This was written by the late singer Lonnie Donnigan, who gave it to Tom to sing as he said he would do a better job than himself. In 2019, Lonnie's son, Peter appeared on UK TV series 'The Voice' where Sir Tom Jones was a judge and the now 79 year old sang this as a song duetting with Peter and a version of that is on UA-cam. He sang it brilliantly and has lost nothing from his voice with old age.
Yes, there is a distinction and I liaised with Peter, who seems a lovely Guy, on UA-cam because some, incorrectly, think that this was written for Sir Tom but he was an unknown called Tom Woodward in the Welsh "Tommy Scott Orchestra" when this was released.:)

Tom Jones was knighted by Her Majesty the Queen in 2006, an honour he deeply cherishes. An honour he was able to celebrate once again in 2012 when he performed at the Queens Diamond Jubilee concert at Buckingham Palace.
Great disecting...as a singer myself, I learned that how you deliver a song is very important, because it allows the listener to play in the story...and nobody has ever done it better, than Tom Jones...hands down.

Tom Jones used to sing with our John Farnham for fun. Then I was watching John sing at a concert and a big screen behinds John started. It was Tom singing Happy Birthday to John. I love them singing My Yiddish Mama on Hey Het it’s Saturday. Tom and John didn’t know they would be singing that night but they did it. It was beautiful and funny. I love Tom and I have since I was a child. Thank you.

I remember. This Welsh lad with the risque English name started out as a joke in the industry. But the sheer power of his voice and his stage presence made him every bit as magnetic as Elvis. Still is.

Lonnie Donegan, the man who wrote this was the reason that both John Lennon and Paul McCartney picked up a guitar and started making music. Without this man and his influence on the Beatles, music today could have looked very different.

Just a pc of gossip. Tom recently ran into the son of this song’s writer at voice. And they sang this song together. Im watching the Delilah now. Love loved it. Great dance music.
You should see the live video of Mad Dogs and Englishmen(joe cocker) singing Delta Lady. The piano player(Leon Russell)is the author, and the subject is the background singer Rita Cooledge. Everyone In that band went on to have huge solo careers. You would do well to listen to his studio version of Woman to Woman. I forgot Space Captain, also a must watch. I apologize in advance for sending you down the Leon Russell rabbit hole. Or should I?
