    This is another foundational lesson for folks learning the banjo. We'll learn the classic tune "Boil Dem Cabbage Down" while exposing the forward roll for what it really is! I have 3 variations of the forward roll that will keep you brain from forming bad habits and misconceptions about the roll. Also included are 3 speeds of mp3 rhythm tracks!

    Hey Ben, your tablature in Banjo 104 on the D7 chord does'nt match the tablature. Honest mistake. I'm brand new to playing banjo, really the first time playing any instrument. I really enjoy watching your video lessons.

    This is so cool.. Its something Ive been having trouble with.. Coordinating my left hand with plucking strings with my right.. When to put the left fingers down (and how hard) and when to pluck those strings..
    Im saving this exercise and trying this out later.. Im in bed and the house is asleep.. I cant wait to annoy the neighbours with this.. Thanks so much Ben..

    I really appreciated your explanation around minutes 6:00 & 7:00 of the counting and using a partial roll to keep time.... I've been a guitar fingerpicker for 40 years and frail banjo a bit but have always been mystified by the Scruggs style. No other UA-cam teacher made the light come on for me like you did. Thanks Ben.

    You should teach "Studebaker" by Kenny Smith for all three instruments!

    is your tab not coordinated with the video. I am not sure about how to play the D7. you are showing index finger on 2nd fret, 2nd string and middle finger on2nd fret of 3rd string. is your tab different. great lesson sir.

    • @BanjoBen
      @BanjoBen  4 роки тому

      The tab is correct, sir. Thank you! You only need to play the D7 in this instance with the middle finger on the 3rd string, but I encourage to go ahead and practice putting down your index on the 2nd string, 1st fret.

    Great lesson foe beginners. One question: Why not call the 2 notes at the start of each measure the partial forward roll?

  • @sirgalah561
    @sirgalah561 4 роки тому

    Is that fourth measure right.. Youve got two fingers down on the fretboard but the tabs are only showing one or am I reading that wrong

      I think he is playing a d7 chord, although the tab doesn't indicate it. Its probably good practice to play the whole chord

    Was that not a forward backward roll at the start of the video. ??

      Howdy! No, only forward rolls that start on various fingers.

      If you want to you can, but most rolls don't incorporate all the strings.

    D7 Tab Is incorrect. B string should have a 1 on it.

    • @BanjoBen
      @BanjoBen  5 років тому +2

      We don't play the B string in this lesson so it can't have a 1 on it, but yes, a full D7 chord would (if that's what I was teaching, but I'm not). Thanks.
