Hey David....... 1978 in houston, my friend drove a 1976 Thunderbird. And yup, we took that car to the big disco's. The girls loved it. We were pimping back then. LOL!
my Mom had a 69 Buick Electra Limited, and she could parallel park very very well, and one day she parked in front of her work in this big almost 20 ft car very smoothly and got out and 2 men on the sidewalk applauded
yep sure did, and she could parallel park better than anyone. She told me how to do it, but I am still not as good as she was, but there is less parallel parking now days too Mom was a 1922 model and she passed 4 years ago, but I still smile when I think of this
I drove a '78 Town Car in 1981, Dove gray with matching leather and 1/2 vinyl roof, but it only had a 400 instead of the 460. It truly was a pleasure to drive. That thick pile carpeting just invited everyone to take off their shoes, it was so comfortable. You have a really nice ride. Take care of it, and it will take care of you.
My sister was driving her old Lincoln. I was in the front passenger seat with a puppy sleeping in my lap. She totaled another car. The puppy slept through it.
MRW2276 I did the same. He makes a good point about the bumpers. I had a 1984 LTD crown Victoria and hit a 1993 Oldsmobile head on. I totalled the Oldsmobile, the transmission was dislodged and the radiator looked like aluminium foil. All that happened to mine was a broken headlight and it bent the bumper about 10 degrees down.
I totally agree!! I have a 75 Cadillac Sedan DeVille and had a 74 Lincoln Town Car and the Lincoln was so much better. Quieter and better ride and the 460 was a great motor. The Lincoln was a 'pillared' hardtop which made it a much tighter body. My DeVille's body is a bit 'looser'. The best I get with the Cadillac is 14 mpg and I would consistently get 16 to 17 with the Lincoln. The only problem I had with the Lincoln was those little 'mini vents' malfunctioning. I became an expert on fixing them! The window regulator in those looked like an octopus! I loved the thermometer like speedometer in the Lincoln. Looking again for another Lincoln!
I have an '89 Town Car. A friend who collects cars has an '89 Rolls Silver Spur. I mentioned to him that I'd love to ride in his Rolls one day. He said, "Anytime. But, your Lincoln rides better and is more comfortable." That floored me.
@@maxpower2592 yes better than cadillac my 86 fleetwood brougham d elegance is a smooth ride, but my 84 lincoln towncar is way smoother. Almost cant feel the bumps. And the lincoln has 50k more miles. Sorry to burst your bubble.
This was hilarious and that is a beautiful car! I'm right with you on the special kind of love for good old fashioned American Land Yachts. There's just something about a massive comfy car that gently floats down the road, ignoring any and all road defects.
That is correct. The thing is 8.2L. That's absolutely crazy. The ONLY production engine that was ever bigger than that old GM 8.2L is the Dodge Viper's 8.4L v10. Not even the Bugatti Chiron's w16 is bigger than the GM 8.2L (Chiron = 8.0L vs El Dorado 8.2L)
My dad had a 76 regular Eldorado with the 500cid V8. But, it had a bit more power because of the Fuel injection. 215sae net ponies compared to 190 carburetor. Torque was 400, compared to 360. Salesperson said dad would save fuel which was a crock. My dad enjoyed the Xtra power, never the Xtra MPGs.
With the inexpensive cost to purchase, maintain, and repair these land yachts, it doesn't matter how much gas it uses because your total cost of ownership will still be lower than a car payment.
One of the most entertaining reviews of an older car I have ever seen. Makes me want to go out and buy one, I actually looked this year model up on autotrader classic to see what examples are going for.

I have to comment on this review. First off, gorgeous car. The '77 - '79s are my absolute favorites and are what I think of when someone says Lincoln. For a younger guy you seem to have an understanding of what luxury used to mean to people (still does to some, me included). Thank you for not crying about no backup cameras, touch screens, lack of airbags, poor handling, etc... as so many of your peers do. Large, roomy, smoooooooth ride, quiet cabin, soft seats, light touch steering and nice subdued, formal styling and size - exactly what is missing from (so called) luxury cars of today. I'd rather your Lincoln than any Ford GM Chrysler product made today. As far a those previously mentioned safety features, well, people knew how to drive, park, and pay attention to their surroundings and weren't going 40 mph over the speed limit with their faces buried in their cell phones. You get 2 thumbs up for for your Matthew McConaughy commercial - fantastic.
Horsepower, the rate at which an engine produces torque, is not that important when you have the massive torque of 460 cubic inches. That's why is was critical in those smog-controlled years to buy the biggest engine possible, 460, 455 or 440 depending on brand. They would not get that much less miles per gallon, if any at all, than their smaller 400 and 350 siblings as the smaller engines had to work so hard to move those barges around. A 460 might get two MPG better than a 351 under identical circumstances, but the reserve power was worth it.
Great car...welllllll built! I had a body shop and a guy in Phoenix hired me exclusively to do all of the body work on that vintage of Lincolns...He bought them and restored them...turned around and sold them...the metal in the fenders was like spring steel...it took a small sledge to hammer the metal...amazingly strong bodies. Heavy automobile!
2:30 - I love how there's nearly a whole foot of slack in the drivetrain after shifting to park :D Beautiful car. Please look after it well. They won't ever be made like this again.
Yeah those old land yachts looked elegant but were built as tough as a truck. With truck like mechanicals underneath, its no wonder there are still so many around.
My 1978 Mercury Grand Marquis with 460 was the best mountain car ever made. Studded tires, supple suspension, lots of weight, and long wheel base to easily correct a slide with plenty of time. Crisscrossed the Cascades in Oregon weekly for years in that thing. It was completely awesome and the all wheel drives had no chance of keeping up. Love these cars.

So many great yachts. One of the most beautiful and outrageous to me was the '79 Mark V, Givenchy Edition in Crystal Blue Moondust Metallic (light Purple with deep purple leather interior). 2.5-3 feet longer than a modern Range Rover in a two door couple. ah yes, when I worked at my uncle's gas station as a teen he had one of these, bright yellow and he'd let me take it out for lunch runs, I remember it was like a waterbed on wheels...loved it! good thing he owned a gas station
way back in the late 70s, my neighbors would bring their over pollution controlled cars to me, I would tear off all the vacuum hoses, and then go tearing around the neighborhood with an extra 50 horsepower after flipping the air cleaner lid, taking off the air pump belt, and adjusting the timing just before it pinged on premium fuel. What a difference an hour worth of work would make! the General Motors Quadrajet 4 Barrel was the most fun, I would loosen up the spring to the air valve secondary, remove the lock out link (that forced you to hold the gas pedal down for several seconds to allow the vacuum to drop), then they would just fly from the flipped air cleaner! Did I mention removing the catalytic converter with a test pipe from Canadian Tire?
Good stuff, but I think here in CA they would give you the death penalty for doing something like that. Our state is run by complete lunatics, especially when it comes to restriction on cars.
With all of the aluminum and carbon fiber you can't tell me that there's not someone else who wants to see the redesigned and lightweight versions of these land barge, epiphany of luxury ten yards to turn boats. Talk about beauty. I'd rather toss and old iron or steel body around with twenty feet past my ass sliding everywhere while I nail every aspect of driving as these young punks with electronic controlled cars just look at me like I'm somehow nuts but are programmed to believe that there's no way anyone is that good.
My step grandpa who is now 96 yrs old and in good health to this day, was riding in his brother's blue 1976 Lincoln Continental back in the early to mid 1990s, recalls the old Lincolns taking out a then new Chevy blazer that pulled out in front of a gas station, the lincoln had no more damage than a broken headlight and a slightly twisted bumper, after the police settled everything from there his brother dropped grandpa off at home and went home like nothing happened except for a spike in his blood pressure. And grandpa remembers to this day like it was yesterday, and tells myself and the younger generation, you never experienced luxury cars if you didn't grow up in the 1960s and 1970s. Back when Cadillac's and Lincoln's were the gold standard for luxury, not Lexus, Audi, Mercedes Benz, Jaguars and BMW.
Yeah because America could produced good cars back in the day but Mercedes BMW etc all these German cars have always been top of the line even before the US started producing it's own cars in mass

Hello from North Yorkshire England! Our local solicitor had a beautiful white Continental back in the late 1970's that was a real head turner and one of the most distinctive cars I have ever seen.
You are ONE LUCKY Young Man!! I would give anything for a car like that. Like you I have loved beautiful HUGE cars my whole life. Of course, I was 8 years old when your car was new, So I remember how beautiful these cars were. That is why it is SO DISGUSTING having to ride in today's cars. I HATE NEW CARS. They all look exactly alike and ride horribly. Take good care of that beauty!!
Thank you so much for this review it brought back a great memory back in the mid-80s my grandparents took us on a cross-country trip in a car that was extremely similar to this one... When it got the California well it broke down so we flew back.
Your segment hit two landmarks from my not-too-distant youth: the Sunflower State (still here) and the car (my Grandmother had a '79 sedan that we all took to FL and back once). Thanks for the recall--it brought some of the few good memories I had of my childhood. Also, I have to give you kudos on the showmanship. Well done. Now, I noticed the shirt--is that an actual club in the area? Win
I really enjoyed your video! thanks so much for posting. Lincolns and Cadillacs of the sixties and seventies rode better than any new car available today. Nothing as smooth ,quiet , comfortable is available today . (including any Mercedes Rolls or Bentley..I know, I own them). And frankly the handling was not all that bad unless of course, like you indicated you're driving on a Mountain Road at over a hundred miles an hour., but who does that. I'm saddened that all the new cars including Lincoln Cadillac have hard seats & hard suspensions. thanks for your posting of this great video. you have a good personality to go with it.
@@joshfitzgerald9961 the C-Body's were (Newport, New Yorker), but the B-Body (Cordoba) was rougher. Mopars torsion bar front suspension and leaf spring rear wasn't the best, especially on their smaller cars
Great Vid. Humorous and sarcastic....my kind of fun. I had an 1982 ford station wagon that was a huge boat but it was nice in it's own way. I also agree with you about cars these days looking all the same is sad. It's all about the bottom line not creativity.
Lord Apophis Yes it is. I'm actually disappointed with this video due to the fact he made no mention of this car's condition, and its luxury appointments. Instead focused on the cars size 79 times That is a factory CB radio.
Lord Apophis indeed. I own but two 79 Mark Vs, both fitted out with the citizens band radio, and it's pure joy. When ever I do take my Marks out for a joyride, I listen to the truckers, and get loads of good tips as to the traffic Conditions down the road, and they say where the cops are hiding.
Had a 79 mark 5. Best car ever! Picture on the freeway, doing 85, kicked it up in reverse and matted it. Held straight, smoked it for about a quarter of a mile, , dropped it into OD, and never slowed down to more than 55. That trans and engine was so damn bullet proof. Though it would eat the tires up, if you gave her a chance! Will own another one, cause nothing compares to old Lincolns. .
That is the most beautiful car I have ever seen. It’s so sorry the world is not perfect that this car can resist crashes or not destroy the environment we need to live in.
You will find with most of cars of this era, that by rolling the stock camshaft ahead 4 degrees or so (using an aftermarket adjustable timing chain set and keeping in mind that the distributor timing will have to be readjusted) will cause the engines to wake up. I did this to my '78 Eldorado 425 with very satisfactory results. The engine seems quite eager now, has a better sounding exhaust note. Dual exhaust also helps and using stock type mufflers and resonators will keep things very sedate.
I learned to drive in my mother’s 1979 Lincoln Continental, four door, powder blue. Half vinyl top with opera windows. At 14 years old I drove it 1300 miles to our family spring break vacation in Florida. After that I’d “Borrow” it often picking up my friends as my parents had 3 cars always leaving one at home. I felt like a rich kid driving that huge gaudy thing the size of a limo. No mishaps, never got caught.
Wow, beautiful even today. In 79, I had Caddy Seville brand new. My brother had a 76 T Bird. My dad had a 76 Caddy Eldorado. I regretted trading my 76 Buick 225 coupe. My mail man would joke that the cars on my block was the reason for our energy crisis. Mine 79 Seville was the SMALLEST car on the block. Big Chrysler 5th Avenue, Lincoln town car, Sedan deville...Olds 88.... Those cars w/today's tech would be AWESOME MASTERPIECES.
@@ImperialDiecastThey ( Mk V ) had a wider range of interior material options , more paint options, limited editions models and just about everything came standard including 4 wheel disc brakes. I know, I was there. Stupid innocence way long gone. That Lincoln of yours made me remember..a lot of other car guys who love your show felt the same I bet. Thanks Hoovie and keep up the great work!
ah yes, when I worked at my uncle's gas station as a teen he had one of these, bright yellow and he'd let me take it out for lunch runs, I remember it was like a waterbed on wheels...loved it! good thing he owned a gas station
Nice ending. Nice car that looks great. Nice video.
way back in the late 70s, my neighbors would bring their over pollution controlled cars to me, I would tear off all the vacuum hoses, and then go tearing around the neighborhood with an extra 50 horsepower after flipping the air cleaner lid, taking off the air pump belt, and adjusting the timing just before it pinged on premium fuel. Did I mention removing the catalytic converter with a test pipe from Canadian Tire?
nice!
Your a true hero.
Good stuff, but I think here in CA they would give you the death penalty for doing something like that. Our state is run by complete lunatics, especially when it comes to restriction on cars.
Then they paid you to put it all back for the annual smog test!. Easy money .
WhiningCanadian Especially when it was resonating through a cheap sheetmetal air cleaner :)
That bombing the Nurnburgring joke was an absolute classic!😂😁🤭🤪😹🥳🤯✌😂😁😁😁
The Lincoln commercial you did was BRILLIANT
I miss this content. Now it's all $100k + cars. Roots Hoovie.
You got that right bro!!!
Yeah because America could produced good cars back in the day but Mercedes BMW etc all these German cars have always been top of the line even before the US started producing it's own cars in mass
The video that first introduced me to Hoovie! It’s been a wild ride since then! 😆 Hoovie, Car Wizard & Mrs. Wizard, Car Ninja, Euro-Asian Bob, Magic Mike, Junior Mint, Ed Boulion and everyone else along for the ride! 😉
They all owe it to Hoovie from my perspective.
Having an appointment with his mechanic with this car, is like getting to the vet with his T-Rex.
Superbe voiture !
Merci !
Iv'e got a 79 Collectors Edition with the 400 2bl, if you think yours is slow, you need to drive mine, it'll make yours feel like a Formula 1. All things considered, I love it for everything it was meant to do because it does them so well...
4bbl & duel exhaust really wake it up
Cant believe you wen through that whole video without ONCE mentioning the CB radio!!!! :( :(
Lol, I was thinking the same thing!!
That’s a beaut. I’ve never seen one like that before.
Hello from North Yorkshire England! Our local solicitor had a beautiful white Continental back in the late 1970's that was a real head turner and one of the most distinctive cars I have ever seen.
That’s one of the biggest two-door automobiles ever made. The ‘73 Imperial was a “little” longer.😮
Take good care of that beauty!!
that is a car, not that plastic toaster Prius
Scott Walper never mind that the Prius gets five times the gas mileage!
The Prius Googoomobile will save humanity!
Phoggbank IDGAF about that
I really enjoy your videos! I love all the little side skits that you do, makes for great video!
Love watching Tyler read his script in these older videos! He's come a long way. Now about that his Porsche that he dented. . .
Just that footage with Mathew’s voice would literallt sell so many cars if it was on TV
Lol lol the copy of the Lincoln commercials was fantastic lol subbed off that alone
my aunt & uncle had one of these growing up, it was a magic carpet ride!
Thank you so much for this review it brought back a great memory back in the mid-80s my grandparents took us on a cross-country trip in a car that was extremely similar to this one... When it got the California well it broke down so we flew back.
@ 3:52 (The only engineer hear about Nürburgring ring is the one who drop bombs on it during WWII) savage 😂🤣
Love it, a beautiful car!
My father owned the high end trim of this Lincoln. It was absolutely majestic
Loved those ‘70’s Lincolns! Our neighbors had a Town Coupe & we had a ‘71 Mark III. I thought they were the shit!
they were!!!
lol McConaughey
Your segment hit two landmarks from my not-too-distant youth: the Sunflower State (still here) and the car (my Grandmother had a '79 sedan that we all took to FL and back once). Thanks for the recall--it brought some of the few good memories I had of my childhood.
Also, I have to give you kudos on the showmanship. Well done. Now, I noticed the shirt--is that an actual club in the area?
Win
what a world of difference we've gone from these old gems to smart cars
Gotta love the Smokey and The Bandit relic... The CB Radio/handset all in one... Genius
You forgot to mention Chryslers , they were also very smooth riding cars especially the mid '70s with the pillow top seats.
They were better than any car (including Bentleys and Rolls-Royce).
@@joshfitzgerald9961 the C-Body's were (Newport, New Yorker), but the B-Body (Cordoba) was rougher. Mopars torsion bar front suspension and leaf spring rear wasn't the best, especially on their smaller cars
The Porsche he backs into is his own. You see it in his driveway at the beginning of this video.
I watched this video when it was new and am watching it again after watching your VINWiki episode Tyler! Still one of my favorite videos!
I have this same car, 78 Town Coupe. Greatest ride I’ve ever had!!
I've owned 11 Lincoln's and sold Lincoln's at the dealership...Greatest luxury car ever!!! God bless
Hahaha hilarious video, you're about to get very popular bro :p
You were right
*very right*
Your careful and thoughtful examination of what you took from your nose sold me. SUBSCRIBED.
Can't believe I just stumbled across this. Now I need to dig out my '79 Collector's Series.
Great Vid. Humorous and sarcastic....my kind of fun. I had an 1982 ford station wagon that was a huge boat but it was nice in it's own way. I also agree with you about cars these days looking all the same is sad. It's all about the bottom line not creativity.
you are going to get big on youtube! nice videos!
Came across this while trying to find the differences between the continental coupe and the mark v coupe... great video.
I came to this video after trying to find some 70s Cadillacs
omg loved the "please stand by" screen
Fallout is a hell of a game
Is that a CB radio on the dash?
Lord Apophis Yes it is. I'm actually disappointed with this video due to the fact he made no mention of this car's condition, and its luxury appointments. Instead focused on the cars size 79 times That is a factory CB radio.
styldsteel1 I thought so, I've heard that cars from the 60's and 70's had those as options and plenty of people had them.
Lord Apophis indeed. I own but two 79 Mark Vs, both fitted out with the citizens band radio, and it's pure joy. When ever I do take my Marks out for a joyride, I listen to the truckers, and get loads of good tips as to the traffic Conditions down the road, and they say where the cops are hiding.
styldsteel1 you're living a motorist dream chief. Make sure you keep those cars.
Lord Apophis thank you very much. Much better driving a time capsule, rather than just reading about them in an automotive book. Have a great day.
This video made my day! ... when cars were land-yachts...
Will own another one, cause nothing compares to old Lincolns. .
Having flashbacks of my folks '78 Ford LTD. I took my driver's test in it and... and failed because I couldn't parallel park the beast.
Should've borrowed your friend's Datsun 210.
Well unchoke that glorious V8. Buy another one
G55STEYR With the V8 unchoked, it will produce more horsepower and keep it's monstrous torque.
He could always swap a 69-71 spec 429 Cobra Jet in there, same engine block as the 460, much more power
That is the most beautiful car I have ever seen. It’s so sorry the world is not perfect that this car can resist crashes or not destroy the environment we need to live in.
My brother had a 1977 Town Coupe when he was a young Pimp in the 80s lmao. I loved that car.
Damn you man handle, and mistreat your cars and I find it quite entertaining.
What was the point of hitting the Porsche? Was it already damaged? I hope so
Jordan Little it was already damaged the crushing noise was from the license plate thing
Yeah it was.
Does it matter the Lincoln rules!
@Jordan Little already damaged and it's his own Porsche
If you look in the driveway early in the video...you may find his silver Porsche in the driveway.....
And 6 MPG!
actually about 8 to 15
100... yards per gallon :D
If you could afford to drive it..you could afford the gas. =)
Russell Sova gallons per mile lol
but nothing beats the "smiles per gallon"!
I need a Land yacht in my life
Yes, you do.
Those old Lincolns were great! Bolt a big screen to the hood and you could host a Superbowl party.
And the AC was so cold you could store meat in one.
I had a baby blue one of these and dam that was a fun car to drive!!!!!!
My friends mom hade a limited edition Bill Blass MK V . You could have ran over a herd of cattle in that thing and not feel it.
whats the difference between the mark v and the town coupe?
@@ImperialDiecastThey ( Mk V ) had a wider range of interior material options , more paint options, limited editions models and just about everything came standard including 4 wheel disc brakes. The came with a fancy Cartier made clock. There was also options only for the Mk V like a special roof and something like a anti- skid ( called sure track or something to that effect) brake system. It was a early version of ABS.
Im sure there is more things but thats what I know from memory.
