I was drawn to ZZZ specifically because it doesn't have an open world where I have to spend countless hours exploring to uncover all the hidden stuff. I'm an adult working 5 days a week, I'm happy to have a new chapter every 2-3 weeks to play in the weekend. And once I'm done i really don't mind just logging in for 15-20 mins a day burning the stamina to build up items for the next banner, it's actually working pretty well. It's's very reminiscent of Monster Hunter, which was fundamentally, a game that let's you do things at your pace and doesn't rush you to say, hey this thing happens on this week, after that, you'll miss it etc etc, other than limited banners

I tried Genshin. But never stuck with it. The world is too big for me and I'm a working man with 12 hr shifts 5 days a week. My mother has Cancer, we have bills to pay, and I will never have enough time to "explore" the vast world of Genshin just to get pulls. ZZZ is just right for me. Small, well crafted locations, combat all around, and doesn't overstay its welcome. Not everyone can be a streamer, a youtuber, or even play games 24/7. If ZZZ needs something to help it, it's not a vast open-world, imo.
Edit: Thanks for the support guys. I never intended to garner attention by bringing up my mother's medical situation but thank you all nonetheless! I just wanted to stress the point that someone with a situation like mine could never play Genshin or other open-world games as much as the next gamer. Time isn't something everyone has, basically.

I'm personally ok with them not turning ZZZ into another open world Genshin. The focus on the battling is what keeps me so engaged. Being able to go in, use up my stamina for the day, then leave so I have time for something else is a blessing since I'm also working full-time.
I understand your point of view and I can see younger audiences getting bored because there's nothing to do after completing everything. But also it would give them time to play other Hoyo games that do require all of that extra time. So there are some pros and cons to how the system works.

ZZZ is the first gacha game that has kept me engaged. I tried Genshin and HSR (in mobile) but only ZZZ managed to keep me coming back to the game. One of the reasons I enjoy ZZZ is that it suits my casual playstyle. I can play for just 10 minutes a day during the week and dedicate over an hour once a week without feeling like I'm falling behind. Love the characters, the bangboos and the gameplay flashiness too.

I think something that can't be understated is the community and target audience. I really, really DON'T want ZZZ to be flooded with younger players more typical of Genshin just in pursuit of more players - rife with complainers, toxic shippers and every manner of maladjusted terminally online behaviour under the sun - a smaller but healthy community is miles better than a saturated, toxic one. ZZZ being popular with working adults too busy touching grass to beef on Twitter or Reddit is one of its biggest strengths right now.

I personally think zzz is heading away from there other games on purpose so it can establish itself as it's own thing and not be conpared as often. I think this is great because things people expect in hoyos other games may not happen and that's fine because it clearly does things differently and better, at least for me. I think this is a reason why a lot of people seem to have disregarded it because it's not following the norm but I don't want zzz to be normal, i want it to be unique, goofy, and serious all at the same time which they're doing a great job at. With the way it was set up I did think there might be some potential for procedural generation and a kind of roguelike experience but it was all just pretty simple and maybe dragged on a little too long. I personally didn't find most of the event story or dialogue to be interesting. I hope that if this was meant to be an experiment, they really rethink how they tell event stories.

ZZZ just reminds me of Hoyo's older game Honkai Impact 3rd. Level based combat gameplay with no "true" open world and every patch there seems to be a completely different gameplay event to keep things fresh alongside the normal content releases.

You know what I think the casual draw of ZZZ could be after beating the main content each week? Minigames. They want to make New Eridu a big alive city to explore, so why not go the Yakuza/Like a Dragon route and fill that city with activities to do? Minigames to play, a business management minigame to do in the background to maintain your proxy cover. Just fun silly stuff like that. The minigames in Yakuza are so good they're arguably the real main show with the games.
Currently all we have in terms of minigames are the three arcade games in Godfinger. We did have the Bangboo tower defense mode but since it was an event it's gone, but that could be turned into a permanent mode because it was really enjoyable, and would give a reason to keep going back to Reverb Arena. They could add motorcycle driving trials with the Sons of Calydon to give a reason to keep going back to Blazewood. They could add a mystery game with the PubSec agents to give a reason to go to the police station they hardly did anything with. Hell Genshin Impact has a whole TCG minigame in it, and while it's not very good, that's an avenue ZZZ could go in.

Star Rail hasn't had a story that's reached the same level of quality as Genshin or ZZZ, Penacony was close but multiple things ended up bringing the story down significantly, one of the primary ones being Firefly herself. ZZZ's current story has frankly, been the best main story writing we've had since early HI3.

They also listened to the criticism (that I also wrote in the feedback) that their endgame modes need more and steady rewards over each patch, not just weekly reset content that is done within a couple runs on the first day of reset, even for casuals.

PS. Anyone who plays one gacha and expects it to keep them as occupied as say WoW, Warframe, D2, etc you're crazy 😂. Gacha games are good on the side or in a rotation. I play them in a rotation, and on top of work, and exercising I always have something to do if I feel like playing and I am never fully caught up likd I was in early Genshin.

I would like to see them try to make one hollow a semi open world instead of a corridor combat. They could make it some sort of extraction game mode where you enter, try to get as many whatevers as you can and go to designated exit points. That could be a good "I'm done with dailies/weeklies, I can do this now" thing.
The difference between doing this and doing hollow zero is that you do get the exploration an open world provides and if they do it right they could make the hollow procedural so it doesn't feel stale. Bloodborne is a 10 year old game and the chalice dungeons are still a great blueprint of how to do a lot with a little, giving dozens (hundreds even) of hours if you want do do them.

I think what ZZZ should expand on is the slice of life stuff.
Let us manage the shop and decorations in detail. Let us go about as the agents and live their lives a bit. Explore their individual home areas. I still want to see what Victoria Housekeeping looks like. It would be nice to expand parts of the cities and areas to give us more space to explore while keeping it contained.
Living everyday lives doing things that can net rewards for the combat part.
I could enjoy a monthly or weekly treasure hunt where you go about collecting clues to unlock a bigger reward.
Definitely various outfits for our agents unlockable via quests and rewards and some gacha... despite me hating the gacha part.

I suck at this game so If I can get 6 stars in Deadly Assault, 7 S-ranks in Shiyu Critical, and make it to floor 19 in the Tower, then it's not too difficult after all.

What abt community made mini games.
    For example- The overlords ride:
A racing mini game where u can compete with other, make your own tracks and play on tracks made by others.(Kinda the like the dungen events from genshin). They can also add new bikes and costomisations to unlock/buy(not a good Idea but still possible).
    Another idea,
CO-OP during combat and overworld(the amount of random shit that can become entertaining when u are with a bunch of your homies is unreal)
    Final idea,
Some sort of daily routine that involves new interactions with characters and npc's.Not a dating sim but something more close to a animal crossing vibe(i personally don't think that this idea will work but who knows, animal crossing players are basically cultists and I want no smoke with them)
If nothing els just add a fuck ton of henati..... liks in-game hentai.........I am not a proud of this idea.

A sonic adventure style Chao-garden but with Bangboo would be super cool, where you raise, modify, play with and manage Bangboos that you can then use in different ways in minigames and other aspects of the game. Hell you could even implement an AFK style minigame where you then send those Bangboo out on missions and they'll farm mats and resources for you.
Also, one the ZZZs biggest strengths is the worldbuilding and storytelling - that's whats hooking me more than anything. If they can implement shorter, slice-of-life story quests, I'd be sooo happy. Doesn't have to be anything special. In fact, it could be super mundane and consist of mostly fetch quests - as long as there are cute little stories told. I want to learn more about the world, the people, the history.

    • @aitonono

That's kind of the tradeoff with the game still being so relatively new. I personally like that after I've finished the main content I literally just log in for 10 minutes, get all my daily stuff done, and maybe mess around with rotations with characters I own, and go play something else that will most likely take my time up. I used to play HSR but the combat in ZZZ is way too fun for me to care for that game anymore. The game isn't meant to take up all your time and it's more of a marathon for building characters than a sprint - funny enough ZZZ is the only of the main three hoyo games that actually DOES respect your time - for a game that doesn't have auto-fight (*cough* HSR) I appreciate that I don't have to spend that much time doing menial things and still feel engaged when I do need to do them.
Edit: also for the battle pass they have if you're just doing daily stuff and completing the events as they come you hit 60 (max) within like a week or two. It's pretty laid-back comparatively to other ones I've seen.

Nowadays it's all battles, battles, battles, puzzles only in events, and even them very few of them are actually hard enough to be considered puzzles in my eyes. The rays and stuff in Melinoe hollow from the currently ongoing event are just BUTTONS (and pretty buggy at that lol). On the otehr hand, combat is itself a puzzle, a strategizing one. What characters to use, how to use them, etc. But still, I kind of liked some of the hardest puzzles I've seen in the TV mode, seeing it replaced with A-to-B-to-C is sad. That said, the roster is smaller than some other games but the designs are really good. ZZZ is a really good example of quality over quantity. I may only log in a total of 30-60 minutes a day depending on the event, but it's short and sweet without overstaying its welcome. The game's structure also allows me to finish things in parts at a time.

As to what they could do is add more hollow exploration. It can be in tv mode or 3d, doesn't really matter, but give us the ability to go into the hollows and just F around. • @Zharque

Ironically enough, the fact that ZZZ is designed (albeit maybe unwillingly) to be a side game is what made it be my main game. Life's just too busy right now to be spending 30 minutes on dailies and spending hours on finding every single treasure chests on a map for like maybe 5 pulls total. Having played other hoyo games before also helped me pace ZZZ a lot more, I've only pulled 3 limited characters despite buying monthly pass and I have 100+ fuels saved up because I knew end game was gonna come eventually and there's no need to rush building and pulling characters.
I have give massive props to the dev team for how they handled TV Mode, they gave it a fair chance but when it couldn't live up to expectations, they decided to go all out on replacing it. As a mobile player myself, although I liked the idea but the actual gameplay was miserable because they've only added on-screen controls recently and it was extremely tedious to navigate on the phone. Now that fall guys is their replacement for it, I'm guessing that mode is also where they plan on expanding for casual players, which honestly I'm all in for since it's a fun mode.

I would argue it DOES have casual friendly exploration, just in smaller, tighter city areas. This aspect of ZZZ is one of the big reasons I stuck with it. I love exploring the neighborhoods, taking pictures, and doing weird side quests.¹
The Officer Mewmew and Daily Ridu tasks have you run around looking for stuff and talking to people. It can be pretty braindead, but it's also casual and mobile friendly. Same with the new Agent hang out system. There's rewards tied to EACH Agent. Being able to hang out with Agents also gives me another reason outside of combat to pull a character. I didn't NEED Lighter, but I sure as hell wanted to hang out with him in Lumina Square.²
Your original point still stands, as they don't take a lot of time to complete, and once they're done, they're done. They could also use a some work to be more engaging.³
What some players may be looking for is here, but a little undercooked. If they keep improving these aspects, ZZZ could be something incredible.
¹ We look for COINS for a GARBAGE CAN. I love this dumb game.
² I mainly pulled him for the eventual Ellen re-run. Turns out he's pretty good with my Billy and Lucy.
³ I have not completed the side-quests in Port Elpis; maybe they're better! Maybe they're worse!

I think the reason why TV mode et launch was such a hassle to most is that it felt like a « waste of Time » to them. I also definitely think the new Eous sections are a pretty good replacement for the TV mode, and the Pale Void even further assuaged my fears. It can't do everything TV mode could, but that's because it's a different medium, everything will have tradeoffs regardless. I will still miss it though, because that mix of casual old school dungeon crawling and high energy combat is what drew me to ZZZ in the first place. I don't enjoy the feeling of just being "all go all the time." So I hope they can add some more "casual" side missions using Eous and the Pale Void mechanics.

I definitely think that ZZZ would really benefit from a reduction of material farming requiring the “battery charge” system. I find it really limiting as I can easily burn through all my battery charge in less than 10 minutes and then be stuck progressing an agent for the day. My solution would be to incorporate a mode similar to the “Monster Hunter” series where you can go out to different large locales (or in this case parts of hollows like the pale wasteland event that we just got) and be able to hunt down high threat ethereals to fight for some varried but slightly randomized loot drops (ex. Hunting the Dead End Butcher would drop random amounts of dennies, ether chips, and ether plating) Basically allowing casual players who wish to progress a pretty slow yet viable option to engage in without having to go through the mess of hollow zero for vary limited/specific rewards.

As a player, I have to admit that my primary motivations are exploration, expression, traversal, and detail.
I like smelling the roses. This also means that, unfortunately, I landed in the wrong game with Zenless (but it was my first, so I had to start somewhere). The fact is, I love the world and I like the gameplay. But the gameplay is never asking anything of me, the player. I either show up with an optimized build and let it do its thing, or I show up with my favorite champions and struggle. The combat is endlessly flashy, but it ultimately feels like whether I can pass a rudimentary skill check with "the build everyone recommends"
I should be playing Genshin. I'm drawn to it, but more attached to the game that I started playing since Day 1. The fear of fomo is crippling there, and I feel like it can't be salvaged if I start now. In addition to that, I prefer an urban aesthetic to the fantasy one on a gut level, though I'm open to both.
On the other hand, it looks like either Ananta or NTE is going to give me everything that I want. So looking forward to those releases.
I'd rather ZZZ be the enduring property here with its proven world, music, narrative, but it's going to come down to what player motivations each of these entries seeks to address.

There's still some stuff to discover like the lost mini cargo boxes or seeing NPCs just out and about. But I believe you said it in a previous video or it was another ZZZ content creator who stated that ZZZ is great for players who of the Persona series of games. It really does have that persona feel without the rigid time constraints of a calendar outside of the time of day for side missions and events. But you have full control of the day/night cycle. So there is never any pressure if you missed something at a specific time of day.
I do agree the combat is a major pull for ZZZ. It's flashy, easy to get into, yet it has just enough behind the scenes for a casual player to want to build a character with little effort invested. Especially with the introduction of the special training program that was brought in with this recent patch. I've been using it and it certainly has made it easier for me in figuring out what I'm missing and by how much. Really helps optimize my battery usage which I feel like some people might appreciate.
As one of the few people who enjoyed the tv mode, I will admit that playing as Eous in the hollows has been an absolute blast and I fully agree that the game is better for it. I am happy they haven't removed it in it's entirety though. I can't exactly explain why I like the tv mode. I think it evokes classic dungeon crawler crpg vibes for me. Which kind of feels right up ZZZ's vibe.
I feel like Hoyo is cooking something for ZZZ. Especially after the way the story concluded in this patch. I'm sure they aren't gonna want to let this game flounder. I think they truly believe in the product and want to do right by the fandom. But at the end of the day it is a business. But I'm hopeful.

Personally, although people like not having an open world in ZZZ, the game just doesn't show the urban appeal that I love so much. I would recommend replacing the loading screen with say, using the car to get around the city, but you can only drop it off at the existing playable zones. Of course that'll be some hell of a work for the devs, but it would help with the immersion intensely. Also, the character interaction is so good, I want to see more of that, ESPECIALLY a selfie mode for the playable characters aside from the proxy. I don't have an idea on improving the game structure itself, but if I had to say something, then I'd like an easier way to do world quests and missions on the HDD.

The best thing that I love about ZZZ is that it respects my time. If I only do the dailies, it'll only take like 8-15mins tops. But even if there is weeklies or events to do, it'll only take 15-30mins which isn't every day.

I remember complaining on the Genshin subreddit about how broken my account is. Most of my characters are under-leveled even though I've dropped the world level (surprising how far you can go if you have enough food to heal). I went through a daily grind and managed to level up my main 5 or so but it takes so long. Everybody said Genshin is the easiest and I don't know what I'm talking about.
Now ZZZ has come out and has stolen my heart because I can give a few hours every day and feel satisfied. I can play a few "world" quests and actually make noticeable progress. Even with a not so optimized account, I can decide to play or grind, or both.
Every time i open Genshin i just remember the mountain of quests i haven't done and feel like changing server and starting from scratch just so that i dont feel the pressure.
Hoyo has found the best balance with ZZZ.

For someone that come and stick with GFL/PNC, ZZZ feels just right. As a weeb I tried quite a lot of anime gacha games.
A game that need me to login 20 mins max daily, have event/update from time to time that continue the story or give some side story/content for fun, and have you slowly grind in your own pace. I was just describing GFL/PNC but it can apply to ZZZ too. This game strike to give you a chill experience like how MC experience, while some really really challenging content to people that want the adrenaline rush from time to time. Although the weekly grind is little bit annoying, but glad they also try to make it fun by changing it up.

if the leaks are anything to go by the casual side is going to be the bangboo fall guys “collab” that its going to have. I think that is a brilliant choice as it is a tried and true game play for casuals and it’s not really hard to make since the crude geometric shape is actually a style choice rather than a limitation.

I think Arcade has more potential of attracting the casual audience by introducing more minigames to it and it already has the leaderboards and the fall guys like approach with the bangboos was also good, so if they just add multiplayer to it and make game modes around that can also work. The recent bangboo tower defence was also nice. with all these I'm very excited to see what devs do in the future.
(I need the arcade like bike race similar to the Sons of Calydon story, straight up add Mario cart in game)

What i like about ZZZ is that i dont need to log on more than an hour for my weekly/dailies. Story wise its good, goofy and comedic but can be serious.
The last thing i want from it is to have something todo that would reduce my rest time.
If were talking about improvements, i want the arcade to add more things. Its something neglible now. Maybe add some of the past events like the one with Miyabi where Eos walks around a map collecting coins. Its fun and very challenging since i lack the ability to control it perfectly. Or maybe make some side weeklies where WiseBelle would work outside and do side jobs.

I think you're statement at the end was perfect. ZZZ is a perfect "second gacha." I like that the story segments aren't too long every update, but still feel like an ongoing narrative. I like that I spend ~10 minutes at most doing dailies. The side events are still long and have a lot of dialogue, but I skip the unvoiced stuff as it doesn't seem to expand upon characterization. HSR is in a middle ground between Genshin and ZZZ, and I enjoy the areas in that game as well. I'm sick of open worlds in games in general, so I'm glad Hoyo has been making more intentionally designed spaces.

0:48 Thank you. This is EXACTLY how I felt about TV mode. The issue was always going to be that any of the interesting TV gameplay would really need to be tricky puzzles. Hoyo, ofc, can't do this because they want their game to appeal to as many people as possible. So what you ended up with was an easy and boring game mode.
Personally I didn't hate the concept of TV's, but telling story through them, and padding gameplay with them, really was the part I didn't l ike.

In a dev talk, they talked about expanding the city areas sounding like making it a bit more open world like, were there would be more interactions between you, your agents and NPCs. But that wont come any time soon. They seem to add both type of content at the same time, it's just that the casual content have no repeatable content like the late game has. It would be pretty hard to get casual content repeatable while not becoming too boring, managing the store and such tasks could become too repetitive after a while.
I would love more story driven content, maybe just create small stories every other week, doesn't have to be voiced or animated, this game is pretty good at telling a story with just text.

I can definitely agree with you there. Back during the wait for 1.4 I completed basically everything in the game as of 1.3, basically had nothing to do other than a few arcade achievements and filling out the last few entires of Ray’s Research Log. So, I started a second account :P But I’m basically back in the same boat now this far into 1.4
I feel pretty much the same as you on the whole TV mode issue. I was a supporter, and was sad to see it go… but what we’ve gotten in its place has absolutely been an improvement. The devs are cooking, that’s for sure. My biggest surprise, and a reason why I felt like there isn’t a ton to do, is that there were barely any side commissions this time around. There were 2 I think? Don’t get me wrong, there’ve been a ton of fun events, plus Deadly Assault and Lost Void are super fun, but the core commission system is kinda just gone with TV mode I guess. I felt like that was a big part of “rebuilding our reputation as a Proxy”, so where go?
Overall I’m very happy with ZZZ, it’s my first Gacha and I’ve been having a blast. It really feels like the devs are in tune with the fanbase here, which is very nice, I adore the characters, the combat has been awesome. So I really do hope the game keeps doing well, cause I’m having fun with it, and with these videos :D

The lack of side commissions is exactly what I've been worried about from the moment they decided to leave tv mode behind.
As much as it was a neat way to tell a story, it also must have been a huge time saver when it comes to developing missions. No need to make a bunch of 3d environments or animate NPCs when you can just use the pre-existing tv screens to build out a whole level basically using blocks.
Even if the new content we got to replace it is fun, I'm worried we'll just be getting a whole lot less content overall going forward, at least in terms of playable levels

I still think that the course correcting sanded off a lot of the edges, and while that might've made for a better game in the end, it is a much less unique and interesting one. I'm not going to pretend like the TV mode wasn't implemented horribly, but it was that presentation that initially drew me in, as it felt quite different from everything else. I don't think I would've ever picked the game up in its current form, and would've missed out on what I still think is by far mihoyo's best output to date.
I just hope the Devs find their unique direction again, instead of making the game even more bland through trying to satisfy everyone. Be it the TV mode, the combat system rework, allowing you to switch to agents in the overworld or effectively removing the time management aspect from the game, they're all mostly changes towards a more approachable and stress free experience, but they also feel like the original building blocks of the game's identity that seems somewhat lost to me at the moment.

Making an open world game poses another problem: you have to make it full, alive and interesting. This is something that can lower overall quality of an otherwise good game. I'm sure I'm not the only one to ends up just spamming fast travel to get things done in an open world game so I'm glad ZZZ doesn't have this one extra thing that might become a single point of failure

ZZZ is "open" enough to have fun interactions with NPC. Still it's missing the freedom of expresion that Genshin has. Climbing, flying, swiming, attacking.

A open world like nier automata would be cool, small maps with things to do and enemies to kill.
Something like a city map full of side activities and a hollow free roam with random events. Being able to earn some form of currency or materials from an activity that you can do regardless of energy would be nice, something like the miscelaneous quests from skyrim, where they give small rewards and are more like an excuse to keep playing.

ZZZ is my first Gatcha and I started on it on the 2nd January after being bombarded with Burnice music recommendations.
It's been fun so far, just hit Inter-Knot Lv28 and managed to get Miyabi in 30 pulls. Sitting with a Section 6 team with Miyabi, M3 Soukaku and Harumasa as my primary squad.
The only thing that has been annoying for me is that outside of getting Ben (Just got him today), I don't have any Fire characters at all, I've got pretty much all Ice and Electric characters which as you can imagine can fall short on missions with hard enemies with resistances. Not being able to get Burnice for who knows how long makes me real sad too.
The game probably needs to at least allow you to have a balanced team that can cover any mission while being either F2P or minimal investment. (I'm what you call a goldfish lol)

i definitely stuck with zzz because they adjusted the TV mode, but also because i already liked the combat and it makes for a really nice 2nd or 3rd gacha game for me. I know that there's the arcade and a few other bits like the "dating" that isn't combat centric that some casuals do like, but i also definitely agree that more casual/nongamer focused things should be added to draw in more

Well, to be fair ZZZ was the top performing title for Hoyoverse in the month of December. 2nd overall gacha revenue after Love and Deep Space. So it seems 1.4 fixed some of the "floundering" issues you were talking about. Granted this might be a one off because of Miyabi. It's still great that they revamped the new player experience, and they do seem to really care and listen to feedback. I have high hopes for the future of ZZZ. Right now it feels like the most experimental major title and it's been mostly W's so far.

  • @Misha-f8s

The TV mode was there as a cost-cutting measure, allowing mihoyo to create levels cheaply, without much in the way of 3D art, level design, etc, so that the budget the game had allocated to it can be spent on the things that matter - combat gameplay and characters. Even the story presentation is done cheaper than HSR for example, as they cut the corners of having the characters standing in a 3D space for a lot of the dialogue scenes. The changes mean ZZZ has had more budget allocated to it, which is thanks to its success. I assume the game exceeded hoyo's expectations for a fully original IP that's also quite different tonally from what they've done already.
So it's not that the game was struggling and it had to get fixed - the game simply had more money put towards it, so now they can make the Eous sections full levels with 3D puzzles, and proper interactions.
