I have a tortoise of my own its not about them eating but my tortoise i think she is deformed are they ment to walk on their nails i think they do and mine just flops over what do i do she is 3 weeks old i need help do i just leave her or do something
I don't know what species my tortoise is he is Mediterranean and I have ruled out marginated and russian is it possible he could be a hybrid he has the EXACT shell design as your hermans tortoise but has different scales
Hi, mine's the same. Did yours improve? Mines about 9 months old - a horsfield/russian. Everything I offer they sniff and then ignore, or eat a tiny amount, at best.
This was so very informative!! I learned so much in just this video haha😊she is just adorable and it was fun watching her throughout the video:) thanks so much for sharing!! Lots of love to you and the pets!😊💙
The first 2 days i had her she wouldn't eat but i think it was just because she was still trying to process her new environment and once she felt safe/comfortable she started eating regularly
be careful if it was wild caught they can have parasites . I got one from a friend that started out ok but was dead in a month. now I would only get a captive breed baby. I just got a 2 month old leopard and he seems to be doing fine. I wouldn't let not eating go anymore then a day without taking him to a vet.
My yearling redfoot sleeps all day everyday, is this normal? He has good temps and plenty of plant and cover but he just sleeps in his hide and I never see him
Hi, I’ve never owned a redfoot and don’t know much about them but that doesn’t sound normal to me, tortoises are normally pretty active and come out to bask and eat. Do you have an exotics vet that could check him out? It may be worth asking on a forum or Facebook group to see if any other keepers have any ideas or similar experiences.
i have a great uncle who has a tortoise for nearly 50yrs now. he said to always leave food in there dish and water. they will eat when they want and will feel more natural for them.
@@billastell3753 yeah he says too many ppl just leave water in there and will only feed em when they think its time to feed their animal. He says he throws fresh stuff in there all throughout the day. never had an issue.
I would not be surprise if s/he has a dietary need that isn't being filled by the food you feed. I have no idea what that would be but if you study everything you can find about the needs of your particular variety.
My tortoise wont eat more than 3 of those size leaves. I dont know how to get him to eat. I'm so worried.ive tried rubbing strawberry on the leaves and he ignores it. I give him tons of variety and he barely eats. I'm kinda scared.
I would take him to a tortoise savy vet if you are worried. What is the temperature in his enclosure? Do you have correct heating and lighting? They can have difficulties digesting food if their heating/lighting is off
@@BeckysAnimals he ended up having a very extreme case of pin worms. When I bought him he seemed ok but I should have brought him to the vet when I first got him. He ended up getting very sick and I called the vet. They said they couldnt get him to the vet for another week and with how many worms he had he would likely die. The vet recommended i give him back to the store so they can hopefully get him to their vet faster than they could get him in. Really sad and scary. I hope he is doing better now cause it was so hard to give him up. I just didn't want him to die cause i wasn't willing to let him go.
My tortoise is has Anorexia and is sleeping a lot and not very active. Please help. The tank is warm, he isn’t dehydrated, the enclosure has just enough humidity. Please let me know what to do.
TheSmallPetShop When I woke up today I checked on my tortoise to see if he was okay. I picked him and and touched him but he wasn’t responding. I put him in water but that didn’t get a reaction either. I don’t think he’s dead because even when I pick him up face down his head remains in his shell and doesn’t hang out so he maintains some muscle control. He might be hibernating but it’s not even below 50 degrees and do they sleep that deep that he doesn’t move even when I did all those things? Do you know if he’s dead or hibernating. Thanks.
I've had a horsefield tortoise, about 3 months old for two days, he has perfect enclosure other than lighting ( cannot find bulbs atm) he has food but he just sleeps and wont eat or drink. Any tips
You really need to do a lot of research online. If you don't find the problem your tortoise will die soon. You should get that bulb without delay. The temperature may be too cold in the enclosure. They can't digest their food it they are not around 80 degrees. It will rot in their gut and they will die.
Hi, I have read from tortoise trust and seen from your videos that the best substrate for mediterranean tortoises is a sand/loam mix. Where do you buy your dirt/loam from and do you worry about organic/pesticide free topsoil and the worms that can typically come with topsoil you buy from gardening stores? Thank you :). Plus Sheldon's shell looks nice. Any tips for my tortoise's shell. His is kid of dry and he gets a bath about 3-4 times a week.
Yes, the most natural seems to be a loam and sand mix, I buy my top soil from The Range, I have not had any issues with bugs in the soil, I'm guessing due to the way it is bagged up maybe? I'm not sure how it hasn't been an issue. Calci-sand can cause eye irritations but I have never had any problems personally with play sand as it is fine and just mixes into the soil.
I wasn't able to watch your whole video so I'm not sure if you talked about what to do if your russian tortoise refuses to eat. mine quit eating a couple days ago. what should I do?
stephanie bishop Unless another animal has access to your enclosure, I suppose he must be eating it. How long have you had him? When I first brought Sheldon home, she was shy and didn't like eating in front of me. After spending lots of time with her, she became more comfortable and will now munch away in front of me, even out of my hand x
i bought a tortoise 5 days ago and he hasnt started eating yet or pooing. some people said that it has some food inside of its shell or something like that. is it normal?
iv had my herman for a month and a few days. He is 6 months and has lost weight. when I got him he was 52grams then he went to 53grams after a week. Then he went down to 51 on Friday. I checked him today and he is now 49grams. I have been on the forums and my mum said from now on just give him weeds and grass not vegies and little bits of grass. I'm not sure if I should be worried or og it is normal. Please help?
William Anderson if it's closer to winter it's normal as it's trying to hibernate. But if it's summer, then try soaking it in warm water, but make sure the water is shallow. Tortoises tend to poop or pee in warm water, so might as well try that.
I suppose you could do either, as long as there is enough room for them to sit inside and soak themselves and it is no deeper than their chin height :)
+Jack Turner The food or the tortoise? I soak the food for two reasons 1. I pick her food from my garden and I want to get all the bugs and soil off and 2. It's another way of getting moisture into her diet. Tortoises can become dehydrated and also need soaking a few times a week :)
It depends on the type of tortoise. My particular breed loves the occasional strawberry as a treat. They're small so I give them a half strawberry once or twice a month. Look up some food guide or tortoise books based on your type of tortoise. Looking up a guide is great for proper soaking care and what and what not to feed them as food and treats.

Different species have different requirements with their housing, diet and general care so I recommend looking into the care of the different species and seeing which would fit in better with your lifestyle, space, time constraints etc. Tortoises have complex requirements and live 100+ years so researching their care well is essential.
