How can my heart be both breaking and bursting. It is so refreshing to hear such a truthful and passionate advocate for education. I have long accepted I am seen as a ‘mean’ teacher by parents and even colleagues. I know I’m not mean, because I adore children and believe wholeheartedly that education is not a privilege, it is a right. I will never stop pushing to give my students the best opportunities to learn. Values, discipline and explicit teaching. Thank you Katherine. You are an inspiration.
What to look for in"progressive"schools: The absence of rules in classrooms, collaborative student work for most of the assignments, desks in groups, students that treat teachers as peers, teachers that treat students as equals, myriad excuses for unsavory behavior and lackluster performance... I've been teaching for 17 years and I always tell people I'm the Dragon Lady as well. I just learned about Ms. Birbalsingh yesterday and it's striking how much she's said that I have been saying for years!
So true! The pushback was shocking as I began to see exactly what was so very wrong with our public schools and began to point it out even with solutions. So we left!
Such Passion, brilliant. A questioner mention Hate Crime increase in Britain: Hate crime is not up in Britain, the interpretation of what a crime is has changed. Being offended is now considered a ‘hate crime’ and it’s based on the interpretation of the individual involved. what is framed a ‘hate crime’ has been distorted so much it makes it appears that hate crime is on a rapid increase. The fact is it isn’t, actual real hate crime has actually been steadily decreasing for the past 25 years.

Better schools is relatively straight forward. Get better teachers. Eleminate race and gender stuff. Demand high behavior from students. Involve parents. Establish goals. Base everything on a meritocracy.

Start with basic Math and English. Leave the global agenda where it belongs.... 🇪🇺
How about a free market in education?
#FFS it's not hard folks.
At a Federal level we actually fund private schools a lot more then public ones
Only middle class parents can do that
