Enhancing Safety in Your Classic Ford Model A: Installing Seat Belts

- This video describes our process for installing lap seat belts in the Lady in Red, George’s 1930 Ford Model A Tudor Sedan. Now, it’s important to note, we are not professionals and what we are doing is making modifications for only our car. We are showing you what we decided to do, but you should exercise your own judgment about how best to install your own seat belts if you decide to do so.
If you own a Model A, then you already probably know that Model A’s did not originally come with seat belts. Today, seat belts are pretty important and its our opinion that they should be installed in every Model A for the safety of both the driver and the passengers. This car is also a Tudor, so what we do, may not work for all variations of Model A’s. The MAFCA webpage has a section called the Case for Seat Belts with some articles linked that show various ways seatbelts have been installed in different models of the Model A.

I just installed seatbelts in my 1931Coupe. Rough roads can toss you around.
GREAT!!! The front was pretty obvious with the frame cross-piece to work with. The back seat was another story. Great solution to have a reinforcing piece across the full distance to ensure that can bear load.

Nice job. Just look at those door latches. Without seatbelts, you are going to fly in any kind of impact. Also, you should replace that OSB floor with actual plywood, and put cotter pins in the rear spring bolts.
Good catch on those cotter pins. We’ve had to do a few small things like that, but we hadn’t noticed those. Thanks for watching!
That cross channel is called a hat section channel. From the end, the shape looks like a hat.

I've driven my '30 A Coupe for years without seatbelts and no real problems, although one time my driver's door did pop open while making a right turn. That can be a little embarrasisng when you have passengers. But the one main reason why I would install them is to make the car appear safer for female passengers to ride in. They always ask about seat belts, I've found.
