Hi, I just saw 10 years ago I left a comment. I was a boy in the 1960’s and if you had a Cadillac parked in your driveway 1910 through 1980 it meant YOU MADE IT in life, owned a car that sold for more money than a house sold for, in many circumstances. Year 2023, a changed miserable world now.
I love cars from the 70's! They're so unnecessarily huge!
I like those cars too. Especially the red Coupe deVille in the beginning. You can really see that fit and finish was beautifully done. I dare to say there was nothing comparable on the planet back then. I´ve been around these cars and their competitors. And back then, even a new Rolls or Mercedes would look and feel like a truck besides a Caddy. Inside AND out. Especially the 75 and 76 modelyears. In europe we really did admire those cars for their quality and unique style. Believe it or not :)

Back when owning a Cadillac really meant something..My dad bought a 76 Coupe de Ville new. It cost $12 grand brand new..I think it was the most beautiful car he ever owned..Firethorn metallic red with black leather interior and a soft cabriolet roof with lamps on the side.Gas was 75 cents a gallon and it was the best car to take on vacation..Best ride of any car I've ever been in..

What I do know is that California smog exemption status is only 1975-and-BACK. So 1976 is the first year moving forward that they still have to pass muster.
That in my mind is what makes 1976 cars particularly bad- at least from my point of view.
Hopefully I’ll get the chance to ride in one some day. Sounds nice and cozy. I can only imagine what sinking into those huge, shiny, black leather seats must have felt like and then experiencing what an absolute joy it must have been to ride in. Makes me nostalgic for something I never did lol.

I forget if our 1976 Fleetwood had the 472 or the 500. It was one of either. Yes, the trunks were huge. Something you will not realize unless you are a child who did such a thing, but those doors were incredibly heavy.... if you left a finger in the jamb, you'll NEVER forget it! :)

I had a 74 with a 472, i couldn't help but just stare at that engine almost daily, that was back in the 80's, everyone I knew had 1.6, 2.0 and the lucky ones 2.8 Litre V-6

As a child my grandfather was a cadillac man ,he would buy one every couple years,he kept them spotless too. I'll never forget the how comfortable it was riding in the backseat.I think everyone should ride in a cadillac atleast once in their life.

People now a days cannot imagine what truly dream mobiles that these cars were! No car nowadays has the same allure, excitement, glamour and satisfying driving pleasure that these magic carpets had! Thanks for sharing this video!

cadillacs had climate control with 2 ac units one in front one in back and you set the temp. not just min/max..load leveling suspension.tilt , telescopic,18 pre sets on both am/fm with tape /8 track. older models had record players.the light on the front fender lights up at night to see clearly around the corner...twilight sentinal headlights (low and high beam on their own)power seats mirrors ,foot rest for rear passengers. etc.etc.. they were loaded with more amenities than a rolls royce..
Before the 70's, A/C wasn't expected even in a luxury car...go to sites with episodes of the original version of THE PRICE IS RIGHT for proof

I've had a few old 1969-1976 Cadillacs and nothing rode like them. You could speed over potholes, railroad tracks, speed bumps, ect. and feel nothing. All you'd hear would be a slight "thump-thump" of the tires, lol. Those big 472 and 500 c.i. engines were a little thirsty in city streets too but not bad on the highway.

D McNamara one major reason for this ever increasing expense and ever decreasing value is that women are being manipulated to run to the workfield as if their human worth depended on their corporate price tag. as a result of basic supply and demand many more available workers meant value was lowered for everyone, not just women.
many 'backdated bigots' like me with a grasp in economics said although it began as a empowerment 'choice', it won't remain one for too long. we were shamed for saying such horrible thing. now as day passes by we see exactly what we predicted back in early 80s. for majority of people there's no choice but to work, work, work, just to be able to get by.
we are not robots so depression is higher than ever and anti depressants are most common prescription drug. the faster we realize the value of life and worth of a person doesn't depend upon how much cash money they bring, the better. ask the japanese, they'll confirm since they made the exact mistake. and the south koreans are in the process of repeating that.

My grandfather had a 1976 Coupe Deville which we continued to own until 1990 when it was too long to fit in the garage at the new house. Had to be sold. What a shame!!!!

Today when they bring out a car on "Price is Right" you look at it and ask "what is it?" Today's cars have absolutely no identity, style or presence. They're just transportation.

Cocaine, sideburns, leather 3/4 length coats, with lapels the size of Italy... polyester leisure suits, Huge Afros, that the brothers used to call a "Natural".... platform shoes, that lit up, or that had a little goldfish, swimming in the huge acrilyic heel... I saw a mac daddy wearing an orange leisure suit, with a gold hat, with a big feather, & a pair of those platform boots, with the fish swimming in the acrylic soles of the boots, strutting down Wisconsin Avenue, the main drag in Milwaukee, way back in '78... And I remember thinking, wow there goes a real pimp! He might have been a pimp, but he sure as hell dressed himself!

I still have a 1972 Buick Riviera and until a few years ago a Buick Electra LTD same year. 19 feet long, 127" wheelbase with a 455 cubic inch. Nothing like floating down the road in vintage Detroit iron.

Picked up an 80,000 mile, Lieutenant's, Wisconsin State Patrol, 1977 Plymouth Gran Fury, at their 1984 auction in Madison. For the final gavel price of $825.00, I got this: ;-) 440 cubic inch Plymouth Pursuit Special, Police Commando Motor, Dual cop Exhaust, Underhood Identification Plates, identifying the various Heavy Police Service Items, included on the car... Heavy Police Suspension, to include a massive 2 inch rear sway bar, combined with an extra heavy spring leaf package, police gas shocks, fat Cop vented black Steel Rims, special High Speed Cop Rubber, 150+ mph certified, big disc Brakes, big front cop suspension, reinforcement welds, all along the undercarriage, to reinforce anything that they thought could cause a loose frame condition, as the car cornered at high speed, 200 amp alternator, (about the circumference of a small pizza, if I remember correctly) Carter Thermoquad 625 cfm 4 barrel cop jetted carburetor, Super capacity cooling/heating system, for all of that idling, in below zero conditions, in the dark snowy Midwest. 4 core cop radiator, to chill out the extremely deadly hot summers, of the sultry Midwest. 2chrome spotlites, Verified, 150 mph Speedometer, coupled to a super Severe Service, 4(!) Planetary Geared, Cop Torqueflite automatic Transmission, tan, cop, utilitarian, to the point of beauty, ,bench seats, extra overhead driver and passenger dual bulb lights, for ticket writing duties, in the dead of a dark, Midwestern night, and a whopping serving of Enforcement Attitude! This Police Sedan was Slate Grey, and the body and interior were in almost factory fresh condition when I took possession and ownership of the car, after the auction was over in Madison. You could almost smell the donuts, see the thick mustaches in the rear view mirrors, feel the polyester detectives suits on the interior, and just pick up on the overall law enforcement attitude of this Immense Plymouth Sedan.
That car, with that absolutely screaming 440 Commando Police Interceptor engine, probably has a large number of Camaro and Firebird drivers from back in that era, still sitting on a psychiatrist's couch, expressing their disbelief, that a four-door, slate gray family sedan, completely annihilated them, in a speed competition, down a darkened frontage road, after the vehicles hit about 35 miles an hour.
The big Plymouth wasn't much off the line, until it started building horsepower, and then it was a different story. Junior had Made the mistake of thinking the race had been won, until we started building Chrysler® Brand© Cop Interceptor, Commando, Severe Duty, Police Service Certified, Horsepower... and then it was a different story.
Once you got past 50 miles an hour, there was nothing... And I really do mean that, nothing, on the road, that could touch it.... And That is back from the old days, when The Big Plymouth was earning its keep, doing the Intercepting, Chasing the bad guys, and Pacing the speeders. Because it had 2.91 gearing, and Four Hundred and Forty Chrysler cubic inches, that could breathe that engine into the stratosphere, as it was coming out of second gear...

I had a '71 and a '75 Fleetwood and a '76 Eldorado. Unusual cars in the UK, but great fun. So much better than any of the cars that any of the manufacturers are making today. They just oozed character even if they drank petrol like it was going out of fashion. :-)

Just for reference, my 71 eldorado is just a few inches shorter than 20 feet long. Its a behemoth.
Those were the end of the lines for Cadillac. That brand, as well as all the brands, went downhill from there when the government got involved in the car industry. But I remember driving some of them... they were class.
now it's time for the government to get out of the car industry and only trump will do it.

The 71 Coupe Deville a true dream car. 74 Eldorado Convertible heaven on earth, 75 Coupe De Ville simply perfect 76 Eldorado Convertible made you feel special, 74 Fleetwood another world.
I have a 76 Cadillac fleetwood brougham that's my daily car. The ride is unlike anything made today. Made when luxury and comfort was real instead of an allusion.

That’s how it was! A/C is standard on today’s cheapest new cars, but was an extra-cost option on almost every American car until the late 70’s. For a while earlier, Cadillac sold an entry-level model called the Calais, still quite expensive, that lacked A/C and most of the “famous Cadillac power accessories” that Jay touted on Casa de Cadillac’s upscale models. IIRC the Calais (named after a French beach town on the English Channel) had an AM radio standard, but I wouldn’t bet on that. The standard seating choices were icky vinyl, or a rather nicer cloth/vinyl combination, but certainly not leather. What you were getting on that stripped-down Caddy for about $55K in today’s dollars was Cadillac engineering, with the same exterior look and paint as many pricier models, and the same engine (except for the ultra-pricey Eldorado), and huge Cadillac spaciousness..
Wow! 1970's Cadillacs were really a visual knock-out! Coupe de Ville,, Elderado, Fleetwoods. $9K, $11K, were in today's dollars something like $35K to $45K. WOW! What cars Cadillac use to be!

i've owned a lot of cadillacs and they have been an absolute pleasure to own and drive for over 50 years now....my 66 is my favorite, she has options and amenities a rolls royce will never come with...429 big block passes everyone smoothly.. . my daughters, her favorite is her 6 door concourse de calais..my 1960 convertible was a real looker..a couple of these had 572 big blocks with front wheel drive..
In my opinion... America peaked in the 1960s and 70s. It's been down hill ever since. Everything from music to housing to disposable income to personal safety... It's all shit in 2017.

That would be the Buick Electra 225, grandma had two of em!
After 1975, the headlights were square instead of round.

Prior to 1975 (or 74?- really not so sure of the exact cutoff, but you’re close); rectangular (or square) headlights were illegal. When the government finally allowed them, all the automakers jumped on them, because none of them wanted to look out of date still using round headlights. But in truth both were still optional. BMW, VW, late 70’s Lincolns, LTD’s, etc.
Very similar to the transition from dual to quad headlights between 1957 & 1958.

i have the exact same cadillac as the one at 2:55 haha. i feel so excited whenever i look out my window and i see that car, and i get to think to myself... damn.. i own that.

I watched every one of these shows I could back in the day, JUST to see if they would indeed, give away a Cadillac!! These cars the the ULTIMATE in '70s car excellence!
Why don't they give away cars like that on game shows today? Now it seems like all you see on Let's Make a Deal or Wheel of Fortune are crappy cars like a Chevy Spark or a Ford Fiesta... and people actually get excited about them! It it was me winning a POC like that on a game show, I'd tell them "thanks, but you can keep it".
brand new car. accept it and have it towed and sell it for maximum price with 0 miles. or take the cash equivalent if available.
The price of a Cadillac then 9 to 12 thousand with inflation today 50 to 60 thousand . So the game shows will stick with the Kia and other cheaper cars .

I won a jeep on the Price is Right. It's not as easy as you would think to sell it for top dollar. The dealer will only give you 50% of the value because once you sign the paper work, it is now a used car. Miles or no miles. And yes, you do have to sign the paper work for the dealer to get paid by CBS. I took it to Carmaxx. I still took a 7k loss off of the sticker with 160 miles on it from the ride home.

Taxes varied by state of course, and even by county. But no way in hell is it accurate to claim 30-40% tax rate on cars then. Nobody would have purchased new cars! I know during that era, in Indiana the excise tax was more like 2.5% of a vehicle’s new price. The rate for used cars was adjusted for depreciation.
All told, all taxes on a brand new $12,500 Cadillac - including registration, likely would have been under a grand.
SlotAddict Brian - There is no “game show tax” as such. Winnings from game shows - both cash and material, are taxed the same as any income or purchase, no matter how you acquire them.
In the case of cash prizes, you pay regular income tax (state/federal) according to whatever bracket the prize bumps you into.
You’d pay even less if your state of residence charges no individual income tax, seven states don’t. In that case, California state taxes would be the only deduction, as most game show production is in California.
This is the way Let's Make A Deal should be! Big luxurious cars and 2 (TWO!) contestants for the big deal. Life was good back then.

Beautiful cars. These Caddy's cost twice as much as the average everyday drivers, that "normal" people took out loans for. If you could afford to park one of these in your driveway, you truly have "arrived", and attained the American dream. Cadillacs were perceived that way for a long time, and rightfully so.
These Cadillacs were a successful styling exercise, and they were a product of the times that they were marketed in. Were they perfect? Nope. Is a modern computer designed GM Cobalt, with a faulty ignition switch any better, AFTER, we all paid tax payer dollars to bail out GM? Give me a 70's Cadillac over a Cobalt, any day. Class dismissed.

A lot of the game shows sourced Caddys through them. I wonder what they got from it other than a national plug for a local dealership. (For that matter, none of the other makes ever seem to plug the dealer...)
Even back then, Southern California had plenty of drivers.
Sometimes the producers would just outright buy the cars. Other times, they would get a discount in return for the advertising.
And btw, Casa De Cadillac is still around today.

The head gasket problem I think you're referring to was a problem on the Northstar engine (which was otherwise an incredible powerplant) was discontinued in 2011. The "shotty[sic]" transmission?
