote places. Most owners of these type of yachts are not flexing at all. They have genuine desire to explore the world which their wealth allows them to. Maybe a better researched and more nuanced video next time. Some of what you say is just not true.
Yacths provide a functionality that luxury handbags doesn't. I don't think these two are comparable. There are no knockoff 2 million dollar yacths that provide the same functionality that Bezos' 500 million dollar yacht.
Having a net worth of $300 billion means they can buy 1,000 yachts at $300 million. These are actual rich people and if you created enough value for others then I don’t care 🤷🏿♂️ some people find more value in yachting and others find more value in travel etc. As long as you live the life you want it’s none of my business.
for these people time is more valuable than money. the glee of being able to snap your fingers and beyonce appears like a cheap -- all it costs is $1m, is what these people like. it seems like even the most famous popstars and movie stars are so greedy they'll do just about anything for money
Really disappointing that you got fooled by that thing claiming billionaires don't pay taxes. They don't pay income tax, because they don't earn wages. They pay other types of taxes, far exceeding what people earn in their whole lives.
This is a very strange comment lol. According to what source because it sounds like you're making that up. Cost to volume isn't even a sensible way to measure food value, a head of lettuce has larger volume but less nutrients and calories than a single egg. Cost to calories or cost to nutrients would be more apt. Japanese food is super healthy and delicious, and healthy food in Japan is cheaper than the USA. How is it 'ironic' to like a cuisine. She's not overconsuming or polluting the planet to fly over takoyaki from Osaka to her yacht on a private jet, she just likes a certain country's food the most.
@@starlightsall Japan was hit pretty hard in the pandemic and shut itself out from the rest of the world. This caused massive inflation in their economy. They never saw this inflation because what happened is that from Ginza to Nagoya to Hiroshima, everyone started shrinkflating instead. Now we're in 2024 and the cost of an $18 plate of food is half of what you would have gotten in 2015. My source is my experience I've stayed in all three cities and was there during the pandemic (one of the VERY few that was let in during 2021). The idea that Japanese food is super health and delicious is not true because that's the Western notion of Japanese food. Most Japanese now (to save money) eat unhealthy noodles and meat byproducts at ramen shops. That still has a good cost value, but the majority of "culinary" dishes that Cara is talking about (like the dishes or restaurants in Ginza) are very expensive.
@@ret4kindWell based on my own experiences in Japan, I stand by my words that it is delicious food and healthier than what one gets in the USA for the same price. To say it has the worst cost to volume (or more accurately cost to nutrients and calories) ratio in the USA, we'd have to measure across all major world cuisines accessible in the USA and compare. And even if it does, it's not a consumption crime to like a famous world cuisine the most, it's not comparable to the wasteful hypercomsumption that her videos criticize.
@@starlightsall Fair enough. But I always look to criticize and never take anything at face value. While I like Cara's commentary there is an "air" of who-does-this-person actually represent because her videos are too polished to be believable. I'd never contribute to a 401k because they're a scam, so my guess is she's promoted by the Wall Street firm to promote mindfulness yet promote the broken self-managed U.S. pension system.
So disingenuous, these content creators just say these people pay less in taxes, no they do not. They get paid in RSU (stock options) which is taxed as an ordinary income.

Yeah that's not mini , that's huge how many feet 40-50 any yacht with bedrooms is enormous
Yachts don't depreciate as badly as you think. A refit restores value to a yacht. A lot of yacht owners will offset the costs of ownership and sometimes even profit off of owning them.
Thsts 0:11 when diana was alive
You're only looking at the largest and most expensive mega-yachts. Smaller yachts might charter for 40 to 80k per week and accommodate 8 to 12 people. So really we're talking about 5 to 10k per person per week. That's not far off from an ultra-luxury resort or a suite on a high-end cruise, except you have privacy with your friends and family, a private chef to cook whatever you want, and the ability to visit multiple islands, fjords or ports-of-call in a single trip. Plus, if it's a sailing yacht it can be environmentally friendly.
You fucking dreaming, nothing modest or whatever about that, no matter how you slice it
@@MegaJohnnycage Putting aside your lack of manners, I never said it was modest.
Like your videos!
Nah, if I had a spare $50 million to spend on a giant toy I’d buy a second-hand Airbus A380 😁
I think cruising sounds like the answer to yachting. The economies of scale that can be achieved means you can probably achieve a lot of the same things for far less money if you're just willing to dial down the exclusivity.
Unfortunately, the reality is that yachts are inherently cool. The fact that so few can actually afford them is what makes them cool.
Okay, not looking to get a yacht but this convinced me that cruise ships aren't worth it also🤔
Opportunity cost? So if someone has already done and already does the other things you suggested, then what is the opportunity cost?
I don’t just think, I know first hand most average people don’t care enough to take advantage of lowering their taxable income. Or tax efficient investing. Not that it’s really relevant, but it’s a pet peeve when people complain about Uber rich people not paying taxes, when the average person isn’t even maxing out their employer matched 401ks or even know what a ROTH IRA is.
Maybe in usa
@ I can’t speak for other countries, but a typical distribution would probably contradict your claim.
the "yacht girls"... i think there were rumors that skai jackson was doing that
thank you for putting the number like 53 million it’s sometimes hard for people like me how are still learning english ahah
You buy a Yacht for the crew of course, you want them to enjoy life.
The yachts look fun, the people look awful
My yacht only cost $25k. But I did splurge and buy new sails for $17k
Cars may appreciate but must become vintage that is scarce mainly through age & attrition over time. And they must be original equipment and “special.” Few collectors want a vintage Yugo. A original VW Beetle.
also hearing yacht reminds me of the proud family movie when they keep saying ya-tch
lol, it’s like when I am rich, I need to buy a yacht….
Remember folks, turn down the AC ,we need to save the planet 🥴
I'd rather just kayak down a tranquil river relaxing as I do so
Don't worry, those rich people aren't paying, the rest of us are.
One can always join the navy and get paid to yacht life.
75 mil Jet is less expensive than 35 mil yacht
maybe only in the US, in my country having a crew is not a mandatory for all sizes
Imagine thinking rate is the same as total amount....
Hard to take this seriously
I actually got to spend an afternoon on one of these monstrosities, and I can report it is hugely overrated 😂
Taxes or the Fed fueling inflation.)
To treat everyone the same, shouldn’t the average homeowner have a tax due on the appreciation of their residence treated as income? What about your IRA or 401(k).
Yes yachts are not money pits or sharks but remoras sucking the life out.
Yacht? More like NOT!
The barrel of the danaides...
Some exotic cars go up in price
These motor boats are so ugly, just glorified ferries really. Sail boats are far more classy and greener, too
I'm with you on boats 🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮🤮, most mode of transport really 😮😂, but I get motion sickness on a wooden pier, no thanks. I have zero interest in boats or rich person flexing.
I have a suggestion for a Content. 😊 Gen z and some millennials using vocal fry when talking to trying to sound rich and white. I have experienced this with so someone i know and now I avoid the person because its annoying to listen to.
I really do hate vocal fry
Getting in on the yachtion if you will. 😅
Get a prescription for a patch from your doctor.
for these people time is more valuable than money. the glee of being able to snap your fingers and beyonce appears like a cheap -- all it costs is $1m, is what these people like. it seems like even the most famous popstars and movie stars are so greedy they'll do just about anything for money
Im feeling so much fatigue from influencers pushing sponsors. I thought this was a great video until you crammed Masterclass down my throat.
Discuss total tax burden before you claim to offer a perspective on fairness.
Who cares. If they have the money to buy the yatch, why not?
First
Really disappointing that you got fooled by that thing claiming billionaires don't pay taxes. They don't pay income tax, because they don't earn wages. They pay other types of taxes, far exceeding what people earn in their whole lives.
Pretty ironic how you love Japanese food which has the worst cost to volumn value of any culinary dishes. 🤔
That still has a good cost value, but the majority of "culinary" dishes that Cara is talking about (like the dishes or restaurants in Ginza) are very expensive.
tl;dr The real Japan is one big Sukiya. (Sukiya is the McDonald's of Japan)
They get paid in RSU (stock options) which is taxed as an ordinary income.
how are you doing after yout hero Harris lost?
