  • This documentary was recorded in rural Bangladesh. Many problems there stem from the poor conditions due to poverty and the environment. Over-population, flooding and subsequent poor-hygiene cause many children to become malnourished. This starts a vicious cycle which allows infections to weaken a tiny child’s immunity, and in turn causes a multitude of health issues. The doctors, nurses, staff and volunteers from the International Centre for Diarrhoeal Disease Research, Bangladesh (ICDDR,B) have been doing their best, helping this situation since their foundation back in 1960. Educating the population about this important information is a worthy mission. The expertise and tireless dedication of these public health workers are making the world a better place.
This piece documents the work of a scientist with a very realistic goal: to try to determine the foods being eaten by a specific group of part of the population in a set of villages in the town of Matlab, in the district of Chandpur. The Centre has a good relationship with the villagers as it has been sending public health officials to help for decades. By hiring local field works, our scientist gets the needed data in a non-obtrusive way. His research project then tries to determine just what recipes the children are eating and analyze them nutritionally.
These doctors and researchers have known for decades that to prevent infections and other problems, infants should consume nothing other than breast-milk for the first six months of life. It contains the complete nutritional requirements for infants in this age group. After this period, it becomes important to introduce nutrient dense foods.
