The Panguna Mine commenced production in 1972, as the world’s largest copper mine. The operation closed 17 years later amid a prolonged campaign of sabotage by the Bougainville Revolutionary Army, stemming from social, environmental, and economic issues catalyzed by the mine.

There were no environmental concerns that i was aware of. It was all economic. I lived there from 1975 to 1982.

Though perhaps not so wonderful an island after the start of the 10 year long Bougainville Civil War in 1988, as it was the most violent conflict in Pacific Oceania since the Second World War.

The public buildings, businesses and hospital of Arawa were damaged/destroyed but most of the houses & accommodation appear to be still intact, unlike Panguna where most things were destroyed. I think the capital was moved to Buka to limit the power of the aggressive local tribes. The troubles were caused by greed and racism not environmental damage.

That's bs. Solomon's islands was not Solomon's real gold islands. Another fake story.
