You have inspired me to keep doing what I do - prune. Also, never ever forget how important it is to train your trees from the start and always. Like a dog Ha Ha. You don't kick a dog into submission. The dog needs training perpetually. You can help nature but you can not fight it.

Hello, I have started a lemon tree from a Meyer lemon seed 2 years ago. It was one long stick of a plant and I have removed some of the lower leaves and trimmed back the top and now have two new branches growing. It is around 40"tall from the top of the plant planter. I would like to remove some more of the lower leaves to make a longer-looking trunk as well as I have not had any flowering on the tree. Would this tree be able to grow fruit since there has not had any flowering and the tree is a little over two years old? Thanks love your videos!
I bought 5 citrus trees with no research and nowhere to plant them. That was my first mistake. I've replanted them in 3 different locations in 2 years. You can see where I'm going with this. Now they're all in pots too small for them, sulking, and I am ignoring them. They are definitely growing backwards. Good fun!

I have a small lemon tree I grew from seed. I repotted it and now it’s definitely growing vigorously, but need to prune the top because the trunk isn’t strong enough and it’s basically a single stalk, besides one branch that just started growing mid way. It just started producing thorns. 1. Can I cut off the thorns? 2. How far down do you think I can prune the top of the tree? 1/3 off the top? It’s about 16” tall- but half that growth happened in the last 2 months after I repotted it. Thanks!

Hi, thanks for the video. Around 2 years ago I planted some lime, orange and mandarin trees in my garden. Their trunks look good but they don’t get taller. I haven’t pruned them yet. They have a lot of leaves and thorns. How can I prune them? Should I prune them hard? I mean should I prune all the leaves from the root to the top? Should I leave some leaves ?
I’ve been growing a lim tree from a seed for like 8 years now. Never once saw a flower, no fruit, not sure what I’m doing wrong, but it is a nice sized tree that I will be putting in the ground this spring. 😊

Thanks so much for sharing the informations. I have a kumquat tree growing in container about 5yrs. I give osmocote cirtrus fertiliser twice a year but the leaves and fruits are small. Can I prune the small branches? What can I do to get bigger leaves, healthy branches and bigger fruits?

I've accidentally pruned off a main branch on my citrus tree a couple of weeks ago and was I just wondering if a new branch will grow out of there eventually. Majority of the tree is pleasing to the eye but because it's missing that one main branch, the tree doesn't have an even canopy all the way around.
I've also had to do some major pruning to that same tree in mid-July and it's producing tons of flowers. Not the ideal time, I know but should I prune the flowers off to encourage more root development and foliage growth?
Hello, sorry about that mishap but it should stimulate more growth! If your tree is larger with a few hundred leaves, then I would let the flowers go on to fruit but if it's smaller, then prune them off after you're done enjoying them :)
Best time to prune your citrus tree is after you harvest all your fruits from the tree which is end of winter or early spring, do not wait until march. Because in February it is the month which all citrus tree bloom flowers. Don't wait until march bc you are cutting off all the flowers that will produce fruits later on. I live in a 70 years old citrus farm.

I live in Australia and I have two kumquat trees growing in container. One tree has fruits and flowers blooming at the moment. And the second tree I just harvested the fruits. Can you please tell me why they not flower and ripe at the same time? (last few years they bloomed and riped the same time)

Hello and thank your for this very informative video. I bought an indoor lemon tree about 6 months ago. It had about 3 big ripe lemons (I collected them) and another 3 green and small. It started to grow 2 new branches at top with enormous leaves (3-4 times in size compared to the older leaves). I was afraid (I still am) to cut the branches because the leaves look so big and healthy, but one of the branches is way too large and curved and it's very unaesthetic. Can I cut the new branches considering we are in the middle of summer? Thank you very much!
So sorry for the delay, and it may be a moot point now! But you can cut any unaesthetic branches anytime. The new, very large leaves are always very exciting to see:)
Thank you for your videos, is there an organic liquid fertilizer I can use? I have both river rocks over landscape fabric so its impossible to fertilize on the soil with granular.
not familiar with liquid! solid you can use espoma citrus fertilizer
I’m growing a lemon tree that was purchased last month as a three year old seedling. It’s about two feet tall with lots of buds (60-80) about to bloom. The tree seems a little small to produce good lemons, but should I wait and see before plucking these buds off?
if its 3 yrs old you could get a few fruit!

I want to bonsai my tree. If I keep cutting the upward growth will this theoretically make the tree grow more lower branches and thicken the trunk quicker?
We don't deal specifically with bonsai, but yes, any cut will cause thickening and more branch growth. Often lemons like lower branch growth anyway - these are juvenile branches - but those would be perfect for you!
Hubby picked up a meyer lemon form a local nursery (my next will be from you) question is I cant tell where its grafted. I want to prune it into a tree as its only about a 20" tall, more like a bush, but its only fruit bearing branch so far is about an inch above the roots. Could I assume this branch is actually from the root tree and not a meyer?
Appreciate the shout out! Hmm - an inch about the roots is likely rootstock - the grafting junction will be a thicker area, often more branches are coming from this spot - that's why we mark our grafting junction with white tape...
I have a potted Meyer Lemon that is about 2 years old. I pruned it back and moved it indoors for the winter. I have big groups of blossoms that have run their course and have browned a bit after several weeks. Should I prune these old buds/flowers or leave them? Some groups are on their own single branch/off-shoot. Should I prune back flush with the branch?
And I do not have any fruit yet. It seems to be flowering quite a bit. Definitely more than ever.
Yes you can prune back as desired, but some maybe starting to become fruit!
The more you prune the more leaves and growth you will get for future heavy harvests, but you can try and see if you get a few fruit to start this time!

We usually only grow from grafting, so the base is usually a bit more mature. But by now (late response lol) there is likely a more woody growth.

Hello! Good work to start with! So there when growing from seed you must know there is no guarantee you will ever get fruit - those trees have to be grafted, but there is a chance! If you trim each shoot off of each branch, that will stimulate more branches. Also as the sun hits the trunk, more branches will start growing out of it!
I’m not sure I know where the grafting junction is on my tree... Planted it about 10 years ago and haven’t really done anything to it. It’s grown to almost a meter in hight, but not so much in width so I’m going to start trimming it down.

One way to tell is if there is different shaoed leaves from your tree coming from the base - they may be slightly bi-lobed or trifoliate because of the root stock - basically they aren't identical to the leaves coming from the top of the tree. Where this transition happens is the grafting junction!
Where do the new shoots grow from?
The shoots will come from any spot that has a thorn/bud junction usually. But also can come straight from the trunk below the grafting junction and those suckers should always be pruned!

Why prune at a 45 degree angle? Also, could you explain in more detail the actual location of the pruning? Just above a leaf junction and a thorn? I didn't quite understand that part. Thank you!
45 degrees allows water to slide off and not stagnate and cause disease!
The pruning really can be done anywhere i usually do it just above a leaf! It's good to prune the tips of every end branch.

the shape is probably preference but if its from seed it can grow to 30ft tall so you might want to grow in more of a tree shape, and make sure you let it get enough wind because when its older it can snap in half if its top heavy.

I just wish when they make these videos they would do more than say this will spur more growth/ Growth where and why? If you cut the tops off the branches then you get a tree that is full of tiny branches? Over crowded? Just a little more detail than cut here.

the tree will also grow taller, so the overcrowding is not a big issue. Often if there are alot of branches on the bottom we like to prune these to the trunk for aesthetic purposes

I have a lemon tree in a pot and it’s new growth leafs look yellowish and translucent where I can see the veins. I gave the plant some organic fertilizer (citrus +avocado feed) but it’s not quite turning around yet... Any suggestions?
Great question! It's difficult to precisiely say without a photo, but it likely is a nutrient deficiency. We recommend a high amount of the organic fertilizers 7 ounces and then giving it a few weeks to show results. It usually isn't a problem to give too much nutrients if it is in a pot as the excess will wash out!
@@rskar thank you appreciate the advice. I felt like there was not enough drainage or it may have not been the right soil so I decided to re-pot it with citrus/avocado soil and found about 12 grubs in the soil!
I cleaned it up, gave it fresh soil and hopefully it's on the road to recovery. I will still give it some nutrients but I was not expecting grubs in a potted plant, do you have suggestions of organic grub prevention?
If you can, perform a PH soil test, your soil is too alkaline 7.5 or higher. (chlorosis)
Depending on the plant, it's fertilization will not work efficiently if the soil's PH aren't correct; most citrus trees needs thier soil's PH in the 5.5 to 6.5 range.
How to bring down your soil's PH requires one of two techniques, the first is a easy one, is to apply a 1/8th of a cup white distilled vinegar, to a gallon of water.
The second one, is to top dressed 4 and 1/8th (leveled tablespoons) of Espoma Soil Acidifier, (its 30% sulfur) onto the soil for (10 inch pots) and gently mixed it in, prior to a deep watering.
@@alclowe1481 Thanks! The PH level has been high, the water in my area is very high PH. I'm trying to use both coffee grounds and an organic soil acidifier, I don't think I used as much as you recommended but it hasn't moved the needle. I'm using a common ph/light/water meter, I think I may try your recommendation on the vinegar + water.
I'm wondering if the Organic Soil Acidifier has gone bad, it has been sitting in my garden bin for over a year. Do those nutrients go bad?

@@jamien3981, be very careful when you use coffee grounds, as the caffeine itself will stunted your plant's growth.
All fertilizers doesn't have an expiration date on them, but they do have a production date on them as well.
On a cautionary note, if there's a special ingredients, and or chemicals that's time sensitive, then surprisingly it will have a expiration date on them. However, the only way to shorten it's shelf life, is to place it in improper storage conditions.
Due to the complexity of our tap water and the ground soil, it may hindered our plants/trees's growth performance.
The only cost defective way to determine if your soil is alkaline or acidity, is to look at anyone's in ground Hydrangeas.
When they're pink, it means that the soil is alkaline, when its blue, the soil is acidity, when its a combination of both, then its slightly below neutral 6.5ish on the ph scale.
As for the water, you can collect rainfall into a 30 to 60 gallons heavy gauge plastic trash cans. If your citrus trees are kept indoors and in a 1 to 7 gallons pot, (8 to 12 inch) then if budget allows, you can buy distilled water.
I don't recommend any other bottled water, as thier source is unknown. Its for a peace of mind purpose.
