You shouldn't cause skin damage by letting the fish lie on the frozen snow. And on fish that size, don't damage the gill plates by holding with one hand … support the stomach with the second hand.
I absolutely applaud you all for releasing these fish. I know alot of idiots that would keep all they can....and sadly, that's why our world is doomed eventually. 30 years ago I never caught little 4 inch sunnies all day. Now, it's so common. Wonder why.... Enjoyed your video. Babe is a class act.
catch a 40" pike on a medium heavy rod and come back and tell me that. or even hand over hand on tipups on lake of the woods. been there done that...hooked for life.
A good fisherman coming within 8 inches of a 43" northern has done well??? That's a fish of a lifetime? Babe, Mr. Roach, S&W get ready I'm going to buy a camera for next season. Get real boys Minnesota has alot more to offer than Lake of the woods 40" northerns and 30" walleyes.
Nice video. Sure wish an explanation of rod model, proper explanation of rig up (size hooks, weight of line, split shot weight, depth, species of bait, etc.) Most of us like to know that stuff as well.
Not an artic warrior at 8:27 that stemmed from sending a prototype to Al at Lindner Media Productions. You know that as well as I do Babe. if you remember saying "I like it" at Owatonna Cabela's. Again, if you know of anyone that would like to invest in this, my own original idea and creation. and operate within the parameters of United states patent law, let me know. I caught my first pike that size this summer off shore :D I was so excited! But really hard to unhook, i was very unprepared as a catch and release person and being by myself, but I was able to safely release him and he swam away: )
wish we could get 20+ .in Conesus Lake but folks that get fish like that in late Spring will most likely keep the fish and /or mount it. too many weekend warriors. what can ya do?
Is it common to use circle hooks for pike? In the UK we use trebles, but I've been considering using circle hooks. What's the bite to hook-up ratio like? And do you loose many fish?
hey i was wondering what type of bait or lures should a begginer use to go pike fishing because i want to start ice fishing in a little lake that i think the deepest part is 70 ft so
Never been a big Ice Fishing fan but if here would be a lake what gives huge Pikes like this lake,i would fishing there in summer and winters for sure..My record pike is 111 Cm and 10.2 kg Northern Pike.We use meters here in Finland so not sure how many inchs is 111 cm.Big catch for everyone in 2017 Summer! 👍
Can anyone explain how to set these type tip-up rod combo's ? What kind of rod holder/tip up is that? Please explain a little about the rig if possible string pound test, hook size/style, etc. Thanks so much !
I use a 30" medium heavy rod with 20# suffix 832 ice line with an HT rod tender. its basically a 1x3 piece of wood about 18 inches long and it comes with a clip that holds your line and a standard rod holder on the back.and when a fish takes it make sure your bale is open so it can peel line. once that tab is flipped it throws the flag. go set the hook my man. I always use a 20" leader with heavy clasps too. single 1/0 treble with dead smelt. poke the minnow through the belly and set it about 12-18" off bottom.
try large live baits, sucker minnows, or pull large shad raps. I've caught 3 of them while fishing for walleyes on night crawlers attached to a lake spinner.
also in Canada EVERY HOOK (at least in the Providences of Manitoba and Ontario) must be de-barbed (squish the barb flat to the hook with a pliers) or barb less (just a wire with a single point), this is on the USA side of the lake, so barbed hooks are legal

I respect fisherman so much more when they release the fish for other generations to catch and enjoy also
Great to see you putting them back :D
I don't release them because we eat them
Looking good babe! Me and dad are going up this week! Hopefully gonna long one of these monsters!

I've always heard the Manitoba side is better. Can anyone confirm/deny?
Lol if you caught a fish that big in the uk it would snap that little rod in half
What state is this located in?
Eric Zbinden I think it's in Minnesota
actually, 1 state Minnesota and 2 Providences of Canada, Manitoba and Ontario, 2 countries Canada and USA
fish dont fight to well in the cold water

Yep same here but it was a tiny hook that the fish decided to take with him. I bought a couple new things after that day
Wenn ihr den Fisch in den Schnee legt wird seine Schleimhaut beschädigt und er bekommt durch den Verlust seiner Schleimhaut Pilz und verendet
A 43" pike straight onto the ice? Hmmm Glad she/he swam away cleanly
Colton C. Male pikes only grow to 31 inches

we are done in NY by March 15th; but they spawn early in Conesus Lake. females here are 12-15 lbs for a real nice fish
I couldn't catch fish with a net in a pet store. Never have had much luck fishing.
We use to have good fishing in my area but the invasive species have totally screwed up the great lakes in my area.

Dylan Kenna I'm 40 and my biggest pike was a 13" pickerel. 🙁 (Long Island, NY - very limited freshwater fishing)
Dylan Kenna nobody cares
Yeah well being trying for a slot limit in WI this year at the spring hearings that's for sure!
ive never understood catch and release I catch and eat
fuck you.
intelligent
i fish to eat big beautiful fish
let the smaller ones grow eat the big ones
the big ones will produce more eggs...also the smaller ones taste better, big fish tend to have parasites and so forth.
Anyone see the garbage rolling in the background around the 4:22 mark?
***** it's sad I noticed that? Or that I'm observant..I just found it funny
Babe winkelman you guys are pro fisherman

i do, but i dont know how to post on here, you have somewhere i can send them too?
How heavy and also did you have to release
Can anyone explain how to set these type tip-up rod combo's ? What kind of rod holder/tip up is that? Please explain a little about the rig if possible string pound test, hook size/style, etc. Thanks so much !

What time of year
Growing up In warroad and fishing Lake of the woods my whole life I have caught several 46" northern on it!
wow.... i've been trying exclusively for the last couple years to get a 40"+ pike... 37" is all i've come up with
try large live baits, sucker minnows, or pull large shad raps. I've caught 3 of them while fishing for walleyes on night crawlers attached to a lake spinner.
Nice fish! What type of minnows are those?
Most likely sucker minnow
Not one Musky!?
Hi
Lkigtt
How did you film all those under the ice shots?
With a camera
🌍
ice fisherman with earings oh ya its MN hillary supporter
what are they using for bait? chubs?
medium sucker minnows
ahh I've never caught a pike before
Come up north! They are plentiful!
my record so far is 45 inch pike
Thanks a nice pike!
why don't you guys use treble hooks?
They use circle hooks, circle hooks set themselfs. So they can set multiple lines and not have to worry about setting the hooks
also in Canada EVERY HOOK (at least in the Providences of Manitoba and Ontario) must be de-barbed (squish the barb flat to the hook with a pliers) or barb less (just a wire with a single point), this is on the USA side of the lake, so barbed hooks are legal

I cach and release the fish in to my mouth
