Me too. Saw it on TV in the 70’s as a little kid and was totally freaked out by it. Especially the ending!
Co-written by Rod Serling, creator of The Twilight Zone, which accounts for its literacy and cleverness.
Most of Serling’s script was removed, He was too stuck with the book’s version of Ape culture making it take place in a 20th century world with modern technology like TVs and radios, Jeeps and helicopters and modern cities and architecture.
i think i would agree more with Sterling’s vision…

It came from a novel. Screenplay was co-written.
Dawn, four sequels followed the original film from 1970 to 1973: Beneath the Planet of the Apes, Escape from the Planet of the Apes, Conquest of the Planet of the Apes, and Battle for the Planet of the Apes. They did not approach the critical acclaim of the original, but were commercially successful, spawning a live-action television series in 1974 and an animated series in 1975.

Not a huge fan of Beneath, but I personally highly recommend Escape and Conquest. Battle is okay, but you can definitely tell that the budget has been massively reduced.
And when you finish the original 5 movies there is also the Tim Burton remake which is interesting but not a must see though it has an interesting angle on time travel. Then there was the reboot that started in 2011 with 3 films so far which are very good featuring Andy Serkis who did Gollum as the main character. And just for completeness there was a Saturday morning cartoon series that I remember watching as a kid.
@@DawnMarieX there are also really great prequels that just came out starting with Rise of the Planet of the Apes that are as good as the first film.
Apes are CGI now not people in make up. Andy Serkis plays the main Ape In The prequels.
Kind of amazing how much charisma Cornelius, Zira, and Zaius manage to have inside those masks. You don't forget these characters.
Technically prosthetics. It took hours in makeup to get them ready.
They tried masks in early tests, but weren't realistic and couldn't show emotion. Apes in background shots were given masks for time and budget purposes.
Trivia note. Heston was one of the big bosses in the Screen Actors Guild. After the movie he had it written into contracts that actors would get paid for their time getting ready when extra wardrobe or makeup was needed.
I will always prefer practical effects and prosthetics

Roddy McDowell comes out in Fright Night from 1984. It's a vampire cult classic.
Charlton Heston comes out in two other films soon after Planet of the Apes that I really like, Solyent Green and The Omega Man. If you ever plan to see Solyent Green, don't let anyone ruin the plot for you.
I will say that Solyent Green and The Omega Man have a very '70s feel and look to them.

Between Planet Of The Apes, The Ten Commandments, and Ben-Hur, Charlton Heston said he spent most of his acting career without needing trousers.
Roddy McDowall would accept almost any role and always gave it his best. 271 acting credits 1938-2001.

You called it right from the start that it was Earth. I remember seeing it as a young person (AGES ago!!) and my mind being blown that it was Earth. Really glad you loved this movie. Not all the Planet of the Apes movies are good. I actually can't remember the other ones that were done back in the 70's. There's at least one (maybe two?) much newer Planet of the Apes movies that were done. This one is the classic though - and that line "get your paws off of me you damned, dirty ape!" - is a classic movie line.
At the time Planet of the Apes was made, it was a lot more common to see sci-fi movies and TV shows in which aliens looked totally human and spoke English, so the twist ending might have felt less obvious in '68. The book upon which this movie is based actually is set on an alien planet, but they changed it for the film.
The author also penned "Bridge On The River Kwai."
Rod Serling wrote multiple drafts, the first bunch of which was much closer to the book (on another planet). Along the way, he stumbled on a way to short-circuit the books ending by shifting the story to future earth from the start!
I notice that most people now look for/suspect Twists in almost every movie because they've become so common. That didn't start until the 80s.
Also we now know how few planets are Earth-Like.

The original POTA movie is a classic. I like how Dawn initially thought she would hate it, and then she ended up realising how good it is.

I love this movie! When they were filming the scene where Taylor breaks out of his cell, Charlton Heston actually had the flu, and when he tells the apes, "take your stinking paws off me", his voice was very hoarse because of his flu! It worked really well because Taylor's throat was still healing.

This is some good goofy classic sci-fi fun. Silly ape masks, Charlton Heston screaming and over-acting wildly, and that ending! 🤣🤣🤣

Whoever got Dawn to actually watch this before Spaceballs, thank you cause no one who watched Spaceballs ever saw all the reference movies. Having to see one of the funniest scenes in Spaceballs be met with "What is this?" always bothered me.

The talking apes in the film had foam pieces attached to their mouths, eyebrows and noses and blended with the skin tone of gorilla, chimp and orangutan. The separate pieces allowed some movement in the face to express emotions and talking. The extras wore very excellent masks with a velcro strip in the back covered by the fake hair. My mom worked for 20th Century Fox that year and brought home 3 ape masks. They were terrifyingly realistic due to how well the eyes looked through the mask. I was 15 and my bud Steve and I did a little bit of eye blending (matching skin with ape color) and wore the masks as we ran through Westwood Village terrifying the Saturday night populace.
Dawn, so glad you enjoyed this movie. Like Michael Walsh, I too was 8 years old when this came out. It has always been one of my favourites. The ape make up was cutting edge and I think won an oscar at the time. The chimpanzee, Cornelius, was played by Roddy MacDowell. He's one of those actors that I am always happy to see on screen. Pretty much all the apes with speaking parts were Shakespearean trained. They felt their skills would help them act and project their voices through the heavy make up. The other Ape movies are enjoyable too, but nothing is quite as good as the original. And here's another vote for Soylent Green and The Omega Man. There was a lot of great Science Fiction in the late 60s and early 70s.
"Colossus the Forbin Project" and "The Andromeda strain". 2 more good 70's Sci Fi movies from that era. Colossus staring Eric Braeden, the Bad guy in "Escape".
It came from a book written in the early 1960's. In 1968 it was rated R, first re-release was PG and the next was G.
I'm so happy that you enjoyed it. Please watch the sequels. You will get your answers mostly from the 3 movie. But they are all one story.
There are 5 original apes movies in the original timeline...

As an adult watching the movie, the clues were all there that it was earth, but as a little kid, my jaw dropped when I saw the Statue of Liberty. The reason the actors were always making facial expressions was that in the makeup test the prosthetic masks looked more realistic when they were in motion as opposed to being stationary. Still, one of my favorite films, and you should definitely check out the original sequels and the remakes.
John Chambers' makeup for this was groundbreaking, and won many awards. For 1968 it was unprecedented. There was a T-shaped, paper-thin latex appliance attached to nose and forehead with spirit gum, and separate pieces for the cheeks, chin, and various sections of hair. It took them something like five hours in the makeup chair to put the makeup on each day! Some actors were able to tolerate that better than others. I've used spirit gum which preceded liquid latex (back then, it hardened and they didn't have a way to keep it liquid) and it is NOT fun. It's kind of like having turps on your face and has to be removed with a different chemical.
Now that you've seen this one, you need to watch the sequels! :-D (Surprise, you were right!)

Unfortunately, sequels were a very new business, and the studios gave them less money for each one instead of more or the same amount, even though the films all made HUGE profits for Fox. You can really tell with Battle--it looks pretty cheaply-made, and even though it has an "epic" battle, you can tell they're keeping the numbers down by using a lot of close shots, repeated shots, etc. But they're all worth watching at least once!
Chambers was the man who arranged the movie production company for Argo- the real life rescue of Americans from Iran during the hostage crisis. The prop artwork was done by Jack Kirby- the comic book artist who co created the Fantastic Four, Thor, the X-men and Captain America.
Conquest (the only R-rated apes movie) was very good in its own way.
Hey, Dawm! You really should do the entire 5 movie series. I've only seen a few reaction channels do this one, but none have actually tackled the other 4 movies in the series. There is also a documentary called "Behind the Planet of the Apes", which tells how this 5 movie story was made. I'll grant you, this IS the "best" one of the original series, however, its 4 sequels do tell an overall story that is well worth watching. The thing is, despite the success of this movie, and each of its sequels, the movie studio was in dire financial straits, so they kept cutting the budget for each movie going forward. I was barely a year old when this movie was released, so I didn't have the opportunity to see it on the "big screen". However, It, along with 2 of the sequels was shown on television in 1975 (I believe), and I was immediately hooked on it. The other two sequels were shown on TV later, and a very short lived television series (which doesn't fit the timeline for this series of movies) was also broadcast over network television. I still have some of the toys and bubblegum cards for both the series and the movies. I also have the 5 movie set (which also includes the documentary) on a 6 DVD package that was bought for me one Father's Day. The 2001 "Mark Wahlberg"/"Tim Burton" movie is completely separate from this 5 movie story, however, the more recent Trilogy IS loosely related to the original movies, and can even be used as the "original timeline" setting up the story of this set of movies. If you decide to check them all out, I'll help fill in the missing pieces (just like I do with Star Wars).
At the time (1968), this movie literally pioneered movie makeup for science fiction movies. Over the course of time, the makeup work became a bit easier, although "extras" could be seen wearing pullover masks that didn't look nearly as good as the "actor specific" appliances.
Again, I really hope you do the entire series.
Lastly, if you have questions that I can answer without posting spoilers for the other 4 movies in this set, I will edit this comment to reflect that.
Edit: 12:37 - They weren't masks until the sequels. Plaster heads of the actors were made in order to create "appliances" specific to each actor. Pretty much every makeup artist in Hollywood worked on this movie at the time, because there were so many. John Chambers (head of the makeup department) won an Academy Award for the makeup work done in this movie.
13:07 - "Guild him" means basically to give him a vasectomy, except the hard way. Because they only have rudimentary surgical abilities, they will pretty much just remove his testicles. Pretty much the same that is done with dogs and cats these days.
14:10 - Yeah, one of the few "gaffs" in this movie. They hired extras to be the museum pieces so that they would look as realistic as possible. The downside to that is that movements were caught on camera. Of course, video tapes for home use was unheard of, only television stations had them. DVDs, streaming digital media, etc was all decades away, and not even thought of at the time. So, if you didn't see a movie in the theaters, the only chance you would have to see it would be on broadcast television. "Home Video" was well over a decade and a half away.
14:22 - Yeah, that was his other companion... the one shot in the back of the neck/head. Dodge, I believe his name was. And yeah, again, the movement wasn't meant to be caught on camera.
14:40 - This line is iconic. What's funny is that Charleton Heston was sick the day it was shot, so his gruff voice was actually natural. It was due to his illness, but came across perfectly as someone recovering from throat surgery.
16:08 - Yeah, Dr. Zaius and his team gave Landon a lobotomy. They literally cut out his frontal lobes, where a human's "personality" is kept in the brain. I'll talk more about Zaius later on.
16:45 - Yeah, little things like that were slipped in wherever they could, while not distracting from the plot.
21:11 - Well, since you've watched this movie anyway..... Dr. Zaius knows the actual truth about how humans were the dominant species and nearly destroyed themselves, while allowing Apes to become the dominant species of the planet. While it's a long story that I won't get into, it's best if you watch the other movies to learn how this happened. Again, I think the new Trilogy was the ORIGINAL timeline of events, as it does show the Icarus (Taylor's ship) launching into space (minor spoiler) in the background of the overall story. While Taylor and his crew landing creates a new timeline, which you can follow throughout the original 5 movies.
Zaius is the "Chief Defender of the Faith". Meaning that he guards the secrets of how apes became the dominant species of the planet. He knows full well that humans had reached a level of technology that allowed them to pretty much destroy themselves. His life's goal is to ensure that Apes shun that kind of technology, and are never capable of destroying themselves.
21:35 - Except they aren't. Listen carefully to the verse about to be read. There isn't an untrue word in it.
24:40 - There are 5 movies in this set: Planet of the Apes, Beneath the Planet of the Apes, Escape from the Planet of the Apes, Conquest of the Planet of the Apes, and Battle for the Planet of the Apes. There is a one season TV show titled Planet of the Apes (which also stars Roddy McDowell, a cartoon series which isn't considered "canon" but is actually closer to the source material (a novel by Pierre Boulle than any of the live action stuff), then we get to the Mark Wahlberg remake of Planet of the Apes..... which is a standalone movie. Then, we get into the trilogy, which as I said above, can be considered as the "original timeline" to the Heston/McDowell five movie series. There is a good bit of story-based evidence to support that theory, although it is never truly confirmed. There ARE a few "dates" that are off between the two. Still, if you look at the context of it all being told by someone who wasn't actually there... there's enough story links to support it being legitimate.
Wonderful info but to nitpick you said the Roddy McDowell five movie series, but as I'm sure you know technically he only starred in 4 of the 5 as he was committed to another project during Beneath and only appears in reused scenes from the first movie and was replaced with David Watson for the new scenes
There was actually another person that appeared in 4 of the 5 movies, Natalie Trundy, who played 3 different characters vs. Roddy McDowall's 2. She was the wife of the producer.
The word is Geld not Guild.
"Spaceballs" contains references to several sci-fi movies, but except for "Star Wars," you don't really have to watch all of them to get the references. It's enough to know they exist. I would recommend seeing "Alien," though, because the "Spaceballs" gag referencing that one can be a bit spoiler-y.
6:55 😆😆😆😆 not sure if it's the doodles hanging out in that accent or the follow up comment when the crewmen bend down, but that was the best belly laugh I've had in ages.
I just think it's a shame that most people today see the new Apes films first. It spoils what was once one of the greatest plot twists in film history. It was certainly spoiled for you. However I am glad to see that you managed to enjoy the film nonetheless. That speaks to the craft put into it. As it happens just about every make-up artist in Hollywood worked on this film. So many that, for the opening of 2001: A Space Odyssey, that was being shot at the same time, the apes were far less convincing because they were limited for make-up artists.
Fun fact. Scientists estimate that wild Chimpanzees are about 100x more aggressive than humans.
Roddy McDowell noticed that during production, as everyone sat down for lunch, the chimps would all sit together, the orangutans all together and the gorillas all together. Each group separately.

Thanks for reacting to this one. I was eight when this came out. I cant tell you how much promotion was done and how excited we were when it came out. I had all the bubblegum cards that were sold prior to the movie premiere. I didn't understood the deeper themes, but loved the movie! "Escape from the Planet of the Apes" is the best of the 1960s/70s Apes films.
I think Escape will be Dawn's favorite of the original 5 movies.
It's one of the first movies I remember merchandising for. Every kid on my block had Planet of the Apes action figures and toys.
"Because I loath Bananas" The only line I remember from "Escape" When she "Zira" got the banana but wouldn't eat it, but finally talking to the humans with that line.
Did Dawn see Alien yet? There is as much reference to that movie in Spaceballs as there is to Planet of the Apes

There is a 2001 Tim Burton reimaging with its own twist ending which is kind of fun (no peeking!). The more dramatic remakes started in 2011.

@@DawnMarieX When you referred to people in suits, I immediately thought you would probably enjoy the new versions. They tell a similar narrative as these originals, but they use CGI in a contemporary setting, and Andy Serkis playing the lead ape Caesar. There's _Rise of the Planet of the Apes,_ _Dawn of,_ and _War for,_ with _Kingdom of_ supposed to be coming out in 2024. I've only gotten to see the first one and it's definitely not cheesy overacting 😄

"Beneath the Planet of the Apes" is the best of the sequels, imo. Kim Hunter, the actress who plays Dr. Zira, won the Best Supporting Actress Oscar playing Stella Kowalski opposite Marlon Brando's Stanley Kowalski in the 1951 film of A Streetcar Named Desire. She also starred opposite David Niven in the 1946 film, A Matter of Life and Death, written, produced and directed by Michael Powell and Emeric Pressburger. That film always ranks high among the best British films ever made.

There are five original Ape movies which were released between 1968 and 1974 (all are good fun), they tried to do a TV series in 1975, but it only lasted one season. Then there was a Tim Burton remake of this in the 2000's that got mixed reviews, and another which became a trilogy in the 20-teens where the apes were all cgi and looked like apes (not human upright apes like this.) Those are fun as well.
I feel that saying "you have to watch POTA" before you see _Spaceballs_ is an overstatement. I mean yeah there's ONE joke that only makes sense if you know the end of POTA but it's not a dealbreaker.

You have such a great sense of humor; I really enjoy watching movies with you regardless of genre. Watching you react reminds me of the great times I used to have watching tv and movies with my sisters ( I have 9) I am oldest male and since my dad was always working, I had the privilege to get to know them better and share special movies that shaped all of our lives. Thanks for the fun times and the reason to fondly remember those times.
You should check out "Inherit the Wind" 1960 , based on a true 1925 court case in Tennessee , against a teacher teaching evolution,based on Darwin. Won three oscars, Spencer Tracy, Frederic March.
Because of the time dilation effect resulting from their spacecraft traveling near the speed of light, a lot more time has passed on the Earth than for the astronauts. This is a real effect in real life, and is part of the Theory of Relativity.

What a pleasant surprise.
There were 4 sequels to this one. Then in 2001 they rebooted the series. That's why there's about 10 movies. The technology in 2001 made the visual effects (and the apes' appearance) in the rebooted movies much more realistic looking.
This is my favorite movie of all time. The social commentary was so ahead of its time and so real still to this day
The primary apes wore pieced prostec facial parts. Chin cheeks forehead nose. If memory serves, it took 4 hours to get into makeup every day.
During filming, the makeup took a couple hours at the start of the day and had to last all day, as there wasn't enough time to redo it. So the ape actors went to lunch in their makeup.
Regardless of who knew who, who had auditioned with friends, or was driving home with someone, it was quickly noticed that during the lunch breaks they would all segregate even though there was no incentive or directive to do so. Chimp actors hung out with other chimps, gorillas with gorillas, and orangutans with orangutans, as that just seemed to be the natural thing to do .
10:12 I like how it took five movies to explain a bootstrap paradox.
You have to watch the first 4 to see how the apes ended up taking over. They sped that process up in the modern version of POTA , which are brilliant in their own right.

The good news about having watched this is you're now ready to watch the recent reboot which is pretty good:

- Dawn of the Planet of the Apes (2014)
- War for the Planet of the Apes (2017)
- The Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes (2024)
An absolute classic.

Before Spaceballs the movie Alien is a MUST see.
The setting alone makes this film so enjoyable. One of my all time favourite films.
When I first saw this I just accepted that they were really on another planet. It didn't occur to me to wonder what were the odds that humans, horses, rifles, English speaking apes, and cameras would be on an alien planet. So the ending was a massive shock to me. The sequels to this movie do explain things but the quality of those movies is not up to the standard of this movie. If you want to see a series of Planet of the Apes movies that are very good, check the ones made from 2011-2017.

Gorillas - Muscle Thugs
Chimpanzees - Doctors / Technicians
Orangutans - Geniuses / Leaders.
One of the cute things movies do is poke fun at the actors. Charles Heston is supposed to be ruggedly handsome, which is why he stars in so many movies. So it's very slightly breaking the fourth wall when the lady gorilla tells him she doesn't want to kiss him because "You're so ugly."
The sound effects from the ship crashing into the lake were a combination of two things, the engines of the Jupiter 2 from Lost In Space and the atomic reactor in the batcave from the Batman tv series.
Another movie that involves time travel that is one of my favorites you should react to is The Final Countdown (1980) The U.S.S. Nimitz goes back to December 6th, 1941. It's filmed on the Nimitz.

I watched this in a drive-in theatre in 1968. I immediately fell in love with Linda Harrison (Nova). It was not to be, however, because I was only 8.
My favourites are Planet of the Knights who say Ni and Shrubbery of the Knights who say Ni.

The costumes and makeup on the apes is pretty well done considering when this film came out. Amazing film.

The first series is 5 movies released in the late 60's-early 70's. All of them are enjoyable, in my opinion.
Great film! i think reminds me of the first half of Stanley Kubrick’s “2001: A Space Odyssey” came out the same year 1968. You know which Monkees i like is the 60s rock band with the TV show! Hopefully i would love to see you react to that show someday before i leave this world…🙏🏽💙

The next one is just as intense as this one - Beneath the Planet of Apes! Some surprises there. The other sequels aren't as good but entertaining.

This was the very first feature film I’ve seen as a seven year old..and remembered being frightened by the first scene when the apes appeared on the screen…and then puzzled by the ending with lady liberty..because I would see her every day from the Brooklyn block I lived on…she would be standing right on horizon facing towards you.
After the end of the original 5 movies, there was a reboot starring Mark Wahlberg, featuring more realistic, less stylized ape makeup, actual ape behaviors; & the original novel's concept that it really is an alien planet. I like the movie; but with the most recent reboot movies, people have looked down their noses at the first reboot.
The franchise is loosely based on a French scifi novel whose title translates as Planet of the Apes. A brilliant inventor builds Earth's first starship, & sets off with a journalist friend and a pet baby chimp toward a planet I'm thinking orbits Betelgeuse. They find much what Taylor did, complete with the scarecrows & lush, forested grotto. And golden skinned (I.e., not homo sapiens) mute "people" who are completely naked, & nest in trees like some primates do.
The movie you just watched was a compromise between purists who wanted to *literally adapt the book,* with apes driving automobiles, apes piloting aircraft; & apes reproducing current human society while still conducting safaris to control the "animal" population which raids their farmland. (The scarecrows are intended to frighten the humans away from farmland & simian settlements.); ... And cost conscious studio execs who would never greenlight such a tech heavy film. They also didn't have faith that a society of intelligent apes wouldn't be laughed at, since earlier ape costumes were cartoonish & comic at best.
For your own entertainment, you might want to watch the Wahlberg film, if only to make up your own mind about its merits.

The humans in the museum were moving because it was faster and cheaper to just have actors stand still, than it was to create mannequins of them.

This is the movie that created the idea of the "statue of liberty in the sand" moment for the end of civilizations. The knowledge that for all of our technology if things went horribly wrong tomorrow even just 1000 years from now most buildings would be gone (without proper maintenance) and some "archaeologist from the future" would be sifting through ruins like we do today with ancient sites.

Before the commercial merchandising that Star Wars created and before the first summer blockbuster of Jaws there was Planet of the Apes that captured the minds of Generation X. Soundtracks o LP and 8 Trac, Halloween costumes, lunchboxes, action figures with a toy tree house, horse and wagon and gorilla accessories, tee shirts, novels, coloring books, comic books, a TV series, Saturday morning cartoon, a Tim Burton remake and a reboot movie series as well as. Japanese knockoff and a softcore spoof. The four sequels range in quality and are filled with continuity issues that would make Disney's Star Wars sequel look like Shakespeare, but the acting, cinematography, plots and concepts are worth your time. Beneath is my favorite sequel in the series with Conquest being a close second. I hope you venture deeper into the original franchise. Actors Charlton Heston, Roddy McDowall, Kim Hunter and Maurice Evans were all A List actors with nearly 400 movies between them spanning from 1939 to 2004. Other A List actors appeared in the sequels such as James Franciscus, James Gregory, Ricardo Mantalbon, Claude Atkins and 1970s rocker Paul Williams.
I love how Taylor went from hating humans, to feeling superior as a human, and then right back to damning humans.
