    hello you Potter's, for the last few weeks you've been doing glaze review videos and I forgot that I deleted the video about how to make glaze test tiles on the Wheel super easy.
    so this one's kind of a redo video that has a lot more explanation.

    Have you ever seen Star Trek 'Trouble with Tribbles?" Yes, test tiles are like tribbles. They are cute and multiply.

    Love this. Thanks to you, I've been using this technique for a while. I've made hundreds of tiles like this and it's great.

    Holy crap I teach ceramics and this test tile method is such a great idea! so much easier than the slabs that I have been making for years! Thank you.

    Hi there! Thank you for this great video. I just pulled 12 test tiles of the batt this afternoon. This method worked like a charm.

    Thanks for this video. I couldn't figure out what I was doing wrong when trying to open up the donut. I kept trying to flatten the clay to as wide as I wanted the edge of the donut before opening. I didn't realize I could open up PAST where it was to begin with on the wheel head. My ring kept coming out super wobbly. I'll try this next time.

      Same here, struggled for a couple of afternoons before I realized it can be done much easier this way 😂

    I skip the test tile and use a piggy bank, textured mug and flower pot with base to test my glaze. I can see what the glaze does over a large surface and several layers. If the glaze fails the piggy bank and flower pot are still good and I only loose a mug.

    In the example, the vertical cuts distort the form. To avoid that wait til the thrown piece firms-up a little. When cutting, aim the knife towards the wheel’s center point. Ideally the cut will be radial. Be conscious of the vertical cut, and try to make it straight up and down (square). Otherwise, the tile may be physically and aesthetically unbalanced.

      That's a fair point.
      Although I will say I don't think anyone really cares if they are perfectly straight seeing as they are just for tests.

    Very nice!
    Can you tell me whats the bedt way to get it off the wheel if you dont have bats?
    I guess the best way would be to cut it with the wire like you did while spnning the wheel and then let it dry on the wheel, right?
    Thank you for your amazing artwork, greetings from austria!!!

    I did this successfully bc of your video and am about to bisque fire my tiles. So thanks again! Question: what is your method of marking these to remember which glazes you use on each tile? Do you write on them with UG, or.... ??

    • @EarthNationCeramics
      @EarthNationCeramics  3 роки тому +2

      you can either write them down with underglaze or you can just wait until they're done completely firing for your one test and make sure to Mark them. Nowadays I just write on duct tape and put them on the inside of the tile

      I may be a little ocd but I keep track of how many test tiles I've made of a specific clay body and number them on the bottom with a needle when they are leather hard. Then i write down on my notebook what glaze I am using for each tile. Or if I lose a tile firing or something like that I cross out that number.
      You can also use underglaze to mark numbers.
      If you do a lot of firing with many glazes I suggest you try out the insight live software

    Why can't you wire off the entire donut as usual before slicing? (Sorry if this is a dumb question - making tiles today)

    • @EarthNationCeramics
      @EarthNationCeramics  4 роки тому +2

      You can do that but sometimes the testiles will move and run into each other.
      I tried doing it a few times and I at least ruin one test out doing it that way if I pull the string too hard
