It's straight-up, hot FUNK, pure and simple, with some jazzy inflections via the horns and guitar. But, yeah, it's essentially funk with some hot sauce!
I wore the Love Symbol CD out . This track and Love 2 the 9s was on repeat.
It also holds the record (and by some margin) for the most bleeps/edits required because of the language for a commercially released single. Seems that was too much for the US, where it only reached Number 66 on the Billboard 100 - here in the UK, it got all the way to Number 4! ;-)

If you really want to experience something of the highest level of instrumentals and arrangement, there’s no album in his catalog quite like The Rainbow Children.
It is a highly divisive album, as he had just converted to be a Jehovah Witness and that played a part alienating much of his audience.
It remains a highly misunderstood but often cited masterwork in his later career. The virtuosity he displays is remarkable and mature.
He creates a musical smorgasbord of jazz fusion, Neo Soul, Funk, Gospel, Psychedelia, Prog rock and even some musical theater.
Truly an Afrofuturist masterpiece by an ever evolving artist, musician and human.
It’s also the introduction of one of his and the world’s greatest drummers in the late John Blackwell.
This is the first album he released again as Prince, after changing his name to his Love Symbol for 7 years during his battle with his former label, who owned his legal birth name until the year 2000.
The also owned his master recordings until he got them back in 2014. Almost 20 years after their dispute started.
He covers themes of race and identity on this album not just the daffy religion and mysticism.
The narration may bump for you but stick to the music.
It’s not an album of single songs. Needs to be listened to as an album in the order he presented it.
This album wasn’t released on a major label. Mostly through a small jazz label and his own Paisley Park label.
Don’t listen to those who steer you away if any. Make up your own mind and tell them to mind theirs.
