Murray Gold's compositions for Doctor Who are some of the most incredible examples musical theming there has ever been. The way the show will weave motifs in ways that sometimes you don't even notice it's doing is masterful. It's so damn moving.
I love how "The Doctor" theme was expanded ONLY when Ecclestone gave his life to save Rose. It's like he was hiding his Doctor nature, but had shown it only in the end...
Actually… No, I don’t think it was. It was extended when he talked about Gallifrey in episode 2, and the full version was used again in Boom Town while he noticed the name Bad Wolf following him.

Still one of the smartest decisions any writer ever made in doctor who was the destruction of galafrey and the daleks, made for a perfect starting point, literally didnt have to remember anything from old who and allowed the doctor to reintroduce things from his past whenever he felt comfortable opening up and a writer wanted to re-establish something
@@Big_Bad_Gammon yeah it felt like we were all set for another massive journey to finding and saving galafrey again and then in the space of like 2 seasons the doctor finds galafrey, the master destroys it and the doctor turns out to be an ancient alien...davies seems like he is trying to work the whole orphan angle now, calling into question the doctors parents so that might go somewhere.

I don't care that they changed The Doctor's/Gallifrey's backstory (it happens all the time in Doctor Who and this is like the third retcon). I just hate that it undid everything the 50th set out to do and sort of made the 50th redundant.
It's interesting to see how it's always the melody on vocals for 9. But immediately 10 gets it on flute as well as throughout the orchestra in his run. Like he's moving on more from how single minded he was as 9

I don't just associate The Doctor's Theme with one or two particular incarnations, I see it as a theme for *all* incarnations - the Doctor as a whole. Despite its complete absence in the Thirteenth Doctor era, I'm glad they used it for Jodie Whittaker's debut at the end of Twice Upon a Time, plus bringing it back in The Star Beast (multiple times) which really warmed my heart.
Oh wow, I didn't expect to be hit so hard by the use of it in Last of the Time Lords, with Martha telling everyone the Doctor is the important one, not her. Yet she's the one that ultimately saves the world by episode's end. Martha's such a real one, vastly underrated.
Hearing that melody in that children in need short right after the regeneration into tennant before the Chrismas invasion really helped my kid brain understand it was the same person. This melody holds a special place in my memory and always will.
I feel like in 9's run the theme haunts him. He is fresh out from the war and all that haunts him in that incarnation. And as 10 lives on it starts to sound more and more as prominent as he comes to term with it, it doesnt sound like a haunting theme anymore. He has accepted it.

I did notice one absence, another instance of that woman singing when River whispers the Doctor's name in his ear. Though, I can't remember whether that's from the first part or second part of the story so it may count as a duplication in your eyes.
There is 1 missing use from The Sarah Jane Adventures - Revenge of the Slitheen Pt. 2 when the Father Slitheen explains that they’re here to avenge the family from Aliens of London/World War Three

I know that this is The Doctor’s definitive theme but it was originally 9’s but even though it was 9’s I still find it very hard to tell the difference between 9’s theme and 10’s theme

I can’t really hear it in the impossible astronaut same with tpateotw. the doctor, the widow, and the wardrobe is a different theme same as in time of the doctor. Apart from that brilliant compilation!! Always forget how many times this theme creeps up in the series and in expanded

I hope next time Murray Gold leaves the show, this theme is still able to pop up from time to time, it feels like a core part of Doctor Who's Identity and the music during Chibnall era just felt wrong
I've just had a thought that's a crazy theory, you know the storyline Bad wolf that went from the episode boom to the parting of the ways. My theory is that Russell T Davis wrote bad wolf by predicting the future with bad wolf studios. That's happening now! 😮😂

I was expecting this to change when we got to Matt Smith to "I am The Doctor" (and then same for Capaldi and Jodie). I don't really think there's one "The Doctor" theme. The theme in the video is just the theme for 9 and 10.

And also to be fair, I probably should have realised this video wasn't doing the use of each Doctor's theme, because if it did it would be 3 hours comprising mostly of Matt Smith with "I am the Doctor" in the background!
