You can “pinch run” for a runner at any base, but the guy who was replaced is completely removed from the game, just like if a pitcher is removed or a batter is replaced by a pinch hitter. So usually it’s something you’re only going to do late in a close game.
It also often means you’re replacing *two* players, because in this case, Heim is a catcher, the pinch runner is a fast backup outfielder, and then for the next inning you’ll need to replace that guy with your backup catcher so that you have a catcher again. So now both the original runner *and* the pinch runner are out of the game. When a team usually only has 4-5 non-pitchers on their bench, using two of them just to make one baserunner faster is a pretty big decision to make which is why you only really see it in important situations.
Also, in addition to the size of the bases, the Shift (as they did for the lefty) is no longer allowed this season.
At some levels (not the majors) they have a courtesy runner for the catcher. You can pinch hit for the catcher every time he's on base and he can come back. This is just a game speed thing, it allows the catcher to go back to the dugout to get his gear on.
The extension to this, you can have a "pinch hitter". Same substitution rules apply. Also, this can happen between any pitch but is usually at the start of an at bat. Cheers.
Joining the train of people adding to this great comment, while a pinch runner can be brought it at any occupied base, a majority of the time it’s done at 1st base, as most hitters who get to 2nd or especially 3rd are fast enough to stay on. You’re definitely more likely to see unusual substitutions later in games (especially high-stakes games) where it’s now-or-never.
Plenty of great examples, but one good one is when Dave Roberts (then playing for the Red Sox, now head coach for the Dodgers) came in to pinch run in the top of the 9th inning of a close game in 2004 that could have eliminated his team. Not always though, it depends on who's batting after. Like if the guy batting after is not as good or you feel confudent getting him out then it isn't a crazy idea to get the out at home, of course that would require not messing up the play. In this situation I do think that the right call was the double play
The score and inning also play into it. Typically, before the 7th or in a 2 run lead or more the play at the double play is the right call. You have time to get a run back, or you want the game to finish sooner if you are winning. One run game in or later than the 7th, this is when you have the infield in, trying to prevent that run and the play at the plate is important.
Yup. With a 3 run lead you make the double play and allow the run to score.
Honestly my gut reaction is that its a toss up, though I'd think that by now someone has run the numbers on this and come to a fairly objective answer. But IMO I don't think runners 1st and 2nd 1 out 3 run lead is that much worse a situation than bases empty 2 out 2 run lead.
Great pickup on that play! It should be noted that the runner on 3rd was NOT forced to run...there was no runner at 2nd therefore the runner at 3rd did not have to go to home....and since he was not "forced" the defense was required to tag him (and not simply touch home plate)...that was why the runner ran back as he knew a tag was required. That condition where a runner is caught between bases and the defense is playing catch is called a "pickle". Now that he is caught his 1st priority is to keep the defense busy while his team mates progress to their respective bases safely or (in this case) the defense screws it up.
If the bases were full, it would possible to get a Double Play...
Short to Home to First (6-2-3)..depends on how fast the ball was hit and whether there was less than one out. (Plus the throw from Home to 1st can be tricky since the runner will not be sliding).

This is the type of stuff that will make you a lifelong baseball fan. Home runs, wild catches, insane pitches are all cool highlights and fun to watch, but if you enjoy this type of stuff this is what will keep you coming back for 160+ games a year. This type of stuff gets cranked up 100% in the playoffs too, when most games are decided by only one or two runs.

One rule about baseball that I dont see people quite mention enough (like with the pinch runner)
Is once a player is subbed out of a game, he's out for good and can not come back in. Players dont rotate in and out of the game. So using your 26 players in the right spot of each game is quite important
In the second game, the ss who got the groundball should have gone for the double play.. get the 2 outs and prevent the big inning.. let the run score. You were right. Statistically speaking, it's harder for the team to come back with getting those 2 outs

In the second scenario, it’s one of the biggest no-brainers in baseball that you take the double play at the expense of giving up a run if you have the lead (and usually even if you don’t). This becomes even more important in the later innings when the starting pitcher is removed and the relief pitchers start to come into the game.
This is why I love baseball. So much more of a strategic game than any other sport. (Not saying the other sports lack strategy, but that baseball is more so.)
I don't even remember this Jomboy video but it was a great one for you guys to watch. You're right about trading the double play for the run.
The play where the shortstop threw home instead of turning the double play resulted in what’s called a Rundown, where a runner gets trapped between bases while the fielders throw back and forth till they get the tag-out. A well executed Rundown should involve as few throws as possible, as more throws means a higher chance of error (as you saw happen immediately). The runner on 3rd did exactly as he should have by initially running towards home plate, as it forced the shortstop to make that split-second decision. If he had stayed safely at 3rd (as he could have) the double play would have been a no brainer, so he was willing to give himself up to allow the other two runners to arrive safely, though obviously he ended up scoring after all.
That’s the thing I love about the game, there are all these intricacies that determine which move is the right one, depending on the number of outs (even how many balls and strikes), how many runners on which bases, the score, which inning, how fast everyone is, which hand the pitcher throws with (determining which base he has his back toward), how in control the pitcher is that day (wild pitches are dangerous with runners on), etc etc etc.
Edit: It would have been a totally different situation if there was even just one out, the double play would end the inning with no scoring. Definitely a domino effect.
Replacing a player that's on base is called "pinch running', replacing a player that was about to hit is called "pinch hitting". You can do it at any point but the substitution is permanent and the player that was removed is done for the game.

Home runs are cool and all, but what I love most about baseball is the small ball. I find it much more satisfying watching smaller hits, stolen bases, strategic plays, etc rather than home runs.

In the second game where Altuve scored, yeah the correct play was to go for the double play. Anytime you have a chance for a double play you go for it as it can stop a big inning. Usually if it's the tying run you will go to home.
or you check the runner back to third and get an out somewhere. They may not send the guy 100 percent because any fly ball to the OF is a sure run.
Love seeing how much you two have grown since beginning the baseball journey. These small ball nuance's to the game are they things that us baseball lovers really get pumped about. HR's are great and we all love them... but this breakdown starts to get to the essence of the game. Awesome reaction and great callout!
The rule with pinch hitters and pinch runners is that the replaced player is subbed out of the game and is can't come back in. You usually only see pinch hitters and runners near the end of the game for this reason. Its really common to pinch hit when a pitcher is up to bat late in the game (when you were probably already going to replace the pitcher on defense with someone out of the bullpen).
For this reason, relief pitchers rarely ever bat. Jon Bois has a good video called "the Saddest Plate Appearance of All Time" about one of the rare exceptions. He does a good job explaining the nuances of the relief pitchers batting.

You can bring in a pinch runner at any time at any base, that currently has a runner on it except for at home plate for the hitter, obviously. However, the player that gets replaced on the bases is not permitted to re-enter the game.
In Baseball substitutions can happen at almost any time. You can swap them out in the field, on the base paths (any base), right before they go to bat, and even during an at bat! Pitchers are different in that they must pitch to at least three batters, or finish their half of the inning before being substituted for another pitcher.

As others have said, you can substitute any player at any time(called "Pinching" for position players, Pinch Hitter, Pinch Runner). But once a player is in the game and replaced they cannot re-enter that game. That makes them really only happen in high impact situations.
Often a substitution causes you to cycle through 2 of your bench players, one to serve in the hitting/running role and then another substitution to get someone capable of playing the defensive position of the replaced player. If you pinch run for your catcher, you are probably doing it with a speedy middle infielder/outfielder. When that team heads back out for defense they need to do another substitution to get a catcher back into the game.
Your call for the double play was spot on.

Agreed. Two unlikely participants. The underdog San Diego Padres had eliminated the New York Mets and the Los Angeles Dodgers to get there. And, the Philadelphia Phillies (who finished 3rd in their division and was the last team to make the playoffs during the final week of regular season play, had taken care of the St. Louis Cardinals and the defending World Series champs Atlanta Braves. Padres/Phillies -- incredible game and ending.
Bryce Harper shouldn’t have even been playing because of his injury but due to the DH spot that was just implemented! Padres not having Tatis all season! It was also down pouring and the game should’ve been delayed. It wasn’t just some light right rain either… it was really coming down! The errors on the field because of the conditions… Crazy game.
One thing about baseball it can break your heart. One minute your team is one out away from going to its first world series appearance in franchise history the next minute your season is over and your wondering what the hell just happened? YEAH, I'm talking about you 1982 Angels!!!

You can substitute a pinch runner at any base. The MLB roster limit is 26 normally. 13 of those spots are pitchers so in addition to 8 position players, a DH, and a backup catcher you only have 3 spots for pinch hitters/pinch runners. And any time you substitute a player out, he cannot be substituted back in. So pinch running is only done in late innings where it's unlikely the pinch runner will come back up in the batting lineup.
Another factor in this game is that the field is artificaial turf! A ground ball on turf will tend to bounce must faster up the infield, and pressure the infielder to make a much faster and more accurate play than he'd have to on grass. On a grass field, for example, the grounder at 6:48 would very likely have been a double play.
Another interesting aspect that contributes to baseball's "domino effect," and I why I think it has the best domino effect of all major sports, is that possession doesn't change hands nor is play reset after a score (not to mention there isn't a clock). In American Football, for instance, if your team is up 28-0 in the 3rd quarter, the most damage the opponent can do with their possession is 8 points. So if the team leading 28-0 flubs a play, the "domino effect" can only lead to 8 points at the most.
In baseball, your team can be up 5-0 in the 8th with 2 outs. A player botches the easy third out. Next batter drives him in with a double. 5-1. As we know, the fielding team won't come up to bat until they make the third out. The domino effect of that error can theoretically lead to an infinite amount of runs. Obviously won't happen, but we've seen it plenty of times where a team could've easily been out of an inning in a game they had a 4-0, 5-0 lead, and next thing you know, they've given up 7 runs in the inning and now face a 3 run hole.
It's why baseball can be so tense, since that domino effect always looms.

Its as fun as any game you'll ever play. And when its you turn to bat, all eyes are on you. I remember some guys getting very nervous as their turn to bat got closer and closer. You cannot hide and you had better step in the batters box with full confidence and commitment.

There are 9 players that are currently “in the game” for each team.
You can make a sub any time, even if it’s for someone on the bases.
However, the player that comes off cannot go back in. And the player on the bases takes his place on defense, and when it’s his turn to bat again.
I'm impressed with your quickly increasing knowledge of baseball. Likely, signs from the bench would have instructed the shortstop of whether to get the double play or get the out at home. The shortstop would have given signs to the 2nd baseman - if I get the ball I'm going to you or I'm going home. Another thing a shortstop in that scenario could do is to fake the throw to second, commiting Altuve to home, then firing to the catcher for an easy tag out - if stopping the run was the decision.
There's no guaranteed out in baseball. What if the throw to second for the first out went into right field? Then 2 runs score, man on 1st and 3rd, no outs. So this is why we love baseball.
True fact: The sport of baseball sells more attendance tickets than any other sport worldwide. By far. MLB alone sells 75 Million+ seats. Then there's the minor leagues, Mexico, Korea, Japan, Taiwan, and the rest of the world. No sport sells more seats than baseball. TV viewership is another story.
Answers:
How does pinch-running (substituting a different player for a player who is currently on base) work?
Basically, any player who is not currently in the game can enter the game in place of a runner on base (pinch running) or for a player who is at bat (pinch hitting) at any time. These substitutions can also happen when the team is in the field if the manager wants to put a better defender out there. The catch is that once you have been removed from a game you cannot re-enter, and since there's only so many players on the bench, managers usually save these maneuvers for critical or late-game situations... or injuries.
Should the Rangers have taken the double play and let Altuve score from third instead of throwing home?
Yes, probably. You guys have gained a pretty good understanding of this stuff in a short time, so well done!
What was the intention with throwing home to get Altuve? Would they have been able to get a second out on the play?
They probably would not have been able to get a second out since Altuve did the right thing and went back to third when the throw went home, meaning that the defense would have to chase him down to get him out, buying time for the other runners to reach their bases safely. The reason Seager threw home was to try to prevent any runs from scoring, which might be the right play in a tie game or if you're only up 1, but it's the wrong play with a 3-run lead. In short, I agree with Jomboy on this one, and I think most baseball fans would too, though there's obviously some room for interpretation.

As to the Altuve play at home, your grasp of the possible strategies that had to be decided upon was most impressive, especially for neophytes.
I agree also with Jomboy and would have gone for the double play. But, as you realized, there is something to be said for making the play at home in particular that Houston would still have two men on base, one of whom would be in scoring position. And Houston would still have the 9th inning in which to tie or go ahead. There simply is no 100% correct answer/strategy.
In any case, the key is don’t blow the play on Altuve, you Ranger numbskulls.

hey guys love your reactions to baseball and football videos. very honored you are taking the time to learn about two sports I love and have played my whole life. I am a marlins fan, and one of the greatest moments I've ever seen (on TV, wish I was there in person ) was on September 26 , 2016. marlins vs mets first at bat of the game. the most emotional moment in sports I have ever witnessed, I really think you should watch a video on it , an absolute epic moment in baseball.

you're taught to always run towards the runner for a tag or closer throw. Basically, don't give up the "pickle" to early or that happens. The position players know to cover open bases. Typically, the 1st baseman may charge down the line to cover home while 2nd baseman covers 1st base. If the runner engages the rundown long enough, some odd position players may enter like outfielders and the pitcher again.

You are 100% correct. In that situation, go for the double play and let the run score because now there are 2 outs and the bases are empty. I have no idea why they would throw home in that situation.
There is another scenario i see all the time, and it drives me crazy - runner on first base with 1 out, and there's a base hit to right field. The runner goes from first to third, the right fielder gets the ball and makes the long throw to third base. They might record the out at third once or twice out of 10 attempts, but when you throw to third, this allows the batter to get to second base. Now you have 2 runners in scoring position with 1 out and no chance for an inning ending double play, and a base hit would scores 2 runs. It's best to allow the runner to take third base. The right fielder should just throw the ball to second base to hold the batter at first base. Now you only have 1 runner in scoring position, and the double play is in order. A base hit would only score 1 run rather than 2, but a ground ball gets you out of the inning. I once watched a team allow 6 runs in a game because they kept making that throw to third.
The nuances and tactics make playoff baseball exciting in a way the regular season can’t match
this is really a great video for people who don't know much about baseball to watch!!! jomboy explains it as if the viewer has zero knowledge of baseball, which is as he says, very nuanced and little details really matter. people who don't know those nuances are more likely not to like the game....when you substitute a runner it is called a "pinch runner" which is to put fast people on the bases so they can steal bases or put on a special play called a "hit and run". (you call it a "pinch hitter" when you substitute one batter for another, usually to put a stronger hitter in the game)..the reason they bring the infield in is because they want to have a chance at throwing a runner at third out at home plate to prevent a run. as you can see, it is a risky play because it is easier to get a hit when the infield is in.
In baseball just like basketball and football, you rarely see the team totally change their strategy. What the manager should have said was "hey man they recognize your tell..."change it up a little."
The shortstop should have gone for the double play. Two outs were much more important than the one run scored, especially in the 8th inning.
Since the ball was hit sharply, the DP is routine so I prefer going for the DP, because by getting 2 outs the chances of a 'big inning' are much less. And if you get the run down the runner previously on first is going to end up on third almost for sure, so your best case is runners on 2nd and 3rd or 1st and 3rd with one out. One single scores two runs and its a tie. And in the real game they botched the rundown so they had that with NO outs and a run in. Usually the "percentage play" wins more games overall. I remember a baseball researcher noting that a lot of early WS games pivoted on teams trying to get the lead runner on a sacrifice bunt and making a bad throw and giving up a big inning. Sac bunts reduce the chance of a big inning (giving up an out) but get a runner in scoring position so increase the chance for 1 run to add to small lead or chip away when trailing.
Yes removing a base runner for another one is called using a pinch runner, but the player they pull out can no longer play that day. His replacement has to come out for the bottom half of the inning at least before being relieved.
Definitely trade one run for 2 outs, especially that late in the game. Your instincts were correct. Love the channel!

You can't switch the player who is on base... but you can make a substitution like in soccer. Once the guy comes out of the game, he's out for good. But what happens is, late in the game a fast runner might be more important to have on base than your slow catcher. So substitute him out for a fast guy, then when it's your turn to be on defense again, substitute the fast guy for your back-up catcher. You essentially just substituted a guy to run in a crucial moment in the game, and the back-up catcher can hopefully handle catching for one inning.
Another great video guys. Also saw you took down the names I gave ya for review in the NFL. Happy to give ya any more down the road and explain any other things ya may have confusion with. The nuances involved in American Football is staggering. Most NFL fans don't even understand some of the more advanced intricacies within the game itself. Also why some players are simply head and shoulders above others without the need of pure and dominating athletic abilities, although they still obviously posses some degree of great athleticism to even play in the NFL.

The runner on first base was replaced by what is called a 'pinch runner'.
A manager can decide to pinch run for anyone on any base at any time.. However, when someone has been replaced by a pinch runner they can not return back to play in the game anymore.

The substitution rule in baseball is pretty simple. A team can put in one player for another any time the ball is dead, but the player who is removed can't play again in that game.
Damo, you're 100% right in my opinion. Especially when you're up 3-0 in the 8th inning, you get the two outs and let the run score every time. Then you'd have 2 outs, bases empty, still with a 2-run lead. Instead he tried to make the far less certain play at home, it goes wrong, and then Astros have 1 run scored, no outs, 2 more runners in scoring position, and a good chance to make it a big-scoring inning (which indeed they did). The only time I can think of when you'd definitely try to get the runner going home is if it's the 9th inning or extra innings, the score is tied, and if that run scores you'd lose the game 1-0.

Being up by two runs you always concede the run and take the two outs this gives the pitcher more options he doesn't necessarily have to throw strikes to get the last out
This kind of stuff is really the reason for a lot of the rule changes. By limiting pick off throws, restricting shifting, and increasing the size of the bases, they're trying to bring back small ball because it's just visually more interesting. Yes, people love seeing the long ball, but the game had degenerated into a sort of home run derby and it was becoming repetitive. Every pitcher was a power pitcher, every hitter was a power hitter. I'm hoping the league implements some kind of minimum fencing as well for stadiums going forward. I think the stadiums need to get bigger.
From what I've seen so far, it's working. The pitch clock helps a lot too. Steals are coming back, it's less station-to-station baseball. Just a lot more fun.
I just wish my favorite player, Byron Buxton, would start USING his speed on the basepaths a little bit.
You generally only see pinch runners and hitters in the last innings because the guy you replace can't play anymore that night.
Honestly for a couple guys who only recently started watching and learning baseball, yall are diving deeper and developing an in depth understanding of the game that people who have been fans for years dont even have.

That situation in the second game you 100% absolutely take the double play and sacrafice the run. Youre up 3-0 so you have runs to trade. My old coach use to always say you have to think of bade runners as potential runs. Cause thats what they are. You take the double play you remove 2 potential runs from tbe board. Even if you get the runner there you still have 2 potential runs on the board with only 1 out.
The other part of the calculus for why taking the 6-4-3 double play is the smart move is knowing where the other team is in the batting order -- and here we're in the deadly middle section of a very potent Astros batting order. So let's say the Rangers execute the rundown on Altuve perfectly well, and tag him out.
Great. You've still at minimum got two men on base, 1 out in the inning. But now you're facing the incredibly potent bats of Yordan Alvarez and Kyle Tucker coming up, each representing the tying run. If you turn the double play, those guys may be batting with no one on base, trailing by two.
To be fair you'd probably walk the first one of those to put the DP back in play....so you'd be up 3 with the bases loaded best case. If your pitcher's control is iffy, you might walk someone in.
Damo, what you said makes sense, the player should have gone for the double play (allowing a run but getting 2 of the 3 outs to leave the inning with the lead intact), but in an attempt to “have it all” and prevent a run, threw it home. The catcher has to tag the player, because the player is permitted to run back, so it’s extremely unlikely that any play to first for a second out could be expected or made. In essence the player chose 1 out no run scored over 2 outs (maybe, a fast batter can beat out a double play but in that situation he’d have to be really fast) with a run scored. The assumption would always be that trying to get the runner out at home is the only out you’ll be getting (unless the bases are loaded, in which case no tag is required, as the runner cannot run back to first and therefore would be out upon the catcher touching home, not the case in this instance)

You can pretty much substitute in baseball for any position between 2 pitches. In the case of the catcher getting on late in games, teams pay use a faster pinch runner and then put the backup catcher in for defense
That was really some old time baseball. "Manufacturing runs"... Also called "small ball". The game today tends to be more home run/extra base hit or strikeout as the math proved out that over the long run it's worth it to lean that way. I think most people find an older style of game with lots of different outcomes more exciting.
You showed a natural baseball instinct on that potential double play that turned into a botched rundown. It's the eighth inning. You give up a run because at this point in the game I think you are trying to get outs. Getting outs ends the game. I honestly believe most MLB managers want the outs in that situation.
Yes, at any time the batter or baserunner can be substituted, but he then is out of the game entirely and the substitute replaces him in the batting lineup as well
Like in football (soccer), substitutions in baseball are permanent for the duration of the game, unlike American football, ice hockey and basketball
I’m from Venezuela and started going to the games of our winter league since I was 3. I know baseball has changed with all the analytics, but I take that double play 10 out of 10 times. It would be 2 outs and no runners on base, it’s that simple
Just a tiny bit of info... You were pondering if they may have been trying for a double play by throwing home to prevent the run and then potentially to 1st base to get the hitter. While this is technically possible it's highly unlikely because, since the bases were not loaded, the runner from 3rd must be tagged out. It's not a force out, hence why the guy tried going back to 3rd. So it's almost impossible in that situation to throw home, tag the runner, then throw to 1st for a double play. They were simply looking to prevent the run.
Now you guys are actually talking baseball strategy when you debate the double play verses stopping the run. This is the strategy of it all... when to bunt when to steal when to take your double play and give up a run, pitch to a certain batter or walk him to set up a double play… the list goes on.
yes the Double Play made more sense in that situation then trying to get Altuve out at the plate. At the time the score was 3-0 with no one out in the 8th. If they got the Double Play it would have been 3-1 with two outs and no one on base, instead they attempt to get Altuve out, and give up an error allowing him to score, and the runners to advance to third and second, so now you have a score line of 3-1 with noone out, tying run on second, and the guy coming up has Home Run power. If they just went for the Double play, they would only have had 4 outs left, (one to end the eighth, and 3 in the ninth to end the game, sine Rangers are hosting, Bottom of the Ninth isn't played as long as they keep the lead) instead they essentially threw away the game, or forced themselves into a Walk-off scenario.

My only issue with Jomboy's analysis came in game one, right after the pinch runner stole second. He says the ground-out to first might have been a double play without the steal, but if the runner was still on first, the first baseman would have been standing on first, holding the runner on, and that grounder probably would have gone through for a hit, so they would likely have had the same outcome, assuming the runner went from first to third on the single. Or not.
Also, a new rule as of this season is that the infield is no longer allowed to shift for lefty batters.

it looks like the only plan really, was to tag Altuve out trying to score. If this is done quickly then you have a chance at the runner approaching 2nd base.
Only if it's quick though, because if it isn't and Altuve is running around, buying time (he has to be tagged here), then the runners at 2nd and 1st are just safe.

You can swap out any runner on any base, it's called a pinch runner. Like using a pinch hitter, that means the guy you took out is completely out of the ballgame. As far as the new rules this season, one other thing is that the shift is no longer allowed and had Houston not been using the shift, the hit the Rangers got would have instead gone straight to the shortstop and been an out. They actually screwed themselves using the shift.

Small ball is all about advancing the runner to scoring position. You take walks and you bunt. Move the lead runner to 3rd base where he is 90ft from a run. The slow dribble hits that you can't turn a double play on because they just take too long to get to the defenders.
You can put in a substitute runner ("pinch runner") at any base, but the player you take out can't return to the game later. Same with substitute "pinch" hitters, pitching changes, and defensive substitutes.

Regarding the play around 12:00: the reason you might not try for the double play is it's not guaranteed you get both outs, even with a good throw, if the batter is fast. In which case you've just allowed the run for no reason. Getting the runner out at home should have been a sure thing, and you can't fault the shortstop for not anticipating that mix-up. That said, this late in the game with that size lead, the outs are probably more important than the run.
Baseball was definitely too slow prior to the addition of the pitch clock this year, and I say that as a long time baseball fan. Games starting at 19:00 local would run past 23:00 without delays or extra innings. Kids aren't going to be allowed to stay up that late and I think it was killing off youth interest in the game.
