Another waste of time banjo lesson if you can call it a lesson . Worst teacher on the banjo I wish your videos would stop coming up Never learn anything from you or your channel !
These are the type to short cuts/ideas we all need to see. Sometimes we can over complicate the banjo. As we learn it is nice to be able to join a jam session and contribute using a few of these ideas versus tapping our shoes saying some day I play! Nice work Jim!
Thanks Jim. This is great! I finished the first 10 lessons, which I'm still going over and I came across this video which fits right along with everything you have been teaching. This is really great! You are the best! Thank you for sharing your love for the banjo and enabling me to grow in my love for the banjo too! ❤
Jimbo, this is the good stuff. This is exactly what beginners who know a few breaks and want to start jamming need to hear. Love it. It's also excellent advice for playing great banjo backup.
Hey Jim, This is great!, Always puzzled about how experienced banjo players were able to just jump into a song they never learned. This video is the KEY!!. Thanks so much!.
wow i know the last comment in the video was "it probably wasn't a huge breakthrough breakthrough" however this has taken a lot of repetitive cords and hours of picking and showed how they can be brought together. thanks for the content here on youtube. in a weird way i feel like the lessons are in person because you talk normal and honest. im still working my way through the beginner lessons at the moment. really enjoying the experience, especially because this is my first instrument iv ever tried to learn. keep up the good work!
Excellent analysis Jim. Really eye-opening. Most of the important notes especially in a Bluegrass song are going to be chord tones and if we know how to deal with each of those we are halfway home
You have really helped me through so much. I had never played a banjo up until a few months ago and you have really helped me and you are inspirational. Thank you from England. 😊
Great video! About a year ago I started playing at jams and playing at small gigs with a little band and this is the exact method I use to get through many breaks. And basically each time I play a different gig I try to find one or two more melody notes to make it better.
Hi Jim , from UK . Your lessons are inspirational! I had tried for a couple of years to learn “Home Sweet Home” with no success.. I followed your superb tuition and mastered it within two weeks !11 amazing . Thank you Jim 👍😎🪕
Glad a friend mentioned you! It helps me get a little confidence boost, listening to your thoughts on it. I am an uber beginner and was pretty intimidated when I started last week. Liked and Subscribed. :-)
Thanks Jim this is a really great video, rather than just memorizing songs this lesson gives me the chance to actually jam with a guitar player and just make it up as I go along. I find this type of teaching really boosts my confidence and improves my righthand picking.. you're an excellent teacher.. I have recommended your lessons to other novice banjo players that I've met.
Jim Pankey is the Mr. Miagi of Banjo playing. You wanna play a new song, Wax on, Wax off. Need a good break, paint the fence. Use what you know, he says. Brilliant!!
Thank you Jim! I have played off and on for years. All your video’s really helped me progress. A song I would like to learn is Foggy Mountain Top. Thanks again you are a great teacher.
Thank you! This is great information. I had sort of figured this out as I tried to learn new songs by ear but didn't understand what I was doing. With your explanation now I have the tools to develop a song.
Just getting started with banjo and injoying it. Got to say its harder than it looks.Your videos are great. Your a talented player and a good teacher. Wish I could take direct lessons from you.
Hi Jim I just want to say thanks for all your videos, I never would of learned to play without them! I've been struggling to find a version of wild mountain thyme that i can wrap my head around and this video has inspired me to try and figure something out on my own! Thanks again and slàinte mhath from Scotland.
Jim thank you so much ,you have helped me go from ,shouldn’t even spell Banjo to being able to play a few songs and I’m growing everyday with your help.thank you for doing what you do.
Boy Jim I could really use anything to learn to play Banjo even if it takes cheating!! Lol I’m still learning & struggling. L😅ve watching you & your videos. Thanks a bunch keep ‘em coming!
Good stuff, Jim! I've been meaning to tell you that I have a set of Dunlop .025 that made excellent pickey picks. I tried the Earnie Ball, I liked them, but they were just too thin for me. I'm a jeweler, so I took them to work with me and fixed them right up. They work nice with those white Tusque thumb picks. I have a blue chip that I use with my dobro, but I kept banging the head too much, so I opted to try the Tusque and I really like them .
I made a set or two of pointy picks from other picks, but I think for me, it's more about having the lighter gauge than it is the point. Whatever the reason I guess I'm stuck with the EBs.
Thanks again Jim. I really only jam with my brothers a couple times a year when we all get together but it’s fun to start learning the banjo and bring that into the mix because they are such great guitar players and I always feel inadequate. And it’s helped with my finger picking. Gotta go work on my tags !!! Later Gator
Hey Jim, Thank You! Are there any videos out there where you just played along in a jam session with a song, like you described? Love to watch! Thanks again
Great lessons Jim! Made sense to comment on the most recent video. I'm currently learning cripple creek. Can anyone clear up for me how many time I play through the low part then high from lesson 4
Excellent concept and ideas! Probably would be a plus to demonstrate at least three different tag licks to go along with this lesson too, as they can treat the ear to even more of a feeling that its "different".
I’m a fiddle player and have stood across from a bunch of banjo pickers at jams here in NC watching their playing. It seems like alot are doing just this.
Been trying to bluegrassify a folk tune a couple of friends want me to learn on banjo and found this really helpful! Thank you so much! Do you have any tips for playing scruggs style in 3/4 btw?
Happy to help! I don’t have a lot out here for 3/4, but you should be able to pull some ideas from here: All the Good Times are Past and Gone - Walk Through and Demo ua-cam.com/video/JKaPPz9hw1o/v-deo.html
Hey Jim what roll are you playing for all of these, I can't tell? I'm just starting to play and would love to just get this down so I could just play background with the guys jamming here. I should have picked an easier instrument to play but I love banjos. ;-) Greetings from Florida!
Another waste of time banjo lesson if you can call it a lesson . Worst teacher on the banjo
I wish your videos would stop coming up
Never learn anything from you or your channel !
Thanks for watching and helping my channel! You’re the bestest.
The problem must be you. Thanks Jim for one more nice video! Greetings from Brazil!
Skill issue my friend. Pankey is THE MAN, i’ve gone from never playing banjo a week ago to 5 songs. ❤
Just fixed my banjo that’s been sitting stringless in the corner for a decade… yeah, it’s helpful!
Glad I could help
You are the BEST trainer !!!! I got a Banjo 40 years ago and pulled it out again after I found you. Now I'm Playing with JOY !!!! Thankyou !!!! :)
Glad I could help you get back to playing!
thanks Jim - luvit - am an 86 year old beginner - slow going but staying with it - truly enjoy your tutorials - keep em coming
Awesome! Glad I can help.
Thanks Jim. I’ve been fascinated with clawhammer since i saw your country blues clip 17 years ago. Your my hero.

Huge breakthrough to say the least!! Thanks Jim!!
Great!
Gee thanks Jim for posting this! You take a lot of the mystery out of learning the banjo. You make it easy to understand. 👍
You're welcome!
I play banjo in a rock cover band. The idea of "chasing the melody note" is incredibly helpful. Thanks!
Glad it was helpful 😊

By the way what is your definition of a break ?
A break is when it’s your turn in the song to pick the melody
@@JimPankey Thank you . As you can see I will be dead and gone before I can snatch the pebble from your hand 🤣
Good stuff..... now if I can remember anything at the jams 🎼
You can do it!
Jim, great stuff as always. You're like the Bob Ross of Banjo 😀...PBS should give you a show and call it the Joy of Banjo! 🪕
Thanks so much 🎨🖌️🖼️
I'm starting to be able to play some that actually sounds like playing thanks Jim

Hey Jim, can you teach Johnny Horton's "North to Alaska"? I've lived up here 24 years, and it would be great to play to my friends!
Can you do a cord arrangement for the song rich men north of Richmond.that would be beautiful.
Always good

I’ve not owned a Gibson banjo in a very long time. As for Deering, it would depend on the model.
