One of the things I really love about this show that you guys touched on is that Marin feels like a real character. A lot of times in anime the female characters don't feel that well written or relatable but she really feels fleshed out as a character and it really helps the story and the romance feel believable.
Marin sticking her tongue out during the fireworks is still one of the FUNNIEST anime moments I've ever seen. 🤣🤣🤣 I can't even be mad that Marin ruined the mood cause it's SO in-character for her. 😅
I know the whole "popular manic pixie dream girl falls in love with the shy nerdy guy" is a bit of a cliche at this point, but I feel that what makes this show so good is that you can see why Marin would fall for someone like Gojo. Yeah, he's a bit awkward, but he also pays attention to her feelings and supports her interests, which is miles better than a bland generic "nice guy" character. And on the flip side, you can also see why someone like Gojo would be attracted to someone like Marin - I loved that part in episode 9 where he went on that little tangent about how much he admired her bright personality and attitude. Their relationship is just really sweet and wholesome (even with all the fanservice lol).
Not sure if it was mentioned before, but Marin actually has her tongue pierced. Although they removed it for the anime. The moment when she sticks her tongue out is one of the few times you actually see her piercing. lol
When I found out about it back when it was airing I was so dissapointed XD From what I read online the reason they removed it in the anime might be because it was very inconsistent in the manga. Damn shame, what could've been...
@@RatoInsano I don't think it is that it is inconsistent and more so that there are very few opportunities in manga you would see enough of a character's tongue to see it. My personal thoughts are that they probably didn't want to encourage teens to pierce their tongues.
Aaaah maaan that totes suuuuck. That’s totally being too cowardly on the studios side for not including it. Would be interesting if they at some point included that in season 2.
I think the fan service actually does a lot for the series. As a guy, I recognize that this show is doing a surprisingly incredible job of matching the male gaze with its camera angles. It's matching what a guy like Gojo would either be looking at and paying attention to in any given moment or what would stick in his memory after-the-fact/or the he would be fantasizing about as it happens even if he can't see. I think that adds to the story because Gojo isn't used to being close to girls like this, because there are lots of times in the show where we can see Gojo is self-conscious about what he is paying attention to. I'm not someone who normally will defend fan-service as actually being important, but I just actually think it adds to this show in particular. Season 2 is coming soon and I'm so excited. Some big things happened in the manga recently, so I'm hoping this season does well so I can see them animated in season 3. The manga is amazing, but this is an anime that seriously elevates the source material to a higher level. The acting and animation are all on point with the timing and tones of voice- it's crazy good. Let us all pray for season 3 so we can so the animating of the amazing "You're making me fall for you even more!! I really can't even ❤❤!" scene and the follow-up scene with "....Uh... Kitagawa-san... Aren't we a bit too close...??" I said it cryptically to not spoil but if you know those two scenes, then you too yearn for them to be animated even in your sleep.
I have also seen people comment on there being less fan service when he is relaxed or distracted. They could have added more up skirt shots, but he was just talking to her or looking at what she was showing him and not thinking about her as a girl but as a friend.
The problem with the term 'Fan Service' is that people think any suggestive, explicit scene that shows skin or nudity is 'fan service', particularly in the West. Most of these scenes in Dress-up Darling aren't that, and it's why a lot of it doesn't feel as awkward or detract from the series since almost all of it has relevance and paint a point. Typical suggestive fan service in most series really does get frustration precisely because it's purely that and tends to heavily take away from the series it's in. I also really can't wait for Season 2 and hope we eventually get a Season 3! They touch on some amazing topics in the recent chapters that were stunning and really appreciated as an artisan! It's been a huge year for romance series!!
What’s great about this show, and others that focus more on a couple being a couple and doing things, is that there’s a lot less drama. Aside from the “will they, won’t they” aspect, it’s all about moments that they share that could bring them closer, rather than break them apart. Even though there was the introduction of another girl who could be interested, as far as I know, it hasn’t gone down the route of harem tropes that could normally ruin such a sweet concept
Maybe I'm a degenerate, but the fanservice seems wholesome to me. It represents the struggle of being young, and attracted to the opposite sex. Particularly for young men which have a far more difficult time with it than you might imagine. The intensity is almost constant at that age.
@@brianng8350 I don't think it's wrong. It's an embarrassed, and reserved reaction to the female form. It's not the "male" pov because much older men could care less since they've experienced that already. Older men may look, and appreciate, but they won't feel embarrassed about it.
The Art director and the Team that draw the Firework was begging to the producer for doing a firework, it was actual planed that they don't use a cliché ending like with a firework. it is one of the best fireworks probably till today. When i remember correct. All firework is actually hand drawn, probably. Texas Chainsaw massacre is actual no fiction xD
Not me getting emotional because it's near the end of the year now, and it's making me reflect on all the amazing people I've met this year who have made similar promises to keep making precious memories next year....the last time I watched this episode, I wasn't in a situation where I could relate to that. But now I can. I'm tearing up ❤
Such an adorable series. Marin subverts expectations with that little blue tongue of hers. She can afford to be patient. She's a girl in love, and her boy isn't too far behind her...staring at the nape of her neck. 😂 I described this series to a friend as 'Too Wholesome for this world...while being on the verge of becoming an eechi. If you see past the gratuitous fan service, you'll find one of the best romance stories produced in a long time.' Looking forward to Season 2.
Gojo and Marin's relationship is so sweet and endearing, very easy to root for. I so look forward to seeing how they develop it in future seasons. Thus was a very lovely show, it was a pleasure watching it with you gals.
Your thoughts at the end were so nice, because you expressed the real beauty of this series and what truly elevates it and makes it memorable once you look past the tropes and fanservice typical of anime. One of my top romcoms indeed. It was a pleasure watching it again with all of you. Season 2 cant arrive sooner!!
I'm neither a fan of or overly offended by fanservice, it is what it is and it barely registers unless its egregious (Fire Force...) but this show and Kill la Kill are the only ones where I will take the bullet and say 'No it actually makes sense for the story'. Two shows where being unable to see past fan service would make you miss out on incredible and unique stories. Both this and Kaguya-sama: love is war made me sprint to the manga to see how the story continues, something i'd never thought i'd say about romance anime.
Waiting for the next season left a hole in my heart. The only series that helped is The Dangers In My Heart. Would love to see ya react to it on the channel.
If you want a massive cuteness overload, you should check out Love After World Domination. It's like Power Rangers meets THIS episode, fanservice is also at a bare minimum. It's pure adorableness
If you guys liked this anime you might like: "The Dangers in my Heart" and "Don't toy with me, Miss Nagatoro", these anime have some similarities with My Dress-up Darling imo
13:47 It also saves on having to animate more detailed aspects, like eyes, hair, and facial expressions, allowing for more dynamic animation in other parts. It’s one of many shortcuts that animators use so they don’t have to work themselves to death the entire time, like that one episode of Invincible mentioned. However, I don’t doubt that certain shots and angles might have some kind of intention behind them, whether for fanservice or something with an actual meaning to it, but majority of the time, I’m sure that this is the reason.
Since she can't swim, I really want to see how ridiculous the tension would get if they decided to have him teach her. And it would probably go both ways since they'd both be in swimsuits. Add in him probably having to do stuff like support her back with his hand while teaching how to float on it... They'd burst into flames while still in the pool!
"I look forward to season 2" - Over two years and still no actual planned date for it, starting to wonder if the original announcement was actually official. The good news is the actual manga continues to be real good.
cool, i watched this for the first time along w/ the reactions. pretty much had the same thoughts about it which based on the closing discussion about what y'all liked/disliked about this romance series def checkout Nana in your personal time. so iconic. lots of "real/relatable" romance moments, but the most unique aspect is the anime focuses on the women/women friendship between the two leads. also, lots of distinct side characters and they're all 20 years old or older, so there's actual kiss/sex scenes BUT they are never presented in a fan service way at all. it's serious, dramatic, silly, romantic, philosophical, so many things. i love it so much since i watched it this summer using past series from the channel to describe it, it has aspects of bocchi the rock, my-dress-up darling, kaguya, spy family, and its own. im trying so hard to sell it 😭
I personally hope Gojo never actually cosplays. Every group of friends, I feel, needs that one person who is not as into whatever everyone else is into but is still hugely supportive in their own way. Gojo is like a guy who was in our car/truck club a few decades ago. He really wasn't into slamming, lifting and customizing vehicles like the rest of us, but he loved the car audio aspect of the scene and loved helping out when someone wanted to do a new audio install.
Can you do a review on the anime Your Lie in April It's a really good anime Romantic style is a bit sad but really recommended I hope you do a review on this anime 🙏🙏🙏

"fan service" is intrinsic to anime and no amount of offended westerners is ever going to change that. You can't just tell these people how to make their media because it doesn't fit your sensibilities.
"its real" is a good way to sum up this show, its a realistic teen romance.
Also Gojo best Husbondo!
