To all potential film makers reading this- After 30 plus years of film school and working in the trade I will let you know a secret. It took me twenty years to learn this secret.... And I will give it you for free! Here it is- The reason most independent films fail is because the people making them are still trying to make them as if they were mainstream, studio films. That is it. The only way to make low budget films is to work against the way films are made by the mainstream. How is that you ask? For starters you have to forget EVERYTHING about how film making has been taught in film school and in the traditional trade. Let us begin with the basic concepts - Pre production- Screenplay. The traditional rules about story/ structure work against independent films and favor traditional /mainstream/ studio film making. Why? Because if you follow the standard screenplay rules you will find yourself trying to write the same kind of movie the big studios make! The only problem is that you DO NOT HAVE THE KIND OF MONEY THEY HAVE. So, find yourself a story the majors will not touch with a ten meter pole. You have to reinvent the wheel for your film. After all who wants to pay to watch a watered down version of what the get at the multiplex every damned week? -Pre Viz. This is a phase independent film makers have to nail before trying to shoot any footage. If you do not you will be toast. I wish I had a dollar for every time I have heard an independent filmmaker say storyboards are for big budget films. Every time I have told someone starting a film to story board and they have ignored me and they go ahead and shoot the films they end up with a mess of footage. And they go broke. -Financing. Trying to finance a film using traditional business schemes is A- Almost impossible. Such schemes are designed for traditional films! B- It condemens you to make a more expensive film if you manage to make it under that regime As in the screenplay phase you WILL HAVE TO FIND YOUR OWN WAY TO MAKE YOUR FILM. Production- -The concept of CREW. - OH my. Every time I walk into the set of a low budget film I find a miniature version of a major Hollywood crew. That is WRONG. Think of the French New Wave for an example of how the crew can be re invented. And you will have to find a way to customize a crew for your film. If not you will be toast. Hint- Watch the making of film of The Shining. S Kubrick had all the money he wanted and yet he choose to make it with a VERY unusual crew for a major Hollywood film. Ask yourself WHY he did so. - Mise en scene and style etc- The same thing I said about the screenplay applies here- YOU WILL HAVE TO MAKE YOUR FILM DIFFERENT FROM ALL OTHER FILMS SIMILAR TO IT or you will find people bored to tears by it. -Casting . Avoid clones. You now what I mean... POST PRODUCTION (Yep, in ALL CAPS) Editing - Some people think editing as an after thought. Oh boy. Editing rooms is where films are actually made! Before editing all you have is footage. People don't pay to watch footage. Ever heard about a movie titled Heaven's Gate ? Best damned footage ever shot in Hollywood and one of the worst movies ever made. -Music-/sound- Same thing as about the screenplay. After 30 years people have become bored to tears by the ''Standard indy movie soundtrack'' including all the damned top 40 songs of the last 60 years... After all this rant all i can say is that there is ONE film that proves all of the above things. You should buy the disc of it and watch it 20 times before trying to make a film. Want to know the title of it? ERASERHEAD. That's it. Lynch rewrote all the rules of film making to make it. At the first screening there were 20 people in the audience. The rest is history.I know, you will say ''But I do not want to make Eraserhead!'' Of course not! What you will have to do is actually harder than what Lynch did- YOU WILL HAVE A FILM AS DIFFERENT FROM ALL OTHER FILMS AS ERASERHEAD IS FROM ALL OTHER FILMS!!! But then you will have to HAVE THE GUTS the guy had. PS- If you can not stomach Eraserhead (I cant) there are two others you can watch just as good- El Topo and Repoman. The reason I give you all this for free is because I do not think this is what you want to hear. Right? None of the people I have told it to have wanted to hear it either. They got angry/bothered and did not care about it. Then they went ahead tried to make their movie just like EVERY other independent film is made, then got angry and bothered when it crashed and burned. Oh well.
+CortoArmitage Thanks for the valuable insight man....really appreciated. I am a photographer that wants to shoot video/films because I want to do something else than just fixed images. Do you think you can make short films as one man crew? It's not that I can't find other people, but I really want to see if it's possible to produce a short film from begin to end all by myself.
+CortoArmitage Thankyou for the solid advice, I've always wanted to make movies but have been discouraged by the industry. Recently I've found that my passion and drive is re-ignited when I'm completely divorced from the industry
+Lutte Kikker I think what he means is, rethink your idea of a crew. Maybe you don't need a DOP. Maybe you just want a fellow collaborator. Or a mentor. Or maybe you just need someone to hit record. It all depends. I've recently been working 'solo' at live gigs, and I've learned so much about sound, music, and collaboration, just be turning up and saying "hey, can i film here?' and everyone else going 'sure, how can we help?' Honestly I think we could learn a lot from musicians, they've been doing their thing successfully for eons before there was an established music industry.
This just shows how rough the life of an independent filmmaker can be. You can be as good as possible, more talented than anyone else, but if you're not spotted you won't succeed. It takes luck and tenacity... and courage. Good luck to everyone who's trying to succeed! Don't give up and remind yourself why you're doing it!
Every filmmaker needs to watch this video, beginner or pro. I've only been doing live-action film-making for 7 months... I have this weird obsession with it.
I'm 17 years old and I just finished my first short film. After rendering the final cut, I watched this video. Honestly, I felt a tug in my heartstrings. I could look back and almost relive those moments, if not all, to full extent. I was blown away by myself and my crew. Whether my film is good or bad, I realized that we made this short film together and we spent 15-20 hours each and every day perfecting the craft that we've grown to love. Sometimes it would just be me and my actor on set but we still did our best and it would feel so hard for us to do the things we ended up doing. And then when I watched my film after a million times already, I did feel insignificant. I felt guilty dragging my crew in to make this short film that I thought wouldn't make much of a difference in anyone's lives. But then I realized, it did. It made a difference to us, to the people who worked on it day and night, dragging their asses through glass and smiling while they were doing it because they LOVE what they do. And that's why we are what we are. We're filmmakers. We may die but our films live forever. Thank you, Mr. Darious.
That's what it's all about at the end of the day Brutha! We do it because we love it and there's no better reason. Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this ;)
+Schney Thanks for the enthusiasm. :) Here's the link. It also contsins my native language called Tamil, from India. Hope you watch it and comment on what you feel and share it with your friends if you like it. :)
D4Darious Dude, you've been a huge help to me. I've been stuck in a creative rut for while now and lost my motivation, but now the flame has been rekindled. Thank you for that. You're up there with FreddieW on my list of motivators bro.
LITERALLY MY ENTIRE LIFE. I have an obsession for making videos, but I don't have the people to help. In my area, people think what I do is worthless... that's why its hard for me to release a good UA-cam video every week :( quality over quantity any day.
+MajorInkPeoples I'm from the los angeles area, i just started about 3 months ago in this filmmaking thing. i love it, i spend most of my day brainstorming ideas for my next short. if you're ever in the area, you should contact me. i would be more than happy to link up for a collaboration. best of luck to you!
+MajorInkPeoples I totally get you. I'm really into making movies and film projects too but it's damn hard to find people who are as passionate about it as I am and doing this stuff just requires a decent crew to work with
yeah me too i really am im 13 years old and filming my first short film after new years and im already getting actors and a crew but no one is taking me seriously ugh it sucks i have the equitment and want to be a big timer movie producer but i cant bc the place i grew up in so this video relates with me so much just in a lower level i hope you guys understand and thanks for making these videos they really help me...
+Christopher Kersey There are a "million" filmmakers out there since DSLR filmmaking is in reach for most people now. Many people try in fact but it's true, only 2% (or not even 1%) will be succesfull (i.e. hit the big screen). The problem is that SO many people try hard at this moment that there is a overflow of short films at this moment on Vimeo (and UA-cam). 10 years ago you hardly had Shortfilms on UA-cam. Seriously, we live in a fantastic time at this moment and because everyone has some sort of Full HD film camera nowadays you need to come up with a really good story (in the first place) and probably a lot of luck.
As a highschool student with a GoPro this totally resonates with me, I'll hike 6 kilometers out just for a shot that lasts maybe three seconds.....its hard work, but I love it!
You start with a dream And then you understand how hard you must work to get this done You stand against the question "Do is continue pursuing this?" And then you realize there is nothing that makes you as happy as making movies does! thanks guys... see you on the reddest carpet
I must never let myself stop doing what I love, I'll watch this every time I get discouraged, so I can tell myself HELL NO, you're a film maker god dammit! thank you D4Darious :)
Perhaps it sounds ridiculous, but the best thing that young filmmakers should do is to get hold of a camera and some film and make a movie of any kind at all. -Stanley Kubrick Theres never been a better time to be a filmmaker.
Blake Bauer Wrong. The beat thing young filmmakers can do is : WRITE. If they cna write good scripts and progress, if they can DRAW the movie scenes then capturing it on camera is the last thing they can do. Basically filming is the last thing you will do. Because filming anyone can film ANYONE. But coming up eith the base fundamentals of a film which is writing a great script and drawing the scenes then you will have a good future man.
I keep getting discouraged about making films cos it seems like I have none of the resources... I am trying my best to do it, but it seems like everything keeps falling through. This video gives me some ray of hope though. Thank you Darious You're really helping out a lot
Rahul Raheja Unfortunately, we haven't even gotten costumes together. As much as I want to do this and get it done, like I said, things keep falling through
I do believe your video cleared the bar above the 99%. Every once in awhile someone comes along and expresses the thoughts, feelings, longings of the masses. YOU, unequivocally, have done that here. BRAVO!
I used to make short little amateur films in high school and this speaks true. I mean, I didn't do it as a profession, but as a hobby. The whole headache of finding reliable people to film with, a good location, a doable story, dealing with schedules of your actors, buying new equipment with barely any money etc...Such a pain in the ass, but once you finally got to film day and started shooting, it was so damn fun. It's weird, because I never made a single cent off of these videos, even though I poured a lot of money into making them. My videos never really got past a thousand or so views. But why did I keep making them? Because the reward of finishing a film was awesome. Sucks now, that I don't have time to film. If I was willing to, I'd go study film in college right now. But the risks are too great for me.
D4Darious I'd love to one day. I had bought a DSLR to film, but never got the chance to use it. Heck, I might even do a short first person POV action film with a new GoPro I got this summer.
made me think about how badly i was failing my degree let alone making a film. Remember the time when everyone in my class kinda flaked out on me, and i knew i wanted to make my graduation film and i had literally some experimental films here and there but not something i was really proud about and tbh i wanted really passionate about it at the start. Number of reasons but mainly cuz my teachers never liked the films i made, always some criticism and they were right. Last few weeks till deadline and i knew i wanted to make something that pull heart strings. I went out alone and tried to find as many people to interview to make something that was touching. While i had no one but myself i went out knowing it was a hard job and made the film all alone and made a film. it was really hard but i did it, I Remember how everyones film had a team and mine was just me. All i remember is my teachers got up and Clapped, while the other people films were good, mine hit home. I Remember i was almost in tears when the teacher said "Before i let anyone say something, you worked so hard alone but Well Done you did it" and in that moment i knew that, this was my calling that i would never stop. I remember the last thing i said to my teacher when she told " You messed around the past 3 years but i think you finally got there, Don't stop here" to which i replied "I'll never Stop and haven't looked back yet". Something are you are just Proud to put your name on to.
I love the indy film community, it's so much more than just superhero movies and sequels! And I'm so proud of all of those who will never give up on filmmaking! You may never earn the fair amount of credit you deserve, but you are a true storyteller and don't let anyone tell you wrong. Hell the indy community is called a community for a reason, we're all here for eachother, to help eachother tell a story that will hopefully inspire people. And only if we inspire only one person then it will be worth it! Btw thanks D4darious for inspiring and helping the indy film community! We are the future, let's make the future great!
Dawson Boyle Thank you for the support Dawson. I do it for the love of the craft just like everyone else. There's a lot of hope for us though. Believe it or not, things are looking better and better for indie filmmakers now. We have way more opportunities than we ever did before. We just need to be smarter in the way that we use them. Good to hear from you!
Yes, i have also found that our resources have brought us a long way, and the generation were living in is making it easier for the indie community to one day be the future of film! And Great to hear from you too, love your channel and your short "Seafood Tester"!
This is so motivational. D4Darious. Filmmaking is all about entertain, educate and inspire people. This video is just one of those rare inspirational video you can hardly find when UA-cam is squeezed with millions of pointless videos.
Absolutely loved this video Darious! It hits right at home with me and I'm sure a ton of other film makers out there. Everything you said is true and I'm sure inspired a lot of people. I'm one of them,!
Half the budget for my short film fell through today, so I decided to empty my bank account, tell everyone we'll be filming in two days instead of three, almost cry, watch this, feel better again, and what's more excited. Still making my first film, as a writer and director. Still making it. Fuck yeah.
Darious, you are 100 percent right. I've worked the big budget shows. There's a lot of waste of money. The smaller projects, no pay are fun to work on. But it's a labor of love. If you want to do a project. Learn from the bottom up. The problem is, everybody wants to DIRECT..And nobody wants to be the clean up guy. Does anybody know the James Cameron story or J.K Rowlings. They did it when nobody believe in them, and they made it big time. " The Chronicles of Jake Tanner Hell's Lane... Now that's a story.
I keep coming back to this video after feeling down and hopeless about film-making. this video just says it all, the ending always gives me goose-bumps. Kudos to you Darious for making this video in such a professional, engaging, emotional, expressive, and informative way. am I exaggerating? nope :)
You're the man D4Darious. you gave me more faith in doing my Film.. im actually 16 and im buying a canon and some things to make a film. a Zombie film you motivated me more. thank you.
Thank you for creating this in a way so as not to be discouraging! I liked that you outlined all the hardships and then went into why real filmmakers push through and keep going. Thanks for the heads up on what I'll probably experience in the future...
You are awesome.. This video totally blew me away.. The work that goes into filmmaking is incredible.. It is so important to have a good team that works well together. Wow you are very talented.. Thanks for sharing
As a writer, I already can tell how hard it is to make a movie. This is why I want my first movie to be directed by someone instead of doing myself, not because of this video, but because I want to see how it works. It sure is depressing to think your work isn't good enough. But it is still a privilege to assemble so many ideas. I like to think that I'm like Stanley Kubrick or Charlie Kaufman. I'm a really perfectionist guy.
Congrats, D4Darious U talked 4 ALL of US, the independent ones !! Your movie about making a movie is so sincere and touching that almost made me cry *.* About the calling, it happens and U cannot stop the process *.* Hope U + your people conquer many prizes on Festivals and spread your talent and vibe !! Amazing work
Film-making isn't easy, but for God's sake, after two minutes of this all I was thinking was "So?...And?.." Just BUCK THE FUCK UP and accept the difficulties, forget your failures, and face the next challenge as a person better conditioned for adverse situations and just do it! With all due respect, calling this the "truth about film-making" is just an ambiguous statement about the challenges you will probably run into as a film maker.
Darious, this is a fabulous short. It has really all the things we do through as Indies. I congratulate you for the great representation of our lives and yes, this is a privilege and although my films have not won anything, I am proud to put my name on them!
The most honest and beautiful explanation for why we do what we do I have ever seen. I've watched and shared this video countless times and every single time it hits home. Every time I've wanted to give up this year I watch this video and find the strength to carry on. Thank you. Thank you for all that you do.... it means more than you'll ever know.
A friend shared a story with me a few weeks back and said that it's meant for me. I read it constantly now: "Creates the man and next to him the Fate, wicked: "Why you hustle oh poor one? For fame and fortune, for blessings or just because of obstinacy? Don't you see that day after day the man only for the bread thinks" But the man creates, doesn't stop "I want - he says- to leave a mark, I shall not be a slave of reality, I feel, I create. There are no other fates for me, no hard times, no obstacles. Only freedom! Every other one leave a drop and I shall leave a mark, like this - in one or two hearts... What more than that to seek from the world? " The Fate stayed there for a while and looked upon him and thought - "I shall not take his soul" And left the man alone but his way never even hint "
NicolovsVideo wow. Pretty deep. I had to read it a few times to really get it lol. That could just be because I'm slow though. Thanks for sharing that Nico! Always good to hear from you Bro.
Every second of this video is a testament to what a smart and dedicated filmmaker you are man. Not only was it honest and informative, it was emotionally resonant. Well effing done!
I watched this video shortly after it came out and it was really encouraging. Soon I will begin my second term in the first semester of film school. Thank you Darious!
Feel ya bro same goes for us independent hobby musicians Don't make a dime (yet) but its the passion/calling that drives us The video itself tells a great story. Looking forward to seeing your movies
I'm 16 years old and hearing this speaks to me a lot my ww2 film has cost me $670.00 plus food and gas for transportation and at the end of every shoot I think this will never happen or this sucks but after I spend a few hours editting I fell better.
"Winners are not people who never fail but people who never quit." -- Unknown The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams. Eleanor Roosevelt Dream it.Wish it. Do it......
I watched this week's ago and shared it now I'm back and this time in tears. Someone gets it! It's what we do, who we are! Thank you Darious you are a God send.
I'm just getting into videography, and this is honestly the most inspiring thing that I have ever seen. It's been a lifelong passion of mine, so it was nice to see this! Thank you so much
This made me cry...thank you. Thank you for your words, thank you for your hard work. You are extraordinarily talented, but the fact that you choose to give back just makes you even greater.
I've used many of your videos in my high school classroom over the years. I've not seen this one until today. I love it. This is exactly what I was looking for to get my students thinking differently about cinema and their relationship with it.
This is one of my favorite video because it speaks volume about the reality of what filmmaking is all about. most people don't realize that amount of blood, sweat and tears that goes into making a film or the sacrifice you have to make. keep up the good work brother, and keep inspiring others to go after their dreams.
Impressive !!! This 4 minute video is a perfect example of what it takes to make a successful film. HEART. Not success measured by money, fame or by critics, but by taking a concept, a thought and turning into something tangible. Darious fantastic testament to the creative process.
This rings so true. I make my films because it's a labour of love - it's hard and often frustrating but I wouldn't swap it for anything. I think I'll add this to my favourites and watch it whenever things aren't going quite to plan. Great video dude!
The funny thing is once in a while we have something that happens that is the nail in the coffin, or at least we think. That's it.....I am done with this crap. But then some time passes, and the creative juices still flow, and just like you said.....we've got to do this. We do not have a choice. People would think we do. We can do whatever we want, or not do whatever we want. However, it is not that easy when you've got these visions, these stories, these moving moments, the really cool shot ideas.....a killer line for a character....or something you know will blow you away, and you hope it will do the same for others. When that hits you cannot avoid it. You cannot say no to it. It has to be done..... ......so you start thinking about what you are going to need; what kind of location, where you can find that, what equipment you would like to have, and what equipment you are "likely" to have.... Whatever your situation you figure it out, because you have to. Creativity will happen, and we are taken along for the ride, sometimes kicking, sometimes with an "Oooooohhh yeeaaahh!!!!!"
All men dream, but not equally. the dreamers of the night dream in the dusty recesses of their minds wake up to see that it was vanity. But the dreamers of the day are dangerous men for they act upon their dreams with open eyes. - T. E. Lawrence
Wow...very powerful!! Whomever dislikes this video is obviously not a filmmaker...I would even go as far as saying that they are haters. Kudos to you and your crew Darious!!
yeah but instead of going to film school or studying something film related, I did economics, about to graduate this June, I hate the subject but having reassurance is something people might need to persist in film making.
***** A quick reality check. I have one of those so-called "Marketable College Diplomas". That is not a guarantee of financial success or security. If I had a re-do button I would choose an art college instead of a division-1 university. A wise decision isn't always the best decision.
Of course studying your passion is not incorrect, but getting a 'marketable college degree' makes you more employable in the real world, if your pursuit in art fails its reassuring knowing that you can start again elsewhere. For example chris nolan worked office jobs to fund his first feature film 'following'. To be a successful you have to be equal amount realist and dreamer.
I watch this every single time I get discouraged whether it be because actors bail on me last minute or I just don't like my story idea. This video boosts me and reminds me that no matter what just keep on going cause you're not the only one who goes through all these filmmaking problems. Thank you for this.
Everytime I am in doubt of myself while in the processing of mine art project, whether its a photoshoot for a album or possibly short film in the future, I will watch this video till i gain some strength of carrying on.
I have cried every time I've watch this because its just so truthful! You have really captured the feeling of being a filmmaker and every time I watch this I know this is what I want my career to be no doubt about it!
Yes it is hard to make a film. I think everyone already knows this. I'm facing that right now with getting my own short film started. The person I'd chosen to play the main character isn't very reliable unfortunately. So I think I'll just have to have to play that part. It'll be difficult trying to get someone else to move the camera in the same way as I want, so will have to go through it all before each take. It's a challenge, but I'm going to be patient with the project :)
Although it may be cynical it's the truth. Most people glorify filmmaking. If I can quote rocky it's not all sunshine and rainbows. There's a big difference in being positive and being delusional. This video perfectly describes the other side of filmmaking no one talks about.
I literally have to watch something from you everyday to keep me motivated and inspired to push through. You are a powerhouse of inspiration darious ! Keep pushing though the struggle
I'm half way through my Film Production BA Hons degree at university, and I needed to see this video! I'll be showing it to others as well. You hit the nail on the head. Great work as usual, man. Keep it up!
I am watching this video for the 4th time in a row! I just completed my film All the emotions I went through for the past one year combined in a single video.. Thanks.
This is terrific man and so inspiring! I hadn’t made a film in over six years and I kept ignoring the calling but I’m finally getting back into it. It’s never too late. Thanks for this!
Excellent! Every thing that goes through my head as I continue to write film you covered in a brilliant, poetic, almost like a rap-artist song, I think we push on because if we give up our passion (in any field, but as artist even more) If we give up OUR PASSION we die.

Thanks for sharing you thoughts on it Joker! Good to hear from you ;)
Thank you.
Three days into directing my first short, I needed this. Thank you so much
I'm hoping to start my web series. I needed this as well.
SuperSamStuff You're more than welcome SuperSam and good luck Bruh!
SuperSamStuff 1)how did your first short go.. 2)I'm late I know.. But now it's 3 days for my first short..
SuperSamStuff 9
This made me cry.
Why?
Ohh i want to comment that but when i come and see first comment, this made me more cry.
I teared up, this video is extremely inspiring
Every filmmaker needs to watch this video, beginner or pro. I've only been doing live-action film-making for 7 months... I have this weird obsession with it.
How long did you make brickfilms for?
***** About 3 years.
For me, if you count just moving the camera around and not taking pictures, it has been 6 years. But for actual stop motions it has been 3 years.
(Brickfilms)
And I've only made one live action video in 2012
I'm 17 years old and I just finished my first short film.
Thanks for sharing your thoughts on this ;)
Arjun Dinesh NOW I REALLY WANNA SEE IT
+Schney Thanks for the enthusiasm. :) Here's the link. It also contsins my native language called Tamil, from India.
Hope you watch it and comment on what you feel and share it with your friends if you like it. :)
Dayum bro... I am on youtube looking for some inspiration and I stumble upon you of all people.. Believe me I'm proud to call you my senior. 😊
Dayum bro... I am on youtube looking for some inspiration and I stumble upon you of all people.. Believe me I'm proud to call you my senior. 😊
I watch this every time I'm not sure about pursuing a project
;)
D4Darious Dude, you've been a huge help to me. I've been stuck in a creative rut for while now and lost my motivation, but now the flame has been rekindled. Thank you for that. You're up there with FreddieW on my list of motivators bro.
Inspiration from d4dariois
LITERALLY MY ENTIRE LIFE. I have an obsession for making videos, but I don't have the people to help. In my area, people think what I do is worthless... that's why its hard for me to release a good UA-cam video every week :( quality over quantity any day.
+MajorInkPeoples Stay strong.
+MajorInkPeoples same
+MajorInkPeoples I totally get you. I'm really into making movies and film projects too but it's damn hard to find people who are as passionate about it as I am and doing this stuff just requires a decent crew to work with
yeah me too i really am im 13 years old and filming my first short film after new years and im already getting actors and a crew but no one is taking me seriously ugh it sucks i have the equitment and want to be a big timer movie producer but i cant bc the place i grew up in so this video relates with me so much just in a lower level
i hope you guys understand and thanks for making these videos they really help me...
It was all worth it for this! Such a great short film!!!!! Keep inspiring!
because we love it! simple, yet elegant!
bro, you put tears into my eyes.. :')
Muaz Osman Glad you were feeling this Muaz! It's for us by us =)
True
Yes, mine too. :)
"You're going to fail."
"Millions of us fail, but how many even try in the first place?"
You start with a dream
And then you understand how hard you must work to get this done
You stand against the question "Do is continue pursuing this?"
And then you realize there is nothing that makes you as happy as making movies does!
thanks guys... see you on the reddest carpet
I must never let myself stop doing what I love, I'll watch this every time I get discouraged, so I can tell myself HELL NO, you're a film maker god dammit! thank you D4Darious :)
Now think about all of the hard work put in just to make this!
lol so true
Perhaps it sounds ridiculous, but the best thing that young filmmakers should do is to get hold of a camera and some film and make a movie of any kind at all. -Stanley Kubrick
Theres never been a better time to be a filmmaker.
RwE Wrestling At a boy.
Blake Bauer Im also 11 and Im working on my first feauture film with literally no one wanting to help me or act in it, but I'm trying.
Keep going man. The more u do, the better you'll become, and please trust me that as you get better people will start to notice and want to be a part.
Blake Bauer
Your forgetting about actors and crew that you need to make a film because anybody can’t do it alone
It is a privilege. Thanks for this, Darious- we shall keep on keeping on.
LYDIA Amen to that LYDIA =)
That's why we keep going, you're totally right. Great video man! Very inspiring.
Goosebumps my friend! You summed up my life!
P3Series Thank you for sharing P3Series. You're definitely not alone Bruh! This is a lot of peoples story lol.
Breathtaking and inspiring, thank you Darious this made me remember why I got into filmmaking in the first place.
You're more than welcome AloomaX. Thank you for watching!
TheAloomaX Could not agree more. This is exactly what I needed to see today.
D4Darious You're the man, I've got nothing but respect for you and your work.
I keep getting discouraged about making films cos it seems like I have none of the resources...
I am trying my best to do it, but it seems like everything keeps falling through.
This video gives me some ray of hope though.
Thank you Darious
You're really helping out a lot
Zandriel Grimm So how's it going? Did it work out
Rahul Raheja Unfortunately, we haven't even gotten costumes together.
As much as I want to do this and get it done, like I said, things keep falling through
Whenever I'm feeling discouraged as a Filmmaker, this video snaps me right out of it. Thank you, Darious.
+Rene Rivas Would be awesome to work together on a production as well. I'm also from Tucson, living in Flagstaff now.
I do believe your video cleared the bar above the 99%. Every once in awhile someone comes along and expresses the thoughts, feelings, longings of the masses. YOU, unequivocally, have done that here. BRAVO!
I couldn't say it any better. Great job, this video was done beautifully! :)
Me again, watched more than 10 times.
sunnyspeed studio this is my 2nd time
Same here
same here. Fantastic movie!
Me as well 😢
I used to make short little amateur films in high school and this speaks true.
BattlefrontZero Thank you for sharing BFZero. Good to hear from you and maybe one day you can pick the camera back up...even if it's just an iphone ;)
D4Darious I'd love to one day. I had bought a DSLR to film, but never got the chance to use it. Heck, I might even do a short first person POV action film with a new GoPro I got this summer.
BattlefrontZero has always l
That was just, well, awesome. "Because we love it." :)
***** haha Thanks Basic. This video took me 9 months to make.
That doesn't surprise me at all. Really well done on the message. :)
This made me choke up and drop a tear. "I made that" Thank You.
Brilliant! I know what it means and you just nailed it!!! Thanks a lot. It helps a lot.
Thanks for commenting Soumalya!
You are welcome:) I love your channel!
made me think about how badly i was failing my degree let alone making a film.
Raymond Hamby Thanks for sharing your thoughts Ray-ray =)
Raymond Hamby stop making movies.
***** That's not nice holyender. Play nice ;)
***** that comment didnt even make sense LOL!
Half the budget for my short film fell through today, so I decided to empty my bank account, tell everyone we'll be filming in two days instead of three, almost cry, watch this, feel better again, and what's more excited. Still making my first film, as a writer and director. Still making it. Fuck yeah.
What is your short film called
@@jessicaribot2288 It's going to be in Dutch. It's called "Hooijmeyers Viool" (Hooijmeyer's Violin).
Short film released? Would love to watch it
Darious, you are 100 percent right.
Kudos to you Darious for making this video in such a professional, engaging, emotional, expressive, and informative way.
am I exaggerating? nope :)
You're the man D4Darious. you gave me more faith in doing my Film.. im actually 16 and im buying a canon and some things to make a film. a Zombie film you motivated me more. thank you.
I just made a suspense film and uploaded it. This really is inspiring
Thank you for creating this in a way so as not to be discouraging! I liked that you outlined all the hardships and then went into why real filmmakers push through and keep going. Thanks for the heads up on what I'll probably experience in the future...
Thank you. Just, damn.
Thank you.
AtZ Reviews Thank you for commenting AtZ! =)
You are awesome.. This video totally blew me away.. The work that goes into filmmaking is incredible.. It is so important to have a good team that works well together. Wow you are very talented.. Thanks for sharing
Thank you for watching!
"Because We Love It" 💯💯💯
The most honest and beautiful explanation for why we do what we do I have ever seen.
I read it constantly now:
"Creates the man
and next to him the Fate, wicked:
"Why you hustle oh poor one?
For fame and fortune, for blessings or just because of obstinacy?
Don't you see that day after day the man only for the bread thinks"
But the man creates, doesn't stop
"I want - he says- to leave a mark, I shall not be a slave
of reality,
I feel,
I create.
There are no other fates for me,
no hard times, no obstacles.
Only freedom!
Every other one leave a drop and I shall
leave a mark, like this - in one or two hearts...
What more than that to seek from the world? "
The Fate stayed there for a while and looked upon him
and thought - "I shall not take his soul"
And left the man alone
but his way never even hint "
NicolovsVideo wow. Pretty deep. I had to read it a few times to really get it lol. That could just be because I'm slow though. Thanks for sharing that Nico! Always good to hear from you Bro.
Every second of this video is a testament to what a smart and dedicated filmmaker you are man. Not only was it honest and informative, it was emotionally resonant.
Well effing done!
Eric Houstoun Thank you Eric =)
This needs to be uploaded to Vimeo and put on Staff Picks
Patrick Kiel Ha thank you for the support Kiel.
I watched this video shortly after it came out and it was really encouraging. Soon I will begin my second term in the first semester of film school. Thank you Darious!
Feel ya bro same goes for us independent hobby musicians
Don't make a dime (yet) but its the passion/calling that drives us
The video itself tells a great story. Looking forward to seeing your movies
Thank you Bruh! And thanks for watching :)
I'm 16 years old and hearing this speaks to me a lot my ww2 film has cost me $670.00 plus food and gas for transportation and at the end of every shoot I think this will never happen or this sucks but after I spend a few hours editting I fell better.

I watched this week's ago and shared it now I'm back and this time in tears. Someone gets it! It's what we do, who we are!
Thank you Darious you are a God send.
Outsiders don't really understand all the hard work that goes into even the smallest production. #creativeminds
ALPHAFLEX Ha so true. Many people don't understand how much work goes into it!
No-one cares how much work it was. Not interested. Don't give a damn. All they care about is what it is they're watching.
I'm just getting into videography, and this is honestly the most inspiring thing that I have ever seen. It's been a lifelong passion of mine, so it was nice to see this! Thank you so much
Spot on!
BeyondSlowMotion ;)
This made me cry...thank you. Thank you for your words, thank you for your hard work. You are extraordinarily talented, but the fact that you choose to give back just makes you even greater.
Well done sir!!
***** thank you Jayce!
My hats off to you D...... This is my favorite of all I’ve seen you do bruh. It hits home TOTALLY Authentic and heart felt. Thanks doc.
Hey thanks man, this is encouraging.
I've used many of your videos in my high school classroom over the years. I've not seen this one until today. I love it. This is exactly what I was looking for to get my students thinking differently about cinema and their relationship with it.
51 dislikes,who are they
I dunno lol.
Vamsi Krishna Trolls, no doubt!
Vamsi Krishna Michael Bay probably pushed that button like 20 times.
If you push the button more than once, it won't record another like. It will unlike it.
Najja Foluke You must be very fun at parties.
This is one of my favorite video because it speaks volume about the reality of what filmmaking is all about. most people don't realize that amount of blood, sweat and tears that goes into making a film or the sacrifice you have to make. keep up the good work brother, and keep inspiring others to go after their dreams.
Well done, well said... it's a calling...
Impressive !!! This 4 minute video is a perfect example of what it takes to make a successful film. HEART. Not success measured by money, fame or by critics, but by taking a concept, a thought and turning into something tangible. Darious fantastic testament to the creative process.
Subbed. This is awesome. Great work.
nice to hear a story about a dream that's still striving.. this is what's real to me. God bless your crew and give his awesome presence in your lives.
After watching your videos for days, I feel like I know you. Wanna come over for dinner?
Sure. What are we having lol
+D4Darious I don't know, but if you're ever heading to Indiana, holla at me. I'd be interested in picking your brain.
oooo, i see the hannibal lecter in you
This rings so true.
1001Hobbies Hahaha thank for sharing your thoughts 1001. Well articulated. We can all relate!
All men dream, but not equally. the dreamers of the night dream in the dusty recesses of their minds wake up to see that it was vanity. But the dreamers of the day are dangerous men for they act upon their dreams with open eyes. - T. E. Lawrence
8 Films Beautiful!
Wow...very powerful!! Whomever dislikes this video is obviously not a filmmaker...I would even go as far as saying that they are haters. Kudos to you and your crew Darious!!
Right on point. Everything is perfect until you hit the record button
nice antithetic aphorism
Way to go sir, I applaud you. We must fight on!
Michael Su Thank you Michael. It's all about the journey =)
Damn..
All I can say after watching this is damn...
Too good.
Watching this on repeat many.... many times.
Best video on UA-cam
If i was to ever quit Film Making and ran into this video, i'd instantly pick my camera back up. Inspiring truth. Darious, you my friend are a Genius.
Wilvert Telfo Thank you Wilvert. Don't put the camera down though lol.
made me cry .
karanveer singh Hopefully tears of joy lol. Not sadness.
D4Darious yes of course the joy. we make them because we live them .
I literally applauded this video in my empty room.
Inspiring, and thoughful !
I'm so glad that I found your channel !
You better have something to fall back on if you're gonna Max out credit cards.
***** Always a good idea =) sometimes you don't get that option though.
yeah but instead of going to film school or studying something film related, I did economics, about to graduate this June, I hate the subject but having reassurance is something people might need to persist in film making.
You are an inspiration to budding filmmakers everywhere, never give up.
If it was easy everybody would do it.
Very cynical perspective though....challenges should be seen as mere hurdles to the end goal, which makes it more rewarding.
Ando Servis my thoughts exactly
Ando Servis very true, how I look at it too.
Ando Servis I can't upvote this comment enough.
I agree with every single phrase. It couldn't be more real!
Gracjan Gornig Needed to be said ;) Thanks for commenting Gracjan.
I literally have to watch something from you everyday to keep me motivated and inspired to push through. You are a powerhouse of inspiration darious ! Keep pushing though the struggle
Please never ever delete this video, it's my favorite. ❤️
Love this video, its great and expresses just what filmmaking is! Well done!
I'm half way through my Film Production BA Hons degree at university, and I needed to see this video! I'll be showing it to others as well. You hit the nail on the head. Great work as usual, man. Keep it up!
"It may not be perfect but this is what we did !" You are echoing my feelings. Thanks for sharing.
I am watching this video for the 4th time in a row!
I just completed my film
All the emotions I went through for the past one year combined in a single video..
Thanks.
Pratik Mathur Congratulations Pratrik! That's an accomplishment =)
literally am on tears. its what i felt but your presentation of that feeling is beautiful.
You couldn't have said it any better than that brother. Filmmaking will always be a calling and a passion for people like us. Great video.
This is terrific man and so inspiring! I hadn’t made a film in over six years and I kept ignoring the calling but I’m finally getting back into it. It’s never too late. Thanks for this!
ITS THE LIFE WE CHOSE ❤️ at some points it is hard but it has never failed to be lovely
Excellent! Every thing that goes through my head as I continue to write film you covered in a brilliant, poetic, almost like a rap-artist song, I think we push on because if we give up our passion (in any field, but as artist even more) If we give up OUR PASSION we die.
Jorge Prieto Very true!
I felt so seen watching this, thank you
