I have wanted a new work bench since I built the workshop. In this workbench I have incorporated lots of storage.

If you put your clamp racks on the side of the new bench, you will have all that drawer space for other things and the clamps will be easily accessible.

Lovely to see that you're never afraid to reinvent your workspace. Do, review, learn and apply (improve).

Love it! You could always put some hardwood or even softwood trim around the front edge to flush up the frame with cabinets. Cracking job 👍

Matt - I'd recommend some foam liners for the drawers. Just looks after the kit. You could also do shadow foam for some tools.

Yoj could add decorative trim to the edge then they will encapsulate the drawer edges.

Nice new bench Matt. As I'm still working under the limits of No Cover and at the mercy of Scottish weather, I'm aways away from a bench like that. Take care & stay safe.

Hey, thanks for the video. Cool idea! I haven't gotten to the end of rhe video yet, but I imagine you could put a face frame on it to build it out flush with the tool boxes and add some edge protection to the OSB.

I could do but I think it’s fine

just fasten some lats to the front edges to hide the depth of the cabinet because of the middle devider - 2 benefits - looks better and hides the OSB edges :)

Great video 👍 I'm new to your channel have binge watched serveral of your vidoes over the last few days, to reduce sideways racking and to prevent the toolbox tipping forward if to many draws are opened I would have utilised the bolts and threaded holes in the side of the toolboxes for the side handle and used them to bolt the sides of the wooden work bench to it, or you can still use them now for securing more items like chargers, I've used toolboxes like this for many years I'd recommend lining the draws with thin foam/non slip Rubber mats or even something like 2mm mdf it prevents scratches and tool rattle and vibration when moving bench around.

I think the key to small workspaces is to keep most things mobile. When your working on a project you’ve got to have the ability to move stuff around so you can work on the current pieces. Which lets be honest are always changing.

Nice little bench. Those drawers for the power tools are calling out for some shadow foam inserts. Will stop them moving around when you open and close the drawers. That space above the Vac could also be a drawer for the more often used tools. Will you paint it, do you think?

Sound move to put that separator between the cabinets, it will absorb planing loads and stop racking..
Brilliant use of space, especially those bungee cords!. I find drawers are the most efficient way to keep tools tidy and accessible in my limited space.

This is a very smart idea of a work bench. It motivates me to take at look at the space underneath my workbench. Right now it’s also a dumping ground.😢. Good job, Matt!🎉

  • @NomadMakes

Its interresting to see that you're downsizing the workbench. I did just that some time ago, to fit my bench across the room instead of the long way. And I put it on casters as well. For planing I just make sure it is butted against the wall. And by the way that happy accident with the overhang is just a good excuse to put on some hardwood edgebanding. Looking at this bench compared to your old one, I would personally miss the possiblity to clamp to the front. So, I would add a "skirt" or whatever to the front edge. It will be cool to see you working on the bench in future videos. Cheers and thank for sharing.

Nice bench! I have a bunch of those style of toolbox in my shop and they are really great for storage. One comment i have is you may want to take a drawer off and fix the bottom or sides to the bench. I have on a few occasions had the drawers open on a bench when moving and it really wants to tip the box out. On the power box side you may want to add a shelf for some extra storage.
Will you be doing any dog holes in the bench top? Mine uses them and i recently bought some inexpensive but very nice dogs on Temu, they come in 3/4" or 20mm.

I love the idea of a bench with the overhang! Also, I recently got a workmate bench thingy. I really enjoy the clamping options on it! That got me thinking, could it be done or implemented on a larger bench? This is of course the moment to steal that idea and turn it into a video. 😂

Opportunity here to blag some free gear from that shadow foam company. They're all over youtube at the minute and you could kits your new draws out so all the drills sit neatly. Avoids the draws becoming a dumping ground. Like mine 😅

I'll be curious how the clamps in drawers works out. I have mine on the wall similar to how you had yours. Do the dust extractors interfere with your legs/knees when you sit on your tall chair at the bench? Interesting how everyone deals with their own limited spaces. As always, enjoyed the video.
