"Written and Directed by: Christopher Nolan
Produced by: Emma Thomas, Charles Roven and Christopher Nolan
Written and directed by Christopher Nolan, Oppenheimer is an IMAX®-shot epic thriller that thrusts audiences into the pulse-pounding paradox of the enigmatic man who must risk destroying the world in order to save it.
The film stars Cillian Murphy as J. Robert Oppenheimer and Emily Blunt as his wife, biologist and botanist Katherine “Kitty” Oppenheimer. Oscar® winner Matt Damon portrays General Leslie Groves Jr., director of the Manhattan Project, and Robert Downey, Jr. plays Lewis Strauss, a founding commissioner of the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission.
Academy Award® nominee Florence Pugh plays psychiatrist Jean Tatlock, Benny Safdie plays theoretical physicist Edward Teller, Michael Angarano plays Robert Serber and Josh Hartnett plays pioneering American nuclear scientist Ernest Lawrence.
Oppenheimer also stars Oscar® winner Rami Malek and reunites Nolan with eight-time Oscar® nominated actor, writer and filmmaker Kenneth Branagh.
The cast includes Dane DeHaan (Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets), Dylan Arnold (Halloween franchise), David Krumholtz (The Ballad of Buster Scruggs), Alden Ehrenreich (Solo: A Star Wars Story) and Matthew Modine (The Dark Knight Rises).
The film is based on the Pulitzer Prize-winning book American Prometheus: The Triumph and Tragedy of J. Robert Oppenheimer by Kai Bird and the late Martin J. Sherwin. The film is produced by Emma Thomas, Atlas Entertainment’s Charles Roven and Christopher Nolan.
Oppenheimer is filmed in a combination of IMAX® 65mm and 65mm large-format film photography including, for the first time ever, sections in IMAX® black and white analogue photography.
Nolan’s films, including Tenet, Dunkirk, Interstellar, Inception and The Dark Knight trilogy, have earned more than $5 billion at the global box office and have been awarded 11 Oscars and 36 nominations, including two Best Picture nominations."

I’m so beyond Proud of you for your explosive 🧨 (pun intended) growth over the last year, I really was hooked on your content after your experiences you’ve mentioned with your dad. You provide appropriately biased (passionate, not influenced) perspectives and insights/feelings on the movies you review better than any other channel
Based on a true story✅
Legendary director✅
Robert Downey Jr ✅
Dialogue heavy movie ✅
Sounds like a certain Masterpiece that came out in 2007....
Ooo I know this one, Zodiac
Saw this exact comment on someone else’s channel lmao
Zodiac?
Zip up his pants when you done
Zodiac is my all time favorite movie lol
It's brilliant, the way they start of the Lewis Strauss(Robert Downey Jr) hearing. It makes you wanna watch the movie again in order to fully understand his intentions and doings. Christopher Nolan movies are always movies you have to watch two or three times to fully understand the entire concept the movie was trying to tell you. The rewatchability is better then any other movie in this world!
It was pretty interesting. It's the first time I've went home and researched the true events in a movie afterwards in years.
Cillian Murphy and RDJ for Academy Award Nominations at the very least. For me , this is RDJ’s best performance I’ve seen and thought that Lewis Strauss’ intentions and story was displayed so intricately in the timeline of how this movie plays out, and I think I might need a rewatch to catch eveything , as much of Nolan’s work does. Cillian Murphy disappears into his role as Oppenheimer and could’ve brought an incredible performance to the table with just his facial expressions (eyes mainly) and body language alone, which only goes to show how incredible he is. Emily Blunt , Florence Pugh and Rami Malek are also brilliant here. The two segments that really stood out to me was Emily Blunts hearing and Murphys speech after the bombings of Japan where the sound design and imagery takes centre stage, being some of the most immersive of Nolan’s work to date. Also the looks and sounds of the atomic bomb were out of this world. Although, of dialogue heavy and just long runtime movies aren’t your thing this probably isn’t one to watch for you on paper, although I’d still recommend giving it a go.
This movie was amazing. I’m a huge History buff and Christopher Nolan fan, so this was right up my alley. Absolutely fantastic film, great performances all around. Maybe a tad too long, but man what an experience this film is
Barbie: Creative set pieces and occasionally clever meta humor. On-the-nose preachiness that basically watches like a feature length version of that awful Gillette commercial.
Oppenheimer: Far more hearings/meetings than I was expecting, but a powerhouse performance from Cillian Murphy and a brilliant use of shifting between multiple points in time to tell a gripping story.
I’m actually about to watch this one in a couple of hours. I haven’t had through the roof excitement for this one, but I’m sure it’s going to be great. Nolan always makes movies that are very interesting, so I’m expecting this movie to fall in line with that.
Reply after you watch it. I want to know what would happen if you are too hyped. I am going to see it on IMAX 70mm next week. I just need to know, lol.
@@shaggyfeng9110 I was so excited for this and it lived up to it. Amazing film
Its was beyond amazing. Certain parts in the movie makes you forgot your existance, and fully puts you into the story. There where parts where everything went silent and i was like, o yeah, im a movie theatre. What the fuck just happened
@@shaggyfeng9110 I don’t think it’s a movie that would disappoint you if you were really excited for it. It’s basically what I expected. An incredibly well acted, well shot, and compelling film that made me think about the world we live in. If you have those expectations, they’ll very likely be met.
@@jaihart9358it’s phenomenal!
At some point, I hope that Sean says that this movie is *BOMBASTIC* 💥
I agree. This movie *blew* my mind.
This film will be explosive in the box office
...or goes all 90's and says "That was DA BOMB!💣" hahaha
Yeah I’m sure Barbie will be a smash… 😂
As a huge Nolan fan, I’m hyped for this! I think it will be top 3 Nolan films for me but can’t see it passing Inception or The Dark Knight.
For me it’d be tough to beat The Dark Knight, Batman Begins, Inception, and Knight Rises
You guys are forgetting about interstellar too
@@QuiGonJack10nah. Much as I like Nolan, I’m not the biggest fan of that movie. It’s not bad by any means, and I still like it, but it’s no where even close to the four I listed for me personally. I might even put Dunkirk higher for me personally.
@@NinthShinigami Not a big fan of Rises but The Dark Knight, Inception, Dunkirk, and Batman Begins are my favorite Nolan films and are going to be hard to beat. But I’m sure Oppenheimer will beat half of those.
@@QuiGonJack10 I need to rewatch Interstellar it’s been awhile. Might move up the list after rewatch.
Great film, coming from a mathematics degree I loved the physics angle the film took, and recognising all of the scientists as they were revealed.
Saw it in IMAX and it was amazing. Great performances, excellent editing, and an amazing score. Not my favorite Nolan film, but very excellent.
As always, excellent review Sean. I am watching this movie in IMAX this weekend
This film was incredible in so many ways. My only complaint was some of the story and dialogue was a bit hard to follow
Can’t wait to see this one tomorrow! Nolan always delivers imo, I’m anticipating it to land in my top 10 favorites of the year 👍🔥🔥🔥
Of the year? That seems like quite a low bar for a Nolan film, i’m hoping for a top 10 of the decade
@@lou5164 I like Nolan and his movies but usually not by thaaaaat much. I really don’t see this hitting my top 5 personal favorites of the year, much less my number one favorite. Top 10 is a safe bet, and I can see it at the 8 or 7 spot
Nolan is overrated
@@aidanlastname0187interesting. Who are some of your favorite directors?
@@LoudonClearDon’t get me wrong, I like Nolan’s films, but people literally worship the ground he walks on. His movies aren’t THAT good. For example: I watched The Prestige last night, which most people love, but it was so mid.
🎯 Key Takeaways for quick navigation:
01:51 🎬 Oppenheimer is a character study about the complex man who invented the atom bomb and explores the toll it took on him as he realized its implications.
03:35 😨 The film creates an emotional complexity, where the audience roots for Oppenheimer's success while feeling dread about the potential consequences of the atomic bomb.
06:18 🎭 The movie portrays Oppenheimer as a flawed human, exploring his ego, irresponsibility, and conflicts, rather than romanticizing him as a perfect hero.
10:16 🌟 Robert Downey Jr.'s performance shines, reminding viewers of his acting talent beyond his iconic role as Tony Stark.
13:53 🤔 The film is thought-provoking, delving into the complex ramifications of Oppenheimer's actions and how they shaped history.
15:29 📜 The movie is different from typical Nolan films, being more of a drama with talk-heavy scenes rather than action-heavy spectacles.
16:25 ⚠️ The film is rated R for sexual situations and nudity, particularly in two sequences involving Oppenheimer's relationships.
19:40 🤨 Some aspects feel unclear or lacking in development, particularly the portrayal of Oppenheimer's wife and certain plot elements, making the movie more interesting than emotional.
23:38 🎥 Overall, Oppenheimer is another triumph for Christopher Nolan, a thought-provoking film tackling significant historical events.
Summary by HARPA AI 🧬
This is my most anticipated movie of this year and one of my most anticipated movies of all time. Nolan is my favorite director of all time so I’ve been very excited for this movie. I’m watching it this weekend so I’m extremely excited to see it!
Can't wait to see it. Great cast and great director in what will hopefully be one of the triumphs of the summer!
No to Barbenheimer, but yes to Mission Impossible and Oppenheimer. After John Wick chapter 4, they are my most anticipated movies.
@krazykajeevie Yeah, definitely. I'm going to go see that this weekend too..
@krazykajeevie I will do that.
@krazykajeevie you're gonna love 4. It's the best in series, in my opinion.
@krazykajeevie Going back to the topic of Sound of Freedom. The theater where I live decided to keep it an extra week and they delayed getting Oppenheimer until August 11th. So I decided to go to Sound of Freedom too. I only heard about it a week ago. It sounds really good.
@krazykajeevie I just got home from seeing Sound of Freedom. Wow, what a powerful movie. Very emotional, especially if you have children. It's a movie that deserves everyone's support. I'm glad to hear that it's getting a global release now.
I’m looking forward to seeing it, but I absolutely did not like interstellar, dunkirk, or tenet so I don’t have super high hopes in Nolan anymore.
I think the film being more interesting than emotional is a conscious choice to make us feel involved and ponder upon the implication of his work as Oppenheimer does and he valued his work more than anything so I think the film being emotionally distant at points is just meant to show the mental and emotional state of Oppenheimer
And let’s be real, emotion is the weakest part of Nolan’s filmmaking. Either it is cold and sterile like Tenet or teetering towards melodrama like Interstellar.
That's true
But I think he got it right in prestige
Absolutely loved this movie. #1 of the year for me!! I’m still thinking about it and I got out of the movie hours ago. I also agree with you sean on how Oppenheimer and his relationships weren’t very explained
Hey Sean, will you be doing a spoiler review for Dead Reckoning? I'd love to hear your thoughts on some of the spoiler aspects of the film!
Been waiting for this review. Barbenheimer weekend is officially in full swing. Lets get it🔥
It was a stunning work of art!!! There were so many deep moments!!! The cast was spot on!!
I just saw it tonight. I genuinely think this movie is perfect. The best movie of the decade so far.
Saw both Oppenheimer and Barbie today. Oppie first and then Barbie. Barbie is a fun movie, you laugh and enjoy it even though it is a bit cringey and preachy.
Oppenheimer though is Amazing! Probably my favorite movie that I saw in a theater. Cillian Murphy knocks it out of the park, the visuals, cinematography is brilliant. Couldn't tell where the 3 hours went. Oppenheimer is a must watch (Seeing all the scientists represented that you probably have read about is also great).
Having just seen the movie a second time I gotta disagree with the mention of Kitty’s testimony at the hearing not being consistent with her character. From the first second she’s on the screen she seems, to me, to be very sharp, witty, serious, and assertive
There was one additional aspect of one of the scenes between Murphy & Pugh than what was mentioned that is becoming infamous pretty quickly and definitely the most unsettling scene to watch with family so just be careful
You Indian?
Watched it in the theater last Saturday. Great movie. I'm going to buy it on 4k day one. I might even go watch it in a theater again.
It’s funny, the two scenes that you mentioned in the mixed section where censored. I am in India now and I guess they wanted to avoid them altogether
All the times the politicians and scientist gathered,I felt like I was there. And it felt real. And I imagine this is what happens in reality. Love Oppie's interactions with all these world renowned scientist.
I'm so pumped for this movie!
The ending lines gave me chills
Are you going to re-rank the Nolan films? Would love to see where you place this one.
No shit.
@@Scottdick6 why so serious
For Barbenheimer, I watched Oppenheimer first. I truly believe Oppenheimer is one of the best films ever made
I live out in Oak Ridge and I tried to get tickets to see it this weekend with my friends but because of Oak Ridge’s history it’s impossible to get two seats together this weekend
I watched this film first and then Barbie. Yea, this is one of my all time favourite Nolan movies. Very intense. Although I did find the 3rd act a bit confusing.
Sean and I agree for 2 weekends in a row. That's a good feeling.
The dialogue was fantastic! The moments where great minds that are at odds provided some snappy moments. Lots of sass 😂😂😂
I’m doing Barbenheimmer tonight! Barbie at 8:20 and Openheimmer at 11:00!
thats the best order to watch it in🔥
Can’t wait to see it!💥
I have no interest in seeing Barbie, but I am looking forward to Oppenheimer. I love Nolan and want to see how he tackles a drama like this. Great review! Thanks Sean!
Saw it in Australia yesterday at 2 its amazing its a character study Nolan's best film.
In today's film industry people would only see 3 hour movies if they were marvel films and not films like gone with the wind, lawrence of arabia or ben hur
The third highest grossing movie of all time is avatar 2. A 3 hour movie.
What are you on about? Not marvel
Im seeing oppenheimer 1st on the early release day because this my most anticipated movie of the year im really excited to see it
Only problem with this review is I don't think he mentioned Cillian Murphys brilliant acting once
These type of movies not normally my thing but this movie was amazing and that's why I like Nolan he makes great movies
You should do a reranking of the Christopher Nolan films would be interesting to see where this falls in the ranking
That was without a doubt, the best way to show a sponsor without it being tedious.
I really enjoyed Oppenheimer, I rate it a 9.0 out of 10. Cillian Murphy that played Oppenheimer did an amazing job is acting was superb. He could do sad, angry, and very joyful. Him and Albert Einstein(played by Tom Conti ) were some of my favorite characters. Emily Blunt (Katherine “Kitty” Oppenheimer) played an amazing wife in this movie, and stand on her own as a great character to parallel Oppenheimer. James Remar that played Henry Stimson, for the scene he was in was very recognizable with his voice. He did an amazing job. Robert Downy Jr that played Lewis Strauss, the morally grey character. Did an amazing job as seemingly the villain, character. For me, this is best acting role. From what I seen him in. In addition, David Dastmalchian that played William L. Borden, was a great character. Also with him going through friend and to where he ended up. and Josh Peck (played Kenneth Bainbridge), came an extremely long way from Drake and Josh. With his acting, the characterization he had was amazing.
Murphy stole the show he was outstanding
The best moment of the whole movie was when in the darkest hour, when Little Boy was about to destroy Hiroshima, Oppenheimer said "Avengers... assemble" and Iron Man, Mary Poppins, Jason Bourne, Freddie Mercury, Green Goblin, Polka Dot Man and Rodrick Heffley assembled and destroyed Little Boy instead, but what really sent chills down my spine is when Oppenheimer said his famous words "I am become Avenger the assembler of heroes." Thank you Christopher Nolan, truly a piece of cinema.
This is a weird one for me…I honestly did not like this movie at all, and typically I’m a Nolan fan to where I feel bad that I didn’t like it.
Weird territory for me, but coming out of it knowing I didn’t like the movie helped me appreciate movies as subjective art. I know I’m 1 in 100 who doesn’t like the movie, but I appreciate that basically everyone else enjoyed this movie. For me, just way too long and I didn’t think the character development was there for me to actually care. Never thought I would have the complete different feeling of a movie that gets 90% + for both critics and audience scores.
seeing this in IMAX 70mm on monday. super excited!
This may be weird but considering the hype around this movie even a 9/10 score and the other critics praise seems to make this movie not feel as good as it could have been. Expectations of best picture but overall looks to be some kind of top 5-7 Nolan flick. That being said, can’t wait to see it in theatres in a couple days
Oppenheimer, is a film that i truly believe is one of the best movies ever made. It’s thought provoking, well acted, well written, beautifully shot, and extremely well directed. Christopher Nolan will go down in history as one of the greatest directors of all time, alongside Hitchcock and Kubrick. I love his movies, especially The Dark Knight, Inception and Interstellar, but Oppenheimer is his masterpiece.
It stars Cillian Murphy!!! Forget everyone else! I have felt scared from the time I was six. We were told we would die young. This is why teenagers in the 60’s acted the way we did.
Also I was hoping sense it was rated R it would of shown some of the tragedy from the bombings really help us understand the impact it had in Japan.
This is Nolan's best movie, in my opinion. The fact that there is no CGI in this film when other films are so CGI heavy makes it even better.
A MASTERPIECE!!!!!!!!!!!! A MAGNUM OPUS!!!!!!!!!!! THE MOST IMPORTANT MOVIE OF THE 21ST CENTURY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I watched Barbie then Oppenheimer and I’m glad because I was devastated after Oppenheimer. Both were great but Oppenheimer was fantastic
Just came from the theatre it was a spectacle. Definitely see this in theatres this is cinema.
You missed the sex scene in the middle of the hearing 😂 was hilarious
0:20 I'll go see Oppenheimer first for the laughs with the family and then I'll go see Barbie for the real serious stuff
Ironically the underlying theme of Barbie was serious haha
You completely forgot the third sex scene in the interrogation room where he (or maybe Kitty) sees himself having sex right there with Jean
With the relationship between Oppenheimer and his wife in this film I actually found parallels to another Cillian Murphy character, Tommy Shelby, with Shelby’s second wife in Peaky Blinders in that they are both physically present and together but the wife can’t emotionally connect with the husband because of his personality, trauma, experiences, etc.
Saw Oppenheimer on 70MM IMAX and it was phenomenal! A masterpiece and my favorite Nolan movie ever along with Dark Night.
I’ve seen well over 1000 movies in theater since mid 80s and this was in my personal top10% ever so top100-150 movies I’ve ever seen in theater.
I really enjoyed Oppenheimer, but I really feel like Nolan should have explored the bombing of Hiroshima and Nagasaki to perhaps add more emotion to the story and add more regret and guilt to Oppenheimer’s situation. Does anyone else have any thoughts about this??
From a personal perspective I think not. While it is important to demonstrate the destructive cost of the bombings, by refusing to keep the audiences eyes on the burned citizens and focusing instead on Oppenheimer's reaction it keeps the storyline grounded in that perspective.
Enjoy the review Sean I seeing it next Saturday
Definitely agree about his wife at the end when she’s talking with the board. Like its Emily Blunt and she great and scene is awesome but where was that the whole time and where did it come from.
The film could’ve been trimmed down. Very heavy on exposition. 60-80percent of film felt like I was watching something made by a different director. Third act seemed a bit forced. Murphy’s subtle performace was very good. One scene in particular should earn him an oscar nom. Am a big Nolan fan and really wanted to like the film, but some of his older works are much stronger. Biopics seem to be a bit outside of Nolan’s sweet spot.
I’m doing Barbenheimer on Saturday! So hyped!
I thought you’re gonna give it an A, 9.5/10
Thank you so much for the book recommendation!! Bouta get it.
Going tonight with my dad in IMAX. I don’t worship the ground Nolan walks on, but because he is an interesting director, I always want to see his next Big Thing. Outside of TDK trilogy and Dunkirk, my dad was not familiar with his filmography. So we watched Memento, Insomnia, TDK trilogy, and Inception. He still hasn’t seen Interstellar or Tenet, but I asked him to come see this new one.
When our family found out the reasons behind the R-rating, I became especially nervous because I run a movie review blog followed by MANY people who respect my opinion (outside my friends and family). I chose to buy a ticket despite the sexual stuff, but bless you for clarifying where it is in the movie! Will make it much easier to look away. His restraint in movies like The Dark Knight is admirable even though he pushed the PG-13 envelope with that one. Disappointed with his need to go the other way now, even if it’s only a couple of scenes.
What’s the big deal with the movie having a couple sex scenes? I mean we’re all adults. You really have to look away?
@@chodxnielmobile671some people have significant others and looking away during those scenes is being respectful. Pretty much every husband/boyfriend knows that. You wouldn’t know.
@@chodxnielmobile671 But NEVER do we need to see simulated sex and/or nudity between two actors! It’s not just Nolan that is exposed to such a scene, and his producer Emma Thomas is his wife, for goodness sake. It’s a sacred act between a MARRIED man and woman, not for everyone to see. When people usually say “adult” or “mature” movies, that really just means they filled it with gratuitous content!
@@mediamaniac898 Was it like softcore, or like hardcore porn type nudity? Watching it with my dad today and it seems like it's gonna REALLY uncomfortable to watch a 15 minute sex scene.
@@SamsClub973this is the goofiest thing I’ve ever read. Never have I ever been told by my spouse or other women before to look away at a sex scene.
I'm seeing the film tomorrow in imax at 10:30am I'm seriously so ready!!!!
I saw it today. I’m not gonna lie, I was super disappointed. To me, this feels like Oscar-bait and overall was not good. The style choices were all over the place, the sex scene was out of nowhere, the most important parts of his story were left out in favor of boring dialogue sequences and the only good segments were saved towards the end (which, btw, is the climax of the movie and happens an hour before it ends!) This is just another of Christopher Nolan’s recent film fails. To me, the majority of people who praise this movie just want to seem cultured when in reality they are being blinded by an actually sub-paar film. Wouldn’t watch again, 4/10.
If Cillian Murphy doesn't get a Oscar for this film there is something up with the world
About to see it in imax in an hour! And then tonight at 7:50 I got tickets for Barbie! Gotta do the double feature
I think reading the book beforehand ruined my experience. It goes into such great detail on his entire life & fleshes out *all* of the characters.
The editing was a little too sporadic for me & the entire movie at times felt like a trailer.. if that makes sense?
drum beats had my theater rumbling
I love BirdDogs! And would totally use your code if it was “x amount off” (just don’t need another cup LOL)
this movie would have been better just focusing on the Manhattan Project stuff. The last act conflict and the final villain just didnt do it for me and took it down a grade.
Seen it today. I was bored through alot of it. But that's on me because the movie was high quality. If you like the subject or character then it's a solid watch.
absolutely brilliant film
Agree on everything u said . Many thanks 😊
This is another Nolan masterpiece and for me this is definitely a return to form after his last two entries had failed to pull me in fully. This story found a way to interest me even thought I was going into this thinking I knew basically what was going to be covered and that it would be solid but not gripping. Instead, it introduced me to characters and events that I had no idea existed. Combining all of that with the terrific script and stunning performances that this film has all over the place and it delivers a very engaging story that had me completely engrossed from start to finish in the quickest 180 minutes. The film is very bleak and that's exactly the point when dealing with such an awful creation and such slimy people.
I haven’t been this excited to see a movie in a while
I loved it!
Wish I could drive so I could go watch this thing without having to wait on my dad being fully convinced
