    I think Spock was in command in that time.Due to the fact that Spock stated to Kirk he believe it was a mistake for him to accept promotion. He belong on the bridge of the ship not behind some admiral desk. Also Kirk himself told picard to never let them do anything that took him off the bridge of that ship. which seemed to come from personal experience.

      Theoretically, Spock was the listed Captain, but Kirk popping in to take over from time to time of the old girl when he could get away with it. Same kind of thing as with several ships having a designated Captain in real world navies even when there's an admiral onboard who is actually in command there

    Although there is no known captain or crew to speak of, the NX-1 wasn't the first Enterprise. It was the XCV-330 USS Enterprise which was seen referenced multiple times in the canon including a painting in an episode of ST:Enterprise, a model sitting on the desk of Admiral Marcus' desk in Into Darkness, and specifically referenced by William Decker in ST:The Motion Picture. Not bad! Nice to see Capt. Jonathan Archer getting more recognition.
    By rights though, Commodore Decker's 'command' of Enterprise during The Doomsday Machine is irrelevant- Capt. Kirk invoked his Executive Privelege as CO of the Enterprise and Ordered Mr. Spock to assume command of the Enterprise during the course of that episode.

    Any way you look at it, Archer lives a LONGASS time.
    He’s referenced in the JJ Abrams movie by Scotty, and would have been 140 year old if he was alive then.
    However, the 2009 film never referenced him being alive. It only says “Admiral Archer’s prized beagle,” it’s possible Archer had a beagle that managed to outlive him.
    A writer for Enterprise said that that a 132 year old Archer died at his home in upstate New York in the year 2245, exactly one day after attending the christening ceremony of the first Federation starship NCC-1701 Enterprise (at least in the prime timeline.) This fate for Archer was going to be revealed in the Mirror Universe episodes for Enterprise, but was cut last minute.
    Going off of this, it’s reasonable to assume that Archer COULD HAVE survived an extra 7 years in the Kelvin timeline. OR, it’s also very possible that he was dead in the 2009 movie when he’s referenced by Scotty, and only his beagle was still alive when Scotty beamed it away.
    Of course, scotty’s beaming incident happened likely a few years before the events of the 2009 film, so it’s likely that in the Kelvin Timeline: Archer had another beagle in the final years of his life, died in 2245 at 132 years old, and then 3 years later, Scotty accidentally beamed his dog away.
    Now, I think it’s kinda impossible that this beagle is Porthos. One of the writers for Star Trek 2009 said that it was, but I’m pretty sure he was joking in the interview with this statement, or it at least wasn’t meant to be taken seriously... Porthos is referenced as dying in the Enterprise book “Patterns of Interference,” (which isn’t canon, but is a lot more realistic than assuming it was a 125 year old dog...) Again, I think it’s most likely Archer just had another beagle in the last years of his life. They never CALL the dog Porthos in the 2009 movie, again they just say “prized beagle.”
    After being captain, Archer ended up being an Admiral and Chief of Staff at Starfleet Command. He later went on to serve as ambassador to Andoria from 2165 to 2175. From 2175 to 2183, Archer served as a member of the Federation Council, followed by eight years as Federation President from 2184 to 2192. (He was also an honorary member of the Andorian Imperial Guard.) Following his presidency, he likely either retired or returned to his position as admiral for the remaining years of his life. Even if he didn’t necessarily command the ENTERPRISE for a long time, this guy had a CRAZY LONG career, and in the reboot enterprise books, he’s referenced as commanding a few other ships after the enterprise.
    Anyways, there’s some sense put to Archer’s age and the reference from the JJ Abrams movie! It surprisingly actually fits in well.

    the refitted Enterprise's "shakedown cruise" was the V'Ger incident. Did you not see the movie? It was made very clear that the ship was barely ready and was untested. That's why they spiraled in to the wormhole.

      Keith Watson No, It is well established in Canon that the Enterprise was taken out of service immediately at the end of Kirk's five year mission, as it was in need of repairs. Decker was in command of the refit process. It was also very clear that there had been no shakedown cruises before the nearly disastrous first test of the new engines when launching from space dock.

    Decker also wasn't pleased in Admiral Kirk because he had to take a temporary reduction in rank. The only reason Decker stayed on Board Enterprise is because it was fully refitted vs what Kirk served on as Captain and Decker was used as an advisor. Like when Kirk wanted to Fire phasers and Decker said no Photon torpedoes. He told Kirk that the warp drive had been redesigned and the phaser power was now channeled through the warp core.

    • @calvinhandley2373
      @calvinhandley2373 3 роки тому +1

      The most popular theory is that the Enterprise A was the refitted NCC-1717 USS Yorktown. Other sources say it was the newly constructed USS Ti-Ho (NCC-1798) or the USS Atlantis (also newly constructed). To me this doesn't make sense since it had been firmly established in STII, STIII, & STIV that the Constitution class ships were outdated. Enterprise was scheduled to be scrapped in STIII, so it makes no sense that Starfleet would be building new Constitution class vessels when they could instead be building Miranda class vessels and possibly Constellation class vessels. The Constellation has always seemed to be a bridge between the Constitution and Excelsior class in it's design.

  • @wink1eafc774
    @wink1eafc774 5 років тому +11

    If the Enterprise A was 40 years old, we must assume it had the same extensive refit the original Enterprise went through as being identical.
    The Enterprise refit was so extreme it was basically stripped to it’s keel. It was totally a new ship after its refit. Upgraded in every way. So if the ship was refitted in 2272, then really is the ship 40 years old by 2286?
    If I remember the exchange between Decker and Kirk, he basically stated Kirk wasn’t experienced with the refitted Enterprise and didn’t know the ship as well as him due to the extreme refit starfleet did with the constitution class ships in the 2270s. So by the 2290s these were still very capable starships when you consider the excelsior class ships still were being used in the dominion war in the late 2370s, by that time a 100 year old design!

But anyway from what I remember from my source books...Kirk took over in 2271 and following the V'Ger incident he commanded a second 5-year mission which ended in 2276. Spock was then promoted to captain and took command in 2277 and was training cadets until his death in 2285 as seen in TWOK.

      Right you are. I think what throws off a lot of people is that the events of The Motion Picture are supposed to take place a couple of years or so after the Original Series, but because it was filmed over eleven years later, the actors seemed to have aged that much. Then on the timeline, the Wrath of Khan is supposed to take place much later, like fourteen years after the V'Ger incident, but the actors have now only aged by two and a half years, and the ship still looks the same, so even with new uniforms, it throws off the casual viewers perception unless they are intimately acquainted with the Star Trek narrative.

      There is actually an even more important reason why Paramount and CBS do not want any licensed products, especially those of literary relevance (novels and games), to be canon. If Paramount or CBS decided to adopt anything that was not originally created by an employee but by a contractor, they might have to pay royalties for each and every mention of this character or concept! So the Kzinti species from The Animated Series (TAS: "The Slaver Weapon") never found its way into any of the live series. The episode involving the Kzinti was written by Larry Niven, closely based on one of his novels (The Soft Weapon). Niven was irritated when Dean Foster wrote the novelization of the episode instead of himself, although he contradicts the common rumor that he threatened legal actions against Paramount. Nevertheless it seems that Paramount preemptively banned the Kzinti from canon Star Trek, as well they prohibited their use in licensed works in at least three cases (Kzinti at Memory Alpha). Still, it was planned to finally include them in the fifth season of Enterprise. Another prominent example is the character of T'Pol, who was named T'Pau in the draft of the series. But TPTB cautiously changed it to T'Pol in order to avoid the due credit to the author of TOS: "Amok Time", Theodore Sturgeon, in every episode. T'Pau was eventually included in the Vulcan arc on Star Trek Enterprise, though.
      Star Trek writers are expected to be creative and not perfect librarians (something that is largely left to the fans and particularly Memory Alpha today after Richard Arnold and later the Okudas used to fill that role). With 600+ hours of TV it is already extremely hard to come up with stories that are original and still not in contradiction to previous installments. Without the help of the Star Trek Encyclopedia and other reference works as well as of their colleagues and editors a writer would find himself lost in a confusing maze of facts that must be taken into account. This would become many times as complicated if they additionally had to take into account all novels. All of them because where could a line be drawn? And what about the games? They establish many facts as well. At some point it wouldn't be possibly any longer to insert new data because the adventures would fill many lifetimes of characters or ships, with incalculable inconsistencies.

    Don't forget the conversation McCoy had with Kirk during his "birthday" in WofK. "This is not about age, and you know it. Its about you flying a damn computer console, when you wanna be out there hopping galaxies". Seems the Admiral in addition to adding his two cents on the Kobiashi Maru, spends most of his time in the office. While its not unheard of for flag officers to keep their own ship. It would make sense that Enterprise would be a flag ship of the Admirals yet assigned to cadet training. Something the US navy used to do quite often. While obviously Spock is their teacher and Captain. Anytime Kirk wants a ride as an Admiral he does get to pick his own ship.

    Decker was a commodore but was clearly in command of his ship in the Doomsday Weapon episode. Further, an admiral typically picks a flagship to operate from (though they usually also have a flag captain to actually run the ship while they perform fleet operations). Given that Star Trek usually shows ships operating as singletons, it could be that a flag officer acts as captain of the ship due to their overall command of the ship's missions.

    Kirk could have commanded another Ship after the NCC-1701's first 5 yr mission. When Decker says 'You haven't logged any star time in 2 years..' The Motion Picture could take place around 2280. Since Kirk and the rest looked about 10 yrs older.

      The movie most likel takes place in 2272 or 2273 depending on when the 5y mission ended. It could also be as late as 2278 but not later because of the uniforms.
      They are shown in a TNG episode where the ENT-D is trapped in a time loop with another ship that sits there since 2278 with the crew using the same red uniforms used since WoK. Even memory alpha states it only being on the 2270s and don't give an exact date.

    Scotty distinctly calls the Enterprise A a "new" ship during his log entry at the beginning of ST V; there is nothing to suggest it was a refitted old ship. Most books comment that it was a newly completed ship that was quickly renamed. However, it is correct to say that the new Excelsior class was the ship all the up-and-comers wanted (as Sulu alluded) so, I agree, it was a mild additional loss of status for Kirk to be given what was then an 'average' starship.

    There were reference books written years ago (in the 1990’s I believe?) one of which, Michael Okuda helped write called “The Star Trek Encyclopedia” & “Mr. Scott’s Guide to the Enterprise”. Both had references to the Enterprise A Originally being named the USS Ti-Ho and rechristened the Enterprise A. A few guides also written during that same time (I’ve forgotten their names) also stated that Kirk was promoted to Fleet Captain Originally (like Pike), then to Admiral. But, after the events of Star Trek the Motion Picture & the LODD of “Captain” Decker, he kept command of the Enterprise for another 5 year mission, then Captain Spock took command a number of years prior to the TWOK events.
    Like I stated in the beginning...these were written in the 90’s, before the internet & memory Alpha/Beta took over 😉

      See, that's what *I* remember - that the ENTERPRISE-A was a renamed U.S.S. TI-HO, which I believe was a new ship altogether, that had been renamed when it was given to Kirk as a sort of 'thanks' for his exemplary service (despite the token' but down back to Captain, which was more of a slap on the risk for disobeying Starfleet regulations and to "mollify" the Klingons rather than a real punishment). And that's still the way I accept it, and I was surprised when it wasn't thusly surprised in this video, since I still accepted this as canon.

    I tend to subscribe to what the Marvel Comics Star Trek The New Voyages (Five Year Mission set after the Motion Picture) had established. In the final issue, Kirk is being pressured by Admiral Morrow to take up the Admiralty again to which he flat out refuses. During the course of the issue Kirk stumbles onto a cadet ship which was attacked by an unknown alien. It is later revealed that the cadet ship attack the aliens first under some delusions of what would Kirk do. After settling things with diplomacy, Kirk takes the Admirals rank again but as Commandant of the Academy. He promotes Spock as captain of the Enterprise and reassigns them to the Academy.
    I tend to Ignore a LOT of what Moore and Braga did for MOST of Kirk's backstory in Generations as it tends to fly in the face of Kirk's character without ANY sort of context or exposition.

      @TONYGILLEY 4 роки тому +1

      @@rogeralmon Sorry for responding 4 months late, better late than never. Basically, Kirk took a rank reduction to Captain at the start of The Motion Picture. He stated to Decker that his rank reduction was temporary, implying that once the crisis was over he would regain his rank. I would speculate he'd regain of command of the Enterprise afterward but that all changed when Decker merged with V'Ger. At the end of TMP Kirk is still referred to as Captain and he tells Sulu to go "thataway" which leads to the "Untold Voyages" comic. It isn't until the beginning of the 5th issue where he's being pestered by Starfleet to take an Admiral's rank again.
      Interesting side note, in the 1992 Peter David story "Debt of Honor" set after STV, one of the flashbacks takes place just after the end of The Motion Picture where the Enterprise is surveying the damaged caused in V'Ger's wake, through that they stumble across the main plot of that book story.

      @@rogeralmon I wanted to add that there's an issue or two of DC Trek comics in the mid-80's (an Annual I think) where it covered the last adventure at the end of the Five Year Mission. It involved Kirk & Co. saving Talos 4 from the Klingons. It had Pike, Vina and introduced Decker. I don't remember the context but Kirk took the promotion to Admiral, McCoy retired and Spock left for Vulcan to undertake the Kolinar vowing to never return. The issue ends with Kirk on the bridge alone taking the gold Enterprise plaque with him as he leaves.
      If you haven't seen it I would highly recommend watching Star Trek Continues on youtube. Episodes 10 & 11 called "To Boldly Go" is what I consider the ending of TOS. Fernando Queiroz Popovic Hey, technically it’s still canon. Although Admiral Archer would have been 140 year old if he was alive, the 2009 film never referenced him being alive. It only says “Admiral Archer’s prized beagle,” it’s possible Archer had a beagle that managed to outlive him. A writer for Enterprise said that that a 132 year old Archer died at his home in upstate New York in the year 2245, exactly one day after attending the christening ceremony of the first Federation starship Enterprise (at least in the prime timeline.)
      Going off of this, it’s reasonable to assume that Archer COULD HAVE survived an extra 7 years in the kelvin timeline. OR, it’s also very possible that he was dead in the kelvin timeline, and only his beagle was still alive when Scotty beamed it away. Of course, scotty’s beaming incident happened likely a few years before the events of the 2009 film, so it’s entirely possible that in the Kelvin Timeline Archer had another beagle in the final years of his life, died in 2245 at 132 years old, and then 3 years after Scotty accidentally beamed it away.
      Now, I think it’s impossible that this beagle is Porthos.
      Anyways, there’s some sense put to Archer’s age and the reference from the JJ Abrams movie! It surprisingly actually fits in well.

    April did one five year mission. Pike did two. Kirk did one, supposedly the one that made the Enterprise famous. Now between each of these five year missions is the time it took to return to Earth and refit time. Also Kirk had command of the Enterprise before his "historic 5 Year Mission." At least two years I think, certainly one year. So it's not a simple matter of dividing those five year missions between the captains and the age of the Enterprise.

      Daniel O'Donovan True, but the alternative is that of "the most important ship relative to a group". Basically, SF in general, and Star Trek in particular, NEVER use the term "flagship" Correctly.
      Well, TNG might; if we assume Picard is a full blown Federation Diplomat and he's not just there as the Captain of the ship on behalf of Starfleet but also as a Federation Ambassador or first contact diplomat... but since that's never stated in the show that's just headcannon.
      Then again, in real life Admirals **never** actually captain a ship, so the misuse of flagship is far from the most egregious mistake in Trek.

    • @ericlanglois9194
      @ericlanglois9194 6 років тому +2

      A commodore or admiral only needs to be present when a flagship is leading a group of ships on an operation. In emergency situations a captain can fill that role. That's why the Enterprise, despite being the flagship of the federation, retains a captain as it's commanding officer most of the time. Admiral Kirk could in theory retain command of an outdated ship if his position requires that he moves around a lot, such vessels appear to be quite common in Star Trek alpha lore as most admirals command ships such as Excelsiors during the TNG era. Since the Constitution class was outdated by the time of TMP and Wrath of Khan, it's a plausible theory in my mind.

      Admirals wouldn't be flying around exploring things, they'd be busy with senior leadership roles in Starfleet.

    "These ships were captained by equally adept commanding officers.." as well as Jonathan Archer.

    I would think considering that current US aircraft carriers have a 50 year life cycle that starships should have a 100 year life.
    I would think they would be able to serve 30-50 years on the frontier with a major refit at the 25 year mark. At the 50 year mark I see another major refit followed by scaling back duties into an auxiliary fleet and training.

    I THINK THAT DURING THOSE "MISSING YEARS," NCC-1701 was first refitted and transferred to Starfleet Training Command. Spock was promoted and served as C.O., with Kirk reserving his right to use it as his Personal Flagship, but it probably didn't go too far from Earth until the Genesis Crisis, when Spock voluntarily (actually insisted upon) relinquished Command back to Kirk.
    "Flag Ships" traditionally are the ship where an Admiral may coordinate a Fleet, Flotilla, or Task Force from, while the Captain is the commanding Officer of the ship itself. (Think of it as is "mobile office")

      Yes, that would seem to have happened around 2280-85.

    In life spans Archer was the longest lived of the Captains. Doctor MCCoy was 135 on TNG.
