Polovragi Monastery | Gorj Romania

Polovragi Monastery is 500 years old (1505), the first founders of this place are Radu and Patru, sons of Danciul Zamona, mentioned in a deed issued on January 18, 1480 by the voivode Basarab the Younger (1477-1481). For over a century and a half, the documents do not mention anything about this holy place, so that in 1645, the village of Polovragi would be in the possession of Danciu Pârâianu, the son of Hamza. Danciu Pârâianu built the church on the old foundations, as was frequently done at the time, keeping the good part of them. After Danciul Pârâianu and his predecessors, Constantin Brâncoveanu can be considered the third founder of the Polovragi Monastery. The painting of the church is especially valuable in terms of both iconography and technical execution. It was executed in 1713 by Constantin Zugravul. On both sides of the entrance to the porch you can admire the two representations, iconographic, unique in Romania of the Romanian monasteries dedicated to the Holy Mount Athos. The cells and the other rooms of the monastery are arranged around the church on the east, south and west sides, forming a real fortress next to the wall on the north side. The entrance to the precinct is made on the south side through a massive gate above which rises the bell tower erected in the time of Constantin Brâncoveanu.
Through a gate in the northern wall of the monastery, it enters the second precinct where the hospital of St. Nicholas is located, founded by the abbot Lavrentie, in 1732, being painted in 1738 by Gheorghe and Ion - painters.
