The ending is more shocking if you lived during the 70’s and early 80’s because of the daily concern about nuclear war. The US and the Soviets really were on the brink of nuclear war during those times which added to this ending.

@@FuhqEwe Not that hard to say since there is half a country fighting with weaponry the US has given them that can strike into RU now.
If something comes flying in on purpose or accident and hits RU's strategic command and control, they already stated they'd retaliate.
Everyone also seemed to memory hole the RU nuclear subs playing war games off Cuba not so long ago.

If you noticed Addie, there are three distinct classes within the Apes community - the Gorillas represents the warrior class - the military, the Chimpanzees representing the intellectual class - the explorers/the scientists & the Orangutans representing the judicial/administrative class - the government.

What's even more interesting from a psychological standpoint is the fact that during breaks in filming, the extras would socialize by their ape designation, even if they personally knew someone who wasn't. It just shows that we, as humans, are tribal, even at a subconscious level.

Always found it interesting that during the filming of this film, Charlton Heston noted “an instinctive segregation on the set. Not only would the apes eat together, but the chimpanzees ate with the chimpanzees, the gorillas ate with the gorillas, the orangutans ate with the orangutans, and the humans would eat off by themselves. It was quite spooky.” HOw much does that tell us about society even now?

Good reaction to this sci-fi classic Addie....I hope you continue the rest of the Apes films in the original timeline, they are...
*Beneath The Planet Of The Apes (1970)
*Escape From The Planet Of The Apes (1971)
*Conquest Of The Planet Of The Apes (1972) (there are two versions of this film - The Theatrical Cut & Unrated Alternate Cut - with a different opening, a different ending, and other scenes that were changed...The reason for the changes was because this was intened on being the final film in the Apes series & didn't leave any openings for any possible sequels and due to poor test screenings of patrons at the time saying that the unrated alternate cut was too dark & violent...Now, personally I recommend the theatrical cut as the best & the one you should watch first...but the Unrated Alternate Cut is also an interesting watch as well to see what was changed overall).
*Battle For The Planet Of The Apes (1973) (there are two versions of this film - The Theatrical Cut & The Extended Cut...due to financial problems with the studio 20th Century Fox at the time, the film was heavily edited by the studio themselves to make it under 86 minutes, against the wishes of the producer Arthur P. Jacobs & director J. Lee Thompson. The shorter runtime would allow extra showing per day in the theaters...The full 96 minutes Extended Cut is the version that the producer and director intened before all the studio edits, that they both weren't involved with and, in my own opinion, the extended cut better flows/connects the film to the rest of the films within the franchise).
In 2001 Tim Burton remade Planet Of The Apes - with Mark Wahlberg, Tim Roth and a cameo by Charlton Heston. It is a stand alone film and is ok movie but is very underrated in my own opinion.
The Andy Serkis Apes films (which acts as soft reboots and prequels to the orginal Apes films) are...
*Rise Of The Planet Of The Apes (2011)
*Dawn Of The Planet Of The Apes (2014)
*War For The Planet Of The Apes (2017)
    And recently...
*Kingdom Of The Planet Of The Apes (2024)
They're all good & worth watching in my opinion....
Also, if you haven't got your fill of Apes yet there was also a short lived live-action & short lived animated TV series of The Planet Of Apes that are both entertaining as well.

Rod Serling came up with the idea for the ending. But the social commentary in the film was NOT written by Serling. He was actually not responsible for the finished script. When he adapted the novel, his treatment was a very faithful adaptation, but it was too expensive to film. The book was very different, it was an advanced ape society set in a NYC-like metropolis. So, the other writer Michael Wilson (who's considered one of greatest screenwriters of all time) was brought in to scale down the story to a primitive ape society, which of course changed the whole theme of the story with apes living in a dogmatic society rather than a technologically progressive one. The whole story of Taylor being persecuted by this religious ape cult was based on Wilson's own experiences when he was blacklisted in Hollywood for his political views. The characters' names changed, all the dialogue was Michael Wilson's, the themes, the overall plot, the philosophical discussions, the situations etc. are all Michael Wilson. Even Serling credited 95% of the finished script to Wilson and said it wasn't really his movie. But the studio wanted to honor him for his contributions. The only thing really credited to Serling was the idea for the ending, which he used in a previous Twilight Zone episode. Although, the reveal of the Statue of Liberty was different in Serling's script. It was not the "You blew it up, D you all to H" moment as written in the film.

    2) Look at Taylor's face while Cornelius reads the 29th scroll. He knows these words could've come from himself only a short time ago. He's stunned.
    3) Also, as far as the ending, the quote from Einstein I think applies: "I know not with what weapons World War III will be fought, but World War IV will be fought with sticks and stones".

Great points regarding the irony and inner conflict of Taylor. He finds himself as the reluctant defender of mankind against the ideology of Dr. Zaius & the 29th scroll. Just thinking about it again really geeks me out at the juxtaposition presented in the epilogue of the 5th original movie (Battle). WOW, this franchise was thought provoking on so many levels. It's a shame that the poor 2nd movie (Beneath) chased away so many would-be franchise fans.

At the time of writing it, Beneath was intended to be nothing more than a cash grab end of the franchise.
There is still some merit in "Beneath", especially in the concepts that were retroactively developed. As a stand alone, it added some social commentary along with the sci fi concepts.
It just simply wasn't presented well IMO. Too many weakly written "McGuffins" to drive the plot points from "A" to "B" to "C". Some weak attempts solely to "shock the audience" as well.
