When I traded my old car in I said to the dealer, I've had it over 9 years and because the car was over 18 years old it had just reached the point of not being worth spending on. I was honest and said due to extensive rust I was changing my car. Mechanically it was sound . I got a fair trade in under circumstances I think. I'm very happy with my much newer car and didn't try to rip anyone off . Honesty is always best policy
Had a 2022 Focus Ecoboost 1.0T Manual as a hire car in Portugal recently and it was an absolute joy to drive. Great noise from the triple and sipped fuel.
I think that, the carpets being wet not withstanding, the smell inside the car and the windows fogging up continuously would have told the owner all was not well.

It will Be like a waterfall but once drained and dry you won’t get this issue again. There was a UA-cam video I found that showed how to do this

I have the 1.6 petrol MK3 and I had this exact problem, it took me a really long time to figure out why I was losing coolant so rapidly until I realised every time I got out of my car my feet felt slippery and I realised the carpet was completely sodden with coolant.
I've always favoured the MK2 Focus over later models. It's a damn fine car to drive, is very well made, and the Zetec petrol engines are a peach. The 1.6 Zetec is my petrol engine of choice for the Focus, it suits it well. The diesels are pretty decent too though.
The 1.6 and later 1.5 diesels are pretty reliable. I've got a 64 plate C Max Grand Titanium, which is basically a Focus Estate with an MPV body. It's got the 1.6 diesel engines, slightly newer models have the 1.5 diesel. Coming up to 10 years old in January 2025, it's done 91K on the original clutch, the only two faults were issues with the keyless ignition, which failed and meant a rewire of the system was needed (that cost £500) and a problem with the boot lock, which needed replacing. Other than that, 6 speed box, 42 -43 mpg around town, almost 50 mpg on a decent run. The only problem is I can't replace it with a newer version that's anything less than 5 years old, as they stopped making the C Max in 2019.
1.6 mark 2 drives lovely so long as you're not in a hurry to overtake something. I made mistake of getting mark 2 1.8 which has a nice engine. But gearing is shorter which means poor long distance economy and the electro hydraulic steering is replaced by electric steering. That was 1st gen electric steering and not very good. It replaced a lovely mark 1. Only kept that car a couple of years.

Hello Lee. This is Liam from Ireland. That's such a Shame about those engines. This Car looks the business, Lee. I see you still have that Peugeot 308 for Sale. I thought it would be gone by now lol. That Focus is worth fixing if it's just a few Cooling pipes. Good luck with it Lee. 🙏🙏👏👏👏👏👏👏
Ford Focus Models just went worse from the Mark 1 either by looks or it's engine, i still drive my 02 mark 1, 19 years on and still on its original clutch & gearbox, just a little rust to contend with and its done 135k miles.
I had the same on my old focus 1.0 titanium x so to solve it I got a short piece of rubber pipe over the one side of the matrix pipe then joined the matrix pipes together slipped the rubber pipe across the joint of the matrix pipe and then used hose clips on both ends of the rubber pipe job done on the cheap and worked
Back in 2012 i had the same focus which was brand new on lease it had exactly the same problem with the soaked carpet the other hidden problem is the coolent expansion tank which tend to split underneath with heat expansion and you can't see it, the only way to check is to run your hand underneath the expansion tank feeling for leaks. This problem also happens with some mk2s if it happens it gives the impression of a leaking water pump as the coolent will drip down onto the water pump 😊
The mk 2 mondeo was tge best design, if the matrix leaked it would run through a drain plug to underneath the car ,easy to change as well just take the side of the center console out and easy access.
Not sure I would buy a Focus with the Eco-Pants engine either. I would actually be happy to buy this car if it had the 1.6 petrol engine in it. It suits them best. The 1.6 TDCi Eco-netic is good too. But they need to be serviced twice as often as Ford says they should.
I've not had an issue with mine so far, wet belt due for changing next year and I'll have 3 yrs left on HP on it at that point, so hoping to come out unscathed. It's a shame because it's a really nice drive, the engines performance is really good, all they needed to do was use a timing chain or a conventional belt outside the engine
Its such a shame that the Focus is fitted with Eco Boom as it looks a nice car. I have to say I always used to buy Ford and had many happy years with plenty of them until my wife's Fiesta started to bubble with rust in the doors at 4 years old and Ford would not repair as there was no hole! in simple terms. Car only had 20K on the clock so I said that's it never again will I buy Ford and Ive not. Shame. Thanks for the great youtube videos I love watching them
Those engines are fine provided they’ve been serviced correctly. Trouble is once they’re out of the warranty period too many owners skip corners on servicing costs. The ecoboost engines won’t accept the wrong cheaper oils .
They're NOT "fine provided they've been serviced correctly". I had a 2017 Ecoboom from new. Serviced on the button with Ford approved oil every time. The belt degradation caused the oil strainer to block up and it starved the engine of oil. Complete engine failure and zero comeback. It was 5 years old and 102k miles. It was worthless.
@@mike-s8n8y It doesn't matter how many they made, it's the high percentage of that quantity that left their owners with huge bills and/or worthless cars that matters.
@@fr.mcgreer8349 it does matter how many they made , and it does matter how many failed because of owners , in your case twenty thousand miles a year , how many oil changes did it get and was it the correct oil not some alternative as someone has highlighted here , and with that mileage its classed as heavy use so needed a lot more than standard service.
An option you didn't mention could be to drop the sump and see if it needs a belt, maybe worth it for an hours work, you could then retail if you're lucky and it looks OK? I've watched your videos on wet belt woes with interest and I've been struggling to understand why some of them are fine and others are toast even at low mileage with full Ford history. Maybe I have an answer. A (reliable, honest) mechanic I know that's done several told me that main dealers often don't use the specific oil specified. He said he knows the firms that supply them and knows what they use and it's not the same branded stuff they're supposed to be using (Castrol?) but the customers are obviously oblivious and pay top money for a much cheaper alternative and are being billed for the correct oil that isn't being used. Sounds plausible? I know this engine has other issues but to be fair, if it's true then Ford are picking up the pieces the same as Joe public...

what about mk7 1.2 engine petrol i got it with 71k milage at price of 300 pound's just Quarter panel have couple of dent's do you think is god deal? thanks
A turkey of an engine, better to stick to the standard petrols, or better still, a diesel. Recently my granddaughter got a 12 plate 1.6 diesel Mk 3 estate, a nice car. Over 40 mpg and no nasty belts liable to snap, due to attack by the engine oil. Currently Ford are facing lawsuits in many other countries regarding the poor reliability of the engine. As a retired analytical chemist, I'd say it's not a good idea to have rubber in contact with oil and the products of combustion, the usual result is the weakening of the rubber and the failure of the drive belt, usually with catastrophic results.
I don’t think ecoboosts are that bad. Had two and done regular oil changes with the right oil makes a difference. Re the leak our beetle had one I couldn’t solve. It took years. Loads of forum posts. And it turned out to be a cheap Chinese screen. I sealed it and it’s been fine and dry since
Yes the fan would come in around then, on corsa's for example they come in at 108c. I would check the water pump for leaks, also they can loose coolant like this one in the footwell (the matrix leak) I would also be checking there
@carukchannel can you recommend a ford that is low on tax or do a vid , great vids by the way , I will not buy a ecoboom after watching your vids . Great vids by the way .
@carukchannel how was this ever approved?... with running costs like that you could buy a car with better power and economy and come out on top in the long run...
@@ymirfritz9989 I guess we need to consider that these days manufacturers worry about their cost not the customers cost. I have no doubt these engines are cheap and nasty to make and if they’re expensive to maintain as long as it’s out of warranty it isn’t Ford’s problem.
When someone says "Oh,my husband does that" don't believe them, 8/10 the husband will say/mention they topped it up,added a bit of water/coolant in a conversation to the wife....for sure. The wife will wanna know what's been done to the car.
Hope she wanted more than 900 and you said no as she and her husband 💯 would have known there was a problem,so after you explained all the costs to get it to retail and the possible small profit I have to ask why the heck would another dealer want it unless they won't do the wet belt or paint🤷♂️🙂

Tidy car but I’m interested to know how you’ll dry out those carpets, AND whether any electrics under those carpets has been damaged by the water. Good luck with it tho’.
I work in the trade and agree theyre absolutely f**king dreadful engines, would never own one not to mention incredibly expensive if the engine dies, the servo pump fails or turbo fails (due to being clogged with bits of belt) or even worse your brakes fail entirely (due to servo issues.) people also forgot to replace a wetbelt is 8-10 hrs labour and average of £1,250-£1,500 on a focus/fiesta & £1,400-2,000£ on a Transit 2.0L , there's several different ecoboost variants inc the DRGN engine code, the engines alone are 6k+ dealer only. don't buy one they're sh*t. we do on average probably 5-10 wetbelts a month atm and probably see 1-5 a month on a recovery truck with a dead engine weather it be a focus/fiesta/b max/c max or even transit. Heads up to anyone in the trade there's been asbestos found @ a ford Uk factory so its been temporarily shut down, our ford supplier is on average 7-14 day order for webelt kits from germany or Spain atm. it just gets worse every year and they still sell this sh*t!
Whoever you're trading it onto is not going to replace the welt belt! They'll spot the chipped paint for nothing and double your profit. I suspect you know that. 😅
Ironic that most engines that win international engine awards due to impressive tech and figures turn out to be a dogs dinner in terms of reliability. This and the prince engine. Also i auspect many others!
I worked for Ford when these were new and my company car at the time was used as a press car and featured in Fifth Gear (on UA-cam) with Plato and Needle giving it grief 😆 I got excited thinking it was ‘ACO’ but sadly think that car will be long gone by now

Little bit erect for the hand brake never heard that one before Keep it up the good work lee
“ probably a couple of trout in there” 😅 I guess sometimes all you can do is laugh….
Surprised they didn't have a Balti Chicken Air Freshener hanging from the RVM to try and throw the sent of that warm curry whiff of Ethlyne Glycol
what about mk7 1.2 engine petrol i got it with 71k milage at price of 300 pound's just Quarter panel have couple of dent's do you think is god deal? thanks
Great video
PS why do Focus door seals fall off
Crap glue 😅. I stuck mine back on with my wifes nail glue itll never come off again that stuffs brilliant 😂.
Shit engine thought in thwlast video you was buying anymore crap
Your right. Every one I look at has a door seal hanging off. Crap!
The badges seem to go funny on these as well.
£400 profit.....no brainer.....give someone else the headache
Did you get around to picking the Jag up from the auction site Lee?
Door seals are shocking on fords.
I don’t think ecoboosts are that bad. Had two and done regular oil changes with the right oil makes a difference. Re the leak our beetle had one I couldn’t solve. It took years. Loads of forum posts. And it turned out to be a cheap Chinese screen. I sealed it and it’s been fine and dry since
Hi Lee,
Are you able to tell me if any of the other manufacturers share this one litre wet-belt engine?
Thank you..
I got a ford focus and having heating issue of loosing coolant . what I identified is coolant fan start at 102 is it correct ?
Yes the fan would come in around then, on corsa's for example they come in at 108c. I would check the water pump for leaks, also they can loose coolant like this one in the footwell (the matrix leak) I would also be checking there
would you buy the 1,5 Ecoboost?
the 2,7 and 3,5 Ecoboost are in a recall in the USA iv'e heard from american dealer UA-camrs
Why is the 1.25 engines so high in road tax.
emissions are high, it’s a old fashioned engine so not the best on emissions standards. however it is pretty reliable
@carukchannel can you recommend a ford that is low on tax or do a vid , great vids by the way , I will not buy a ecoboom after watching your vids . Great vids by the way .
@@carukchannel can you recommend a first car from Ford please .
@@Furby213mk7 fiesta 1.25
lol, " a couple of trout" Lee are u related to Peter Kay?!
No sadly not 😁
£1600 to change a belt? Stellantis dealerships change wet belts for £500...
The ford belts take 9 hours to complete on the 998cc ecoboost. Very different set up to the 1.2 puretech used in the stellantis cars
@carukchannel how was this ever approved?... with running costs like that you could buy a car with better power and economy and come out on top in the long run...
Because it was never designed to be replaced it was meant to last the lifetime of the vehicles, That obviously didn't go well ! @@ymirfritz9989
@@ymirfritz9989 I guess we need to consider that these days manufacturers worry about their cost not the customers cost. I have no doubt these engines are cheap and nasty to make and if they’re expensive to maintain as long as it’s out of warranty it isn’t Ford’s problem.
Eco boost won engine of the year. Great mix of performance and economy although not as much economy as you might think. And rubbish for durability
When someone says "Oh,my husband does that" don't believe them, 8/10 the husband will say/mention they topped it up,added a bit of water/coolant in a conversation to the wife....for sure. The wife will wanna know what's been done to the car.
It's a shame about the issues with these cars because they look nicer
Ive seen cars on Auto Trader dents, trims missing etc, and the dealers are asking decent money lol.
O rings a nightmare man.
Hope she wanted more than 900 and you said no as she and her husband 💯 would have known there was a problem,so after you explained all the costs to get it to retail and the possible small profit I have to ask why the heck would another dealer want it unless they won't do the wet belt or paint🤷♂️🙂
Does anyone know if the latest Corsa have a wet belt. The older ones were chain but I believe they have moved to wet belt. Is this true ? wtf are Vauxhall doing ?
Water leak issues footwell
"A couple of trout" lol
Hi Lee, I've always had a ford car's i wouldn't buy a echo engine ford there crap , from marty in Belfast northern Ireland God bless
In and out with no grief and a nice drink out of it well done Lee....🏁👍
What’s the story on the mini ? Has it glued itself to the ramp 🙉😂😂😂
Yes 😂👍
I worked for Ford when these were new and my company car at the time was used as a press car and featured in Fifth Gear (on UA-cam) with Plato and Needle giving it grief 😆 I got excited thinking it was ‘ACO’ but sadly think that car will be long gone by now
Leaks from the back tailgate
They can, however the boot is dry & we can see the coolant dripping from the pipes to the matrix on this one
simple rule- dont buy an ecoboom
Car UK i got a 1.2 Puretech it uses its coolant throws up the lights to say overheating limp mode but then the coolant will come back again and repeat it also had a code for absolute manifold pressure to high too , thank god for warranties
Hi Lee,£400.00 profit all the way mate, let the other trader solve any othet potential problems
Agree john, just waiting on the parts to arrive for the matrix and its off
108k isn't bad for a car that isn't reliable
Can see the auctions being full of these and being worth pennies
always see a few in the block (auctions) most of the time with issues
