Ted Williams also almost missed the entirety of the '52 & '53 seasons due to the Korean War. Such a legend.
He also missed 3 years do too WWII!!! And he broke his elbow half way into his career. I feel his ability of a hitter was unmatched.
I cross referenced that he did lose the entirety of 52 and 53, they don't count 52 he was 6 games 53 37. That's why most people reference him losing 5 seasons not 3.
Ted won 2 Triple Crowns (1942,1947) yet didn't win the MVP either time. Just missed winning a third in 1949, won the MVP. Go figure.
Although I would not put Ted Williams in my top 5, he really missed 5 seasons to military service. Even 25 HR times 5 seasons would have easily put him over 600 HR.
@@PFB1994 I put him as number 1. It wasn't just 5 yrs it was 5 prime years. He was the last to hit .406. He could have easily hit .400 again if not once but twice more. It doesn't count but he did in his two shorten seasons hit.400. So average lifetime would have been higher. He would have easily equaled every number Ruth hit and more.
Fun fact: Stan Musial has the same number of hits at home and on the road - 1815 each. The definition of pure consistency.
And his career batting average at day and night (or is it home and away?) are exactly the same too.
He almost has the same rs 1949 and rbi 1951

I had the honor of meeting Mr. Robinson just a few years before he had passed. My high school baseball team's gear had been stolen. Frank had heard about it in the news and came to our field to donate what had to have been thousands of dollars worth of equipment. I'll never forget that day and how privileged I was to meet him.

Speaking of high school teams, Frank was part of what was easily the greatest high school outfield ever. In the early 1950s at McClymonds high school in Oakland, CA Frank shared the outfield with Curt Flood and Vada Pinson. All got drafted by Cincinnati, all became All Stars. No other high school outfield is even remotely close to this.
I'm surprised Nolan Ryan did not make this list. Literally the strikeout king with 5714. Only pitcher to pitch 7 no hitters. He is an 8 time all star. Sure he found his stride later in his career but still.

Non of those things you mentioned about Ryan determine how good a player is. Nolan Ryan is absolutely not a top 25 player he’s probably in that 60s range. He had 83 war in 27 years and had a career 112 ERA+ he was really great but he’s easily the most overrated player of all time.

Couple things you didn’t mention about Albert that may be most impressive. He never struck out more than 100 times in a season, and he finished his career with more xbh than k’s. Prime Pujols is a top 2 or 3 hitter all time.
Prime Albert is top 25 but he was a big disappointment in Anaheim. None of the others had such issues. I am a big Albert fan but not in the top 10 if you look at the whole picture.

I could run faster than him and look better doing it. Helped the Angels get into the World Series zero times. I luv Albert but he is not top 10.
@@outofcompliance1639 His first 10 years were the best ten years of nearly any hitter. If he retired then he would be on this list as well. I don't think you should punish him for playing longer. Obviously he got injured and something happened to his eye, but its the same thing with Griffey.

Great video! I would have included Lefty Grove somewhere on the list. In 17 seasons he led in E.R.A. 9 times and K's 7 times. Although I love Mel Ott, Tris Speaker was better. Tris was the Willie Mays of his time. He had 3,514 hits, a record 792 doubles, 222 triples, 436 steals, .345 AVG, .427 OBP, .500 SLG, 3 titles. He had 449 outfield assists. Cobb is a distant second with 392. The problem with Ott (and I love Mel Ott) are his splits. He hit 323 of his 511 homers at home. Against the Phillies at Shibe Park he hit .415 in 119 games with 40 HR and 162 RBI. His OBP was .508 and slugged .774. When the Phils moved to the Baker Bowl he hit .220 in 71 games with 0 HR and 33 RBI. His OBP was .330 and he slugged .272. A 1.282 OPS compared to .602.
How do you leave out Cy Young? Most wins, most innings pitched, and most complete games in history. And those records will never fall! Plus the best pitcher award is named after him. A case for him being the greatest pitcher ever could be made and ... where is he?!

Cy young’s number don’t translate like they do today. K/9 under 4. Never got to 3000 despite pitching 7000 innings. He’s just hard to rank. If you were to take one guy from this old school era it’s clearly Walter johnson

Where are Eddie Collins, Chuck Klein (1929-1933 short career), Ralph Kiner (8 Home Run Titles), Albert Belle (1991-2000), Frank Thomas (1991-2000), Jeter Wagner TSpeaker JFoxx HGreenberg JMize, etc et al. 3) Steroid tainted players: Pujols Bonds Clemens ARoid Bagwell Helton McGwire Sosa Palmeiro IvanRod Piazza Canseco MRamirez DOrtiz Sheffield JuanGon Giambi Pettitte RBraun MoVaughn Gagne Caminiti BretBoone, etc et al. List the greatest of all those who's stats improved after age 30 and into their 40s. Make a revised list of historic baseball records WITHOUT those involved with steroids. Steroids ruined baseball's greatest passion: stats leaders MVPs records ~ too bad. The Steroid tainted players ruined my love for baseball, and many other fans of the game. Babe Ruth has to be number 1 for the simple fact that he was well on his way to being one of the 5 greatest pitchers who ever lived before deciding to hit full time. His 6th season in 1919 was the first time he played in over 100 games and his 5th season in 1918 was the first season he had over 200 plate appearances. Imagine 5 more seasons of numbers he could have put up. Probably would have 800 HR.

I’m honestly tired of The Babe at #1. It’s been long enough to see the game develop into something greater than it used to be. The top three belong to Mays and Bonds and Griffie. Not some legend people can’t fathom. That’s what Babe Ruth is the best as. #4 where we can just imagine. And I think that’s fine

Yeah he had 7 no hitters and pitched for like 30 years but statistically he isn’t even close to a top 25 player all time, maybe top 75

Outstanding list. 👍👍So happy you included Bob Gibson. Well deserved. More on Rogers Hornsby. Averaged over .400 for 5 straight years. Didn’t hit over .400 each year, but the average of the 5 years is over .400. The Rajah. A little bit more on Albert. Never struck out more than 93 times. Only player with over 700 HRs and over 600 doubles at 686. Rocky being Ricky pure joy to watch. Best leadoff hitter. Ever. No one comes close.
Its a shame injuries and his notoriously difficult to get along with personality limited his playing time so much for his last 7 seasons or so.
Nolan Ryan and Sandy Koufax deserve to be in a top 25 before bob gibson.

Pretty good list, my only gripe is that Rickey henderson should be higher. He is THE ultimate run generator. The leadoff hitter or all leadoff hitters. His combination of discipline, hitting and speed on the basepaths was something that I don’t think we will ever see again. We are more likely to see another 600-700 hr player then we will seeing a 1400+ sb, 2200+ bb, almost 2300 run player. That alone should make him a top 10-15 player. It’s a minor gripe, but Rickey def deserves more love when it comes to talking baseball

Solid list. 2 takeaways here. Griffey and Trout are insanely similar. If Griffey didn’t get hurt so much he’s likely the home run king and arguably the best ever. If trout didn’t get hurt so much he’d be projecting even more godly than he already is.
And the second thing is it’s crazy that those late 90s mariners teams had 3 all time top 15 players. What that team could have and should have been 🤯
Griffey, A-Rod, Randy Johnson, Edgar Martinez, and a collection of other good players but nothing to show for it.
For real, they had 40+ home run hitter Jay buhner and they had hall of famer Edgar Martinez and squandered it.

I think Trout is closer to Mantle than Griffey is to Trout.
@@jablejosh7335 I was mostly talking from a career trajectory. Griffey missed essentially 3+ seasons due to injury. Projecting those games missed out he’s likely the home run king and has 3k hits and in the conversation as best ever not just top 10.
Trout has already missed about 2 seasons due to injury. When it’s all said and done those 2 years can add up to a lot of extra stats. That’s all I’m really comparing

Not bad. Biggest omit in my eyes is Honus Wagner. Other tough omits would be Jimmie Foxx (rated 2nd in HRs until 1966) & Nolan Ryan. I think Foxx was quite a bit better than Ott. Good list though. Glad to see someone give kudos to Bonds. I know it’s off the table, but Sadaharu Oh.
I like this ranking. But I would had Nolan Ryan. Yes, his win column doesn't support it, but take into mind that he played on mostly losing teams. There was a period of a month with the Astros where he only gave up 4 or 5 run in a 4 game span, and still lost or no decision in those games cause the Astros couldn't score more than 2 runs. His 7th no hitter, he didn't know if he would be able to pitch cause of his elbow, but he warmed up and he went back to the dugout and told his team 'all I need is 1 run tonight boys.'
Think ima echo what some others said…Kershaw should be on here. He’s essentially been *similiar* to Trout on the pitching side of this generation.
Before I watch, I just gotta say this, Ricky Henderson is a top 20 player of all time! Fastest player in the history of baseball, stolen base king, arguably the best leadofff hitter, and numerous other accolades.

Good video Marc, this is an unwinnable task in terms of making everyone happy with your list. And though I disagree on a lot of placements (including that #1 spot lol) I have to commend you for what I believe to have been a well balanced and researched list. Most importantly you did a good job of conveying some important historical baseball players to an audience who may never have heard of Hornsby, Walter Johnson, or Mel Ott before. Shoutouts to Eddie Collins, Bob Feller, and Lefty Grove before I’m out.

Hard list to make. I made one in 10 min before watching without looking anything up and somehow forgot Ted Williams, Griffey, Hornsby, and Henderson. A couple I think deserved it: Greg Maddux won 15+ games every year from 1988-2004 and was uniquely gifted. Honus Wagner was amazing, not just the baseball card guy. Koufax? Josh Gibson and also I think Walter Johnson is the best pitcher and top 5. 110 shutouts! Anyway, thanks!
Josh Gibson was probably a top 25 baseball player of all time, but he never played in MLB.
Nice list. I would've liked to see Pete Rose and Ichiro make it with all those career hits (and Ichiro's defense). Also, I was a bit surprised Rivera didn't make it for being the best closer ever.
Rivera is definitely one of the most skilled pitchers ever, but his value as a reliever just doesn't allow him to be considered a top 25 player bc his impact was limited only pitching 1-2 innings out of the pen as opposed to some of these starters who went 8-9 innings. I feel like Nolan Ryan should have made the list

If this guy took his top 25 players and made that into a MLB roster, as great as they are, they wouldn't win many games.
All those great pitchers - Pedro, Seaver, both Johnsons, etc. - throwing unhittable pitches...that would all go to the backstop. Even all the batters striking out would reach base. There would be an endless parade of base runners circling around to score.
All because he doesn't have a catcher.

DiMaggio is underrated, easily top 10. Overshadowed by the bigger media of the 50s and 60s and Baby Boomer fans that love Mantle and Mays. DiMaggio was a stellar defensive outfielder and had a cannon for a throwing arm before a shoulder injury about halfway through his career. He averaged about 1 HR per strikeout. (361 HR vs 369 SO) while missing some prime years in the military. Dimaggio hit 8 World Series HR - none at Yankee stadium, because it was so skewed for left-handed batters.
Roberto Clemente or Greg Maddux? I know this is a hard list to compile. However, these two should have made the list. Otherwise, I love how you honored the older players. Great job, Marc!
Yeah biased list that Seaver is there and not Maddux. I actually get the case for peak Randy or Pedro but Maddux with all those GG and 15+ win seasons are both probably impossible records to touch.

Seeing Ichiro left off the list and multiple steroid users on the list in my opinion is insulting. Ichiro was the best contact hitter of all time, one of the best base runners of all time, and an absolutely elite Right Fielder.

I always find it tough to argue against Babe Ruth as the greatest baseball player of all time. Offensively, he was up there with anybody who's played the game, AND he was an elite pitcher in his time as well. There's nobody in baseball that could match that. The only argument against him is the time in which he played, which doesn't satisfy me. We judge everybody else by the time in which they played. Why nitpick Ruth while giving players in the steroid era a pass?

I love this list. I would rate Ruth over Bonds, however Bonds in his prime was absolutely insane.

I think he is the second best for both offense and defense for catchers (behind Piazza and Molina respectively), but both Piazza and Molina were significantly worse than Bench in the opposite side of the ball that he clears them both easily.

It's so difficult ... It's more like who you would want in a particular era... I do have a couple of names.. I mean Bob Gibson is a guy I would start Game 1 of the World Series with in any era, Sandy Koufax as well... Bring in Nolan Ryan or J.R Richard in the 4th inning... Use your imagination, lol... It's so fun and subjective ... And who knows considering baseball is so old - I mean the HOF was only established in what, like the 40's and even then - they had their old timers they have never seen and only heard about... At least I can see Ryan, Richard or Gibson pitch, but other players - guys like Ruth for instance - not many people are alive today that can tell you how great he was, at least for his era or to his competition... So yea, anyone's guess is as good as mine.. I mean I have done this with other sports and it's the same... In the end it comes down to chemistry and we have no way to measure that or the "what if's"?...lol

Ryan was great but not better than any of the pitchers listed here. Just look at his stats, walked a ton of guys, gave up a ton of hits, wild pitches like crazy, no Cy Youngs...he was good but not top 25 good.
Nolan Ryan was by far the greatest power pitcher of all time nobody will beat his so re ord no hitters and he's average you say oh my God unsubsidized now

Tom Seaver is so underrated. His winning percentage is over 100 points over his team's winning percentage - the highest in MLB history. Don't apologize because you are a Met fan. He deserves the recognition.
I know it's impossible to narrow these things down to 25 guys, but if this is my list I'm making room for Steve Carlton. Talk about criminally underrated 😅 For a big chunk of my childhood, Lefty was 2nd all-time in Ks behind Nolan Ryan. Not to mention 3 Cy Youngs, 10 All Star nods, a World Series ring and of course a HOF plaque. Steve Carlton, my favorite left handed pitcher ever on my beloved Phillies 😁👍
Narrow down the list by not putting pitchers in give them their own top 25 list pitchers though valuable. Don't have the stats to be considered best players
I think Nolan Ryan should be on that list. He didn't play on all the great teams which make some of his win/loss numbers look bad, but I think he is likely one of the greatest pitchers to ever play the game. Still a good list.

How could someone with 7 no hitters and the all-time strikeout king that no one will catch, not be on this list. When he first came into the league he didn't know where the ball was going, but once Tom House coached him he put it all together.
For me The Ryan Express was the most amazing “offensive” pitcher the game has ever seen with his strikeouts and complete and perfect games but his “defensive “ stats bring him down. He gave up too many homers and way too many grand slams, lots of losses and walked way too many batters. Still, as a young kid, I never saw a more dominant physical pitcher and the fact he could still throw a fastball over 100 in the 8th and 9th inning of several games is a testament to his raw physical presence.

Cease was 3rd In MLB with a 2.20 ERA, Manoah was 4th with 2.24. And Manoah had a 2.33 BB/9 AND ONLY 8.24 K9. Cole was 6th in IP n had a 3.50 ERA in a down year. Manoah was not only 4th in era but 9th in IP, Cease was 19th. Cease was 2nd to Alcantrera in pitcher bWar, Manoah 5th U smoking crack or just not understand baseball??

I saw Bonds in the early 90's in person, and I agree. What most people don't know or realize is that in the 80's Leyland made the mistake of not moving Bonds down in the order. So Bonds basically was a lead off hitter for four straight seasons. So I'll give his rookie season a pass, but check out his 87 through 89 seasons. Bonds went 3 straight seasons of having 59 rbis, 58, 58. He lead leadoff hitters in home runs those seasons. So if Leyland (Great Manager by the way) had moved Bonds down in the order in between Van Slyke and Bonilla, say like 4th then he would have had 90 to 100 rbis for three straight seasons. So among position players, Bonds finished 8th in WAR, 7th in WAR and then 3rd in WAR in the last three seasons of the 1980's. Had he been moved down to drive in runs his numbers would have been even better. (For instance, in 1987 Bonds hit 25 home runs, but he also hit 25 home runs in 1991, but he had 116 RBIs and should have won the MVP award, but in batting leadoff he can only get half of those runs batted in). Now when Leyland did move him down, Bonds batted in the 5th position and won MVP and they started winning divisions. He lead in WAR among position players in the NL 7 times in the 1990's. Consider the 4 lead off years and games taken away from the 94/95 strike, and his numbers would even have been crazier.
An amazing thing about Clemens, Bonds and McGwire is that they all played college ball being All Americans at USC, Texas and Arizona State in the golden area of college baseball (80's). He also faced specialty relief pitching that Ruth, Aaron and Mays didn't have to deal with at the end of games. Also up until 1930 ground rule doubles were counted as home runs.

Even as the singles hitter he was he probably is not even a top 10 singles hitter.. Just of the top pf my head I would say Carew, Gwynn, Boggs and Ichiro where all better than Rose.

@Richard James except the vast majority of his competition was doing it too. Roids or not what bonds did in those years was astounding. Dude would get maybe 3 pitches a game to actually put a swing on. To put up those numbers while getting that treatment is unreal. That 01 season was pure domination from him. For a game that favors the defensive team Barry was the exception to that. The defense feared him and treated him as such.
