Bryce Young has set short kings back 20 years
They're definitely going to set like a Bryce Young floor in draft evaluations where if a QB is a certain height they need to have another amazing physical characteristic to offset that. For example Kyler has a great arm and is one of the best runners in the game.
@@unc54 even Kyler has missed a lot of games, he missed 3 in 2021, 6 in 2022, and 9 in 2023. So in the last 3 years, he has missed 18 games.

They invested $100 million in that OLine and it’s working so far.

Wentz was 9th in QBR for Indy. Until Reich is on a lie detector test, I don't believe what writers said. Football people that know Reich insist that he prefers larger QBs so it's hard to belive he would advocate for literally the smallest one.
Canales "I looked at the film" said twice. I have seen it too. Bryce has so many problems - footwork, pre and post snap reads, overthrown passes, poor decision making. I don't think he is even a project at this point.

Bryce was Tepper's pick over CJ, Now he sees that Bryce on the field isn't the guy who can do it. He loved Bryce the person more than picking Bryce the football player. The more Bryce is on the field, the more Tepper sees just how badly HIS decision is turning out to be.

Bryce is a skinny midget who is closer to being half Josh's weight than being the same weight, can't run as fast, isn't as strong, has no throw power, and can't short, intermediate or deep passes, even when they're open.

Yeah I don't understand why he keeps going on about what they gave up. Yeah they gave up a lot but the kid has been absolutely terrible, missing wide open receiver's on a 10 yard throw. I've watched all the games and he hasn't progressed one bit. He has been worse this season and that's with a much improved OLine and better receiving options.

I will always respect a team going look. Rosen as another example or Young is clearly not the guy or isn't right now. Lets not sacrifice our teams future trying to placate peoples ego.

Well because it's still only been 2 games and like he was saying they put so much into him that this could potentially ruin that whole relationship before anything really got started... he's been awful for sure but if you're gonna try to build a team around him then might as well give it a bit longer
I think it's moreso of what the Panthers gave up than anything else. One would think the Panthers would exhaust all avenues before making this decision. Having said that, Young is overwhelmed physically and most importantly mentally. Quarterback is the one position you have to be mentally strong in order to be successful.
Young is a prime example of someone who needs to sit at least 2 years. He needs to bulk up and get more reps in practice the and preseason.

As a Chargers fan who got his first full game view of Bryce Young on Sunday. My only thought about this situation and hearing people like Rich in the industry saying how surprising it is: OBVIOUSLY RIch hasn't really watched the dude play! He has no business being on that field, period. It's so unfortunate seeing a guys life long dream BLOW UP in real time. But seriously, he looks like a boy among MEN.

Bryce should probably be happy about this. He's done in Carolina and so I suspect the only team that would pick him up is a team that wants him and can either a) use him or b) develop him. Bryce isn't developing in Carolina. Not saying he'll be great but at least he has a chance elsewhere.

His comp is probably Tua but 3 inches shorter with slightly more ability. He's not a top flight QB but a competent team with the right pieces can probably win quite a few games with him.

Because he is in a bad situation. Remember how Sam Darnold saw ghosts? Bryce is seeing ghosts. That's what happens to lots of very young QBs in bad situations. You think if Tua was drafted now to Carolina he'd be any good? Carolina has the worst non QB offense in the league.

Bryce won’t throw the ball anywhere beyond 3 yards. If you only watch one play against the chargers go look at 4th and 18. Thats how it was the entire game.
*Part* of the lesson here has to be that when evaluating QBs coming out of college, you have to consider their skill position / o-line teammates _and_ the strength (/weakness) of their opponents. This isn't the full story by any means (Young might look 2x better with Detroit or Houston's weapons), but I think it's safe to say that Bryce's success at Alabama hinged very significantly on his teammates/Saban's system.
It helps but didn’t stroud have that too? And I don’t watch a ton of college but I watched quite a bit of Bryce and he had all the intangibles and accuracy and feel. He has touch on his passes, can layer the ball, anticipation. I knew he would be limited because of his size (weight being even more a worry than height) but I didn’t see this. He actually looks broken to me. Personally I don’t think that’s the players around him made him “look better” but I do think he’s lost a lot of his confidence for sure
In fairness, playing in the SEC for three years should count for something regarding preparation for the NFL. I guess not.
There is no key to evaluating anyone especially QBs.
Mental is 90% of the game and that is something no one can evaluate because that is an unknown.
Find five QBs that played under Saban who played well in the NFL.
There are three great in the NFL QBs who played at Alabama and those guys played in the 1950s and 1960s. Those QB were Bart Starr, Joe Namath, and Kenny Stabler.

Rookies and most vets will struggle if you put then on a team with a bad system and crap roster.

Bryce Young is no Troy Aikman or Peyton Manning.
Anyone who has ever seen him play knows that.
Most of these people that support Bryce have never seen him play at Carolina. They just think that, because Carolina has Tepper that he had no shot to begin with, but the roster is improved over last year. Andy played great in this same offense last year, this same offense without Canales, without the people they added in the offseason. And still showed more than game than Bryce has shown in 16+ games.

Peyton Manning struggled early in his career. He had 28 interceptions his rookie year.

Benching is not surprising. Bryce is not all enough - he almost is not visible when surrounded by the larger O-line guys in the huddle. When a QB is picked number 1 overall, he is expected to really perform in a team that has some element of talent such as the Panthers. Also the overall issue with Carolina is that there is no accountability, and due to the changes in coaching and management personel not one can be help accountable this year.
I like this take. I personally think Bryce didn't need to be great or even good this last or the next. He just needed to show promise, but when you can't even throw for 100 yards when you're pressured on only 4 of your drop backs, as a second year player, then you're just not an NFL caliber QB. When you're getting outplayed by fossils like Andy Dalton, Joe Flacco, and no bodies like Tommy Cutlets, as a #1 overall pick, you have a problem.
Sunk cost fallacy. Everyone bringing up how much has been invested in Bryce Young as a reason to keep giving him chances is falling into it. He has shown zero improvement and even regression in almost every area. Yes you should give a QB 3 years if, ok I-F, he's showing improvement from game to game, season to season. This does not mean keep giving a QB regressing 3 years worth of chances and hope a miracle happens.
Jack Plummer sucked game 1, got better game 2, balled out game 3 in the pre season. That improvement to me should put him at qb2 behind Dalton for a season or 2. Bryce is just not the guy. Everyone banging on the entire offense but without a qb that can complete a pass over 2 yards, teams can stack the box and crush the run game.
There's a good chance they benched him to protect him. If you look that lost out there, there's a greater risk of injury.

NFL teams need to stop trying to start rookie QBs and instead sit them for a year and develop them because colleges aren't doing it these days.
Bryce Young hasn't proved that he can make an NFL throw. So the whole Carolina Panthers team (that have family and careers of their own) need to sacrifice their time in hopes that Bryce young can do something, maybe some day? There's 52 other players on the team. Not to mention coaches. Just to remind you.
From a GM perspective, Bryce is now just trade capital waiting for a team that is desperate for a QB due to injury. This is probably the best way to keep his value up because more bad tape will hurt his value.

Dude was a rock star QB since he was very young. Did nothing but succeed and win while being lauded the whole time. He hasn't really dealt with adversity on the football field till he got to the league. Went from always having one of the best supporting casts possible to one of the worst. Any talent and "intangibles" that got him to the NFL are currently being buried by his seeming loss of confidence.
Chris Brockman said a mouthful when he said The Carolina Panthers aren't a well enough run organization to fix Bryce Young .
Bryce Young is an extremely undersized system QB who does not have anywhere near the generational athletic skills of someone like a Michael Vick or Kyler Murray to overcome his severe physical shortcomings to be successful playing the most difficult position in professional sports.
Since the 1990 NFL draft, only TWO out of the 22 quarterbacks drafted with the #1 overall pick have won a Super Bowl with the team that drafted them - Peyton Manning and Eli Manning. (Colts - SB XLI / Giants - SB XLII and XLVII)
The fans and the team has given up on Bryce and once that happens it's all over.

You could see some of his teammates during the game throwing their hands in the air like WTF. I'm sure Canales can read the locker room.
I saw one of two victories Bryce led the Panthers to. I happened to be in Charlotte for the Famous Toastery Bowl the next day, and after finishing up at the NASCAR hall of fame, convinced my Dad to walk the mile and see the Panthers and Falcons play. It was cold and raining, but we are football guys. I hopped on Ticketmaster and we both got in right behind the bench for a combined $4.87.
While it was raining, both QBs were fairly incompetent in Bryce Young and Desmond Ridder. Bryce made fewer mistakes, but Carolina never scored a touchdown and they didn’t lead until time expired on the game winning field goal. Final score 9-7.
I was at that game and paid $52. But I got to sit on the bench with the O line. I was the guy in the bright orange cap.
Sorry, but Bryce is just not that good. His arm is not that strong, he's not that accurate, does not get rid of the ball quickly and not that good with his legs, plus he's too small.

You are wrong Rich. Troy Aikman was benched during his rookie year and replaced by Steve Walsh. As a matter of fact, Walsh was the QB that got Dallas' lone victory during the 1989 season, not Aikman
Watching Bryce play this year, Canales had zero choice. It was either sit him down or the locker room would have imploded 3 games into being a head coach
JT Osullivan and Chase Daniel have both done the game film on him, I suggest people actually watch that rather than listen to these people who aren't watching the games. Bryce is the problem, he has a top 10 oline and a decent receiving core

@@kerley1323 The stats came out, the panthers were 5th in clean pocket rate (only behind the jets, bucs, falcons, and dolphins). It's not the o-lines fault in terms of pass block.

I think the veterans on the team voiced their displeasure with the direction the offense was taking. The defensive unit should not be espected tp play 50 minutes of the game while the offense is three and out.
To give up so much compensation for a #1 pick and then give up on him after only 18 games. That is not Young's fault, that's on the management

There's a chance he'll be a Darnold or a Mayfield but probably more likely a Trey Lance or Josh Rosen or Jamarcus Russell or Zack Wilson. There's far more QB's who fail than succeed.
You're still under the impression the Panthers did this because Bryce can't win. They did this because in 18 games, he averages a completion percentage of less than 60, 5 yards per attempt, and has a QBR of 30 last year, an QBR of 9 this year. Wanna know what the worst bust in NFL had, at his worst, as a QBR rating? A 19.A fucking 19. At Jamarcus Russel's worst, he still had a QBR better than Bryce's horrid 9, and it was barely worse than his rookie year 30. Bryce is a bust, but the Panthers organization suck even more for trading so much to pick him in the first place.

It took Terry Bradshaw almost 5 yrs to round into form. Took the Steelers to 4 SB's. Jim McMahon? 3 yrs. Jim Kelly? 6 yrs. John Elway? 3 yrs. Brett Favre? 3 yrs. Teams just don't have patience anymore.
None of those guys were as bad as Bryce. He can't complete a pass over 5 yards, he doesn't have very good arm strength, he doesn't have height to see over the line. The top of his helmet is literally at his o linemen's name plates lol. And a crucial thing he lacks is drive. There's no kinda spark in him to ignite his teammates and get em pumped to play with him. In fact, his teammates have given up on him for being so bad. So to put him in the same paragraph as any of those guys is a huge injustice to a handful of legends that each had something going for them like big arms, prototype size, a will to win lol.. not just that they won in college on a stacked team.

In the visits leading up to the Draft, you could see a stark difference in the interactions the coaching staff had with Bryce and CJ, including the QB Coach (name slipping my mind) telling CJ "we'll have to find a court in Charlotte to play HORSE". They didnt want Bryce, Mrs. Tepper wanted Bryce, the football guys wanted CJ.
Andy Dalton threw for 361 yards in his lone start Young’s last 4 starts 84, 161, 94, and 112
18 Games in, and the kid is an absolute dumpster fire here. Sunken costs are mounting, cut your losses, and move on. He was the least pressured QB of week 2 and couldn't throw over 90 yards, and again, this is his 18th game, not his 2nd. He'd be better playing for a veteran coach who can bring whatever skill everyone else saw up. I was a CJ Stroud bandwagoner back at draft time, and I have been proven right all along. This is the right call, Young is not the man for the job in Carolina. 2 coaches couldn't produce with him, but I recall Andy Dalton in Seattle, week 3 2023, had this team looking competent.

If you watch the way bryce played in college, he stood far back behind his offensive line so he could see over it. In.
College, his line was literally aligned and nobody broke through it. In The NFL you have a pocket. The edge rushers get pushed around you. And if you run backwards, you get sacked. That's why they call the phrase standing tall in the pocket. So you can see over the o line.

I’ve been a Carolina fan for my whole life and I for one am mad that they benched Bryce. Not because I think he’s any good but because with Bryce starting we will continue to lose and give us the best shot at the #1 overall pick. Darnold might actually win some games. Additionally, Bryce “could” figure it out or suck terribly but either way we find out what kind of player we actually have. Terrible decision to bench. The coach is just trying to save his job.
Coach has a 6 year deal. He's not going anywhere. Bryce was playing so bad it made it impossible to evaluate the rest of the roster.

People are confusing what Rich is saying he is surprised by. It's not that Bryce isn't good. He literally said he was bad. He is surprised at the number 1 draft picked being benched so fast. The number of games total. Hence, why he referenced the other quarterbacks, draft capital, and talent they gave up just to move off Bryce so quickly. That's his point.
By the end.. Young was looking shell shocked and just going through the motions. He was getting worse!

I am a bit confused about this situation. Why has it taken the coaches 18 games to decide to bench him? Seems the owner is telling the coaches who to play and not letting the coaches coach. Or is it the other way the coaches are terrible also?

I don’t think this was Tepper’s decision. Canales hadn’t seen the tape on Sunday night but after watching it it was obvious. Watch the tape. Canales has a whole team to develop. Xavier Legette, Jonathon Brooks, and Ja’Tavion Sanders need to develop. This isn’t the Bryce Young Panthers. He needs to sit and watch for this year and maybe next year he’s ready to take a step.
100% this. Coddling a failed pet project of the owners wife is going to cost him the rest of the team and his job. Bryce has a ton of flaws in his game that i personally don't see being fixed in 3 years much less 1. I'd rather see Plummer out there than Bryce. At least in his 3 games he got better each outing and can complete a pass over 3 yards
You can just see it with quarterbacks. The results don't necessarily align at first, but when they've got "it" you can tell. I think too many teams linger on misses simply because of the draft commitment, and they throw away 5 years in the process.

Just being first overall doesn’t mean they have to start especially with rookie salary caps. Most of the great quarterbacks sat for a while and learned how to QB in the NFL

Rich doesn’t seem to be all that smart on this. Benching Young IS how to fix him. Continuing to play him will only damage him further. He is grossly overmatched right now. You don’t learn how to hit a 95mph fastball during games. You work in the cage until you show that you’re ready. Same thing here. Young is so overwhelmed that he isn’t learning or developing during games. He needs to practice until he’s ready.
I live in Charlotte, the issue is…who’s gonna make the number one pick for our team next year? Coach…gm….owner? We don’t trust any of them anymore. If we miss on the next first pick, then what? There’s no light at the end of the tunnel. We are scared the team is gonna move bc it’s such a train wreck

You can't teach height, you can't teach speed, you can't teach arm strength. Bryce Young has none of those things.

If you are a talented college quarterback, there are several teams by which you just must NOT let yourself be drafted....Carolina, NY Jets, Cleveland....and especially, the graveyard of aspiring young QB's....Chicago [who am I forgetting]. NEVER....No matter what. Do an Eli Manning on them, or whatever it takes, but for the sake of the Lord, DON'T GO THERE.
The day you are drafted by one of these teams, is the day you begin your career descent into Hades.
Plain and simple, 5'10" 190 should NEVER have been chosen that high. If he had not played at Alabama, he was a 2nd round pick at best!
