    I've had mine for a week, and the explanations are very straightforward. My experience as a former choir singer definitely helps too!

    I couldn't ask for a more splendid experience learning for the first Time how to make noise from a flute by such a beautiful specimen of woman on this Earth. It took me 18 months to finish my 6-month DUI School only because for the last 6 months I had a beautiful teacher something about you women that knows how to make me come back and discipline myself . So from the other end of my flute right up to the tip of my tongue, I thank you. And I'm looking forward to the next lesson...

    Thanks this helped me a lot. I watched several UA-cam videos, but your method seem to make the most sense to me .I was able to get a clear tone fairly consistently. Now practice and repetition, I am an adult trying a new instrument for the first time.

      How are you doing now? I just got a brand new silver flute. Not played in 40 years and it's easier than my last nickel student flute.

    I watched a masterclass where James Galway strongly prefers not covering ANY of the tone hole with the bottom lip. Do you recommend the 1/3 as a beginner technique or is there a disagreement in philosophy/approach?

    • @TheFlutePractice
      @TheFlutePractice  6 років тому +1

      I think I would probably say it is a bigger disagreement on technique yes...but I always say to everyone...try it out and see what you like and what works for you!

      Hmm I think he said the opposite; that we need quite a bit covered.

    Thanks for posting this, probably the best intro-lesson I've seen for flute! My problem seems to be that my bottom lip never wants to roll down, maybe because I'm primarily a trumpet/flugelhorn/sax-player where those embouchures are always keeping the lips a lot tighter/firmer. But I'll keep working on it!

    • @TheFlutePractice
      @TheFlutePractice  8 років тому

      Thank you! What a compliment :D I know about this struggle from some friends, students and colleagues who play doubles. There is also a video I recently did on relaxing the embouchure..this may be helpful too! I think the really encouraging this is that when you are able to switch between embouchures easily you can be sure that you have really developed a lot of flexibility in those muscles and that will benefit all the instruments!

    This is a really good lesson, but are there any other ways to help your lips stay in the blowing position?

    • @TheFlutePractice
      @TheFlutePractice  6 років тому +1

      I am sure there are many! I love using this method because I just find it the least fuss but maybe go check out some other videos on this. If I stumble on any other nice ones I will let you know

    I've only been learning flute for about a week, but I can't get my aperture to be narrower than the embouchure hole, so I get a very airy tone from my breath hitting too much of the lip plate. Is this common for beginners? Is it possible to develop one's lip muscles enough to get a narrower aperture? Thanks for the great videos.

    • @TheFlutePractice
      @TheFlutePractice  7 років тому +4

      Yes! These muscles definitely do develop over time. But experiment with pulling the muscles on the corner of your mouth a bit more on the mmmmm and try not to release too much of the tension on the 'puh'. Does this help?

    • @garyhellen1733
      @garyhellen1733 7 років тому +2

      I have a slight teardrop, and I have difficulty holding the middle of my upper lip up while blowing, so my aperture ends up being a wide slit. But I'm practicing my frown, doing lip calisthenics, and making lots of goofy/scary shapes with my mouth to get my lips used to doing new things. I gotta show my lips who's the boss.
      By the way, your videos are the best and most thorough that I've seen on youtube, and I think I've seen them all! So keep 'em coming, and thank you for sharing your talent and knowledge.

      @TheFlutePractice  7 років тому +1

      Thank you! I am so glad to hear it and will keep sharing :) Good luck with you embouchure and keep me updated how it is going...love the attitude too :D

      I've managed to get my aperture much smaller (definitely smaller than
      the embouchure hole), but no matter what I do I get a very fuzzy,
      hissing tone. There's like a whooshing sound coming from inside the
      headjoint. It's driving me mad! I think it has something to do with my
      air stream, that it's very unfocused and turbulent, but I have no idea
      how to fix it.

      Would you perhaps be interested in making a short video of your playing and either posting or privately emailing? I always try to encourage people to post so that others can learn from it but I really know how scary this can be so I am happy to give private option! All I can say for no w is patience. Learning to coordinate and refine all those muscles takes time and practice! Make sure you are not getting the hole smaller by playing with too much tension.

    One issue I'm having is that when my upper lip gets dry I get a fluttering sound, something like what you hear at the 4:58 mark of your video. Is that common and how do you keep you lips moist so it does happen?

    • @TheFlutePractice
      @TheFlutePractice  7 років тому

      Hey :) this is a problem and one that most players often don't think about until we get nervous in s a concert and the inside of our mouth dries up too. Generally, if you watch flute players you will notice that they often lick their lips (very discreetly and unconsciously) before they start. Of course when you are beginning the flute, you kinda wanna "hold the position" and so often don't allow for this natural progress. Not sure if this is what you are talking about and this helps?

    • @pmh1nic
      @pmh1nic 7 років тому

      I think you've hit on what I'm asking about. As a beginner once I get that sweet spot where the tone is good I don't want to lose it by licking my lip but after a minute or so the lip dries up, starts to flutter and I have no other option but to lick the lip to moisten it and hope I hit the sweet spot when I reengage. Sometimes I get it but sometimes I don't.

    • @TheFlutePractice
      @TheFlutePractice  7 років тому +2

      Cool. Well hope it helps :) I think don't worry to much about losing the position. I actually make my students find the position, take away the flute and then try find it again. The more often you find the position again...the more you are learning and can find it again in future. Don't think of learning the position as much as learning to find the position ...if that makes sense?
