People have been saying the Beatles are overrated since punk rock in the 70s. It's nothing new.
Peter Kaminsky yeah they are
People just want to say something that they think is new or cool...

Shakespeare can’t write and Michelangelo can’t paint. Am I edgy yet?
Nicht von dieser Welt they started as one of the best pop bands of their time, and turned to one of the most important and influential bands of all time while continuing to make even better music
@Nicht von dieser Welt seriously? fuck off you are sick
then, they heard bob dylan and then started writing more 'serious' lyrics.
they heard the byrds and changed their style to reflect the folk-rock movement this would be the rubber soul-revolver era of the beatles.
roger McGuinn saw george harrison was playing a rick guitar. McGuinn got a rick. he made innovations to the guitar changing the way it sounded. then, george harrison started playing the rick like McGuinn. frank zappa did an album called freak out. it inspired McCartney to wnat to make a 'psychedelic' album. McC even contacted zappa about the matter. while recording sgt. pepper they listened to pet sounds. paul McC has said the most perfect song he ever wrote was 'here, there and everywhere'. he said he did not write it, it just flowed out of him. he said it was his attempt to write a beach boys song.in CA girls the bb mention girls from different regions of the usa. mike love was present when john and/or paul were writing back in the ussr. love suggested that they mention girls from different regions of russia. thus the song has backing vocals like the bb. ringo starr can NOT sing. after the release of harrison's dark horse album critics called his singing abilities 'dark hoarse.' harrison never wanted to become a singer prior to the group. he could not sing. john lennon has one of the worst voices ever; it is all nasally. paul can sing and he can write VERY melodic music. his lyrics HOWEVER are pretty much just silly love songs. the beatles generally did not write personal songs. every so often they did, but it was the exception and not the rule. they generally wrote generic love songs which is one of the reasons they were popular. their lyrics can not compare to those of the (early) who, the kinks, the velvet underground, the doors, etc.
well into their careers the beatles were still writing, recording silly songs such as yellow submarine, octopus's garden, for the benefit of mr. kite (inspired by a circus poster) , good morning, good morning (inspired by a breakfast cereal commercial), lucy in the sky with diamonds (inspired by a children's drawing) and i am the walrus which was gibberish cobbled together by lennon from 3 songs he could not finish. also, side 2 of abbey road is rubbish; consisting of songs they could not complete.
Michael Sieger Shakespeare is a bunch of cheesey overdramatic soap opera bulshit. Michaelangalo is decent, but overrated. Rapheal is my favorite turtle.
the Beatles can't be rated high enough and i'm not even that big of a fan.

The Beatles were the first band to do stadium concerts, and are the originators of music videos as we know them today. Albums such as Revolver and Sgt. Peppers were revolutionary, employing radical new recording techniques which influenced music for all decades to come. They brought music to the mainstream in terms of it being a mainstay of popular culture. Their importance cannot be understated.

Beatles overrated?.. a bit late for that assessment aren't we, considering EVEN TO THIS DAY (50 years since they broke up) every band is measured to them
That speaks more to a cultural brainwashing than rather than being a legitimate testament to any greatness on part of the band.
Nothing Really The Beatles are the greatest band ever, even a new born baby knows that, It’s like a fact

Alvaro Elias It keeps changing, for now its Wish You Were Here..
It's gotta be Meddle
WYWH is the correct answer. There isn't a bad or even mediocre moment on that album. The Wall has too much filler, DSOTM has On the run and Any colour you like which fall short when compared to the rest of the album. Animals comes closest

I don't consider the Beatles to be overrated. I mean, I don't see how a band could be overrated when they essentially laid a foundation for an entire culture of Pop music to come. They were not only innovators (in the studio, song-writing, instrumentation, production methods, marketing, etc.), but they were also highly influential to generations of different musicians, even ones that aren't a part of the Rock n Roll culture. Even rappers cite the Beatles as influences. They paved the way for British musicians to become accepted here in America, which gave us the Rolling Stones, the Who, David Bowie, Led Zeppelin, Black Sabbath, Iron Maiden, Elvis Costello, Elton John, Queen, etc.
I honestly feel like the only reason people say they're overrated is simply because the kinds of music they put out just isn't to their personal liking/taste, which is understandable. But one must understand that without the Beatles, popular music as we currently know it would hardly exist.
Afro'd Avenger Music Reviews Elvis laid tbe ground for pop music....Wtf are you talking about😂😂😂
People who think the Beatles are overated have only listened to anything before Rubber Soul.
Steady Mobbin' wtf, Elvis copied black music. He didn't do anything original. I'm not even a Beatles fan but I acknowledge the impact they had at the time and the way they pushed pop music forward. Elvis was just a white guy doing black music and making it palatable to white racist audiences.

I don't know if I'm just weird as fuck but I don't like Abbey Road. Sgt Peppers, revolver, the white album, and let it be are all so much better imo, and I just can't put Abbey Road up with those albums, I just don't get it.
I’d have to agree that the white album is probably the best from a non subjective manner. It combines the experimentational and conceptual ideals of sgt pepper with a back to basics approach inspired by their earlier days as a group. It was the height of the collaborative process between the four of them. During the let it be and abbey road sessions the group began to go downhill as Paul began to take a dictatorial approach, John got sick of being in a group and more focused on politics and George was much more interested in spiritual pursuits.
That being said revolver is my favourite because to me it was the album where their creativity truly began to blossom, with some of their best singles such as rain, paperback writer and day tripper being released around the same time.
I’m also curious as to what fantmano would say

Finally somebody said it

The worser it is the betterer it is.

Here's my thoughts on just the title "The Beatles are overrated" before I even watch the video.
Look at the Wikipedia page about Strawberry Fields Forever and read the list of instruments they played (or even better read the book Revolution In The Head). Who else has ever used a swarmandal on a song outside of Indian music? Who else could tell you what a swarmandal even is? That's just one of the instruments they used. There must be a dozen others. And they all work together to make a beautiful piece of music.
It's become popular to dismiss their early songs but they were works of genius too. Try playing one on guitar sometime and I guarantee there will be a chord in there somewhere you won't be expecting.
If you don't like The Beatles that's fine, but learn the difference between overrated and not liking something. If you're going to say they're overrated than think about what they're rated as being good at and tell me why they're bad at it. They're rated for catchy songs, inventiveness and in later years musical experimentation. If you're going to accuse them of being overrated then explain where they failed using your in depth musical knowledge. If you're unable to do that then stick to saying "I don't like The Beatles".
wtf is a swarmandal
Hell yeah they were very talented musicians. What's crazy is they didn't know music theory

The fact that so many books still name Anthony Fantano as "the greatest or most significant or most influential" musical critic ever only tells you how far musical criticism still is from becoming a serious art. Jazz artists have long recognized that the greatest jazz critics of all times are Stanley Crouch and Nat Hentoff, who were not the most famous or richest or best critics of their times, let alone of all times. Classical artists rank the highly controversial Anthony Tommasini over classical critics who were highly popular in publications around Europe. Rock artists are still blinded by commercial success. Anthony Fantano had more views than anyone else (not true, by the way), therefore he must have been the greatest. Jazz artists grow up listening to a lot of jazz criticism of the past, classical artists grow up listening to a lot of classical criticism of the past. Rock artists are often totally ignorant of the rock critics of the past, they barely know the best critiques. No wonder they will think that Anthony Fantano did anything worthy of being saved.

The Beatles took the fame they had and used it as leverage to push a more artistic and complex music writing style, all while making some of the best music. They could’ve been your average pop band, but they took it a different route. So for that they are the most important musical group in a sense
That argument alone doesn't justify considering them the greatest band of all time, you could easily say the same thing about Radiohead
Jordan While I love Radiohead, and would argue they are super influential, there probably wouldn’t be Radiohead without the Beatles. Plus Radiohead was popular with creep, but not on some Beatles level shit when they shifted directions, so no it’s not the same situation but I understand what you were trying to say
If it is one thing the beatles is known for, it is for making simple Music, to ring in mom and pop, and the kids, to make the communists all the Money they opposed. They were effortless, was like Milli Vanilli really. Only difference is, they ruled, since they used real musicians to play their Music.
mowgli Hassan Yeah the music pretty much after 65 and honestly even before that was DEFINITELY harder to make than goddamn milli vanilli. That’s what people always forget, they weren’t just those mop heads, they were legit songwriters with some of the most complex and well written songs off abbey road and the white album especially. Not some easy pop shit
Mr wolf, I ain't dogging the songwriting skills of the whiteys, great lyrics. Just saying Milli Vanilla was just as effortless, but their recordlabel hired real musicians to show their chops. Apple found 4 dorks, gave them some hooch, and made them act a fool. It was more about image than Music With beatles. It was their days backstreet boys. And if we include persons, we should agree that the King, the boss, or michael Jackson is the best through all time, if we pick from the 100-list.

Some may say the Beatles are overrated, but it's insane how they made classic albums every year without long needed break that many artists usually take.
The Beatles themselves aren’t overrated but the way people put them on a massive pedestal causes them to be seen as overrated
@@panama1942 And those people typically dont know The Beatles outside of Hey Jude and Revolution.
Had a friend who would argue that the Beatles sucked. We headed to the bar, Rocky Raccoon came on my music library and he says, “Oh the Raccoon song! The Beatles have such a big and diverse catalog of music, most young people don't know anything past their cheesy early songs. The Beatles were incredible and a lot of their music is timeless.
Their early songs aren’t even cheesy. It’s fucking amazing music, right from the start.
Magical Mistery Tour it's just the most underated thing ever. People talk about how the Beatles are just pop and about Hey, Jude and I Want To Hold Your Hand (that are good songs but not at all the magic of the band) and put aside songs like The Fool on The Hill, I'm The Walrus, Blue Jay Way, Your Mother Should know, Straberry Fields Forrecer and Penny Lane. That to not said the first pychodelic comedy on cinema, this movie literally inspired the Monty Pyton crew, the best comedy group and best thing to ever come from British invasion on the movie cenario.
And that's not the only underated experimental song or even nice song Tomerrow Never Knows, A Day in The Life (best music evet), Fixing a Hole, Glass Onion, Eleanor Rigby, I'm so tired, Rocket Raccon, Revolution 9 , Piggies... man there's so much... But the mainstream portray The Beatles as they were just Yesterday, She Loves You, All You Need is Love and all the most comercial songs. Most people who think the Beatles are overated barely know their songs and the experimental and really cool work. How the are against the mainstream and the mainstream at the same time. (Some even think Imagine is a Beatles song).
Their cheesy song was normal at the time. There was no metal back then.

Totally agree... Pet Sounds is on even footing with a good swathe of Beatles records and the finished Smile Sessions is easily on par with almost anything they did creatively
I agree. The Beach Boys are legends but I feel like the Beatles are a little bit better.
2ndsebringsucks the issue is that its their only album comparable to the beatles. the beatles are 5-1 against beachboys. brian wilson is still a genius and one of the greatest

The Beatles, removed from their influence, still made great music
Kvlt since birth They made incredible music. Mind blowingly powerful melody and song.
By that logic, red hot chili peppers would be one of the best bands of all time lol
Nemo Dollaz How so? The argument is that if removed from their influence and viewing their music as objectively as possible the Beatles still made good music. Which they did. They may not have been as experimental, but their music has stood the test of time and even furthered others as inspiration entire generations down the line.
One Dixie Cup Just For You They were incredibly experimental for a band that was so pop they transcended pop.
The beatles are the reason so many great bands and artists have existed
Even people who don't listen to rock know how big the Beatles are and how important they were for music
Riley Coxon people who listen to a wide variety of rock know that they were not as innovative or as influential as people think.
Death Metal I listen to a wide variety of rock and they still are. Yeah other parts of rock take influences from different genres as well but a huge amount of bands from all over take influence from the Beatles
I'm sure 90% of rock musicians were influenced by the Beatles at one point.
How can Coldplay be the most overrated band of all time when U2 exists?
U2 had their best albums at the start of their career, everything after Achtung Baby is just mediocre to average.
MegaCrasherMusic Dad? is that you?
+MegaCrasherMusic beat me to it..yeah.. Joshua Tree and Achtung Baby have solidified their place in music history. Coldplay hasnt had any album that can be regarded as that. though their first few outputs had potential
Are Coldplay really in the position to be 'overrated' these days? I thought a band being labelled as 'overrated' means that they had to be 'rated' in the first place -- aka highly critically praised by many people. Coldplay haven't really been critically praised since 2008 and Viva la Vida, or before that in 2002 with A Rush Of Blood To The Head, their last few albums, whilst popular, haven't been very well recieved by critics. Hence why The Beatles can be labelled as 'overrated', due to the huge amount of acclaim and praise heaped upon them still.
Ross Parker they have a huge fan base who will fight you endlessly if you said anything less than "they are the most talented band right now." That has to count somewhat right???
They literally made fundamentals of rock and paved the way for other artist and just listen to every album, they always reinvented themselves again and again, there's a reason they stayed on top for nearly a decade and it would've been longer if they didn't split.
so did the kinks
The fundamentals of rock were created by bands like little richards, muddy waters, elvis and chuck berry. The beatles didn't create shit

While I'm fine if you don't like The Beatles music, since music is subjective...but I'll never agree in the slightest that they are overrated in any way because of how much they've done for the music industry, whether you like it or not.
The only area in which I'd say they are overrated is when people praise them for being super experimental and abstract. Otherwise, their historical significance cannot be befuddled.

I personally don't really care for the Beatles. They just never really struck a chord with me. But I will never say the Beatles are bad. They are probably one of the most influential bands, and they basically set the bar for every band after them.
Same, I can accept that they have a big legacy and all but I dont think they’re really anything special musically. The people who came after them picked up their themes and did it much better. To draw a comparison, I can appreciate Seinfeld and what they did to comedy as a genre. But if I actually want to have some good laughs I’ll watch some modern, more developed and, well, more perfected stuff. Thats my take on it roast away guys

Nine Inch Nails' film scores are some of the best in recent years though so I think they make up for their band music being less good.
Auden ghosts V-X when?
Literally came here to say that. I think Trent and Atticus have made some of the best electronic/ambient music of the past few years, so for someone to call their work boring, it fucking hurts! But yes, I also get that if that kind of stuff isn't their kind of music, I could see someone thinking its boring in comparison to the days of Downward Spiral.
as much as i adore the soundtracks (and recent projects with the exception of HM) i think its plenty fair to call his most recent work boring just because the beautiful, layered, ambient style trent primarily uses now is inherently not very exhilarating.
Totally agree. The Social Network OST is one of my favorite soundtracks of all time, and I would even say it's one of Trent's best projects in decades.
Some specific albums by The Beatles are overrated; but the band on the whole definitely isn't. Their influence in song writing is so massive that the effects of their music is still felt today.
But isn't influence overrated? Let's argue.
The Beatles have made great albums and are highly influential, but a lot of people just think they invented everything from metal to prog and punk among others, which is just not true, they where extemely influenced by bands like The Who and The Beach Boys. They are regarded as one of the most intelligent and complex bands lyrically and song writing wise, and its pretty obvious they are not really that. But there's a tendency among the people who considers them overrated to hate on the band, say they where utter thrash and diminish their huge influence, which I also disagree with.

Hm, I’m surprised with the amount of people who agreed with the Beatles-thing. Personally, I think they have some of the best written songs of all time. And there are so many of them. Like +100 songs that would be ”that one song” for so many of the other bands of the era.
Kosma Räisänen younger people only say the Beatles are overrated because they’ve been exposed to their influence their whole lives and don’t think it’s special. Meanwhile Bruno Mars and Pharrell have been ripping off Michael Jackson for their whole careers and you can bet younger generations will consider Jackson an overrated weirdo
I actually think The Beatles are very underrated.
Same. I believe they actually deserve more credit for their influence on music.
They (Beatles critics) probably have no reference beside the early work, She loves you etc. The interesting Beatles period imo would be the mid to late era starting with Revolver, reaching a creative peak with Sgt Pepper and a "quality peak" with White album. Consider the evolution from Hard days night to Tomorrow never knows, only two years apart..
Beatles dont get enough credit nowadays. We have more people sucking off retaerded bullshit like arcade fire when beatles wrote way better songs.

I think the problem with NIN now is that Trent is not really focusing his energy and lyricism into catchy formulas. I felt with a lot of earlier NIN albums while they were so experimental, they all had flavour and there was something about each song that stuck in your ear and made you feel a certain way. I feel as if now he's just done so many types of sounds that he might be having some writer's block when it comes to making something with a bit of mainstream appeal. I'm all for experimental music and going against the grain but when it comes to making songs that will retain peoples attention they need to have a little something to them that will stick out in your head and have you coming back for more.
KosherKru that's probably true. Also, there's just something about his voice tone and lyrics post-The-Fragile that makes me roll my eyes. It's overly melodramatic and desperate coming out of an older gentleman. The songs sound like NIN parodies to me.
How is post The Fragile stuff more melodramatic than the 90s stuff? If anything, NIN's 90s lyrics were very emotional and could be seen as melodramatic than current stuff (especially Pretty Hate Machine and The Fragile).
IMO Year Zero is when I started to find myself going back to his old music for what I wanted. I still respect his hustle and I really admire what he is trying to do with his craft still to this day but I just can't get down with some of the newer albums.
Big man with a gun the lyrics themselves are similar in a vacuum, but hearing them coming out of the same person at 22 and then still at 40 just comes off as childish and creatively bankrupt.
I've honestly never found Trent to be a consistently good lyricist. Occasionally he hits you with a great line and he did manage to write 'hurt' with some of the most amazing lyrics I've ever heard but for the most part I've always found it to be the lowest point of NIN. I also get the impression from Trent that it is probably the factor that he is least interested in when writing music. Trent's sense of sound is why he is truly talented. Even within a pop formula he manages to make songs that are so moody, mysterious, atmospheric and intoxicating. I want the music to be more vague and convoluted. When I hear the very literal and self-centred lyrics over the top it kind of kills it for me. I was a diehard NIN fan when I was younger but now I rarely listen to a significant portion of their discography because I just find it cringy but it's not like how Linkin Park is cringy, I still feel like there is so much potential to a lot of the songs but they just don't pull through. I see this throughout his entire discography but particularly from The Fragile onwards. I genuinely think some of his best ideas come from that period up until now and I would make the case that he is actually more advanced as well as creative but I guess that crushes the soul that he had in The Downward Spiral a bit. I actually really love his soundtrack work as well as Ghosts and I think it's some of his best material. The new NIN at it's worst is when he tries to be the old NIN, which is over and is never going to happen again. Marilyn Manson is just an old an washed up public figure. I have nothing against the guy, I respect what he did but his time is up. This is just how it's been for me. What do you guys think?

I used to think the beatles were overrated and overhyped too, but that was purely based off of their songs that get the most exposure - stuff like Hey Jude and Twist and Shout. However, after I listened to their later works in their entirety - stuff like the white album and lonely hearts - I see where all the critical praise comes from and I can safely call myself a beatles fan. The white album in particular is extremely impressive in its musical scope that I think I caught some secondhand creativity.

"The Beatles are overrated" says every person who hasn't listened past their first few records. The Beatles started just as any pop-y "boy band", but man how they evolved overtime! George Martin opened the doors of musicianship to them and I personally believed this helped create some of the most subtly complex and impact-ful music ever. Some people just don't understand music man. I get it if you aren't a fan but if you look into the musicianship developed by the group, especially in the later years, a whole new appreciation will pop up. But again, for those who aren't as musically trained, the recognition of their complexity may not be so easy to come to. But even then, there's something about their music that just stands out among everyone else's.
Damn, I knew George Michael was a talented artist, but I didn’t know he was so talented to work with the Beatles as a kid!

Anthony, part of the reason people aren't fans of Pure Comedy is because of the sound of it. The music itself isn't nearly as interesting as the lyrics, it's part of why even though I think it's a good album I barely ever listen to it. Leaving LA is a prime example of that; great lyrics, but Josh's melody and the music behind it barely changes throughout the 13 minutes it lasts. I like the thing overall now, but up until basically the end of the year I didn't want to bother sitting through over 70 minutes of music that sounded like that.
Its not necessarily generational; I am 51 and I have always believed the Beatles to be wildly overhyped. They were the Menudo of their day, featuring very aggressive management and a knack for writing some decent pop songs. In fact, they were a perfectly fine pop group; they started off trying to play rock and roll and were stunningly mediocre. It was the Kinks who saved rock and roll from the likes of pop groups like the Beatles and the Beach Boys. Dave Davies pretty much invented the power chord, and while many of the early Kinks songs certainly had pop elements they also had a lot more rock and roll in them. I also call bs about the Beatles inventing psychedelic rock - they may have been influenced by drugs at the time, but they sound nothing like 1966 Roky Erickson's 13th Floor Elevators or Pink Floyd at the Marquee Club. They certainly experimented with sound and incorporated some elements into their music, but were always a pop group at heart, and a mediocre one at that, IMO.

It's almost impossible to overrate the Beatles. It's a dumb idea.
Almost 50 years after The Beatles broke up, and they are still relevant. The Beatles wrote the Rolling Stones first hit (I wanna be your man) and they didn’t really care for the song . Keith Richards even said that without The Beatles, there wouldn’t be The Rolling Stones. Music genius, Brian Wilson, was blown away from Rubber Soul and Sgt Peppers. The competition during their time included The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Beach Boys, The Doors, CCR, Jimi Hendrix, Led Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and that’s just the artists that are remembered from the era, and The Beatles are considered the best from the era. The amount of artists they’ve influenced over the years isn’t comparable. They revolutionized music in a way no one else has or will ever do again. They were the first super group. Anyone who says they are overrated don’t know real talent, can’t appreciate their accomplishments, or don’t like them
