People like Jack Tunney, Mean Gene, Howard Finkel, Hebner etc. were an important part for building the illusion of viewing a real competitive sports event. They were all forming the serious frame for the picture full of carnage and whackyness called the WWF.
That was the Golden Era for me. We all really believed Tunney was boss, myself included. It was just fun being a kid and enjoying wrestling and not knowing how things worked. When Tunney came on to make an announcement, you knew it was big.
Vince's answer to Jim Crockett. Both stiff on air with personalities of dead trees. Tunney along with Billy Red Lyons were given jobs as stooges when they handed the Toronto territory over to Vince.
Correct me if I am wrong but I think Tunney being involved and having an office in canada helped the WWF broadcast there didn't it? Thanks for your comment 👍
@@jonathancoote8432 From what I've learned over the years was that he wasn't a bad guy by any means. Sadly he got a bad wrap for being... well, a punchline. But it just goes along with other funerals for wwe staff/performers. Rick Rude supposedly didn't have anyone there for his. It explains why Curt Henning was so hateful towards the federation in his later years.
@@TopTurnbucklePodcast Now, in all fairness I could be mistaken. It was years back when I heard this. It may have just been rumor. However I've never heard a different claim about it. And I agree. He was after all a member of the family so to speak.
@@furrybogard9724 I also heard the same for mean Gene. So sad to think that all these years of working together and being on the road for the love of wrestling some people could have shown a little more respect :(
No, Jack Tunney was a Canadian promoter who was friends with Vince's father. When Vince brought out Jack Tunney's promotion he made Tunney the "on screen" president of the WWF. During the 80's to mid 90's Vince appeared as an announcer even though he was really running running things behind the scenes and Jack Tunney was the president and top authority figure on TV 👍

Totally agree and this is an excellent point 👍
Absolutely 👍
I grew up watching Jack Tunney and I really liked him.

He was Canadian like me mates, so of course I dug him.
🇨🇦
I LIKE Jack Tunney FORESITTER OF WWF (1984 YL TO 1995 YL)
I did too! 👍
I enjoyed him too 👍
..he was on my bubble gum card set in the 80s
Awesome! Have you still got the card?
@@jonathancoote8432 ..no long gone
Shame. Might have been worth something now 👍
Unjustifiably put the Macho man in a position he'd rather not have been in.
And Miss Elizabeth too! 👍

What I remember was kayfabe no one respecting the guy. IRL when he had his funeral no one showed up. It was actually terribly sad no one cared.
That's so sad and pretty awful of the WWF/E.
They should have at least sent someone. 😔

He was great in his role. His wooden delivery made him believable. He wasn't supposed to be an on air talent(kayfabe) so it fit perfectly.
Totally agree. 👍
100%
I remember Jack Tunney. Loved him....He handed out the punishment and signed the big matches....
Is That McMahons Father?
In the video there is a clip of his father 👍
