    Very insightful video, broken down into easy to understand steps. In my state, agriculture is major industry and have a farms out reach service with lab testing kits. Their is still a fee, but, it's very minimal. Perhaps the most important measurement of a soil test is that of the pH. A Amish farmer once advised me on how to test the soil:
    Mix one-half cup vinegar with a scoop of soil. If it fizzes or bubbles, your soil is alkaline.
    Mix one-half cup water with a scoop of soil, then add baking soda.
    If it fizzes or bubbles, your soil is acidic.
    If neither reaction occurs, your soil is balanced, or neutral.
    It very important to have your soil professionally lab tested at least upon initial set up and every 2-3 three years.
    Just caught your edible broccoli leafs video, spot on and thank you. Another application is beef & broccoli leaf stir fry. The larger leaves are fibrous and I use them as you would cabbage leaves for stuffed cabbage rolls and they stand up to long duration cooking. Also, can you put up a video on how to put you garden in to winter sleep, overwintering the Perennials. Or protecting the early spring crops like garlic. Thumbs up, your very easily understood in communicating. Your "green thumb" passion is very recognizable. Thank you for the free downloadable planner....you rock!

      You're so kind Warren! I've been thinking about using the leaves like that for stuffed cabbage, too. Maybe dolmada, the Greek stuffed grape leaves?? I would think the flavor wouldn't be too different. I do actually have a winterization video if you want to check that out. One of the longest gardening days I ever had, since I was characteristically late with my prep and had to do the entire winterization in one day before the snow came that evening. What a day! ua-cam.com/video/JUH9NTjdxng/v-deo.html

    Great video. We have several raised beds and raised self watering container beds. We use woodchips on cardboard on our pathways in between beds. We also have had success covering our beds in the late fall with cardboard and mulch to over winter. Our beds stay weed free for spring planting. We're using metal edging around our blackberries and raspberries this season as well. Thanks again for the great content.

    My soil is like beach sand and it’s so frustrating! I think I’m going to get that ph reader and have a better plan for next season; I already planted for the year, so it’s probably too late to do anything about it. This video is so helpful though, thank you!!

      Just keeping adding compost! That really is the best solution to a lot of issues - fertility, drainage, compaction. You got this! (P.S. I should have gotten that pH reader years ago. It’s such a fun gadget!)

    I guess this is the sign I needed to finally start testing my soil... 😅
    I bought an Edge Right competitor's steel edging in 15" height (to use in an in-ground raised bed situation), but my soil is SAND so it was nearly impossible to hammer in!! Maybe I need the 10 lb. sledge. 😂

    • @ReSprout
      @ReSprout  Рік тому

      Omg the sledgehammer HELPED SO MUCH! Also did the other edging have teeth? I think those wicked teeth really helped get it in there too. They were SHARP!

    I also recommend Down To Earth products. Their fertilizer blends are great and very "Whole". The 3-3-3 Starter Mix is great to mix into Seedling Mix soil for seed starting and young seedlings. The All Purpose 4-6-2 blend is my favorite for containers, mixing into beds each Spring and Early to Mid-season top-dress fertilizing. Then for certain vegetables I will switch to DTE's Bio-Fish 7-7-2 blend around Mid-Late season and top dress with that for heavier Root/Fruit production. I've seen really great results from Onions, Garlic and Potatos using that method! (Don't forget the Bone Meal).
    Their single ingredient products are also great quality and reasonably priced. Greensand, Azomite, Rock Phosphate, Blood Meal and Kelp Meal are some of my most used of those. They're great when you can find them in the 1 LB boxes too, if you just need a little of something. I use their single ingredients when blending Soil for Soil Blocks in Spring.
    Also a bonus that they're a local, Oregon based, company.

      Yes, I love Down To Earth! I use their starter blend for my soil blocks, too! I love that they're organic and their packaging is so responsible. Whenever I need amendments, I check them first. Glad to hear I'm not the only one!

    New sub. Found this channel when looking if i can eat broccoli leaves. I harvested my first potatoes ever and zucchini did well. I’m needing a watering system for when im traveling

      @ReSprout  10 місяців тому

      OMG I feel you! I travel a lot and the watering has been a real struggle while I'm gone. Even with my automated system, I got a text one time from a neighbor telling me I had a fountain shooting up in my yard when I was hundreds of miles away. SMH.

    April! Do you have a supplier on LI for compost delivery? I’m no-dig, so my bins don’t quite make enough for all my beds. In other news, I’m surprised you’re not no-dig! Would love to see a future video about why you made that choice 😍

    • @ReSprout
      @ReSprout  Рік тому +1

      Hi Victoria! I get my compost from SOS For Your Soil out east. I have no idea if they deliver, though. The footage you saw in the video was me going to pick it up. We have so little space on our property (our tiny driveway has two vehicles and a camper parked in it!) that I try to store my amendments in my truck until they're distributed. On the no-dig, I HAVE tried it but with mixed results. It really depends on the bed and the crop and the time of year.
