Omg I relate so much!! I've already had 3 tests last week and I have so much more homework on top of making all of my anki flashcards. The jump in difficulty was also a shock because I now need to go over content multiple times to understand concepts but In shaa Allah it will all be worth it

Omg the year 13 struggle hahahah!! Excited to watch this and see how you’re doing :)
Yup I know right I can defo feel the step up especially because of UCAS!! Luckily I managed to submit mine to school yesterday - it’s the best feeling 😊 I’d say year 12 is a much bigger step up due to differences and getting used to things, but as you said year 13 is much more in the deep end!!
And bio IKRRRR I’m doing photosynthesis right now and it’s so hard 😩 still loving my subjects though 🙌

It’s a lot, but I know that if I push through this gruelling ucas process, then at least things will ease a tiny bit. Photosynthesis though God help 😖.

I feel like so many people find A2 Biology such a jump up is because they usually start with photosynthesis. I'm so glad that my school started with respiration, because it's MUCH easier than photosynthesis and photosynthesis builds on respiration knowledge (e.g. chemiosmosis is much easier to understand within oxidative phosphorylation than within light-dependent reactions, and Calvin cycle is similar to Krebs cycle), so photosynthesis was actually pretty easy when I finally got around to it.
But yeah, Year 13 is so much busier than Year 12, especially for medics! Expect your grades to drop right now, but if you continue your habits from Year 12, they will come back!

I've made this so bad for myself - 4 A-levels with bio, chem, maths and further maths; med applicant and I got my BMAT in like 9 days. Everyone's got this - for early applicants, it will get better (it has got to!)

*TW RANT 😭* (Ignore my spelling haha)
First week of holidays i was exhausted so i took a break, went on holiday for 2 weeks (i had no choice 😭) then i only had 2 weeks to revise for my ucat, and complete my summer homework which were 2 chemistry booklets, 2 60 page research booklets for economics, 2 25 markers, 2 15 markers for econ and then 6 bio past papers all while revising for ucat. then i procastinated on half of that so i only had the 3 days after my ucat before school to complete it (i still got told off by my teachers cuz apparently we didnt do enough revision). First two lessons of y13 i had 2 exams which i did alr in and they said that it was not good enough although they know me and my friends are med appllicants, then my teachers said theres no point of applying to it cuz they think im not gonna get in (they also didnt pay for my ucat or help me with anything med aplications related). Then my teachers gave a 3 day- 1 week notice for my mocks which will go towards my predicted grades and said we had summer to revise for them (WHICH WE DID NOT CUZ OF THE AMOUNT OF HW THEY GAVE 💀🔪) then my chemistry teacher also decided that it would be a good idea to include year 13 content in our AS predicted mocks for some odd reason??? And to top that off she said that she wont predict us one grade higher and will only predict what we get (so if i get a b she wont predict me an a or if i get a u she will predict us a U even if throught the year we got C/Bs. Oh and not to mention i have two weeks to write my personal statement, choose my unis, apply, sit the bmat and revise for it (only God knows how ill do that) and then kms 🥰(sorry for the rant lolllllllll im stressssed af) i have my bio mock tmrw (which is on the whole of as content and i have only had 3 days to prepare so pray for me )

I feel you so much. This entire process has been exhausting and it looks like you were done very dirty with homework across the holidays. I got set a ton of maths homework which I had to juggle with my UCAT as well as PS and all the rubbish. It’s such a painstaking process but we’re all going through it together, if that makes you feel a little better. If it ever gets too much, just take a step back and think about all your options because even if things don’t go well, there are so many options and so many things to do. Just don’t lose yourself in this period because it’s a very demanding time, but all this UCAS stuff will go away very very soon, and you’ll be thankful in the future if you push through it now. Honestly best of luck and I’m wishing that you get through this period with minimal stress. Just make sure you stay happy and healthy, easier said then done, but having an unhealthy routine etc. is going to have a knock on effect on everything else.

SAME to everything you said! I'm not an early applicant but I am doing all the same subjects as you and its only the second week and I've already had a big mock on maths (statistics ew) and biology and chemistry and weve only just started. I feel as though if they atleast gave us a week or so to ease our way back in without throwing exams in our faces it would make things so much easier because we would get time to organise ourselves and i guess "get ready" for year 13. Personally I found the jump from year 11 to 12 harder because the first few months felt like I was just carrying on from GCSE but as soon as it hit January all my subjects (esp bio and chem) became unexpectedly so much more harder and i ended up burning out from march onwards whereas this year I tried to mentally prepare myself for how hard it was going to be which so far it is quite overwhelming but I'm trying to create a schedule and inshallah stick to it. Good luck for bmat and for year 13!

Ikr!! Its so much all of a sudden but you know what I think im slowly starting to get myself adjusted as long as I keep up on things and stay organised. one thing i'd like to add for year 12s is to start looking into unis around spring of your year 12 year, then you can plan for open days. unis have them running during early summer and during autumn, some of them have overlapping open days so choose which ones you prefer, narrow down your list and plan ahead for which open days to book !!

If I were to recommend any Universities as I am also aspiring med applicant and I managed to visit every Russel Group (except for QMUL, Nottingham and York) and here are my top 7:
    1. Newcastle (Pros: Overall best open day- facilities in terms of integrated style, and practical aspects such as shadowing consultants in a range of disciplines every year, also the biggest medical school and studying medicine abroad in year 2 and year 4 (if one of top rankers) in Malaysian campus. Cons: Highest UCAT threshold in country and need 2830+ this year I think, competition is also very high not due to requirements but due to the amount of people who apply, Durham and Newcastle University also have reputation as “Oxbridge rejects” due to 50% of cohort being made up of this)
    2. Oxford (Pros: My first choice- best medschool in the world via rankings and experiences of studying in oxbridge are invaluable, maybe a bit bias as my sis studies there, also very social; Cons: clinical experiences/patient contact doesnt start until year 4 and first three years of teaching style is very essay based and monotonous and workload is massive- also place in clinical school isn’t guranteed so competition doesnt even stop when you’ve been accepted as an undergraduate, also accomodation; interviews are impossible to get)
    3. Kings College London/UCL (Pros: One of the most social unis, where’s there’s a balance of both social life and work and both well connected to the London Hospital system which are the biggest in the UK; Cons: No cons except possibly living in London is expensive especially live elsewhere in England like I do being from Manchester)
    4. Kings College London/UCL (both 3rd and 4th, cant decide the order)
    5. Cambridge (Pros: most picturesque university in the UK, certain college if you are lucky have the most amazing accomodation in the UK such as Jesus College and also connections and experiences in Cambridge, also interviews are easy to get even with average BMAT; Cons: Social aspects are very small due to Cambridges size and the university experience is limited due to amount of pressures with work being research based- I would recommend an EPQ if you apply here. Entry requirements are very very hard with cambridge giving discretion that they are able to increase it from A*A*A TO A*A*A* (and even another A* if you are doing 4 alevels).
    6. Manchester/Leeds (Pros: the University experience is most evident here and overall are most friendly unis, also relatively cheap living expenses; Cons: Over-applied)
    7. Imperial (Pros: one the best universities in the world to study medicine Cons: the most expensive university to study in the UK and teaching style is so robotic and intense and are even more overworked than Oxbridge)
If you want to know about any more Unis let me know?

Hey Nouman, this video was definitely worth watching, I couldn't agree less with hearing other peoples experiences, I was wanting to ask that do you think enrichment is very important to do besides your academic studies when studying a-levels, as my college doesn't offer epq sadly and their enrichment involves sports, I was just thinking to take on enrichment in year 12. Could you please give me advice regarding what enrichment you took part during year 12, what you would recommend and ur advice??? as I know having good grade and no extracurricular could limit my entry for medicine/dentistry in the future a lot :(

    • @NoumanSami
      @NoumanSami  11 місяців тому

Hi, thanks so much! A lot of teachers say to do extracurriculars for your university application but I’ll be honest, they don’t help at all, especially for medicine. Most unis just want to see what things you’ve done medicine related, or that show the qualities that they’re looking for. These qualities you can get from extracurriculars but you can also get them from other things as well such as work experience, volunteering etc. don’t treat it as a checklist where you try and get as many things possible done, instead try and do whatever you find enjoyable and go from there.
