    Hello, you seem very knowledgeable about citrus plants, and as a beginner citrus tree owner I am concerned for the health of my plant. It is young and I bought it 2 months ago. It is a meyer lemon which has not fruited or flowered yet. Around 1 foot tall. When I bought it was very healthy, and already had some form of granular fertilizer on its surface. A month later, I thought I should re fertilize it and added a very small amount of slow release citrus spike (brand was jobes, 8-11-11 and I broke it into crumbs). I have noticed 2 weeks after fertilizing that the leaves of the tree became very patchy, however not all. The darker, older leaves at the bottom became patchy and had light green spots first, and not it's some newer ones. They also have brown, burnt looking edges and have developed brown spots as well. They fall when you touch them and are delicate. No sign of pests. As for watering, it's only water every couple of days thoroughly or when soil is dry. Could you suggest the next steps? I am desperate to save this tree and cant seem to find help anywhere. I would appreciate your help 🙏. Btw I am from toronto canada, zone 6b. Thank you.

    Thank you for the great video. I live in Southern California. I have had a Eureka dwarf variegated lemon tree for 15 years. The last time I saw lemons on the tree were when I bought the tree. Ever since, as soon as fruits are forming, they fall off. Now, leaves are falling off too. The tree is in a 25 gallon pot and is fed with citrus spikes. I understand one should not over-water citrus, and I am trying to watch with a moisture gauge. I am at a loss at this point. Help would be greatly appreciated.

    Sugar cane mulch or pea straw are the best for mulching around citrus trees. Just keep the mulch away from the trunk.
    Often bark mulch has been treated with chemicals and if so, should be avoided.
    As the sugar cane or pea straw breaks down it will feed the citrus tree.

    You responded to my question regarding the growing of an orange tree from seed. Thanks for sending me your comment, however, I believe my question went unanswered. Now that the tree is in a 1 gallon pot, it's about 8" tall and quite healthy, do I trim the top growth periodically to strengthen the girth of the trunk? I don't plan on transplanting any time soon, certainly not until the root system is more developed, but I am interested to know what you think I should do to encourage a meatier trunk and healthier root system. Next stop, perhaps in a few years, I can transfer the tree to a 3 gallon pot, and eventually to the ground.

    I just pre-ordered an Owari satsuma mandarin tree that is weather hardy for zone 8 and can be overwintered outside in the Pacific Northwest... I plan to plant it in a large container to start with (28" x 28"x 26") in order to have to avoid repotting it every few years mainly to avoid back strain and also to avoid potential transplant shock. If I were to do so and just amend the soil every year (to add nutrients and replenish nutrients lost) and fertilize as required, do you think that would work?

    I planted orange seeds and sprouted a plant that is now 8" tall, full of foliage with a healthy root system. Recently I transplanted it into a one gallon container. Do I trim the foliage now? I feel the plant needs to develop a substantial trunk. Presently the plant is spindly, but it's only 2 years old. How should I keep taking care of it?

    Opening up the canopy of citrus?😨 well thats a no no!unlike other fruit trees that need their canopy to be opened up,citrus works differently and needs a canopy to shade its feeder roots and crown.Remember- 44 leaves per fruit are required in photosynthesis and fertilization process.
    No offences🙏
    Nice work anyhow👍
    Keep the good work up👍

    Thank you for this video, and as well as your responses to the comment section. I have been trying to grow citrus trees for a few years now, and I failed every year. Your tips on the soil for potting was very useful. I have a question for you. It seems like citrus tree needs to be in a "colder" temperature for an extended period of time for growth. I live in pacific northwest, so the winter can get really cold. I had brought in the plant every year, but I had difficulty get them to live past the winter indoor. My indoor temperature is about 20~22c, and from an article that I read that the citrus needs to be in 18c or under for quite a few months before getting back to the warm temperature. Is this true? I have a supplement grow light for my indoor plant

    Could you give me some idea of the maximum pot size a mature fruiting tree would need to maintain it's health and production? I had a lemon tree I used to take outside for the summer and bring in for the winter. As I am getting older I'm finding that difficult. I'm starting over with smaller trees and would like to know if I can keep them in a smaller pot than I previously had them in and keep them smaller in size, overall, but still producing and healthy.

    Hey, I got a dwarf myer lemon and I don't think i potted it correctly. There is a big knob/bulb attached to the trunk just above where the roots begin. When I potted initially I left that knob exposed. Should that be covered with soil? I'm experiencing leaf curl and yellowing in the leaves as well. Been really careful with water and light so wondering if it had to do with planting?

  • @nancysutton7891

    Thanks for the info! I've had a potted Meyer Lemon for 2 years... it has fruited, and survived in a sheltered corner of the deck, outside, but these last 2 weeks of freezing weather may have done it in (I'm in the PNW). I'm think it will survive eventually, after losing most of it's leaves. BUT it has had serious leaf yellow, but only around the EDGES (not between the veins). I'm sure it needs to be pruned, mulched with compost, and fed. But I also wonder if there is a specific deficiency that causes yellowing at the edges of the leaves. Thanks in advance :)

    • @nancysutton7891
      @nancysutton7891 5 років тому

      @Rogers Gardens Thanks big bunch, Kathleen!! That is exactly the information I've been ransacking the net for : ) I've only found info on yellowing between the veins and nothing on 'edge yellowing' and effects of cold... I think that's the problem... and will take your advice on nutrition, watering, etc. ox

      When fertilizing citrus its best to use a product specifically for citrus and follow the directions on the package.
      Our Down To Earth Citrus fertilizer advises to feed late winter (January/February), late spring (May/June) and early fall (September/October).
      The application on your package is the best indicator to when to use it. You can also view these videos as well.
      We look forward to your next visit, Suzanne

    Nope, incorrect, if you are growing it in a pot you do NOT need to buy a more expensive dwarf tree. Lemon trees grown in a pot will only grow to the size of the pot given. Save your money and get a regular tree. However, If you are planting in the ground and have limited space, that is when you need a tree on dwarf stock so that it will not grow too big.

      @RogersGardensCDM  6 років тому +4

      It boils down to watering. A really large pot full of soil with little root mass may remain too wet too long in the center of the pot. Ideally the pot should nearly dry out in between watering. This naturally happens in smaller pots and in large pots where most of the pot is now filled up with a lot of roots.

      @Rogers Gardens I grew it from seed from a VERY sweet Mandarin orange. It was that good. Just thought I'd try to grow one. It's about four feet above the pot/soil level. I started trimming it after about a year or so to get rid of suckers and give it some shape, like a bonsai. I grew an Asian pear from seed and it's about ten years old. It's got about 30 pears this year. I also have a "Kaffir" lime tree that my Indonesian wife uses the leaves for cooking.
