    Another point to make in regards to naming conventions for files, some casting directors will just delete your audition if it doesn't match what they requested. No listening to it or giving the benefit of the doubt. You're a saint for sitting through every audition no matter what Tim!

    • @FunnyGuyTimmy
      @FunnyGuyTimmy  2 роки тому +1

      Yeah, there are a lot in the industry that will absolutely skip your audition if it's the wrong format.

    Tim has hit on every one of my pet peeves! Not being able to follow the directions in the creation of your audition files, from the file naming conventions to file format and delivery, then they know you are not directable! Many clients will want to direct your recording session. Others need to be able to trust that you will deliver what they ask for. They usually don't have the time to hold your hand.

    It's a good thing I watched this. I completely forgot that I was rendering in 44,100 hz at 16bit for Unreal.
    Forgot to switch it back to 48,00hz 24bit

    Bitchy? Not at all! I think you were very respectful and all you have asked for is super reasonable. In fact it seems like Voice Acting 101!
    I’ve been avoiding auditioning the past year as I keep working on my skills and making sure my home set up etc is as professional as It can be (within budget) before putting myself out there. And let’s face it the last few years personal and just the world with covid lockdowns etc and floods (at least where I am - life’s been crazy yo!)
    Love the vids and advice you give! Having been on the stage directing side of things at various times id have been going bonkers with having so many people not following simple instructions…. Hopefully I won’t be a hypocrite in the future!
    Good luck with casting your project! :)

    I stumbled upon this looking for some input on using my CAD u37. And I have to tell you, if I had seen this 30-40 years ago (when I was in my 30s and 40s LOL) I might have been inspired to follow up on voice work. You really spent some great time in explaining thoughtfully and efficiently, what goes on regarding auditions. (I was a creative director in a past life for ad agencies, and it was way before people were able to work remotely in their homes with sound proof rooms. :-) But, I did do some work with some folks in 2008 and I was blown away and realized this was the wave of the future. Great info (and I'm not even the biz... ). Congrats. PS Hope you got your house and things moved along positively.

    Thanks for the advice, Tim. I am learning to do this, and welcome the tips. A couple questions:1) Do we always put our name in the file name of the audition? 2) What is the minimum amount of processing to do to your audition? At this point when processing, I (using Audacity) put noise reduction, compression and normalization and de-ess and de-click the file, (usually in that order). Is that too much, or too little, or just enough? 3)Is there an order to the treatments that should done to the file?

    • @FunnyGuyTimmy
      @FunnyGuyTimmy  2 роки тому +3

      1. Not if they ask you not to. Some audition posts will have specific directions for file naming and if they don't want your name, don't put it. But if they don't specify, I would say "CharacterName_YourName" is the best way to go for most things.
      2. Well you can do a number of things, the key is to not use too much of those things. This means, if you are going to use compression, de-esser, de-click, etc... make sure it's not too much. Your goal is to have the recording space and setup to not have to do anything to the audio anyway. But if you don't know if what your doing is too much, or not positive you are editing it correctly, I would say it's best to not do any post-processing at all.

    I don't currently have a space that I can turn into a studio, and I do all my recording in my bedroom, which is fairly large. Is it still possible to get a good sound in those conditions with something like a PVC booth?

    • @FunnyGuyTimmy
      @FunnyGuyTimmy  2 роки тому

      Yes, a PVC booth would be totally fine. You will want to treat the room itself a little bit due to some of the room still bleeding in through the sound blankets but other than that, it's totally doable.

    • @Alaran
      @Alaran 2 роки тому

      @@FunnyGuyTimmy Thanks for clearing that up. I've been pretty worried that my current setup isn't good enough, so it's nice to know that I can still do good work even with my current space.

    Now that I have watched the whole video, I have a question. If the audition doesn't say one way or the other, what are your thoughts on slating and what is a good format?

    • @FunnyGuyTimmy
      @FunnyGuyTimmy  2 роки тому +1

      Generally speaking, if you are not asked to slate there is no need to as long as you put the character name and your name in the file name. Also, for auditions the format is usually MP3 at 48kHz. Some people ask for WAV but most of the time it’s MP3.

      @mageprostudios4334 2 роки тому

      @@Voyager_AU Most will say something about slating. If they request 2-3 takes, you don't even need to slate how many takes except some will really want to to state which take it is, but you don't find out until after you've gotten the gig and you ask.

    Do you put up auditions on Casting Call? Ive only been training in VO seriously for a few months now but I would love to submit an audition to one of your projects just to have you review it.

    • @FunnyGuyTimmy

      I don’t post open auditions that often but when I do it’s normally all over the place. I post it on CastingCall, my UA-cam community page, Twitter as well as Facebook. If you follow me on all of those, you will have plenty of opportunity to see when I am hosting the next audition.

    hey, can I ask what do you mean by format?

    • @FunnyGuyTimmy
      @FunnyGuyTimmy  4 місяці тому +1

      By format it’s usually referring to file type like MP3 or WAV, and often 48kHz at 24-Bit. This is often the quality of the recording and then the rendering. Most programs you can change the format when you export. But sometimes you will need to change the Hz and the but rate in the program settings before hitting record.

    Just curious I have done editing my voice over audio in audacity before and I was thinking that is it alright to get rid of noise and echo in your audio? Because I was using a compressor, graphic eq, noise reductions, noise gate and normalize by editing my audio.

    • @FunnyGuyTimmy
      @FunnyGuyTimmy  2 роки тому +1

      It depends on how much and that is hard to say unless I see and hear what you have done. I will say however, that if you have echo in you background you can’t get rid of that in editing and shouldn’t try. You need to deal with that physically and improve your recording space.
