    Note: There's really no "right" or "wrong" when it comes to music production. You can usually do pretty much whatever you want. As long as you end up with the desired result, the way you do things doesn't really matter.
    In FL Studio there are almost always many different ways to do things. It's one of the big differences between FL Studio and other daws. In other daws there's usually a certain way things need to be done, while in FL Studio you have more flexibility. That doesn't mean that one way is "wrong" while another isn't, but there are some ways that are just simpler and more efficient than others. In FL Studio there actually is a "preferred" workflow from the developer's point of view, which is supposed to be the fastest way, but they still give you the option to do it differently if you want to.

    • @FireWalkMusic
      @FireWalkMusic  2 роки тому +2

      Indeed! Speed is key. I find that this is usually the quickest and easiest way to automate volume in FL Studio. If I need to automate the volume on the master though, I usually put the fruity balance on the first FX slot on the master. That way I can automate the volume feeding into the compressors etc. later on, allowing me to control the dynamic difference between the breakdown and the drop for example. :)

      Thanks! Much appreciated. It's really hard to compete with all those shorts. It's not an ideal format for tutorials like this. please don't, shorts are just there to lull people in and make them scroll endlessly and mindlessly, they are not fit for tutorials as you just can't jump back in the video to the relevant part to hear it again, no, you have to watch the whole video again from the start so that youtube gets more engagement/watchtime to sell to advertisers :(

    • @FireWalkMusic
      @FireWalkMusic  Рік тому

      @@TripTiltI agree, it sucks. They just did it to compete with TikTok. People have such short attention spans these days, so they appeal to that. Unfortunately, spending days making a video is not really viable, when it only gets 1-2000 views at most, which is why I haven't been making so many videos lately. It's probably partly because of all those shorts that prevents them from showing up as you said..
      When people search for something, they tend to just click on the shortest video, because they want to learn it as quickly as possible. The problem is, that not everything can be tough in half a minute, so shorter isn't always better when it comes to tutorials. I've always tried to keep my videos as short as possible, typically around 3-4 minutes, with no unnecessary babbling. :)

      Hi, glad you liked the video :)
      It's easy to end up doing things "the hard way" in FL Studio because there are always so many ways of doing things, and not every way is going to be the most efficient. In other daws there's always a certain way you're supposed to do things, while in FL Studio you have tons more flexibility due to its modular nature. That's perhaps its biggest strength, but it can also be its biggest weakness because it can easily introduce some confusion and "enable" people to adopt a less than ideal workflow. :)

And once you've become accustomed to doing something a certain way, it can be hard to "unlearn" it. :)

    Very interesting take that I had not considered before. I do generally favour using the Fruity Balance Volume Knob method, adjusting the default linked 'mapping formula' to 'Input*.8' (to correlate the 80% volume setting of the Fruity Balance to 100% on the automation points).

  • @svensvensson8102
    @svensvensson8102 2 роки тому +3

    No right or wrong here as you say, except the fader option maybe. I prefer Fruity Balance though, or some other gain plug, in most cases as it remains tied to the track even if routing changes and can be placed last to avoid messing up the levels going into the FX chain. The drawback is one slot less I guess but I can live with that :)

  • @Bronwyn031
    @Bronwyn031 2 роки тому +1

    This video flies in the face of everything that I've ever seen or been taught. You mix into the Master. You need the master to set the overall loudness of the final mix. This is why you first gain stage everything to keep the master from clipping. Shoot for an overall master loudness of -6db to -8db to leave your master engineer room to work. Moving the master volume all over the place would seem like a headache to achieve this.

    • @FireWalkMusic
      @FireWalkMusic  2 роки тому +3

      This is about automating the volume of individual mixer tracks and elements in the mix, not the master itself.. Every mixer tracks is routed to the master. This method allows you to automate the volume going into the master from each mixer track. It's the exact same thing as using fruity balance on every single mixer track for example, and then automating that way, except this is quicker and simpler. It's why the mixer is set up this way. You should of course not automate the master channel itself, but that's not what this is about at all. It's just about the levels going into the master. This method is post fader for each mixer tracks, which means that you automate the volume after the processing on each fx slot. If you automate in the channel rack for example, then it will be post fader, which is not always ideal. Especially if you use a compressor, or a de-esser or whatever, because it will be impossible to get the the threshold settings correct with the input volume constantly going up and down. It's then better to automate the volume after the processing has taken place. :)

      There's really no "right" or "wrong" method here, as long as you achieve the end result you're going for. That said, I've found that this method is usually the fastest and most efficient. I usually only use fruity balance and such on the first FX slot on the master and such, for example, if I want to automate the volume of the entire track, feeding into the compressors and such, which is usually next on the master chain. . :)

  • @FabioRaitz
    @FabioRaitz 2 роки тому +2

    Adjusting the volume on the channel rack could interfere in how to signal is processed in the mixer channel, for ex, if you have distortion, drive, or high compression, if the input signal for those effects gets lower, it will affect how it sound. That might be useful or not, it depends on what your intents are. For just volume, I would stick to the route knob or the Fruity balance.

    • @FireWalkMusic
      @FireWalkMusic  2 роки тому +1

      Indeed. You'll need to consider pre and post fader when automating volume. Automating volume before it goes into a compressor for example, might not be a good idea, unless it's master channel automation. I recommend sticking with the method I recommended in the video :)

    • @FireWalkMusic
      @FireWalkMusic  2 роки тому +1

      Hi, thanks! Glad you liked it. Yes, when automating volume it is important to consider pre and post fader issues. For example, if you use the channel rack to automate the volume, you essentially adjust the volume before it enters the mixer, and therefore also before it goes into compressors and other dynamics plugins you might have loaded (de-essers etc) on any given mixer track. That will mess up the settings in the plugins because you will typically set a threshold in a compressor, for example, to trigger it. But then the automation causes the signal going into the compressor to go up and down, and this will change the way it behaves compared to if you put the volume automation post fader. That way the signal going into the compressor will be more constant, and the volume automation will be done after the compressor has done its job.
      It's the same with the fruity balance. If you put it on the first FX slot you automate the volume before the compression etc, but if you put it on the last one then you'll do it after. In most cases, you'll want to have it after. :)

    • @FireWalkMusic
      @FireWalkMusic  2 роки тому +1

      I recommend using the method shown in this video, utilizing the mixer. Automating the channel rack will cause the volume to go up and down so it is technically volume automation. That said, there can be drawbacks to this method. There is a difference between post and pre fader volume automtion. If you automate the channel rack volume then you adjust the volume going into the mixer track. If you have a compressor, a de-essential or something on that track then having the volume going up and down can affect the processing in a negative way. It's usually better to automate the volume after the effect chain, which which will be the case when using the method recommended in this video.

    I want to know what would be the best site to view concerning Loops/Samples of Bass guitars and Strings with the bpms that can be used in Gospel and Worship music. Either free or paid it doesn't matter NEED HELP. I'm new at all of this FL Studio stuff and actually this is my first Daw I have ever tried.

      Hi, there are lots of sites that sell sample packs for just about any genre there is. My affiliate partner for loops and samples are Loopmasters, you can check out their loops and samples here: www.loopmasters.com/?a_aid=5d496680b59cd
      But there are many other great ones too. Just do a google search and you'll find tons of samples. They usually provide demos so you can listen to the samples and see if you like it before ordering anything. :)

      I recommend Ample bass P Lite - free plugin in top quality. Modo Bass by IK Multimedia is great too. For strings I recommend The Orchestra by Sonuscore and Cremona Quartet by Native Instruments. Not cheap libraries but worth every penny spent

    Just discovered this channel thanks to this video, and found so many useful tips, subscription well & truly earned!
    I do have one issue though... when using the automation method shown where you use the volume to the mater knob to automate, for some reason, the automation does not get exported when exporting to wavs for mastering, and I am not sure why.
    Anyone any ideas?
    Edit: Should add, this is relating to the individual channel wavs that area created, not the master (the automations are apparent in that), and I have also made sure that the relevant settings are used for exports re insert & master effects.

      OK, so did a little playing and used my grey matter... seems that (obviously) the reason the individual tracks don't have the volume automation applied, is that it is done at the master level, as it automates the volume out of the track into the master.
      That would be useful in a mastering (perhaps mixing) scenario, but if you need, as I did, the volume automation to be part of the arrangement, then using the fruity balance plugin is the way to go... still way better than automating the sliders, which is what I was doing :)

    Hei! Hva er dine tanker angående volum automation og filter automation? Er det ikke sånn at hvis man bruker filter så vil det gi også en annen lyd enn når man bare bruker volum? Mener å huske jeg la merke til det men kanskje jeg husker feil :p

    automating channel volume is even easier...don't even have to touch the mixer and leave that for the overview of your mix
