    Why does no one see that a laundry spell would instantly remove all DEMON BLOOD and MANA from fern’s clothes? It’s ridiculously powerful for a mage that conceals her presence and would have prevented the worst injuries she suffered in the show? Why does no one see this?

    I like how everyone is coming out of their hole to talk about the magic system in this Anime and I'm about to use all the absolutely great input I've found on UA-cam and ramble into my Podcast Episode about Magic for a good hour about this, completely tilting my colleagues and not feeling any shame for it, because this deserves all the attention it can get!

    I think the series itself actually said that mage battles are like a more complicated version of Rock-Paper Scissors. Frieren also commented that having more mana doesn't automatically mean victory, because skill, experience, and other factors are involved in these kinds of battles. And even goes about how those who don't use magic, like Stark, Eisen, and Himmel, are still extremely dangerous in that they can overcome things that Frieren herself cannot.
    Overall, this having a soft magic system that is explained, and thus have countless possibilities that allow for so much free thinking is why this is arguably the best magic system I've seen.

    I would have love to see Frieren let all of her mana out during the clone fight and see the other mages react to just how much there was.

    Clean clothes for a traveller is a big thing. It's not like a village/city dweller that would be around water & have the paraphernalia to get things clean. Ubel has a clarity of purpose & conviction for her magic to work; she could be on the autism spectrum and seems to have a few psychopathic tendencies. The mages that passed the final exam are classical types, while she's the wildcard that Serie probably appreciates that will stir the pot occasionally to keep things interesting.

    I think the idea of magic they presented at Frieren also subtlety represent a "footprint" that mages left in the world. Every spell has a lore behind it, even the "stupid" ones.
    Part of the series motif is for Frieren to learn the history of other people and carry it with her. To not let their stories to be forgotten or disbelieved (which was Himmel's greatest fear). Spells had creators and each of them had a story and a motivation to have researched it. She started collecting spells before she cared about people's legacies, but this might be a "craving" that surfaces as an inner desire to immortalize mortal people.

      @@Kotiha_Studio What a fascinating take of the Magic System! I've watched/listened to you analysis 4+ times time while I did some chores and really enjoyed it! Well done!
      If I may go a bit off on a tangent. I think another interesting topic is how the manga author "wants" (?) us to rethink our "hero system". Who is a hero? Can a drunken priest be a hero? Can a self-loving swordsman that cannot pull the hero's sword be a hero? Can a mage that ALWAYS be trapped by mimic be a hero? To take the hero's sword as an example, my impression of the manga author's view is that she/he want us to think that people with flaws (like you or me) can be heroes.
      And in fact, it is the "hero party", a group of people as a collective that defeats the Demon King and not a powerful swordsman alone, or a powerful mage alone, et al that did good together! Remind me of a quote I love, “Never doubt that a small group of thoughtful, committed people can change the world. Indeed, it is the only thing that ever has.” - Margaret Mead
      P.S. 11:54 As to your interesting question about the flower spell, I have a simplistic take (and maybe even "correct take") for it. I think Frieren will be able to produce said flower as exactly depicted in the "a little bit off" drawing and no monster will be created! For Frieren, to me, with her spell can always produces flowers of any looks or those in her imaginations. BUT it took her months to find Himmel's blue flower because she is not merely looking to make something close or look alike but Himmel's blue flowers, the ones that Himmel wanted to show her.

    iirc, only Himmel could've triumphed over the Demon King. You require a certain quality to actually "kill" the demon. And that quality is to have the vision of seeing hope - seeing the future gaining peace. Someone please correct me on this because I only heard this from a friend who read the manga, but if this is true, that would be no one else is qualified to kill the demon king except Himmel and his party.
    Serie can imagine defeating the demon king but she still doesnt believe in true peace. She even tells frieren how in the future, humans could be the one to kill her - suggesting she knew them passing magic unto humans would bring forth a new era of conflict even without the demon king himself. In fact, i doubt any of the characters introduced can imagine that. Only the overly optimistic gigachad Himmel would.

    About the quickround. This is all from watching the show and analyzing it and the manga (no spoilers here), and I love all of this can be theoryzed from how we see the magic work.
    Frieren has a book with the flower and is not enough, she needs the physical object to analyze, i guess is similar to how Kanne infuses water with her mana, Frieren infuses the flower to learn how internally works.
    Can people teach each others spells. Yes, it takes times but is absolutely doable. We see as an example Defensive Magic, Fern already knows Zoltraak but doesn't know Basic Defensive Magic so Frieren teaches her Defensive magic from scratch.
    Grimoires are a shortcut, Imagine in Pokemon terms you have a lvl 10 Pokemon that on lvl 30 learns Eartquake, you can train it until then, or use a TM to do it immediately. Is a similar concept.
    Why is clean clothes a legendary spell. While I don't have a definitive answer I feel there is 2 Main reasons, first is as any spell it will take time to learn and just until recently there was a war, quality of life magic wasn't really the focus, but warfare spells were. And secondly, Qual and I guess other demons killed a bunch of mages during the war, reducing the number and likely making magic knowledge scarce in the process. Frieren said now there is less mages around.
    Ubel advantage is she is simple-minded. "Cloth can be cut" if is made of cloth (or hair) it can be cut, is just that simple, her spell follows that logic.

    I'm confused by the 'shock' of knowing she masks her mana. It's clearly, and abundantly explained early on. She does it because demons are sensitive to it. It's not just about throwing off 'everyone' it's SPECIFICALLY about throwing off demons, as is explained dozens of times. It's not some super clever writing, it is shown early on to have a very direct purpose. It isn't trying to subvert anything...it's obvious. xD

    • @satrio.d.c.purnomo9973
      @satrio.d.c.purnomo9973 4 місяці тому

      The analysis on mana suppression and the reason behind it at 5:18 is also incorrect Flam learns the method of concealment to kill demons I am guessing at first was to ambush demons, she learns this from Serie which flam actually took it a step further instead of using just for ambush she uses it to deceive the demons, this is why she suppress her mana output to only a certain amount. But this practice in series' opinion is impractical as essentially you need to suppress your output for the rest of your lives and it took practice and consistency to actually be good enough that it fools the demons or a magician a small instability in mana flow which can be detected by demons and proficient magician can actually detect what the magicians is doing which basically will reduce the chances of success in killing demons, so only serie, flam and her student frieren and by extension fern practice the mana suppression method.
      1. And they also explain mana suppression is not the only factor in winning a magic duel your knowledge of spells, weakness of the enemy, how quick you channel magic is also a
      factor

    • @Kotiha_Studio
      @Kotiha_Studio  4 місяці тому

      I never questioned that Serie can suppress her mana as well. I just didn’t think she would actually use it, because, just as you said, she sees it as impractical. I also know that for Frieren and Flamme it’s main purpose was to deceive the demons specifically, but in the process, they also misguide every other human mage who isn’t skilled enough to notice it, even if that was not their main intention. And that can give you some potential combat advantage against non-demon opponents as well.

    • @andylozano5193

      They also emphasize that when doing a spell the visualization has to be very strong. That’s why the mage who controls water can’t manipulate people’s blood she doesn’t have a great understanding of the human body to picture doing that. Or the create flower spell you have to see a flower you recall and then you can do it it isn’t a “create your own flower” spell. Ubel’s Cut spell is magical scissors.

      Weirdly enough, I was thinking that a delusional psychopath (Ubel??) with a crap ton of mana and training would be unbeatable. I can't think it could be that simple, though. It's possibly better explained in the manga.

    • @meursaulty6672
      @meursaulty6672 3 місяці тому +5

      Frieren said it herself perfectly. "Can you imagine beating a mage who controls water in the rain? I can't."
      You have to have a powerful imagination to be a powerful mage, but at the same time, this excess of logic and visualization can be a hindrance in battle. This system is actually beautifully balanced.

    • @As-tray
      @As-tray 3 місяці тому +1

      @@meursaulty6672 it's bullshit. The cape-whatever guy _imagined_ that noone can defeat him as well. Then Ubel came and _imagined_ that she defeats him. It is simply ridiculous.
      With such system, should the plot wish so, even some first-grade "prodigy" will be able to kill Serie with some half-assed explanation of "oh my he was able to imagine defeating her, could you believe it?? He's, like, totally unhinged!!"
