I'm curious, what does the AK-12 bring to the table? What kind of upgrades does the AK-12 have over the AK-74?
It has a free floated barrel, polymer handguard with rails for accessories like lights and lasers, I think in this variation there are diopter iron sights (however the standard one just has a lot longer of a sight radius), I believe an adjustable gas block, a new stock, a new muzzle device and a rail on the top cover for modern optics. In addition to a bunch of other small things I am forgetting to include.

Kalashnikov concern "expo 2016" at Moscow ;; they told to press that the ' earlier version' had a problem while fire in auto mode ;; i think that new ambidextrous reciprocating charging handle was the main reason for it s malfunction. so better make.. this cancelled prototype with a little modification as non reciprocating ambidextrous charging handle ( Z shaped liver) use of modern composite materials & a Dragunov based high precision (3lugs) bolt-chamber locking system along with reliable ak Long strock gas piston carrier platform are the best choice for future kalashnikov concern new coming products.

the hardest part to replicate that I can tell from a standard ak74 would be the dust cover locking lever as well as the safety selector. since the import ban I am really hoping we start seeing some after market parts to make our ak74m variants look and function more like the ak 12 if we choose to do so

***** indeed tho i doubt they would show off their latest toy in such a manner :P tho i do wonder if it retains the original Kalashnikov platforms brilliant simplicity and reliability 0_o If for those very reasons that great albeit complicated rifles like the AN-94 and AEK-971 were dropped in army trials :/

The AN-94 wasn't really dropped, it's in use by special forces. It was just considered too expensive and complicated for general issue to standard rifle infantry.
And aren't the trials for the AEK-971 still on-going? I thought it was still undecided between the AEK-971 and AK-12, and both have been issued for large scale field trials?

Nehcrum It would be safe to say the Russian military has mostly shelved the AN-94. Nearly all the Russian SF used customized AK-74"s,AK-103's,AK-104's, and AK-105's.

The AK-12 has been in testing but is likely to lose from the AEK.
baff shogun A-545 is much better than the AK-12. But it is difficult and expensive to manufacture.

The maintenance issue is exaggerated,go look at the "Inrange tv"youtube channel and watch their mud test's for the ak and ar.
I Love the AK-12 its my favorite if this was sold in the US I would own it In a heartbeat.
I saw a Russian video that showed the AK-12, on full auto blasting six or more steel targets. The shooter had no problems keeping the weapon on target. If this isn't available to the public, I've seen some Top American made AK-74, and AK-47s on the market.
Too bad they ditched this version :(

Nothing, just an acceptable Ak in 5.45x39. Nothing special otherwise. And completly overhyped for no reason at all.
In field barrel and caliber swapping, telescopic modular stock in line with the sights, stock latch which works both ways, ambidextrous cocking handle, integral Picantini rail on the reciever, ambidextrous fire selector... 4 more integral rails... list goes on. 70 major improvements over AK-74M were introduced.
