*Carn Dûm: The Stronghold of Angmar* Carn Dûm, the dark and foreboding fortress of Angmar, is situated in the far north of Middle-earth, at the western end of the Mountains of Angmar. This sinister stronghold lies in a desolate and inhospitable region, characterized by its harsh climate and rugged terrain. The geography of Carn Dûm includes jagged peaks, deep ravines, and treacherous passes that make it a natural fortress, difficult for enemies to approach and assault. The inhabitants of Carn Dûm are primarily orcs, trolls, and other foul creatures under the command of the Witch-king of Angmar. This fortress served as the Witch-king’s seat of power during his reign over Angmar, a realm he established to wage war against the northern kingdom of Arnor. The dark sorcery of the Witch-king permeates the region, adding to its malevolent atmosphere and the dread that surrounds it. Carn Dûm’s tactical importance is significant due to its strategic location and formidable defenses. As the capital of Angmar, it served as the central hub for military operations against Arnor. The fortress’s location in the northern reaches allowed the Witch-king to launch surprise attacks and raids into the lands of the Dúnedain, exploiting the difficult terrain to his advantage. The treacherous geography of the region provided natural fortifications, making Carn Dûm a nearly impregnable stronghold. Historically, Carn Dûm was established in the early Third Age when the Witch-king of Angmar founded his realm with the intent of destroying the northern Dúnedain kingdom of Arnor. The ensuing wars, known as the Wars of Angmar, saw many battles and significant destruction. Despite the efforts of the Dúnedain and their allies, the Witch-king’s forces overran much of Arnor, leading to the kingdom’s fragmentation and eventual downfall. Carn Dûm remained a bastion of evil until the late Third Age when the forces of Gondor and the Elves united to bring an end to Angmar’s reign of terror. The Battle of Fornost marked the decisive defeat of the Witch-king’s armies, and Carn Dûm was abandoned and fell into ruin. However, the legacy of its dark history and the shadow of the Witch-king continued to haunt the northern lands. In Tolkien’s "The Lord of the Rings," Carn Dûm’s legacy is remembered as a place of great evil and a symbol of the enduring struggle between the forces of darkness and light. Its geography and inhabitants reflect the malevolent power that once held sway over the region, while its tactical significance underscores the strategic cunning of the Witch-king. The history of Carn Dûm serves as a reminder of the resilience and determination of the Free Peoples of Middle-earth in their fight against the encroaching darkness. Through its desolate landscapes and grim history, Carn Dûm stands as a testament to the epic battles and enduring hope that define Tolkien’s world.
