Great video! I have milkweed near a butterfly bush! Perfect combo for a butterfly garden! Was able to watch the butterflies come in, lay it’s eggs on the underside of milkweed leaves, (bees love the flowers also!!) watch the eggs hatch and caterpillars feed on the leaves for nutrients, then turn into butterflies nearby before the head off to Mexico. Such an interesting process! (The seeds inside the (kind of ugly pod) is quite beautiful! I save them as well! Thx for promoting the monarchs!🦋

I did the same thing: combine my hot color plants into one bed and it turns out I kind of love it. Who knew? Beautiful garden, love the idea of extending that bed a bit.

Thank you for helping the monarchs! I have a couple "wild" areas of my property where I let common milkweed grow as it pleases. We had 25 monarchs make it to butterfly stage last year... would have been 32, but a mouse ate 7 of the chrysalis's. =( Poor monarchs have so much against them. It's truly a miracle any of them make it to butterfly stage, let alone Mexico. They have a LOT of predators along with what us humans have done to them. Here's some trivia I learned recently: there's only 8 cells that remain the same from the time a monarch catapillar egg turns into a butterfly... truly a metamorphosis!
I, too, love cool colors in the garden, but this bed you've shown us is so pretty! Love your bloopers too!

Perfect timing. I am hunting for a milkweed that is not aggressive and the Tuberosa sounds like a good one. I planted Dill and Parsley as host plants for the Swallowtail and I have had quite a few Swallowtail caterpillars feasting. I hope they pupate in my island bed.
Loved seeing that butterfly on the milkweed before you even plant it.
Michael's garden looks very nice. I especially like the Amsonia. Great job on the no-dig bed!!

I'm in LOVE with Asclepias this year, after planting a tiny one 3 years ago, given to me by my neighbor. At that time I didn't want to introduce orange into my gardens because, like you, soft cool colors appeal to me more. But after seeing 5 Monarch caterpillars that first year, I was interested. This year I added several in 1-gallon sizes and the swath of that gorgeous clear orange is lovely. There are even 2 baby seedlings from the original plant, which I will nurture. Thanks for featuring this plant, and I hope you will show us your swamp milkweed in bloom soon.

Hi Yulia. Such an invigorating and vibrant warm color garden. Love the dahlias! Ive read that nasturtiums do not like rich soil and yours looks pretty rich. That may be why they appear the way they do. I could be wrong.

Dont forget that all milkweed are the host plant for monarch catapillars, so they will chew the leaves. Dont spray with pesticides. Milkweed seems to attract aphids just spray them off with water. Yuliya thank you for another beautiful video. I prefer the cool colors too but I have warms mixed in and somehow it works.

I've heard another garden channel talk about using "all natural" BT on her calibrachoa, close to her pollinator garden. Sadly, that product will kill ALL caterpillars. I'm okay with some leaf damage or just not using some plants rather than using ANY pesticides. I hate how few. Butterflies I'm seeing, I remember drifts of them. Asclepias was one of my first additions at our new home even though there's some along the dirt road. I look forward to years of pollinator blooms. I've found the honey bees love the narrow leaf plantain flowers so I'll tolerate those growing in my ditch. Gardening isn't just for human enjoyment, IMHO.
Edit: I enjoy my Franz Shubert phlox close to my asclepias as well.

I concur - any bug problem is just sprayed off with water or picked off. I had a bud worm problem at one time and when I was considering BT I read the dangers of it too but surprisingly they are easy to get rid of organically along with the help of several spiders that ate them!

Love seeing the warm color garden. I have this funny problem of being conflicted. I have a new bed this year that’s filled with clashing colors. I lean towards purple and blue, but wanted a native vine, so planted 9 native coral honeysuckles along the fence, ha! We’ll see how it evolves. Thinking maybe a color scheme of dark purple, white and coral... But I always change my mind.
Thanks for introducing me to Amsonia. It’s now one of my favorites!

Another wonderful video. You never disappoint and you spotlight plants that give me a reason to consider them for my own garden. Like you, I love the pastels but these butterfly weeds (also native to KY) are not so garishly orange that they couldn’t fit in next to some blues and purples for contrast. Thank you for widening my gardening horizons. (Absolutely love the outtakes)!

I also grew the black velvet nasturtium, I think after seeing you sow it and was bummed at how bright red it is. I will be moving it to my veggie beds. I guess I should give my husband a hug since he loves purple shades which go with pretty much everything! I try to add asclepias to every bed, I have noticed that common butterflies love fennel too which grows like crazy for me.

Ever since I painted my front door yellow I've been incorporating yellow plants in my garden of mostly blue/purple color scheme. I grow nasturtium often and have success. If you want more compact fuller upright nasturtium. I would recommend planting them sooner so they have a chance of developing more leaves before the sun comes. If they’re planting later in the season. They’ll bloom sooner but won’t have the foliage to balance and holdup the stems of the flowers

Awww, great video! And I did learn so much, Yuliya. I'm right now trying to figure out if I can grow Asclepias turberosa from seed. Or, rather, I know I can, but if I should direct sow in the fall, or start them indoors over the winter. Have you ever grown them from seed?
Update: I'm seeing that they probably won't bloom their first year, hmm.....Frustrating growing perennials from seed, isn't it. This past winter was my first time growing from seed indoors with grow lights. I managed not to kill any of them thru damping off, which was a triumph. But then with that super cold spring we had (I'm in southern CT, so similar climate to you), my little baby seedlings barely barely made it. AND the perennials -- Verbascum, lupine, flax, hardy geranium -- they have really struggled, and none are anywhere near blooming except a few Verbsacum in a very small way -- short little stalks. But I learned that that's often the case first year w/perennials. OK, getting off topic: I'm not sure if I can go thru all that with the milkweed. But then, spending $13 or $15 dollars on each plant, well that's why I finally wanted to learn to grow from seed in the first place! So, I guess no real question, just a bit of a rant. Oops and thank you.

I love the milkweed. I bought a bunch of seeds and winter sowing them now. Ive heard they attract aphids. Is this true?

Some yes, but it can be your trap crop. If They are on milkweed they don’t bother anything else

Can you tell me why you don’t break up the roots out of the plant cells? I always have so I’m just curious🤣

How many plants of each to create the look such as in this video, or actually any flower bed?
