Hey Dan - tinned food in ration packs. Those of us that are old enough and ugly enough will have had a lot of experience with the 'cold war' British army ration packs. I'm a veteran of 13 years service, and when I started, the ration packs had tins in them. This is how you use them. Using a hexamine stove, and a mess tin, you part fill a mess tin with water, and stand the partially opened can in the water. This is in effect a 'bain marie'. The boiling water heats the contents of the tin. Once the contents are hot enough, you pick up the tin and EAT FROM THE TIN. No washing up needed. The same goes for all other tins, pouches (unopened). You heat them with this method. THEN, the hot water goes into your mug to make a brew. This way the only thing that needs washing is 1 x mug and a few wet wipes should sort that out, again, no water wasted. The mess tin has only had water in it, though the bottom will need some cleaning from the soot from the hexamine blocks. I don't think I have ever seen any outdoor channel get this right. If you're carrying what you are living off, then you want as much of the water you carry to be consumed. Not wasted washing out pans unnecessarily. In terms of the survival shelter, bear this in mind. I spent all of my time in the army without any enclosure. A roll mat, sleeping bag, and a goretex bivvi bag and a poncho shelter overhead to keep the rain and snow off, most of the time, operating down to sub zero conditions, and weeks at a time. Any item like that shelter, that keeps the wind off, is an added bonus and would be considered luxury by most soldiers.
only thing i never liked the thought of was drinking the water you just boiled your rat pack stuff in - boiled foil food pouch or tin & plastic water.......cant be healthy🤔🙂
1 cheese possessed,+ jam+ tinned marg on an oatmeal biscuit was food from the gods and 2 that's a massively overcomplicated way of cooking babies heads or chicken in brown. Just stick them on your exhaust as you are driving between harbour areas and they are ready for you when you get there 😉
Reinforces an argument I have had with a number of people on YT. When I was in the forces I was taught a number of things through actual practice, especially in the Arctic. Space blankets etc are useful for an hour or so. but after that they are only good for keeping the wind and rain off for another hour or so. We used to hve a smock that had 4 big pockets and more importantly a poachers pocket. We always had food, first aid and I used to keep my bivvy bag in the poachers pocket. All jackets nowadays have eff all room for anything and think if it hits the fan your backpack will bail you out. Dont bank on it.

Would you consider doing a supermarket version on what to buy to cook out and about thats all dehydrated or tinned ? Save a bit of miney compared to a ration pack
@endurance personal used a few just hoping to see some different options One key thing i love is cous cous (spicy) takes up no space in pack but filling and fast tin of spam and you got a meal in 5 mins although not very nutritional haha

Hello Dan, from NZ, I have used the survival bag twice in a real situation. This may sound counter to what you want to achieve, but I put a slit in the back wall and open it up like the front wall, I then take some vines or long strips of thin branches and tie them together in the form of a mesh, making at least 30 x 30cm squares. I then take long fern fronds or thin branches with leaves left on and weave them through the mess this is then placed at the back wall, this will stop the buildup of condensation and at the same time stop a through wind. This has worked for me, and I have stayed dry. This has to be done about an hour before dark as it does take a little time to do but well worth the effort. On the subject of heating the tin in the fire, you were wise not too, I believe it is carcinogenic, also if it melts with the heat, you will consume it. When the cans are empty, I throw them on the fire this does two things, one, it burns off any food left in the tin and stops rats etc, from coming around your tent site, two, it quickens the rusting of the tin. Great video and good lessons for those who are not that way inclined. Always carry a lighter, lighter, lighter. If people can remember to carry their Ferro rod, they can remember a lighter. BIC lighters are so cheap and very reliable, even when wet I have one in almost every pocket, every EDC and every stove set up I have. Of course its better to have more than one option, but a BIC will guarantee you between 3000 and 5000 flames and may be the difference between a hot meal or not.

Surely you realize that the way to get tinder to fire by ferrocerium rod or match is to get the an edge of the tinder to have multiple exceptionally thin shreds of dry material. Thin material has a lower start to fire temperature than thick material - reduced surface area/thickness.

Don't know if you will see this Dan but always keep some cotton wool buds in your fire kit, they will light easily with you striker and you can light the solid fuel from the cotton.

I think you'll find that the ration pack tins should be emptied into mess tins to be cooked Dan. Every soldier would be issued with their own set of mess tins/cutlery/water bottle and mug. I used to do a lot of winter carp fishing and when we did jacket potatoes in the fire we would always put a tin of beans on the fire get a stick with a V on it half open the can and put the ripple through that’s the best way I found, all the best

Hi Dan, I've noticed on a lot of the foreign army Ration packs they are mainly made up of tin goods, which can be purchased off the shelves in most supermarkets, when you look at the British Ration packs they have been specifically made for a soldier, so as to keep up their energy levels. When I see you unpack those foreign meals, I would not have appreciated them during my time in the military. Whatever we received in the British army was good food. Today, I still buy the British Army Ration packs, and my wife and I have these for meals when we're out for the day or weekends. As for your videos, we'll what can I say? But I love everyone you make, and I fully appreciate the work you put into producing them. You seem to always make mistakes, yet you don't edit them out this is what makes them so enjoyable. Great job with the food bank, I’ve helped at our local one in Australia and it’s a truly humbling experience…and not always the people you’d expect, we saw a few Mum’s with kids straight from school so they would have a dinner/tea that night…. There were some others who wanted company so came down for a cuppa and a chat….it’s always good to give back as you never know, one day you may need some help.
it is nice that you help out in a foodbank, there are not many UA-camrs who are volunteers. Everyone seems to be out for themselves. This country can't run without volunteers I am a volunteer for several things. I do donate to the foodbank most weeks and it is usually things that can be eaten hot or cold.
Hi Dan, one golden rule is having the ability to easily light a fire 🔥 or to light up a stove, especially in a bad situation. The humanitarian packs contain a flat pack stove with the smaller (green) BCB Firedragon blocks, using just one of those blocks would have ensured a rapid light up from your flint and steel. The green BCB Firedragon blocks are on eBay.
Dan, great video as always. NEVER put a tinned food directly in a fire, even if opened.. The tins are lined with either lacquer, like inside a coke can or any that look clear, beans etc. or a plastic film.. this WILL burn and melt and give off toxic gases and ingredients into your food. Use a mess tin and dent the tin, pop it in.. once it pops out it's warm (not hot) Once it deforms it's hot.! Or open once warm (carefully!) and it'll be a hand warmer too.! But always in a mess tin with water, then use the water for your brew.. Saves wasted water. Anyone who's served in the forces back in the old days would tell you the same.. Old skool.!

I like all the fat that was on the beef. In a survival situation it's the fat that will be your best friend. Putting it in the soup is a fine idea. I would have done that too. Also, I would have crumbled up the crackers and put them in the soup as well. Soup and crackers, oh yeah man.
Wow! I had to rewind the video and check the price of that shelter. £60! What a rip off! For that money you could have a DD tarp or similar and survive in the woods like a king. Dutch rations for the win. I'm in the woods for the weekend with a couple of Dutch rations . Great variety, loads of hot drinks including beef bouillon. Can't be beat IMO.

You are doing a great job and your family should be proud of you for trying to help people, this world we live in is just too selfish every one is just as important as the next. I agree and I do the same, I don’t give them money in case it’s wasted on drugs, alcohol or smoking. I know that addiction is hard to resist and so help them get warm food and a drink instead because they might not have the willpower to choose food over the addiction, not judging just know from family member experience that the addiction always came first.
well done Dan. Very brave to try that out for fun!! You did the right thing with the beef by the way. You can also crunble those 'biscuits' i to the soup and other thigs to thicke them up. They are ok if you dip them in Jam. My mate says they are best with mustard. Some packs come with mustard so spread it o he says?
Have noticed at this time of the year in West Yorkshire fires can be a problem , think it’s to do with the barometric air pressure and the damp in the air , enjoyed it though the Italian ration pack didn’t do it for me , but I am from keighley !very best wishes to you and to you and your subs .
last night i tried out my new mil tec jungle hammock. i packed my self in a summer sleeping bag and a 3 season sleeping bag. on top of the hammock i put a mylar blanket on, oh boy, was i warm. nice and snug... mylar has to be used with care and i think these survival tents are dangerous, giving ppl false feeling of security. more of this kind of videos testing this crap in real life is life saving, thank you for a great video
I'm going to say fifth grade and sixth grade me and the kids in the neighborhood would go camping at the local Creek we would usually catch crawdads and eat them, crayfish that's what you want to call them, one of the kids behind me got a gift for us from his father we received one MRE each from his stash of sea rations. None of us were a fan of the canned crackers. Then as we got older and discovered the MREs in bags and the bread that comes with them to this day are the equivalent that would be the last thing to eat and only if we were extremely hungry.
I have just started stealth camping but did a lot in the army. There is a great local woodland here in Cornwall I would love you to come and camp in and some good local beeches right close to my home. I am originally a good old fashion Northerner like your goodself.

In my family they always made non-alcoholic fruit punch for birthdays ( one of those weird Dutch family traditions, like the circle birthday horror, I guess lol) and the lone cherry was coveted haha! I always made sure to get some before the bowl started to be passen around, hehe "HELP" lol
Okay, as to the topic of the woman at the food bank, you're right about that, you can't help everyone. I suppose we have to hear from The Holy Spirit on that one. I have experienced emergency sleeping bags & the condensation was bad. You were trying to get your fire going with the matches, they failed but they would still work as an excellerent for your tabs, flint & steel. The crackers. You could call them Hard Tack if you want to. And it's been a standard in soldering for quite some time. I think the Tuna with crackers could be a good match or boiling the crackers in the can of beef with some salt & pepper & a little water too could make a good meal. You could expand your meals in this fashion. I enjoyed the video & we are still learning stuff so it's all good. 🖖

Unfortunately you never truly know where people's money has gone Supplying food does just that, keep people fed. I agree with the lady in the food bank, as soon as they start donating any amount of cash, the genuine people who are struggling will get out numbered by people who'll take advantage of getting cash. Keep up the support for them, giving your time up is very honourable.
Would definitely like to see some survival food ideas, any cooking recipes you could share would be awesome. I like the idea of finding international survival foods too! Sorry but the one in this episode seemed kinda crappy, lol your explanation of the crackers at (31:00) is funny. Having something to eat that is easy to grab if you're short on time is always good though.

You have to scrape the top of the hex blocks with a knife to get some flakes if you want to light it with a ferro rod.
MAKE YOUR OWN STOVE.

I think it is best to just have a 2man tent and a good sleeping bag for emergency prep . Thanks for testing out these products for us .

Top tip Dan don't smoke in bed and always carry a firextingush with you 10kg co2 or keep your piss pot close to the fire!

Use a mess tin and dent the tin, pop it in.. once it pops out it's warm (not hot) Once it deforms it's hot.! Or open once warm (carefully!) and it'll be a hand warmer too.! But always in a mess tin with water, then use the water for your brew.. Saves wasted water. Anyone who's served in the forces back in the old days would tell you the same.. Old skool.!

I like all the fat that was on the beef. In a survival situation it's the fat that will be your best friend. Putting it in the soup is a fine idea. I would have done that too. Also, I would have crumbled up the crackers and put them in the soup as well. Soup and crackers, oh yeah man.
Wow! I had to rewind the video and check the price of that shelter. £60! What a rip off! For that money you could have a DD tarp or similar and survive in the woods like a king. Yeah you could have just slipped that woman the thirty quid but you could see how handing out money at the food bank would get out of control and abused really quickly.
When you give people money you don't know what they will do with the money. Beer, fags or drugs.

Dutch rations for the win. I'm in the woods for the weekend with a couple of Dutch rations . Great variety, loads of hot drinks including beef bouillon. Can't be beat IMO.

I agree and I do the same, I don’t give them money in case it’s wasted on drugs, alcohol or smoking. I know that addiction is hard to resist and so help them get warm food and a drink instead because they might not have the willpower to choose food over the addiction, not judging just know from family member experience that the addiction always came first.

well done Dan. Very brave to try that out for fun!! You did the right thing with the beef by the way. You can also crunble those 'biscuits' i to the soup and other thigs to thicke them up. They are ok if you dip them in Jam. My mate says they are best with mustard. Some packs come with mustard so spread it o he says?
Have noticed at this time of the year in West Yorkshire fires can be a problem , think it’s to do with the barometric air pressure and the damp in the air , enjoyed it though the Italian ration pack didn’t do it for me , but I am from keighley !very best wishes to you and to you and your subs .

last night i tried out my new mil tec jungle hammock. i packed my self in a summer sleeping bag and a 3 season sleeping bag. on top of the hammock i put a mylar blanket on, oh boy, was i warm. nice and snug... mylar has to be used with care and i think these survival tents are dangerous, giving ppl false feeling of security. more of this kind of videos testing this crap in real life is life saving, thank you for a great video

I'm going to say fifth grade and sixth grade me and the kids in the neighborhood would go camping at the local Creek we would usually catch crawdads and eat them, crayfish that's what you want to call them, one of the kids behind me got a gift for us from his father we received one MRE each from his stash of sea rations. None of us were a fan of the canned crackers. Then as we got older and discovered the MREs in bags and the bread that comes with them to this day are the equivalent that would be the last thing to eat and only if we were extremely hungry.

I have just started stealth camping but did a lot in the army. There is a great local woodland here in Cornwall I would love you to come and camp in and some good local beeches right close to my home. I am originally a good old fashion Northerner like your goodself.
That's right, lmao!!! In my family they always made non-alcoholic fruit punch for birthdays ( one of those weird Dutch family traditions, like the circle birthday horror, I guess lol) and the lone cherry was coveted haha! I always made sure to get some before the bowl started to be passen around, hehe

Okay, as to the topic of the woman at the food bank, you're right about that, you can't help everyone. I suppose we have to hear from The Holy Spirit on that one. I have experienced emergency sleeping bags & the condensation was bad. You were trying to get your fire going with the matches, they failed but they would still work as an excellerent for your tabs, flint & steel. The crackers. You could call them Hard Tack if you want to. And it's been a standard in soldering for quite some time. I think the Tuna with crackers could be a good match or boiling the crackers in the can of beef with some salt & pepper & a little water too could make a good meal. You could expand your meals in this fashion. I enjoyed the video & we are still learning stuff so it's all good. 🖖

I agree with the lady in the food bank, as soon as they start donating any amount of cash, the genuine people who are struggling will get out numbered by people who'll take advantage of getting cash.

Sorry but the one in this episode seemed kinda crappy, lol your explanation of the crackers at (31:00) is funny. Having something to eat that is easy to grab if you're short on time is always good though.
