THE kind of academic research and understanding you would expect from world class institute and scholar. This sadly doesn't happen very often today.

Excellent explanation of this topic. I studied cognitive science and read the wired article about Friston and needed to hear more from him.

My own personal theory, having experienced drug-free sleep deprivation as well as methamphetamine induced psychosis/paranoia/delusions very much so within the bounds of schizophrenia, is that schizophrenia is a situation where there's a blurring of the line between wakeful state and dream/sleep state.

Do you think this blurring of the line between wakeful and dreams state could be induced in the lab?

    • @CharlesVanNoland
      @CharlesVanNoland 3 роки тому +8

@@moabd6013 There are a class of drugs known as anticholinergics which induce the dream-like state while being awake. Diphenhydramine (Benadryl/Dramamine) while an antihistamine also functions as an anticholinergic at higher doses. The situation there is that the taxing and tiring of the dopamine receptors is not there, which is the case with both sleep deprivation and methamphetamine induced psychosis/paranoia/delusions/hallucinations. While anticholinergics can induce the dream-like state it would need to be prolonged to achieve schizophrenia-like thoughts and behavior. Methamphetamine saturates dopamine receptors to where nuance and resolution becomes lost, and its effects are lasting. Over time they accumulate and the thought patterns formed tend toward fear and then threat-solving, "figuring out" the who/what/when/where/why of perceived threats. For schizophrenia and meth-induced psychosis it would be hard to replicate in a healthy brain without permanently altering that brain, or at least altering it to a degree that lasts for a lengthy amount of time (months to years). I'm not an expert, I just know what I have experienced and what I understand about brains (which is unusually beyond what most understand about them). These unusual states of the brain are its failing and malfunctioning and inducing it in a lab scenario would be sacrificial. I don't think it's possible to temporarily induce it because it's most prominent features are manifestations of the chronic misfiring and lasting rewiring that leads to it.

TANGENTIAL STORM WARNING:(Thanks for the inspiration....perhaps I can return the favor).
You need to develop a "self" in order to operate in time. If every time you turn on your walkie-talkie the gain is stuck at ear-piercing and then you get yelled at for making too much noise........
"Off" is the only station playing what sounds like music to your ears.
What if "Off" is the only thing you feel you can choose, that no one can argue with?
If one feels they have already lost it all,
it's child's play to lose what is left of themselves like a dance-off listening to their favorite station.
Radio "Off" with the volume cranked.
Doing the limbo in the deafening silence rather than feeling: hurt, confused, or abandoned.
Love can bring you out of Limbo
....but what if it's the things and people you loved who tore you apart and put you there to begin with.
The disconnection with things like "schizophrenia" is like a "limp-in" mode in a computerized car...
...it is only supposed to get you to the mechanic to get it fixed.
What is lost in relationships can only be regained through relationships: the cure is in the curse.
(They need massive amounts of exposure to people who don't see them as the "problem child".)
Do they have a deficit of "reality"?
Or a deficit of "actionable fictions"?
If emotions flow from our interpretations of "reality", then our emotions are only possible for people with imaginations.
If your emotions are given no weight: that's when they get heavy.
when imagination is being held in an emotional choke-hold....is it supposed to track with "normal" reality while hypoxic?
Or should it track with the reality of the feeling of claustrophobia and suffocation?
You imagination would rather pretend it doesn't exist....than to be choked out of it
All perception is a guess or gamble. The light of understanding shines thru the mind's eye's aperture.
The imagination supplies the impromptu film and the "ego" provides the projection screen.
If you think you are the screen: you think the movie is happening to you.
If the movie is happening to you
      ...who is the writer?
      .....who is the producer?
And who is in the audience watching it?
      .....who is starring in it?
      ............are you cast or crew?
      ...or innocent unintentional(unpaid) extra?
Their problem with "reality", is due to their inability to "fictionalize" it into a co-herent narrative to actively stand behind.
Haven't they lost touch with their imaginations by trying to keep a "death-grip" on so-called "Reality"??
(maybe they actually deserve a break from the reality they are carrying that hasn't found voice)
If someone feels burdened by all the weight they are carrying.......does it help to have someone continually refer to it as lead?
How will it solve the "mystery of the perceived gravitational anomaly".....
by calling it "The Fool who collected so much Lead it crushed him and poisoned him?"
It shouldn't be hard to bend that BS.....
into fresh-BS: The brave-fool who collected so much Lead it crushed him.
Those who feel seen, those who are recognized to have died with honor or dignity are easier to resurrect.
(especially if they have been shown how trans-mute-tation, can give someone their voice back)
The heavy wait that held them back; turned out to be worth their wait in Gold.

And how free energy occurs in disconnection hypothesis?!!

    • @PerformanceThroughHealth
      @PerformanceThroughHealth 5 місяців тому

My basic grasp of this is that free energy is the same things as predictive errors. Therefore being a large gap between sensory inputs and internal sensory predictions, which would suggest giving a reason for such large perceptual issues in schizophrenia symptoms

It is dysconnection, meaning disturbed connection. This is how this hypothesis is called in Karl Friston's paper - www.fil.ion.ucl.ac.uk/~karl/The%20dysconnection%20hypothesis%20(2016).pdf

Kind of mechanistic? Sorry to be the party pooper bit I am kind of disappointed with this just-neurological approach to explain psychosis. One video before he just introduced into embodiment theory, the mind-body-surrounding-perceiving-action-circle an now he goes back, explaining schizophrenia with a model of a radio and its transistor? what?
