I love it when grunts (doesn't matter the media) are shown to actually be competent in their craft. They don't need to be the best, but good enough to actually show that they had actual TRAINING
In Krieg, their training consists of cadets shooting other cadets with live rounds. Krieg is a meat grinder. They ensure the best of the best are sent out by tossing their guardsmen into a meat grinder and picking out the lucky ones that survived.
I think it really underscores the horror of a lot of these situations. These people are the very best-trained, best-equipped, most disciplined soldiers that the planets of the Imperium had to offer. By today's standards any of them would be the greatest soldiers on the planet. But despite all of the training and equipment they're mowed down en masse. It's terrifying to think about.
What really sets the grim darkness here for me isn’t just the presentation which is all excellent, but the back and forth from kriegsmen performing a manoeuvre perfectly to suddenly an out of nowhere space marine detachment making all that progress pointless before it escalates into a full on battle that’ll probably end in a tie. Typically we’ve seen animations with victories or noble sacrifices but here we really see a glimpse into the difficulty and futility of conflict in 40k, and all in just 5 minutes. Seriously, amazing work here.

They're using authentic ww1 storm and infiltration tactics that typically get ignored in media depictions of the war, but that were very effective against trenches. Trenches themselves were far from the most effective defensive system of ww1, but thats another story...
@@randallorndorff i would disagree about the trenches. I belive that for the time it was the best defensive system simply because the constant artillery. I think static strongpoints such as bunkers naturally has their place as well, but the trenches offered the largest amount of protection from shelling (unless you get hit directly). saying its the best at the time is based on the lack of technology for pushing effectively and maintaining supply lines. in a sense I think the best proof for their effectiveness is how widely it was used. I'm fairly certain if they could find a better way or better design they would have resorted to it. however, I would agree that trenches are vulnerable for raids unless supported by machine gun nests, early warning scouts and sharpshooters and not to mentioned barbed wire. I would also agree that defensive lines such as the Maginot Line would be better being a sort of fortified line including bunkers cannons trenches. but outflank-able. however to further prove the usefulness of tranches as a defensive network even against combatants with armor one can look at the finnish against the Russians. note that armor was not easily accessible everywhere but the general use of forcing an enemy to charge a trench seems very dissuading for any force if you have enough defenders in the trench naturally. in short, i personally think the trench especially later war trenches were a decent alternative as opposed to not. especially against enemeies that relay on shelling the general fuck out of you. not all will be safe, but one shell wont wipe out the entire army.

Your hard work for a full year really shines through in these glorious 5 minutes. Well done man, this was a joy to watch and it’s dripping with atmosphere!
The silence is absolutely deafening in the beginning, something very, very few creators can truly capture. This is a masterpiece in its own right, even if just for the small details.
What 40k so often manages to miss in their content is how people can be batshit insane and still be tactically sound. A Krieger guardsman would charge down a Khornate Beserker with nothing but a bayonet and a complete lack of hesitation, but that doesn’t mean they aren’t also an expert on trench warfare. You captured that here pretty nicely.
Yeah, people meme up the Kriegers as suicidal maniacs that will, given the slightest opportunity, charge an Ork Stompa with nothing but a shovel. But let's not forget that needlessly throwing your Emperor-given life away is a grave sin, so Kriegers will always avoid death, as long as it's not necessary for their mission.
@@zimnylech527 Well see people lapdog suckup GWs piss anywhere they aim, including Kriegs Lore, they are not stupid insane freaks, they are incredibly brave zealous, highly dedicated, focused warriors who have chosen to serve to the highest standard. They are not suicidal, they do not do stupid WW1 charges into open enemy fire, they use tactics, however what defines them, is if THAT was what was needed to win a crucial engagement for sound tactical reasons, they would not shirk from it in the slightest!
I liked that they captured a bunker that was in the path of their approach, this gave their assault some breathing room to advance without being completely cut down.
A friend of mine once said it best: "The Kriegers aren't suicidal, they're fantastic. Suicidal people just want to die, fanatical ones want their death to be worth something."
In all honesty I think the best thing to compare kriegers to is dwarf slayer from warhammer fantasy they want to die but they’re death must cost the enemy as much as possible
"In the cruel dark of the distant evil times, there is only the great war in space" had me absolutely lose it. You've got humour, and it's right up my alley
To be honest, this feels like an extended trailer. Short but awesome and leaving me craving more! Hopefully GW gets their collective heads out of their asses and lets fan content flourish again in the near future.
That quick shot of a Sister in a cell was really nice. It added a haunting darkness to the film and while she didn't show up again - it leaves you to imagine what it must be like to be locked inside a fortress under siege, hearing everything going on outside.
Thats what you took from the whole thing, you not think it would be worse to be fighting in a siege than just being locked up listening to one? you are looking far too deeply into it lol.
Fiction, especially the science flavor of it rarely appreciate or account for the idea of how wars are best fought. By doing the smart thing with minimal resources wasted. Warhammer 40k is genius in the way that wars are fought. The Imperium keeps striving for the best results with minimal losses of critical resources. Trenches are really useful because they turn the ground into a shield for your troops and would surely be much cheaper and easier to set up than some amazing energy shield that needs just what the name implies. Energy. Creating the energy for that likely requires burning fuel. Fuel that could be instead used for vehicles, or to make more energy for lights, cooking and perhaps even heating.
we dont see them cuz they're outdated, I mean tanks were developed in order to break the trench warfare of WW1 so even nowadays no one uses trenches anymore, much less in the future but this is warhammer and logic is not very important in this universe lol
@@jjwang7597 Trench warfare is still used today. It is a great advantage that should not be overlooked. Not sure what country you are in, but western militaries love dig ins and foxholes. We also like shallow trenches left laying around because it can slow enemy advancement.
@@YuGiOhAbridgeFAN Have you heard of smart munitions? Cause those things can accurately hit your target or wherever a commander wants the shell to hit. Then there's drones. Then there's the fact that every military in history tries to come up with a weapon that can break a defense. Why? Cause no one likes a long war. Long wars suck, there's no reason to keep digging long trenches for every kilometer when you could keep on the offensive. Heck, it's even on the Art of War itself. This isn't 1900 where weapons where heavy on the defensive favor. Iraq thought trench warfare would be useful in 1991 and the Coalition thought they'd be losing 30k guys, but it just so happened that warfare changed so much that the Iraqi defenses got curbstomped in only 100 hours. Reason why foxholes are still being used is for infantry to hold ground so the rest of the formation could keep up.

Honestly, Vraks stands as testimony that despite GWs crackdown on Fan animation, there are people who will shine their bright light regardless. Props to you Janovich, and here's to hoping that your future is full of new and interesting adventures
One of the last lights in these truly dark times. We had a goldenage for fananimations and got it killed without glory or mercy. This project is an very good example for what could have been and might still come. Keep it coming, I will watch whatever you put out
I feel like I see astartes inspiration in some of the shots, with how they’re framed, and some of the flow of the scenes. And I’m ALL FOR IT. Like someone else said the community has consistently made higher quality productions for WH40k than actual WH40k. This was amazing and very well made.
I can't help but feel than even in the 41st millennium, idly shining a flashlight out of a front line trench is still the dumbest imaginable thing you could do as a lookout. Instant sniper fodder.
@@Pedro-ho2xj Idk. Why do they use WW1 tactics that are long obsolete even today (let alone in 38k years)? Its fantasy. It doesn't make sense. But apparently they don't have nightvision.
@@cauchyschwarz3295 I can think of a few reasons. In an age where technology is advanced enough to intercept radio waves; if the enemy tries to signal the enemy with radio you can realize that your frontline bunker has been raided and an attack is about to commence. But if instead of an interceptable technology, you just use a flash light that you point towards the friendlies, the enemy you just raided would be clueless about the situation in the bunker. There are times where primitive tactics are harder to track than the modern tactical things we rely on. As for night visions it could be just that they were never issued to Krieg soldiers since they are supposed to die on frontlines, expandable and not worth wasting a NVG on.
@@grimmoire5952 You are trying to make it work, starting from the conclusion. Thats a bad way to reason in general. I get that you like that universe, it delivers awesome and emotionally charged visuals. But none of this makes sense. We have seen the relative decline of armour compared to firepower for centuries now. All the more pronounced today. And it is a tendency that is likely to continue. And that is apart from chemical, biological and nuclear warfare. It is very very unlikely that people 38k years from now would use what is essentially knights in power armour or cavalry charges or slow moving tanks with thick armour. They'd be sitting ducks even today. Maybe look into reactive armour and why it is necessary. I can't imagine what warfare in 38k years would look like, but certainly not like a mix of middle ages and WW1. Warhammer mixes tech and attiudes from different ages for entertainment, not for realism.
Yah the Death Korps are very smart, they just have a great desire to die which results in them running straight at machine guns. They try to accomplish something tho with the sacrifice of their lives so their death isn’t pointless. Also you gotta feel for the Vraks defenders. If you read the story they gave the Death Korps, one of the hardest sons a bitches in the Imperium, a serious beating over and over and over again. The Imperium was gunna call off the siege because it was in a stalemate and they wanted access to the weapons on the planet and probably would have gladly allowed the Vraks defenders to serve as an elite force in the Imperial army (cause even they don’t turn away good fighters). The only real thing the Vraks defenders did was defend their home from an invading army and as far as they knew it was the Death Korps that were on the wrong side (civil wars happen all the time in the imperium when commanders and groups disagree). The thing that screwed them tho was the Chaos Marines arriving because now the Imperium had a reason to continue fighting and there would be no pardoning the defenders.
This is A+ shit man. One thing I really wanna appreciate is that you didn’t focus too much on model quality. After Astartes it feels like people are way too focused on the models when what makes an animation good is the animation (the fluid and weight of animation) The models still look awesome but it’s evident you known what makes a 40K animation good. Good job man
Almost escaped my eye but that russ at 4:41 does look a lot like a reaver battle tank, given away by it's sleaker gun, more rounded plain turret and only a single flat front plate. The reaver is basically a dollar store russ, only used by 2nd and 3rd grade units so the vracksians definately had a lot of them. Not sure if that was intentional or just the odd result of some free design choices, but if it would just be an insane attention to detail. Great work.
The AT-70 Reaver Battle Tank was indeed a discount Leman Russ, but my question is how and why did the Vraksian Heretics get them? My reason is that the AT-70 is most known for being among the forces of The Blood Pact, a large Chaos force that used ti to supplement a lack of Leman Russes and other Frontline vehicles. Vraks would almost certainly have a decent supply of Russes and Russ variants. Maybe what you saw was a Chimera or other armored vehicle? I'm not saying it CAN'T be an AT-70, just that it seems questionable. Then again, at one point in this campaign Khornate Berserkers were being airdropped onto the frontlines to paste Kriegers. So I guess it'd not totally out of the way for the AT-70 to show...
GW should be ashamed of their lives for attempting to silence creativity. Thank you for being a collective of integrity in a universe watched over by shameless dictators.
Amazing attention to fluff details, we can tell exactly when in the Siege we are by what is happening. The Cardinal is still free, which instantly puts us before Zufhor's coup and the Faithless' treachery, and then the counter-attack and drop pod assault tells us Arkos has already called for backup, and the reinforcing warbands are just now making their infamous counter-push.

Unfortunately the changes of GW IP policies brought a lot of uncertainty for all creators. Uncertainty is the death of creativity, we've all seen some of our favorite creators leave the Warhammer scene over 2021. As for The Siege of Vraks, this change in policy came during production of this film. I've decided the best course of action was to drastically reduce the scale of the final project so that it could be "finished" in a much shorter timeframe. Of course that means that in some sense, it's not really finished at all. As you may have come to understand I had much bigger ambitions for Vraks, but until GW sufficiently changes their policies we'll have to do with these five minutes.
A friend of mine once said it best:
"The Kriegers aren't suicidal, they're fantastic. Suicidal people just want to die, fanatical ones want their death to be worth something."

This made me realize how rarely we see trench raids in fiction. I'm glad for it.
Fuel that could be instead used for vehicles, or to make more energy for lights, cooking and perhaps even heating.
we dont see them cuz they're outdated, I mean tanks were developed in order to break the trench warfare of WW1 so even nowadays no one uses trenches anymore, much less in the future
but this is warhammer and logic is not very important in this universe lol

@@cauchyschwarz3295 why don't they have night vision goggles?
Love how you showed off how the death korps weren’t a bunch of idiots. The best part in my opinion is when the alpha legion appear
Absolutely
whats death korps they are all alpharius
Was that the alpha legion or thousand sons?
@@danny9008 yes
For those who knows the siege of Vraks..... There is alot of nice detail thrown into this... Amazing job!

2021 has been an absolute blast making Vraks and interacting with this great community.
If one day they welcome fan creators again, I will happily continue this work of love.

Netflix, Amazon Prime, Disney +, and others are all pay for content. The difference is that GW isn't a large media empire like the others. Honestly most of the complaints I've seen boil down to "how dare I have to pay for a hobby, I should be getting things for free"
@@erwin669 the hell you on about? and no its not something just gw does the problem is gw doesnt know what the hell they are doing, they killed free advertisement , if you are to review their product under gw's permission you are not allowed to say anything negative and model painters that wanted a carrier in painting already had one on youtube no new jobs were made and many animators gw hired are apparently not happy with their choices to sign up with gw but stay because its the only way they can make animations for 40k anymore... at least based off what i was able to find/hear while looking into... no promises this is true but honestly i would not be surprised but regardless what is your issue with me having my perspective based off of gw's choices they have made and personally i dont agree with them if your upset by then gladly keep it to yourself because i simply do not care to waste anymore time on this discussion and no im not trying to be rude about this... i simply do not wish to argue any more then this over im at this point far done with
This is a light in the darkness that is today. The memories of the stories told about Vraks. For heroes that were unnamed dying in their thousands just to secure a poisiton that is not known if it'll be worth it. Amazing work brother!
BRAVO!!!! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 Even the shortest and slightest immersion into the 40K atmosphere is just downright amazing!
I thought this was going to be one of those one sided Krieg fanboy film but that didn't happen. Really enjoyed the animation bro, appreciated watching it
Really good work! I really liked how you didn't just fall into the classic trope of, "WWI tactics just means glorious charges mowed down by MGs." In the middle act you showed a trench raid (which are very important in trench warfare) that in turn paved the way for what could've been a successful assault. And they would've gotten away with it too if it wasn't for meddling Chaos Marines!
You really captured some horror of 40k in this with the ambiance and atmosphere. Well done!
This has renewed my hope in the warhammer community, a truly slaaneshmas miracle.
"Welcome to the Siege of Vraks, we hope you enjoy your stay in the trenches!"
Death Korp of Krieg: WE LOVE TRENCH WARFARE!!
Mad respect Janovich, there is so much modelling done by you!
"Nobody expects the Death Corps of Krieg!"
Also the reason the guardsman stabbed the Vraks guard was because there's a difference between mostly dead and all dead!
A Christmas miracle!
The passion in this is incredible even if it's just 5 minutes.
I hope that passion will still continue in what ever new project you decide to do next.
The horse charage bit reminded me of a movie where Polish Cavalery charge at enemy postion and just get mowed down by machine guns
